Judge orders Bush to testify in SMU case.

ap080618011110.jpg Late last week, Texas district court judge Martin Hoffman ordered that President Bush be deposed in a lawsuit against Southern Methodist University (SMU). In the case, two condominium owners near SMU are claiming that “the university bullied owners into selling without disclosing plans to build a presidential library at the site.” They want the former president to “give a statement about whether SMU officials told him about plans to build on the site before the university bought the land.” The plaintiffs have already received statements from Dallas businessman Ray Hunt and former White House counsel Harriet Miers, but neither of them could remember full details of the conversations. Hoffman ruled that Bush can be deposed because he has “clearly relevant and material information about the central issues of the case.” Bush’s lawyers are now preparing an appeal “that would trigger an immediate stay.”

(ThinkProgress has been keeping a close eye on developments with the Bush library, and we will continue to do so. Read our related posts here.)

Judge orders Bush to testify in SMU case.

    – - Is Bush going to be literally holding hands with Cheeeney? Will he have to swear an oath? Will there be a transcript kept of what he said? At any rate, this is much ado about nothing.

And they expect Dufous to remember?

Poor George will have to spend the pittance he has raised to date on legal fees.

    lol

It would be HILARIOUS if Bush’s plans for his lie-berry were stopped due to illegal misconduct of SMU officials.

Why would Bush want to appeal this? If he has nothing to hide then he has nothing to worry about.

As for hp, the judge has decided the previous owners of the property do have rights. You remember rights don’t you?

  17. ralph the wonder locust says:

I see hp is now practicing comic irony.

He’s not very good at it, though. My advice would be to stick to the “quantity” idea.

Name one source for the Bush library.

    Who’s Funding Bush’s Library?

President Bush’s coy refusal to name the mystery donors helping to erect his $200 million presidential library is problematic, writes David Corn in Mother Jones’ MoJo blog. Though the law doesn’t require him to reveal names, his actions raise serious ethical questions. “What’s problematic is the prospect of a sitting president obtaining foreign cash for a pet project and not disclosing it,” argues Corn.

Corn suggests that Saudi Arabia’s royal family—which reportedly funded both George HW Bush’s and Bill Clinton’s libraries—is a likely contributor, and worries that it’s “an easy way for these foreigners to curry favor.” He also points out that while still in office, Bush could “hit up American corporations and individuals looking to score points with the White House.”

  24. Joe Sixpack says:

Hey, HP, here’s more: You mentioned that the Clinton library cost a whopping $165 million? Little Georgie’s library is projected to cost between $200 million to $500 million. But if Bush’s huge deficits are an example it will surely be closer to latter figure. It will will be the second-largest presidential library, behind only Ronald Reagan’s. And I bet it won’t even have a copy My Pet Goat, butthook.

Another non-story/hit piece enveloped with BDS!

An ex-President is being deposed in a lawsuit. That’s newsworthy. Nobody’s claiming Bush did anything wrong with siting his library. It’s just interesting that he’s being called to testify on it.

    .

    hp Says:

At least five times during a 90-minute grilling from the press, Clinton said, “I don’t recall” or “I don’t know” in response to nine questions about the cash-for-access scandal that has reached the First Lady’s office via her chief of staff, Maggie Williams.

Five times, ninety minutes, but only nine questions? So according to your stopwatch, he talked nonstop for almost ten minutes per question. Which means that him using those phrases would be in the context of his own explanation, as in “… and then we did X. I don’t know exactly when we started Y, but it led to Z…” Which means that your statement above is intentionally misleading. Which means that you know that you are wrong, and just don’t care.

  52. wiley says:

He has a lot of experience in these matters.

I have a stack of court documents from Arlington that portray the ‘’sordid and shocking tale” of the Rangers stadium, as one lawsuit puts it. Essentially, Mr. Bush and the owners’ group he led bullied and misled the city into raising taxes to build a $200 million stadium that in effect would be handed over to the Rangers. As part of the deal, the city would even confiscate land from private owners so that the Rangers owners could engage in real estate speculation.
