An Iranian revolutionary court has sentenced journalist Roxana Saberi to 8 years in prison for spying. After a five-day secret trial held behind closed doors, Saberi — who has freelanced for NPR, BBC, PBS, and Fox News — had her press credentials revoked in 2006. When they first arrested Saberi — a former Miss North Dakota — Iranian authorities claimed that it was for buying a bottle of wine, “an act banned under the country’s Islamic law.” The Obama administration has called the charges baseless, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has released the following statement:
I am deeply disappointed by the reported sentencing of Roxana Saberi by the Iranian judiciary. We are working closely with the Swiss Protecting Presence to obtain details about the court’s decision, and to ensure her well being.
Ms. Saberi was born and raised in the United States, yet chose to travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran due to her desire to learn more about her cultural heritage. Our thoughts are with her parents and family during this difficult time.
We will continue to vigorously raise our concerns to the Iranian government.
I sure wish we were in a position to speak from the side of moral superiority but since we have secret trials, with secret evidence, and military judges who won’t get promoted if they don’t follow the prescribed script for guilt. Heck, we don’t even have trials sometimes and just keep our prisoners locked up for periods of over five years only to say ooops, we were wrong…you weren’t an enemy of the United States.
I pray for this young lady who I suspect has been arrested and convicted to gain leverage in negotiations.
April 18th, 2009 at 1:06 pmI’m sure Frank Gaffney and Sean Insanity will be all over Faux News declaring Obama a wimp and unfit to lead unless we nuke Iran RIGHT Now.
April 18th, 2009 at 1:06 pmOur hearts go out to you, Ms Saberi.
You have been so brave.
April 18th, 2009 at 1:07 pmThis is what eight years of Bush foreign policy does. No one trusted us until three months ago (and some still don’t). So people like Roxana Saberi, Laura Ling and Euna Lee are treated harshly by the governments of countries they were reporting on.
Let’s hope Obama’s diplomacy can get these Americans out of harm’s way as soon as possible.
April 18th, 2009 at 1:12 pmAre men allowed to buy wine in Iran?
April 18th, 2009 at 1:13 pmWhen they first arrested Saberi — a former Miss North Dakota — Iranian authorities claimed that it was for buying a bottle of wine, “an act banned under the country’s Islamic law.”
Did they also arrest the person who allegedly sold her the wine?
April 18th, 2009 at 1:17 pmThe International Federation of Journalists, in a statement from Brussels, Belgium, denounced Israel for what it said was “a vicious and brutal example of deliberate targeting of a journalist.”

I hope Obama and Clinton can bring this young woman home safely.
April 18th, 2009 at 1:19 pmZooey. This is a good question. Who was selling the wine?
April 18th, 2009 at 1:20 pmJane E. Schneider Says:
Are men allowed to buy wine in Iran?
Not legally, although Hooman Majd writes that Iranians have a long, long tradition of not monitoring what other Iranians do inside their own homes – which includes drinking and mixing men and women inappropriately dressed. It also includes a complete tolerance for men smoking opium, which I found astonishing.
April 18th, 2009 at 1:21 pmJane.
Probably stating the obvious, but the Iranian leadership wanted to shut down Ms. Saberi, so they started with the wine purchase, when that charge comes off as weak, they trump it up to spying.
It’s always possible that she was spying. I don’t believe it. There should at least be some information about the evidence they are accusing her of.
April 18th, 2009 at 1:26 pmI just hope they are working on getting the two Korean-American’s out of North Korea as well?
And she’s holding a Fox microphone, how ironic.
Will Fox news lobby on her behalf to free her, will they promote and protest Iran’s decision?
Will the ego-maniac O’Reilly take credit for pressing the Iranian government to lock her up?
Will ‘Crazy Boy’ Beck and ‘Sinister’ Hannity say it’s Obama’s fault that she was over there trying to learn her cultural heritage or was she spying for the Obama Administration when Bush was in office?
Will her Republican Congressperson work on any appeals if granted in the under Iran’s laws?
Will Robertson say that gay’s caused her to be locked up? Oh wait he just might say that.
Will Palin say it was good she got locked up because she made a choice to go there to get an abortion?
It’s going to be interesting to see the outcome of this situation?

April 18th, 2009 at 1:41 pmWe don’t have a leg to stand on to get her back. And so far there are no accusations that she’s been tortured so the Iranians act better than we do.

