Limbaugh’s Proof That Torture Works: McCain Was ‘Broken By The North Vietnamese’

On his radio show yesterday, Rush Limbaugh responded to the Obama administration’s release of four of the OLC torture memos with a full-throated defense of of torture and its effectiveness for gathering useful intelligence. As evidence of the effectiveness of torture, Limbaugh noted that — in his speech to the Republican National Convention last summer — Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said the North Vietnamese “broke” him while he was a POW. Limbaugh suggested that in saying the North Vietnamese “broke” him, McCain was saying that torture worked:

LIMBAUGH: The idea that torture doesn’t work– that’s been put out from John McCain on down– You know, for the longest time McCain said torture doesn’t work then he admitted in his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention last summer that he was broken by North Vietnamese. So what are we to think here?

Watch it:

This is not the first time Limbaugh has claimed that McCain’s remarks about his experience with torture proves its effectiveness. But just like the last time, Limbaugh is wrong.

With regard to his speech to the RNC, McCain explained that after refusing an offer of early release, North Vietnamese soldiers “worked me over harder than they ever had before. For a long time. And they broke me.” While McCain did not go in to detail during his speech, he explained in his memoir Faith of my Fathers that the information he gave the Vietnamese after being “broken” was out of date, fabricated, or of little use to his captors:

Eventually, I gave them my ship’s name and squadron number, and confirmed that my target had been the power plant. Pressed for more useful information, I gave the names of the Green Bay Packers’ offensive line, and said they were members of my squadron. When asked to identify future targets, I simply recited the names of a number of North Vietnamese cities that had already been bombed.

Elsewhere in his memoir, McCain recalled providing false information to his captors on multiple occasions in order to “suspend the abuse.” Further, McCain explained in a 2005 Newsweek column that he believed torture would yield little actionable intelligence. “In my experience, abuse of prisoners often produces bad intelligence because under torture a person will say anything he thinks his captors want to hear — whether it is true or false — if he believes it will relieve his suffering,” McCain wrote.

McCain was right. As the Washington Post reported last month, the torture of Abu Zubaydah — who was once thought to be a high-level AQI operative — did not foil “a single significant plot” and provided the CIA with a number of “false leads.” “We spent millions of dollars chasing false alarms,” one former intelligence official told the Post. Further, “most of the useful information from Abu Zubaydah — chiefly names of al-Qaeda members and associates — was obtained before waterboarding was introduced.”

Update Media Matters notes that at another point during his program yesterday, Limbaugh began slapping himself to mock anyone who believed slapping detainees in U.S. custody qualified as mistreatment. "I just slapped myself. I'm torturing myself right now. That's torture according to these people," Limbaugh said.

So John McCain gave up valuable information to the enemy?

Thank God we didn’t elect him to the presidency!

(BTW, is Limbaugh stupid, or does he just assume his listeners are stupid? It’s gotta be one or the other. Or maybe both.)

Of course, when campaigning in Pittsburgh, McCain said that he had given up the names of the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line, but you get the picture…

  6. ralph the wonder locust says:

Look, Rush, you got two possibilities here, and one of them has got to be true:

either torture doesn’t work in obtaining useful information

    or

the Republican Party nominated a traitor for president in 2008.

    Take your pick.

  7. Marie says:

Ralph, McCain did confuse the stories about what he told his captives in VN – nonetheless, I wonder how he feels about Rush today after learning of this?

  8. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

Any chance that Senator McCain will call Mr. Limbaugh up on his program and correct the record?

  9. ralph the wonder locust says:

I eagerly await the appearance of b-cup to explain what Limbaugh actually meant. This should not be construed as b-cup defending Limbaugh. He will merely be setting the record straight.

So what are we to think here?

That’s a very good question, Mr. Limbaugh. Exactly what are we to think here? If the entire purpose of torture is just to “break” someone, then I guess torture can be said to work. But if the purpose of torturing is to get useful intelligence information, then there is no question that McCain proved that it doesn’t work.

So tell us, Mr. Limbaugh. Is the purpose of using torture just to break someone, or is the purpose to get useful intelligence? Your answer to that question will say a lot about you (and the people who think you are right.)

