In a press conference today, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) broke with the Republican practice of referring to the Bush administration’s torture practices as “enhanced” or “harsh” interrogation techniques. As Ryan Grim notes, Boehner described the recently released OLC memos as outlining “torture techniques“:
BOEHNER: Last week, they released these memos outlining torture techniques. That was clearly a political decision and ignored the advice of their Director of National Intelligence and their CIA director.

Shortly thereafter, Boehner’s spokesperson Michael Steel e-mailed Grim, saying, “It is clear from the context that Boehner was simply using liberals’ verbiage to describe these interrogation techniques. The United States does not torture.” Earlier this week, when asked by CNS News if the US government did the right thing in waterboarding Khalid Sheik Mohammad, Boehner punted: “I don’t know, you’ll have to ask [the CIA].”

See if we do not call it torture, then it is not. Then there is the favorite quote of Bush regarding war. “Sometimes to need war to have peace.” Then it is not war as such, simply a way to get someones attention=war. All of this goes along with the new reality.
See like 1984 it is double speak. Not lying. Heavens no. Just a different way of seeing things. A way suited to a different time. For instance Democracy. We don’t wait to be asked to help a country obtain Democracy. No, that was the old way. Now we force Democracy on a country at the point of a gun. We give them Democracy whether wanted or not. And what better way to show how great it is, then by giving it to them our way? It is for their own good after all. And who to judge better then we that have it?
Boehner’s lapse in the new grammar will be rectified the next time he speaks. That accidental word of truth will be brought to his attention soon. Really soon. And he will again fall into line. Any truth that comes from that party is always accidental. Always.