It is a good point. If she’s buying wine, somebody is selling it. Was it a sting operation? Or is it the equivalent of rounding up the john and ignoring the hooker? And, are other people prosecuted for buying wine? Or just troublesome journalists?
April 18th, 2009 at 1:59 pmGee Proud, let’s ask some of those ladies from the mormon compound in TX about that.
Idiot.
April 18th, 2009 at 2:00 pmYo, Proud – CHRISTIANS demean women.
Does that mean we ought to turn Regent University into a parking lot?
April 18th, 2009 at 2:01 pmProud. There’s intolerance in the Middle East, but you also admit there is similar intolerance that comes from the Christian right?
April 18th, 2009 at 2:02 pmProud, where did anyone blame this woman’s imprisonment on Ex-Resident Bush? C’mon, time to move along.
I recall in some Christian beliefs, women are to remain silent, and walk several steps behind the man, that sounds like a cult that demeans women and treats them as inferior to men. Are they to see their homes turned into parking lots as well?
Also, if you moved to Iran and shot your mouth off the way you do here, I doubt you would last either. It is a foreign country, their home turf, Sparky. They make the rules there.
Cripes, look beyond your face for two seconds. The world isn’t ours for the taking.
April 18th, 2009 at 2:04 pm…and when the Administration secures her safe return, Righties will pop off about how it’s “appeasement”.
quite the assemblage of contrary mary’s, those righties.
April 18th, 2009 at 2:06 pmThe truth is the Station she worked for and 2004. Yes the Plame leak by Dick Cheney caused a break down of information from Iran. The CIA got this young reporter who had been in Iran since 2003 and got her to spy for the US. Now notice she didn’t get picked up for spying but for buying alcohol which isn’t allowed by woman. The stress and pressure most of been great as she did something she knew as illegal. Now once Iran checked her documents and computer they found she had been spying for the US. Hillary saw the out side cries from the Lady’s parents but she only need to check the corrupt CIA. They used this girl because Plame’s cover was blown and this is the result. Now the US will have to trade for her release.
4 YoungSloshee is correct as the US has lied and committed crimes over the pass 8 years why would anyone trust a word we say. At lease Iran isn’t treating the lady like we did the innocent detainees in Gitmo.
April 18th, 2009 at 2:07 pmSo you’d have Israel bomb the whole country because you care about how they treat their women? Better to have them all blown up than demeaned? Iranians are no more hateful than the right wing in this country.

Who hates a religion? We are showing you instances of your generalization in our own back yard. Do you think that all Islamists are the same? Do you not think that they have a few extreme religious cults? Come on, buddy, fetch hither the “core tenant” or is that TENET?
The “core tenants” of Christianity come from the Old Testament… give it a read, lots of colorful behavior. Incest, sodomy, sacrifice…
April 18th, 2009 at 2:12 pmShe had her press credentials revoked and was illegally buying wine. Iran knows that Israel and the neocons have been itching to blow them up. In the same circumstances we’d have tortured this woman for years without a trial.
April 18th, 2009 at 2:14 pmGuess it would be silly to ask you how you can generalize from the actions of a few muslim fundamentalists to the entirety of that religion then, wouldn’t it?
Childish, illogical, magical thinking is not a virtue either.
April 18th, 2009 at 2:14 pmProud. Many on the Christian right oppose gay rights. And women’s reproductive rights. And Christians seem favor policies that are intolerant of other religious beliefs. (Prayer in school, ten commandments outside the courthouse, etc)

Mixed bag of nuts. I thought leftists were Islamofascists…? Did this lady Saberi spout leftist hate? Or did she spout some right wing nicety?
What does any of the former demonizations made by the right wing have to do with this womans imprisonment?

her five-day trial was WHEN?