  11. Jackie says:

Limbaugh never served in the US Military because he’s a coward so it makes sence he wouldn’t understand torture or even being a man. Now Rush is a drugs/child attacker he doesn’t do well with anything else. When the terrorist decide to kidnap someone they might take Rush and show him exactly what it’s like to be tortured and add waterboarding too. Talk about limp balls!

  12. bonat says:

Rush should just keep smacking himself until he finds an answer. Wonder what his Limbots will say now?

Rush banks on his listeners’ stupidity, Ralph.

Were they not stupid, he might have to work for a living.

    Lucky, lucky Rush.

  16. Xisithrus says:

“I just slapped myself. I’m torturing myself right now. That’s torture according to these people,” Limbaugh said.

  17. Xisithrus says:

“I just slapped myself. I’m torturing myself right now. That’s torture according to these people,” Limbaugh said.

That just proves torture doesnt work because your still not telling the truth. Please have someone waterboard you.

  18. tom says:

Slapping himself on the radio, indeed! Just another manifestation of Limpballs’ foolish, childish tantrums. He has two groups that listen to his daily rant-fest — (1) true believers who hang on every word he says and (2) those who find amusement in his adolescent BS and delight in hearing him crash and burn on a daily basis. I suspect that latter group is pretty large and getting bigger now as he is reaching the point of spectacular implosion any day now.

  19. The Shadow says:

Rush you fat bastard, someone needs to torture you and lets see if you like it. It’s always retards like you that shot off the fat mouth and haven’t ever served a second in the military. We put out soldiers at risk every time you and the other stupid idiots try to justify torture. Think stupid, if we engage in a war against anyone, they will have the right to torture our soldiers if they get captured. You can’t complain about them being tortured and video tape surfacing of it, if you advocate torture as a way of making people talk. But Nazi’s like you, Sean Mannity, the republicans in congress like to play tough we other people’s blood. If you get off you fat azz and enlist them I might listen to you.

  20. Xisithrus says:

hp & slippery dope: I should’ve been more specific for you two stupids.

Look dumbasses, I’d like to see people like you and Rush have the experience since you don’t think being waterboarded is torture. I should’ve been more specific since you trolls are too ignorant for your own good. Got it fools?

  36. Old Goat says:

Hi slippery, just so you know, I don’t advocate waterboarding anyone… I am a nice, fun-loving liberal. Are you one of those not-so-nice, generalizing farknuts?

  37. Purple State says:

Limbaugh began slapping himself to mock anyone who believed slapping detainees in U.S. custody qualified as mistreatment. “I just slapped myself. I’m torturing myself right now. That’s torture according to these people,” Limbaugh said.

This is the basic principle behind Limbaugh Theory lOl: similarity in name alone is enough to disprove policies built on democratic debate and discussion.

Considering Limbaugh’s seriousness is already in question here, my response may be falling on deaf ears, but in order for “slapping” to be considered “torture”, there needs to be two forces here: the unmovable object and the unwavering hand. Unless Limbaugh is into S&M, I’m pretty sure his hand will waver and stop before pain is too intense. But picture someone not stopping this motion.

About a hundred people here just thought about wanting to do this to Limbaugh right now, I guarantee it.

The fact is that most people will dismiss or admit that all of these forms employed by the Bush administration to get information are “torture” without ever being on the receiving end of it. Most of us can only imagine the situational pain and the helplessness in which these tactics may put us.

Until we experience waterboarding, confinement, slapping, and the such practices used at Guantanimo, we can only use outside observation and our own dogmas to envision the end results. But to mock this situation in the ways that Rush, Bill O’Reilly (his “new venture” with Dennis Miller), Ann Coulter (“OK, you’ve been good, Mohammed, we’re only going to waterboard you today. Let’s get you out of those cold electrodes and onto a nice, warm waterboard, OK?”), and others have done means that they cannot, shall not, and will not ever envision themselves in the same position.

Experience produces experts. If Rush thinks he can be an authority on “slapping”, then I suggest someone else help by acting as the “unwavering hand” to his “immovable object”.

  38. Old Goat says:

Oh wait now… I generalized, so that makes ME bad now. Spank spank.

    In other words… NEXT.

