Despite His Contempt For Public Opinion, Cheney Praises Tea Parties As ‘Healthy’ And Hopes They’ll Have ‘Impact’

In the second part of their interview last night, Fox News’ Sean Hannity asked former Vice President Dick Cheney to give his “overall analysis” on where President Obama is “taking the country economically.” “Well, I’m very concerned about it,” replied Cheney before heaping praise onto the anti-Obama tea parties held last week.

“I thought the tea parties were great,” said Cheney. He then expressed his view that if would be a “healthy” development if the demonstration of conservative “grassroots” opinion had an “impact” on the debate in Congress:

CHENEY: I think when you get that kind of grassroots sentiment being expressed, thousands of people, hundreds of thousands of people all across the country, that will have an impact on Capitol Hill. It will have an impact, I think, on the political process. And it’s basically a healthy development.

Watch it:

Cheney’s praise for the tea parties is surprising considering his contempt for public opinion while in office. As Vice President, Cheney dismissed the the opinion of far more Americans when they disagreed with his administration’s policies:

CHENEY: On the security front, I think there’s a general consensus that we’ve made major progress, that the surge has worked. That’s been a major success.

RADDATZ: Two-third of Americans say it’s not worth fighting.

CHENEY: So?

RADDATZ So? You don’t care what the American people think?

CHENEY: No. I think you cannot be blown off course by the fluctuations in the public opinion polls.

On February 15, 2003, millions of people across the globe, including up to 375,000 in New York City alone, protested the impending invasion of Iraq. President Bush, who Cheney has praised for not making policy “based on public opinion polls,” dismissed the protesters as “a focus group.”

According to statistics expert Nate Silver, roughly 300,000 people across the country participated in the tea parties. Apparently this was enough to convince Cheney that maybe public opinion should “have an impact” on policy.

Just as the right will criticize Obama for anything and everything, they will say anything, spin everything, and make any observation as long as it supports their selfish notions. They have no moral point of view or any firmly held beliefs except doing what they can to maintain power or reduce the power of those they do not agree with. Of course they appear to have one more goal, and that goal is new for them, keeping their stinking asses out of prision.

  13. misscoleopteramolly says:

OK, I’ll ignore the obvious hypocrisy of Cheney basically spitting on public opinion if he disagrees with it, and embracing it when he agrees.

Cheney is right that demonstration, protest, and dissent in general is “healthy” (as long as it isn’t conducted in a violent way — and the tea parties weren’t violent). I agree.

However, I think he’s dreaming when he thinks the tea parties will have any kind of impact on Capitol Hill. The biggest problem with the tea parties is that their message was so unfocused that even if lawmakers were paying attention, it would have been hard to sort out what the protesters were really saying.

What were they mad about, exactly? Virtually every GOP talking point was shouted out during the protests — everything from gripes about real situations to hysteria over imaginary ones. The resulting cacophony left only the impression that Republicans don’t like Obama AND Republicans are really good at parroting talking points from conservative pundits. And this isn’t exactly news. Furthermore, the only lawmakers likely to see the protesters’ side were the ones already in the conservative corner.

    I don’t see much impact.

I think we have to be fair to our own fact-finding here. How did you come upon these numbers?

I don’t believe any one tea party was sizable and by itself significant, aside from perhaps the Atlanta event, but there was a vast number of smaller parties out there. The fact there were 350 or so tea parties out there, I tend to doubt that each event had an average of less than 100 people at each.

The fact that there were so many tea parties probably affects the numbers if people had considered one big “tea party” like that of the “Million-Man March”. More sites means more opportunities to attend an event, but I wonder how many would have attended if it was all held at one site.

The man is evil. Even his own party is telling him to STFU because they know he’s so unpopular any public appearance is detrimental to them. He doesn’t even care what his party thinks.

Why is that you have the Air Force stand down durning the 9/11 attacks???? Why is it that for the first time in our history, we didn’t have intercepter planes in the air within 10min of a flight going off course???? One day the facts will prove you and your friends were behind 9/11. Don’t worry, we know it was the Messod agents who went in to the WTC two weeks before 9/11 under the guise of building maintance (Building Blackout)for which no one was allowed to be in the building during that time. We have put the pieces of the puzzle together. Oh by the way…we know it was connetic energy that set of the charges in between floors. The problem I see with this argument is that it should apply to both sides of the fence. Neil Cavuto repeatedly shot down the Million-Man March for being less than a million men. Is this repeated reminder and coverage by Cavuto to deflate the numbers a sign that it too was as significant as the tea parties?

I’m probably in the minority here that considered the tea parties to be both significant in overall number and not completely “astroturf”, but I again stress that the numbers probably would have been quite low if it were to be held in one place.

I guess Cheney is into his “opposite-day world” now. First he wants classified memos declassified, and now he truly cares about the tea parties and believes they will have significant impact. Whereas, 67% of American people (67/100) indicated that the Iraq war was no longer worth fighting, he could only say “So?” But now that a whole 1% of the American people (if Silver’s estimates are correct) attended the tea parties, nationwide…THAT will have impact, in his mind.

Bush and Cheney often said there was “evil in the world.” What they didn’t clarify, nor recognize in themselves perhaps, is that the evil was within themselves.