April 18th, 2009 at 3:00 pmLots of white Christians terrorize women everyday in our country by either beating them, raping/sexually assaulting them, or killing them. These same people also hate gays & lesbians, while at the same time worshiping Dick Cheney who has his own oil cartel through Halliburton (which used to have an office in Iran). Yeah, yeah, and you know what? The Taliban in Afghanistan would love you people to join their little hate fest! In fact, last I knew…the republic party is now considered the American Taliban. Stupidity and bigotry often go hand in hand. Why do you post here? We already know what an ignorant punk you are what a brainwashed, braindead piece of garbage you are. You have no decency, no ability to make a cogent argument or write a single post that isnt inane to the point of assualting our IQs with absolute toxic levels of stupidity. I pity you and anyone who has to be subjected to your putrid presence. The worst part is that you KNOW you are stupid, that you are too dumb to even TRY to contribute which is why you are nothing but a hit and run troll. April 18th, 2009 at 3:22 pmProud Says:
One more reason for Israel to turn Iran into a parking lot.
Like many of the right wing’s more public faces do, you are making the very big mistake of thinking that the people of Iran are the same as the leaders of Iran. As is often the case in oppressive regimes, the people running the show are not a true reflection of the people they brutally rule. From everything I’ve heard, the people of Iran really do like us, especially the younger ones. And don’t forget that Iran offered to help us fight the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11, but George Bush spat in their face.
I don’t see how anyone on this site can be pro Islam.
I don’t think anyone is “pro Islam.”. What you will find is a respect for the right of people to practice whatever religion they wish, even if it is non-Christian.
It is a cult which demeans women and treats them as inferior to men. Let alone their treatment of Gays and Lexbians.
Well, the same argument can be made for some versions of Christianity.
As much as you want to blame this on Pres Bush that is just plain silly
Yes, it is. Who told you that ANYONE claimed Islam’s tenets were Bush’s fault? That is so completely a false premise, and only a person incapable of rational thought would think that anyone else would think that.
islam is what it is, a cult of hate.
Only in the sense that some versions of Christianity are cults of hate, just as you would find in any religion. There are always offshoots of any religion that practice hate as a motivation.
Be truthful, if any of you moved to Iran and tried to spew your leftist hate over there how long do you think you would last?
The question is meaningless because it is a false premise. You might as well ask, “If any of you were Prime Minister of Great Britain, would you impose higher import taxes on French-made goods?” Because none of us is Prime Minister of Great Britain, so we couldn’t possibly answer what we would do in that hypothetical situation. Just as none of us would both “move to Iran” and protest the government for a redress of grievances (to paraphrase your obnoxious comment), none of us could tell you what would happen if we did.

Slightly OT….
Islam Forbids the use of Alcohol and Pork.
Bernard Lewis, the famous Middle East Scholar, thinks this aspect of the Islamic Religion actually Halted the Advance of the conquering Muslim Armies in Northern Europe during the Middle Ages.
The Farmers of Northern Europe Needed to Preserve their Grain to get them thru the Winter. Beer provided the solution. And as any farmer Knows, a Pig is what you use to get you thru hard times and prevent starvation.
So the Muslim Armies probably got the Locals to convert To Islam, in the Balkans and other Colder areas of Europe, by holding the proverbial Sword Over their heads…but when the Power of Islam began to Fade…the Europeans Readily went back to their Beer and Brats.
Christianity was Saved.
Lewis also maintains that Islam lost its Scientific Edge, because the Holy Language of the Koran…Arabic…was forbidden to be Printed .Using a Gutenberg style printing press, the West Quickly won the Race for Modernity and Enlightenment..thru the printed word. Latin was joined by the many currently existing European Languages in books, to spread Knowlege.

Fox News and the White House recruited Journalist to spy as the CIA needed help. Roxana’s Father asked the Iran Supreme Leader for Clemecy as she got caugt. For nearly three months, Ms Saberi has been held in Evin prison, Tehran.
It soon became clear the bottle of wine was only a pretext. She was accused of operating as a journalist without a valid press pass.
Then, in a space of barely 10 days, she was charged with the much more serious offence of spying, tried and sentenced to eight years in prison.
It is a tough sentence, even on such a grave allegation.
The evidence has never been published, the trial was held in secret and her father claims she was tricked into making a false confession.
Suspicions raised
It all raises deep suspicions over whether this case has been hijacked by hardliners within the Iranian government, eager to sabotage any reconciliation with the United States.
Ever since President Obama started reaching out to the government of President Ahmadinejad, it has been clear that the government here is sceptical of his intentions, and confused about how to respond.
The Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, has suggested there is no difference between President Obama and his predecessor, George W Bush. Sometimes it seems as if the government here pines for the certainties of the Bush era.
[...]
Already through this case the Iranians have moved the agenda from the nuclear programme that the United States would like to focus on.
They have a bargaining chip to use in talks, perhaps to use as they press for the release of Iranians still held in Iraq.
Or perhaps the Iranians are preparing for a show of mercy, ready to dispatch Roxana Saberi back to the United States.
But for the moment this case is moving Iran and the United States back into conflict, before reconciliation even had a chance to begin.