“I just slapped myself. I’m torturing myself right now. That’s torture according to these people,” Limbaugh said.

    – - Geeze, the pro- “coercive interrogation” crowd. They claim the techniques used in the interrogations are not only not torture, but that they are barely mild annoyances, and that it’s ludicrous to be making a fuss about them. Some have even gone so far as to apply that characterization to waterboarding, calling it merely a “splash in the face” or a “dunk in the water”.

What bothers me about this viewpoint is that if these techniques are so harmless, then how do they even work?

  46. Nat says:

The prevalence of fear, paranoia and irrational hatred in today’s GOP represents the antemortem gasps of a doomed species struggling to survive in evaporating pools of their own toxic waste as they mercilessly slice and dice one another in futile attempts to become the biggest fish in an increasingly smaller and smaller pond.

  65. osage says:

BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

In order to gain the political control they’ve enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and fiscal conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. They made a strategic decision to manipulate and exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional and vulnerable voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.

Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the devil they empowered and the karmic reality that they don’t have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and “advocate” the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party.

The survival of today’s shrinking Republican Party has become so dependent on extremism that they have no significant power left WITH or WITHOUT the support of America’s increasingly pernicious lunatic fringe.

The idiom “caught between the devil and the deep blue sea” is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. They are suffering the consequences of their treachery.

Their irresponsible propping up of George W. Bush cost them their credibility, and their disgraceful and shameless licking of Rush Limbaugh’s storm trooper boots is costing them their viability.

He sits at his 2+ million dollar desk and criticizes anyone who disagrees with him. He is the epitome of the anti-patriot, anti-American. He hates Americans. In 1960s terms, he’s a slob.

  93. Ape-Man says:

Funny thing about human rights – we all have them, including the other side – even really bad guys and extremists like Rush Limbagh. That’s usually an inconvenient truth, but right now he’s indicting himself so i say kudos to human rights in America! The veterans will catch on to this guy and peg him for what he is.

  94. dbadass says:

On further reflection, I think they might be right. Tired old white men may be an endangered species afterall. I suppose now they wish they hadn’t tried to eviscerate that landmark legislation… Then again maybe nature should be allowed to take its course…

  95. P.D. says:

Ape-Man@97, I have never understood how the Republicans always had such a grip on the military. Even though it has been exposed how Republicans underfund the veterans for even basic care. Sigh!

  96. dasm says:

Oh, I forgot– and Limbaugh coerces stupid Fox/Limbaugh listeners to think he has any facts/understanding/patriotism whatsoever. He doesn’t. He lives for his $$$$ and his contract. He is a millionaire, happy with his huge amount of money, while he embarrasses & defames all his listeners. It’s all about money for Limbaugh. Hates his listeners, but if they continue to listen, he’ll continue to make them look like idiots. They makes him rich, which they will never be. He’s truly an anti-American leech.

  97. dasm says:

Has anyone ever asked him point blank how much he has in offshore accounts?

  98. dasm says:

Please, please, please– let me slap him. Oh, please. Yes, please– let me slap him. Over & over & over.

  99. The Republic of Hymenoptera Stupidity says:

While we’re discussing the Fat Man’s utterly inane babblings, let’s not forget that the drug-addled human colostomy bag was actually DEFENDING the Somali pirates earlier in the week…

President Obama Ordered the Killing of Three Black Muslim Kids

    BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: You know what we have learned about the Somali pirates, the merchant marine organizers that were wiped out at the order of Barack Obama, you know what we learned about them? They were teenagers.

The Somali pirates, the merchant marine organizers who took a US merchant captain hostage for five days were inexperienced youths, the defense secretary, Roberts Gates, said yesterday, adding that the hijackers were between 17 and 19 years old. Now, just imagine the hue and cry had a Republican president ordered the shooting of black teenagers on the high seas.

Greetings and welcome back, Rush Limbaugh, the Excellence in Broadcasting Network and the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies.

    http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_041409/content/01125110.guest.html
    ______________

Of course, earlier in the week, Rush had something different to say about the situation…

    (again, Rush’s OWN words…)

According to Rush: “The whole reason that there is a resurgence of piracy, which is something that was thought to have been stamped out a couple hundred years ago, is precisely because idiots like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama think pirates and terrorists — and this is terrorism — are criminals, not enemies.”

