Rep. Ryan: Democrats have a ‘right’ to use budget reconciliaton.

ryan21.jpgCongressional Democrats and the Obama administration have floated using “budget reconciliation” to pass health care reform — where only 51 votes would be required for approval of a bill — to bypass the increasing number of Republican filibuster threats. In response, Senate Republicans have said they would “grind the Senate to a virtual halt“; Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) explained that reconciliation would be “the nuclear war.” Today, GOP up-and-comer Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), however, said it is Democrats’ “right” to use budget reconciliation:

“It’s their right. They did win the election,” said Ryan, R-Wis. “That’s what I tell all my constituents who are worried about this. They won the election. They did run on these ideas. They did run on nationalizing health care. So, you’re right about that. They have the votes with reconciliation. They nailed down the process so that they can make sure they have the votes and that they can get this thing through really fast. It is their right. It is what they can do.”

Notably, much of President Bush’s agenda was passed in Republican-controlled Congresses using budget reconciliation. At the Wonk Room, Igor Volsky writes that reconciliation is the key to achieving health care reform.

Sooner than later there are going to be younger and stronger Republican party members who will tell Rush and Steele to phuck off when they get the shrieking, threatening post-statement phone calls, and the Republican party may reincarnate.

Rep. Ryan looks like he may fit the bill.

    ***********************************************************

‘Nuff said — I think that should be more than enough for the Democrats to justify doing the same. What’s good for the gander is good enough for the goose — if one party decides that they’re entitled to pursue a certain course of action, then courtesy and fairness demand that they acknowledge the other party is at liberty to do the same if they should see fit. Anything less is hypocrisy of the most blatant kind, which is (or at least should be) unworthy of someone who wishes to call himself or herself a good leader.

    brothabill Says:

You’re entitled to your opinion but YES WE CAN achieve universal healthcare. It’s as simple as regulating healthcare and putting the greedy insurance companies in check. What makes this situation complicated is greedy insurance companies, greedy politicians, politicians who are only concerned about being re-elected and apathetic people who will not stand up and fight for their rights. Healthcare is a right! I don’t care if an American only pays 1 cent in taxes they have the right to health insurance and good healthcare. We pay for the politicians to have the best health insurance SO HOW IS IT NOT A RIGHT FOR US TO HAVE?

  29. leneeg says:

I’m as certain, as the sun rises in the East, the GOP needs to shift just a little to the left towards a more centrist and progressive political platform. They’ll need to do that, in order to gain the support of those Independents and moderaate Democrats who are not as whacked out as some of the looney Democrats in Congress. The ever widening and deepening chasm that has existed between the Democratic and Republican parties has nearly torn this country in half. This kind of political extremism could have dire consequences, much as the one that existed in this country over a century and a half ago. I’m not saying that there would be another civil war in this country, but the divisiveness of our politics is CAPABLE of sending this country into an unrecoverable democratic meltdown.

  30. researcher says:

hey we are the only country without some form of universal health care. but hey maybe we are the only ones that are right.

47 million americans without health care insurance and millions more with preexisting conditions that cannot get coverage for their condition.

over half the bankruptcies due to medical costs.

corporations paying high health care costs that other countries corps do not have to pay.

install a two tier system. general health care and a privitized health care system.

health care in american is about $$$$$$$$$$$$ not people.

capitalism and privitized health care will self destruct. it wont be pretty but it will occur.

  31. fire _ant_chavis says:

Another thing, I know people who died from cancer and they didn’t smoke, excercised, didn’t drink and we’re just good people – BUT SHYTE HAPPENS IN LIFE! How can we judge anyone and deny them the right to good healthcare?! God forbid if it should happen to you or your loved ones!

Stop the press, we have given up America’s ideals!!!!! The terrorist’s underwear is up his buttcrack!

You want to know what torture is? Asked the guys who captured in Vietnam. I am sure they would say theyd rather have a bucket of water to the face than what they went through.

And to address the future posts> yes, if you all want to meet up in Vegas in August and waterboard me. I am down with that. I have a medical conference to go to for 3 days. The trade off is that you all have to buy me a buffet at Bellagio’s and carry my nuts around the rest of the night.

Open heart surgery is 1000 times worse than waterboarding. Get over it. Who cares

You’re a subhuman troll, brothabill. And, I suspect, that you are either grossly incompetent or just plain lying about your medical credentials. I suggest you go back to some Reichwhiner blog where you won’t expose yourself as a fraud and a fool. Better yet, just go to Hell you effing creep!

Put a small “r” next Ryans name. The district he represents is (at least used to be) pretty heavily blue collar and racially diverse. Janesville, Racine/Kenosha, and Burlington have been hit pretty hard from what I understand. I don’t live in that district but it’s a sure bet Ryan had to talk some pretty “progressive” ideals to even get elected.

Not that I give a hoot about rethugs but it makes you think about what it might mean to call oneself a republican. I kinda feel sorry for some of the old farmers near me. Their idea of what it means to be a republican is hard to criticize. (See link) Their party has been rotting since Nixon, perverted by Reagan, and destroyed by Bushco & (dim)Son.

    http://edschultz.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=35067

What does it mean to be a republican today? I’d like to hear from some others on this…because when I think of it I throw up a little.

Maybe Ryans someone the old farmers could be proud of. But simply stating a fact don’t mean nuttin. Trials out

  36. pete says:

It’s not likely to happen any time soon, leneeg. The GOP is committed to a course that can only end in their destruction, or the destruction of our country. And all the smart ones have left the party. It’s a hopeless case where the only ones left are radical, dogmatic, extremist freaks.