This is all George Bush’s fault, of course.

You left off the snark that showed he was being sarcastic that was not only stupid but dishonest.

This unfortunate lady was taken in custody during the Bush regime. I wonder how much of this could have been avoided had the USA treated Iran like adults to begin with ?

Your case is DISMISSED, lack of substantial evidence. More than 80 posts two marginal examples.
April 18th, 2009 at 8:30 pmMaybe you liberals/progressives are too busy foaming at the mouth looking at what Michelle Obama is wearing…
Fox News has hired a legal team and a special contingency team overseas to have the reporter freed and moved to the US. Maybe thats something the MSM isn’t telling you. NONE of the other networks have remotely done anything like this.
Also, did you know that Fox News management and the News Corporation has been in talks with security personnel within Iran to have Saberi freed?
No, I bet you don’t…because you will do anything to blame Fox News, and thus hide the facts. The complete ridiculousness of this establishment that you call “ThinkProgress” is utterly baffling. How people can continue to engage in dialog is beyond me here. What have Amanda Terkel, Satyam Khanna, and Faiz Shakir done to you guys? You have all been brainwashed.
I hope to God that Saveri is freed! If allowed, I would go to Iran myself to get her back. She doesn’t deserve this, she hasn’t done anything wrong.
And these are the people you want Obama to talk to without conditions?
Where do you get your principles from?

Where do you get of sir? We get our principles from ourselves. We have blogs and speakers, which you obviously do not. We know how to use the internet, you do not. Face it, the liberal movement will take over your little conservative movement.
TP is here to bring radical progressive change to America. It’s time for the white man to step off the plate of power and let minorities take power. America was founded by minorities and it will be progressed by minorities!
One day, we will obliterate all you conservative hack jobs and nut sacks. You are the scum of the earth and need to be removed from earth.
LONG LIVE TP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Besides Michelle Obama is the best looking first lady since the late Jackie O.
I feel safer knowing Obama can talk to Iran, as none of your conservative “pee-brain” leaders could not without blowing something or someone up putting America at risk for terrorist attacks.
You should change your name to “yesOBAMAcan”

Hi, noBAMAatALL. That’s an interesting thing you said about what Fox News is doing. How did you find out? Do you have a link to the story about this, so we can read it for ourselves? That would be most appreciated. Thank you.
Oh, and for the record, I don’t give a flying fu(k what Michelle Obama is wearing, and neither does my wife.
And who is blaming Fox News for this? Please help me out by copying and pasting the time stamp from the comment in question. (It’s the best way to find a comment, unless you know how to make a link to it. That’s also cool. I gotta learn how to do that.)
April 19th, 2009 at 12:04 amAll of you who are posting GARBAGE, please STOP. And you garbage-posters know who you are. Stay on subject, and post something intelligent, thoughtful, and that you can be proud to say. In all honesty, this woman has NOT had a fair trial in Iran, as no proceedings behind closed doors, held in secret, can ever be deemed to be fair. If the U.S. held people at Gitmo without a trial, we can agree that it was also wrong, and that is why President Obama is closing Gitmo. This Gitmo argument does not give Iran license to imprison this journalist. Iran is one of the most oppressive, backwards nations in the world today. While the United States is not perfect, we are a nation of laws, and our citizens have rights, which is not the case in Iran, and certainly not for women in Iran. Every U.S. citizen should condemn the actions of Iran for its illegal treatment of this journalist, and for its long record of abuse of basic human rights. Iran is a deplorable, oppressive, shameful government, with no respect for human rights. Stand up and Speak out for freedom, for when one person can be unjustly condemned, all in the entire world are threatened. And one more thing – if you have the good fortune to live in the United States of America, while not a perfect society, you still live in a nation with a high freedom quotient. Appreciate those freedoms, and never take them for granted.