The administration and “the left” don’t get it, according to Rush. They “fervently believe[]” America has enemies by virtue of its own existence, and because it steals from the poor nations of the world. Rush’s conclusion from this? The left believes “these pirates, in a way, I mean, it’s brothers in arms. You don’t understand. They’re mad. They have a poor country. We don’t. We gotta understand them.”

  100. kasinca says:

This uneducated, drug addled, over weight, gas bag is a disgrace to the human race. The republican party should be identified with this sorry individual and both he and the party should be shamed out of existence. How anybody can listen to this hateful non-sense I do not understand.

  101. dasm says:

Sorry about the 4 in a row– Limbaugh makes me hate patriotism– he’s bigoted, hateful, stupid, anti-American, anti-patriotism, liar. And revoltingly fat & ugly. (My opinion – he’s the political Ernest Angly!!)) What a horrifying creep, liar, dishonest blowhard, stupid buffoon, etc.) LImbaugh is a blight on the U.S. A liar, a smearer, a buffoon, a con-artist. Ignore this absolute idiot. He never EVER worries about facts. He is totally a liar, entertainer, opinionist. He has NOTHING to do with facts & journalism. To finally summarize– he’s an anti-American cartoon.

  102. hellinabucket says:

Rush worries about Rush and his contract. That’s all. Whatever it will take to keep money rolling into the company that paid him his millions. He doesn’t care about this country, or facts, or the truth.

  103. hellinabucket says:

Rush worries about Rush and his contract. That’s all. Whatever it will take to keep money rolling into the company that paid him his millions. He doesn’t care about this country, or facts, or the truth.

  104. wolfsinger says:

First Rush mocked Michael J Fox for having Parkinson’s disease. His audience and his advertisers laughed while defending him and said “that’s really funny.”

Then he mocked our men and women in uniform who disagreed with him. Rush called them “phony soldiers.” His audience and his advertisers laughed while defending him and said, “that’s really funny.”

Now Rush defends torture and mocks those who’ve had to endure it. Civilized people say, “that really ISN’T funny – It’s SICK”

How long will it take and who will be the first of his audience and his advertisers to say, “No. That’s not sick – that’s really funny”??

Rush is no longer the issue here. It’s the people who defend and support him.

  105. tom says:

“I just slapped myself. I’m torturing myself right now.”

Of course, those who were watching him on the “ditto-cam” realize that he was actually spanking the monkey and choking the chicken.

I must say, though, that his diet is really working wonders for him. He’s lost so much weight that he has gone from morbidly obese to merely grotesquely fat. He’s still repulsive but at least there’s less of him to be offended by.

  106. Bozo The Neocootiebug says:

i think for the sake of conducting an honest investigation into this matter tub-o-lard should volunteer to be subjected to “enhanced interrogation techniques” until he signs a blank check.

  107. Libellula saturata Annie says:

Eh. I hope Fat Bastard chokes on his own blubber.

  108. Game of Life says:

    P.D. Says:

Newt is busy congragulating himself on how successful the ‘Tea-baggers’ were.

I would say there were more nuts than usual on tax day but it wasn’t no big thing. repugs must latch onto a blank day, when nothing is going on, then have 250k people attending around the country.

It’s like the repugs will latch onto any day that automatically brings out crowds. How stupid is that? HAHAHAHA

What’s next teabagging on the 4th of July? I can hear the teabaggers now: our 4th of July teabagging was a huge success.

What happen on tax day was just a bunch of racist acting kkkish insane kooks.

I haven’t seen one of these ahole teabaggers in person.

  109. Game of Life says:

If I’m not mistaken isn’t country music more progressive than the teabaggers?

  110. Mike71654 says:

Ok, we all know Rush is a total Idiot…The sad part is that he actually has a following. In other words, there are real Americans out there who actually condone and support torture of another human being.
What does this say about America? Aren’t we the ones that has always pushed for human rights? Are we now on the same level and Communist North Vietnam?
Hell, why not just start executing people that are committed of committing a crime..not matter what it is.
    I JUST DON’T Get it.