That’s funny. The figures I’ve seen indicate the number is less than half that, but let’s say for argument’s sake that it was 700,000. That’s a relatively small number considering that John McCain got 59,934,814 votes in the 2008 election. That’s a very small fraction. I’m sure none of those present were people who voted for Obama with the exception of observers. The latest Gallup poll shows Obama’s Job Approval at 64%. That figure of 700,000 doesn’t look like anything to worry about.

So, we can say that the increasingly unpopular Republican Party can only manage to rally 300,000-700,000 people to protest despite all the advertising they did on FOX News and conservative radio (grassroots my butt!). I don’t know about the other liberals on TP, but I’m feeling pretty good about the midterms next year.

By talking about sucession, taxation WITH representation, etc. Isn’t your time and effort better spent fielding candidates that might win elections? Unemployment was 4.6% (8.5% now)

Our houses were worth 40% more.

Simple question for the voters: Are we better off now than we were two years and three months ago?

You really are some kind of enlightened thinker to convince yourself that the economic meltdown was the Democrats fault. It was the policy of the President and his administration that got us to this point. And do a little bit of research on ‘Republican Obstructionism’ in Congress since those elections. The democrats didn’t have a majority and Bush VETOED legislation they tried to pass. He denied there was a recession.

Schedule it for the 4th of July, to go along with the ‘1 million man march’ (snicker) by the gun nuts and the Tea Party Part DUH (:-)) by the conservonuts. Most of us should be free that day, what with holidays and all, and we could, across the country, gather in small groups. We’d need to do something like have a shirt or pin or sign to show our support for Obama. No major campaigns, nothing from the Obama administration and supporting organizations, just us networking through our contacts and bringing our friends and families along. Hell, nothing big or grandiose either. Just us having a quiet summer gettogether and expressing our support for Obama. Then let’s see how many more people are expressing their support of the US and Obama’s attempt to fix her compared to the Tea-Party Useful Idiots. And what do you want to bet that if the idea takes off and they get shut out like the idiots they are, they’ll accuse us of astroturfing? :-D

Funny how the roles reverse, eh? And how easily the Republicans adopt the roles they say that the Democrats occupied before the shift of administrations.

    Mr. Cheney:

Respectfully, sir, please: close your mouth and stop talking. 75% of the American people care not a lick about your opinions, nor trust anything that comes out from between your flapping lips.

You have zero credibility on everything. If you and I were on an elevator together and you ripped one… I would doubt the stench.

  115. Bluestocking says:

Yawwwnnn…no surprises here. C’mon, people…we all know by now (or at the very least, we should) what Cheney’s like. His choice of words and actions over the last eight years have made it more than apparent to anyone who was paying attention that he’s determined to approve of anything that his fellow neoconservatives do no matter what they do, and that he’s equally if not even more determined to condemn and criticize those who oppose or disagree with him even if they do similar things. In his own mind, any and all questions of ethics or propriety can be resolved by the application of a very simple formula — namely, Republicans = good/right/acceptable and Democrats = bad/wrong/unacceptable. The plain and simple fact is that he quite obviously cares far more about power than he ever has about the truth — so it’s only to be expected that he thinks public opinion ought to matter now whereas he didn’t think so while he was in office. This has nothing whatsoever to do with logic or fairness — it has everything to do with claiming a victory for his side, even if it means fighting dirty and breaking the rules. Why would anyone epect him to change his tune now?

  116. Bluestocking says:

Conservatives are looking forward to the mid-term elections and the next Republican Revolution. Democrats took control of the House and Senate on January 4, 2007.

Simple question for the voters: Are we better off now than we were two years and three months ago? — ConservativeForProgress

    **********************************************

Ironic then, isn’t it, that although the economy had already started heading south well before the 2008 elections…the voters decided to increase the Democratic majority in both house of Congress and to put a Democrat in the White House?
    Odd, that…

Even if you (rather too conveniently) choose to overlook the fact that the Democratic majority during the 100th Congress was slim at best in the House and nearly nonexistent in the Senate, you have apparently failed to perceive the fatal flaw in your own argument. By placing the blame for the failed economy — again, rather too conveniently — entirely at the feet of the Democrats, you inevitably imply that President Bush as well as the Republicans of the 110th Congress were collectively A) too apathetic, B) too ineffectual, C) too incompetent, D) too spineless, or E) a combination of the above to stop the big, bad Democrats. With all due respect, those qualities seem to directly contradict the image of Republicans which most conservatives like to promote. If you’re worried deep down that Republicans actually are too apathetic, ineffectual, incompetent, and spineless…then one is inclined to wonder why you insist on continuing to vote for them! No…the only reason why you’re so eager to blame all this mess on the Democrats is because you’re desperately trying to deflect whatever share of responsibility that the Republicans might in it — you know that as well as I do — and the only reason why you might be trying to deflect this responsibility is because if you can’t, you might have to admit that you were (*GASP*) wrong about something and might actually have to make changes and sacrifices that you don’t want to make.

Now that’s odd…what in the world gave me the idea that conservatives believe in taking personal responsibility when your own argument proves that they don’t?

Oh, that’s right! How could I have forgotten? Silly me…they only believe in it when it applies to other people.