I certainly understand why you want to know where we get our principles since it is obvious you have none at all. That along with a complete dearth of functional braincells. You DO know that you are a moron dont you?
I certainly dont know what Michelle Obama is wearing. I also dont know why I should care in the least. I am sure a brainwashed moron like YOU cares because you were TOLD to. You are pathetic.
Next you lying punk I didnt see people here blaming Fox for anything except being a propaganda network which is purely obvious.
You dont know whether she was spying anymore than we do so spare me the outrage you insufferable moron. What would WE do to an Iranian spy? I know we sent a man who spied for ISREAL that is an ally to prison for life so get a grip and stop being such an ignorant brainwashed sheeple. You embarass our entire species with your stupidity

As for M. Obama’s outfits… she has good fashion sense, but I’ve not noticed anyone going on about that with the exception of the witless noBAMAatALL freak.
Next, I think you (noBAMAatALL) mentioned something about a “special contingency team overseas.” Seems like a rather fanciful way to describe it don’t you think? Moreover, if FOX News is taking some sort of responsibility for her well being why aren’t you showing a link that might further explain this? Indeed, the whole thing seems a little dodgy to me. Could this be made up? Hmmm? I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you read it on drudge somewhere. If so you might want to consider that only 40% of what you read on drudge is actually true. Regardless, until you offer some proof then my conclusion would be that the MSM isn’t going to cover it because the whole thing is fictional.
Finally, I noticed you seem to believe that we (the left, people on TP, the intelligent, etc) “will do anything to blame Fox News [sic], and thus hide the facts.” First off let’s just clear one thing up: FOX News is not the source for facts. If I want facts I watch the real news, not the fake news of FOX News.
Having read the comments I’ve not noticed where anyone has written that FOX News is to blame for this woman’s imprisonment. Indeed, to do so would further imply that an Iraian court had nothing to do with the matter, and therefore the very title of the article itself would be nonsensical. In fact, having to explain this makes it all the more confusing because I cannot for the life of me figure out the way your so-called mind seems to work. You don’t like people blaming FOX News for things, but you read a bunch of comments and somehow conclude that they were all made in order to blame FOX News for something. That seems like a witch hunt that even Tomás de Torquemada would find extreme.

…and the idiot above is the reason why the left will lose the next two elections and be removed from power again. Instead of trying to work with others…the liberals are only intent on silencing or removing the opposition in their quest to show their “open minded principles!” What a freaking joke that is. The left is more like “Goose Stepping Storm Troopers” then the right could ever think of.
You know it and to try and deny it is just a waste of your time.
Better you should admit it and plan on going back under the rocks you came out of.
Just saying.
April 19th, 2009 at 9:37 amI am like most people in that I think this conviction is probably less than legitimate, but on the other hand, in light of Obama condoning war crimes, committed over and over by the Bush regime, by refusing not to punish them, what leg do we have to stand on?
So far Obama has given a corrupt criminal Republican senator a get out of jail free card, while allowing many American citizens to be fraudulently prosecuted by the same Bush regime hacks(Seigleman to name one).
That is the other leg we don’t have to stand on.
Gotta keep those corporate masters happy you know.

April 19th, 2009 at 10:00 amYou’re going to win the next two elections? Hahahahahaha!!! So, if per chance you’re wrong – yes I know you guys never think you’re wrong =P – does that mean you could possibly be wrong about everything else you claim? *gasp!* Imagine! I can tell you that you’re wrong about wanting to silence you. Do you even read what we write? We want you to keep talking. The more you and people like you start babbling the less popular you become! Need we show you the numbers? I would think that simply looking at the total number of people who showed up to those silly tea parties compared to the total number of people who went to the polls to vote against that kind of nonsense would show you just how desperate your words look!
So, please do keep ranting, raving, and throwing tea parties. Such behavior has proven to be your downfall. Besides, if you right-wing nutters did in fact have things right in the first place, why did all your policies fail us?
April 19th, 2009 at 10:40 amRodeskawler
Yes, the United States has both legs to stand on. Get it straight. President Obama does NOT condone war crimes. You are not thinking clearly. Open your eyes to what is going on as a result of the mess George W. Bush left. The economy is in critical meltdown, healthcare costs are beyond affordability, our past surplus has turned into astronomical deficits, our education system lags behind the standards of foreign countries, our corporate CEOs are criminally lining their own pockets while the quality of American goods has become downright shoddy, Wall Street criminals manipulate the books and trade phantom shares everyday with impunity. The enormous problems in America today go on and on and on. We have not had any real leadership in this nation since John F. Kennedy was president – just a bunch of half-baked talkers who catered to the special interest groups. President Obama, however, is already changing the climate, and he knows that the last thing we need, in light of the dozens of critical issues already threatening our nation, is to start prosecuting past leaders. Get it straight. While it might satisfy your sense of revenge, it is just counter-productive. It would take enormous resources, money, time and energy, and for what? The damaging mistakes have already been made. The Bush-Cheyney era is over. Let our people learn from their poor past choices, and let the United States of America move on!