  111. Ape-Man says:

If it wasn’t for the fat Limba would be nothing.

  112. dbadass says:

Still no dittoheads here to advocate for this fellow? What gives? Are they afraid or have they just not been told what to think yet?

  113. Daddy-O says:

“What are we to think here?”

I think you’re the sickest man in show business, Rush Limbaugh.

It wouldn’t matter if torture did work. It wouldn’t matter if it worked or not. We should never torture, and it should remain illegal.

    That’s America.

  114. Xisithrus says:

They “fervently believe[]” America has enemies by virtue of its own existence -Rush Limbaugh

I recall that the ‘terrorist hate us because we are free’ a talking point of the RWN they fervently believed. Because of the virtue of our own existence, right Rush?

    Heal thyself hypocrite

  115. Xisithrus says:

What Limbaugh is spinning away, I think, is the big lies of the Bush/Cheney white house ‘We dont torture’

The truth is, and this I think is an important point – They Flat Out Bald Faced Lied to ALL of the American people.

  116. katydid says:

dbadass – would imagine the troolls are getting the ‘iran prisoner’ talking points lined up…

last saw one at that thread with an idea for a parking lot…
    much earlier today…

    what’s for dinner?

i was hungry for some leeks and can’t decide what to do with them…

  117. tokin librul says:

Let the record show: McCain was pretty much coddled. His injuries moslty were sustained either when the jet crashed into the lake, or when the North Vietnamese militia members pulled him out of the wreck. They treated his injuries without benefit of anesthesia likely because they were using what little of it they had to help the people McCain had been trying to kill.

  118. livelongandprosper says:

And we have our first slope!

  119. pete says:

I am coming to the conclusion that the Reichwhiners are becoming more erratic because they recognize their utter failure. People who are confident about their position simply don’t say this kind of crap. It’s like a last desperate statement of a condemned man in front of a firing squad.

  120. Mathazar says:

How can any sane person defend torture ? I just can’t believe that our “çivilized” society is still clinging to such a barbaric act.

Practically every right winger is echoing dimbulb.

Strange how there’s laws against mistreating children and animals, but an adult human may be subjected to excruciating pain, as long as it’s in the name of Uncle Sam.

  121. youtube says:

did mc cain give any information ?
    that’s what it sounds like

  122. rightwing-leftwing says:

Duuu! Torture works? Will someone please take that guys microphone away! The only thing this proves is that McCain is a weak a$$ and will crack under pressure! We don’t need a weak a$$ neocon running this country. If McCain was a patriot, he would have died before releasing info – bottom line!

  123. hanshiro the antlion says:

    (Andrew Sullivan, via Hume’s Ghost)

“You would like to place Zubaydah in a cramped confinement box with an insect. You have informed us that he appears to have a fear of insects. In particular, you would like to tell Zubaydah that you intend to place a stinging insect into the box with him,” - Jay Bybee, judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

“‘The worst thing in the world,’ said O’Brien, ‘varies from individual to individual. It may be burial alive, or death by fire, or by drowning, or by impalement, or fifty other deaths. There are cases where it is some quite trivial thing, not even fatal’” - George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty Four.

  124. pete says:

Odd that a troll would invoke the record. That pesky record strongly suggests that neither Lush nor Flippy McSpin are particularly honest or stable.

hey, if torture is no worse than a fat man slapping himself, then tokin has a pretty good argument.

  131. ralph the wonder locust says:

hanshiro, when I heard about the insects, that passage from Orwell was the first thing that i recalled, too.

    “Strike Force” indeed.

As in “Three strikes and you’re out.”

  133. Mr. Evil says:

Late getting here. This is just sad. WTF kind of people are these? Rush has hit a new low in being pathetic. I’m at a loss. What kind of world do we really want to live in? How long are we going to let ourselves to continue to be manipulated by the MSM, FOX News, whatever newspapers are still left and the MINORITY Right?! Rush is proof positive that the people adhering to these outlets are either weak minded or just simply sadistic. Rush slapping himself as if that’s an equivalent to torture. What a joke! He’s nothing short of a sadistic deviant that should have been arrested long ago. But in corporate America, those with the money build the jails, they don’t reside in them.

Strike Force my a$$. These right wing cowards are all proud of their guns in bumfu(kistan where nobody is shooting back at them. But like Rush they didn’t serve in the military and most of them are afraid to go to a big city where they might run into somebody else with a gun.

  136. blackwidow says:

Sure torture works, but that does not mean that the people being tortured are actually telling the truth.
People used to admit to being witches and having sex with Satan under torture too, I don’t think any sane person thinks they were being truthful.

None of that matters though, because the United States should not torture.

  137. Ape-Man says:

What do you bet Limba leaves town like he promiced now that he’s endorsed torture and treason. I’m betting that was just another lie.

  138. Game of Life says:

repugs are idiots because being stupids is easier for them.

Did y’all catch this on Keith’s show?

HAHAHAHA repugs are done, we are moving forward without them.

  139. labman57 says:

Let’s see. Torture works, but the CIA doesn’t torture. But if they did, it would work and save lives.

Furthermore, the GOP insists that the CIA interrogation documents are no big deal and are much to do about nothing, yet out of the other side of their mouths they claim that disclosure about interrogation techniques involving “torture” will jeopardize national security.

How can these documents be both trivial and inconsequential and a threat to the nation at the same time? You cannot have it both ways.

  140. hanshiro the antlion says:

    Only slightly OT:

College Humor made a hillarious (NSFW) music video about the deterioration of comment threads, to the tune of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start The Fire.” As a wise man once said, “It’s funny cause it’s true. “We Didn’t Start The Flame War”

    (via boingboing)

    It really is pretty clever…

  141. sscncturn64 says:

When our military has suspected terrorists in custody they should give them a choice. Let them know they can tell us what they know or their going to be locked up in a room with Rush limpdick on the radio 24/7.

  142. Game of Life says:

    btw

Eugene Robinson stated that the repugs may have something to run with. I can’t believe any normal person would make up shit to help the repugs.

Granted it was a stupid idea (I can’t remember what it was — tp-ers…help) from him but still, it’s upsetting when a usually normal person thinks the repugs need help creating their brand of bs.

They don’t need help making up bs talking points or stealing.

  143. kasinca says:

  144. Game of Life says:

Thanks game of life for putting that link up. I did see it on Keith`s show, but i get a kick out of how these wingnuts are so ignorant. They cheer when asked if they make less than $250,000 a year, then when their told that they get a cut in taxes, silence. I can see them looking at one another and asking. where getting a break in income taxes. wow, no sht,c`mon we still have time to make it to the gun show.

  149. rtconner says:

he’s a history revisionist. what else is there to say?

  150. OutstandingInAPlagueOfLocusts says:

Well, I’m late to this party. I’m no big McCain fan, but I definitely believe he would last a whole lot longer under torture than Limbaugh.I’m pretty sure we could get Limbaugh to confess to whatever, simply by threatening him with public transportation and economy class airline travel. The part that amazes me is that anyone is debating whether or not torture produces actionable intelligence. It doesn’t matter, I want to come from a country that just doesn’t do that. I don’t care if it works or not, we don’t want to be torturers.

  151. sscncturn64 says:

Does anyone know if theres a biography written about limdpick,he seems to know about everything. Im assuming his life experiences about war, torture, economics, and everything else hes right about come from experience. I would like to read it. Not a auto bio. though.

  152. Timus says:

Lenny Bruce is helpful so often. He did a bit about a very patriotic POW proclaiming his stalwart stance against cooperating with the enemy … until he sees them preparing the enema. What’re they heating that lead up for?

The POW gives secrets and more secrets and offers ever more. Lenny Bruce says, “If you can take the hot lead enema, then you can toss the first stone.”

Limbo nor nobody writing or reading here has ever had the opportunity to show the resolve we are so quick to judge others for missing. (The overweight pill freak, typical of Repugnants, scored a 4-F to dodge the draft.) McGoon certainly cooperated, and he’s been gently carried throughout the campaign by those afraid to confront him on the POW question. (The POW-MIA organization is particularly virulent in its criticism.)

But we’re skipping a beat here. The sin was in going into Vietnam in the first place, not how we all comported ourselves in the slaughter.

  153. Barb C. says:

torture for Limpdick? – full prescription pad with “no refills” box checked

  154. Ape-Man says:

Now that Limbaugh has indicted John McCain[R] he can go back to indicting himself again.

  155. laworder says:

You ask any cop with half a brain cell if during the interrogation of a suspect, whether torture works? He or she would reply, are you nuts? Number 1, anybody who knows anything about interrogation of suspects knows it doesn’t work; Number 2, if I tortured a suspect all evidence that I gathered would be thrown out of court; Number 3, I would be arrested and go to prison and also lose everything I own in a civil suit.

There is not one cop in America who would do it and get away with it. Only former President bush jr. & dick cheney could order it, get away with it, and defend it.

Limboo you’re time has come and gone, when you go to hell make sure to say “hello” to Joe McCarthy.

  156. gtsagan says:

So what are we to make of this? That Mr. Limbaugh is into self-abuse? In public? While on the air?

Well, we have one more reason to hurl …

  157. prius04 says:

There are not enough rich people to win the needed elections, just as there are not enough wackos to win the needed elections, and just as there are not enough christionists to win the needed elections. (I use the word christionist because so so many of them have no interest in the actual teachings of Christ. The profits are in christionism, not in Christianity.)

But figure out a way to get them all voting for the same guy and watch out. This is exactly how the right wing survived for the last 25 years. And Rush helped, even though Rush’s goal was ratings and increasing his contract size.

Sadly for the Republican party, Rush realizes he stands to make a lot MORE money as an outsider than he could ever make while a Republican party is in power. Hence, he has no motive to tone down his idiocy. The more idiotic, the more $ he stands to make. Good for Rush, but bad for the Republican party. And as long as this damages the ability of Republicans to win elections, good for America.

Empower common people and get the American 20th century. Vote progressive.

Empower the rich and get the American 19th century, and the last 8 years of the 21st. Vote Republican.

Torture is great at forcing the only detainees you bothered to actually apprehend to claim they are the masterminds you didn’t bother to go after, so you can say you caught the mastermind.

I am not sure what the North Vietnamese could do with the information they got from McCain, other than being able to follow a Pittsburgh Steelers game a little closer and appreciate what linemen add to the game.

The ex-military caller, that handed Limbaugh his increasingly enlarging butt to him, was exactly right.

  162. bonsai pajamas says:

Torture doesn’t work but, unfortunately for America, filling the mushy brains of his conscripts with misinformation and pretzel logic works just fine for Limbaugh. “Conscripts” because they really haven’t any choice other than to turn off the radio, there simply isn’t much else besides Rush Radio and Fox. O to return to the days when the air waves were considered a public trust and to monopolize them was not allowed. Thank jeebus for the internet.

  163. bonsai pajamas says:

Rodeskawler has made a very good point. I can see how it would be more convenient, rather than to have to go to the trouble of catching the real bad guys, to just make the “bad guys” be the guys you have at hand. That would free one up to say “Mission Accomplished” and then run off to pursue adventures in another, unrelated, theatre of war, now wouldn’t it? Yes. Good point!

  177. Khesanhkid says:

John McCain led the privileged life in the Navy even after crashing 5 aircraft. As far as his alleged torture, McCain, according to sources, made his captors aware of who he was on his fourth captivity day and made a deal. He was transferred to a Vietnamese Officers hospital, a Moscow surgeon was flown in and he was operated upon…all of which violates the Code of Conduct and the UCMJ. He admitted such in a US News and World Report, 5/14/73 and stated he was SLAPPED around for 3 or 4 days by his captors. Later he willingly collaborated with the North Vietnamese by accomplishing radio broadcasts and narrating films. Even his fellow prisoners doubt he was ever tortured and in fact, resented his collaboration. McCain’s greatest fear are fellow prisoner statements about his actions being released. McCain admit he accepted preferential treatment, disclosed military information and praticipated in propaganda activities all of which were forbidden by military law. He is no friend of Vietnam Veterans and has constantly voted against any Veterans bill (27 at last count). Rush is a fool and has been deceived by McCain and his alleged torture. He should have been courtmartialed, but this was prevented due to his father being an Admiral. Regardless, he is a poor example to give.