Thankfully, all signs point to them continuing to marginalize themselves. I just wish we had recognized them before they did so much damage.

  37. pete says:

Oops! Some smart ones remain but the party is forcing them out. Look for Ryan to put an (I) or a (D) after his name if he wants to continue a political career. If he doesn’t? The GOP will do it for him.

It’s better to live in a society where people aren’t needlessly suffering and dying. It’s cheaper to pool all members of society into a single pool than to have lots of competing, limited pools. It’s cheaper still to provide preventive care to everybody than to fall back on emergency-room services for avoidable ailments.

    I’m not saying it’s a right. I’m saying it’s an effective solution.

    brothabill Says:

Plus, you’d have illegal immigrants seeking care, that would raise taxes even more. 1/4 of your paycheck minimum will go directly towards paying for other people’s medical problems.

There’s race problems with the Lebanese muslims with riots aways back with lebos attacking… You can google Crunella riots.

    Okay (Cronulla, btw).

A number of demonstrators wore clothing bearing racist slogans such as “We Grew Here, You Flew Here”, “Wog Free Zone”, “Ethnic Cleansing Unit”, “Aussie Pride”, “Save ‘Nulla”, “Lebs out”, “Fcuk off Lebs”, “Lebs go home”, “No Lebs”, and other discriminatory expressions were continuously shouted out by the mob.

Representatives from three far-right organisations were also identified handing out pamphlets, namely the Australia First Party, the Newcastle-based Blood and Honour and the Patriotic Youth League (PYL). The PYL describes itself as a “radical nationalist” group with links to the US-based racist skinhead group Volksfront and the New Zealand National Front.

Yeeaaahhhh, it’s not the Lebanese-Australians I’m so worried about.

I lived in Canada at one time with my husband and three children. Even as ‘landed emigrants’ we received free healthcare. My son was hospitalized as a result of a bone fracture…

As an American with employer-provided health insurance I’d have to find out whether or not a nearby doctor was “in-network” or “out-of-network.” If not, I’d need to locate the address of someone “in-network” in my area. Then I’d have to check what procedures they were likely to do against my coverage, to see what’s covered and what isn’t. Then I could go get it treated. So I pretty much avoid doctors, even though I pay for coverage.

We had wacked out and looneys in their the last 8 years. But I can see you are trying to sound fair and balance like fixed news is. Good try but you are what you are. A repug.

  80. PFWoody488 says:

The GOP has had plenty of opportunities to act in a bipartisan matter.
Instead, they chose to put their fingers in their ears, close their eyes, and scream NO!NO!NO! at the top of their lungs.
If they want to act like three year olds, then it’s time for a time out.
    Majority rules.
If the Republicans don’t like reconciliation, they shouldn’t have established the precedent by using it so many times when they were in power.

Hey Dems. If you don’t pass your agenda now, you will never get it passed.
If you waste this golden opportunity, then shame on you.
    Get it done.

    I live in Canada.
When I get sick or get injured, I go to a doctor.
If I get sick, I don’t worry about some insurance company screwing me over and sticking me with the bill.
    Don’t believe the lobbyist propaganda.
Government health care is the ONLY way to go.

The US is the ONLY industrialized nation without a proper health care system.
If your system were a good one, the rest of the world would be adopting it. We aren’t.
    That should say it all.

At this point it is pretty obvious to me all you morons want is a true democracy of mob rule and to silence the minority. Please don’t waste my or your time with “oh but the republicans did this and the democrats did that” I don’t give a damn and you shouldn’t either. How can you refute what I said in post #55 (read a damn book on government)? I strongly disagree with universal healthcare and I strongly disagree with cap and trade, so should my representative should just sit down and shut up? No he represents my voice just as your elected official represents yours. i.e the republic. Equal rights and equal say for every American not just the majority in power.

How is that obvious? Which minority are you talking about? There are a lot of them. I mean, should we give 50% of the decision regarding budget reconciliation over to UFO enthusiasts? Witches?

The OP is just talking about the same process that the Republicans used many many times while they had the majority. It’s a perfectly normal Congressional procedure. Perhaps if the Republicans had managed to withhold using it so much, there’d be some validity in the Dems starting to now. But it’s simply routine.

    RP2012 Says:

    I have to admit that I can’t.

Because I have no clue whatsoever what you were trying to say in post #55.

    RP2012 Says:

Not at all. However, he should play by the same rules as previously, and try to make some sense as well.

  90. NOLIESPLEASE says:

So I am familiar with this topic. I dont think healthcare should be a right. Some people dont deserve to have their healthcare paid for. Especially if they smoke themselves into needing very expensive healthcare or eat themselves into obesity and have heart failure. They are killing themselves, why should we subsidize massive spending where 90% of health care dollars go into the final 3-6 months of life for people who did all of this to themselves.

Any doctor who professes that health care is not a right is NOT A DOCTOR. I GUESS DOCS IN AUSTRAILIA DON’T HAVE TO TAKE AN OATH??? DO THEY.

As per your comment about having to pay for people who don’t take care of themselves….ever heard of SIN TAXES like ciggerettes, alcohol , gas tax (sure if you are to lazy to walk to the corner store, pay for it) amoung other taxes that WE PAY!!!!

If you are such a pig for money, what are you doing in Austrailia???? WOULDN’T THE US MEDICAL SYSTEM BE BETTER FOR YOU TO RAPE SICK PEOPLE OF THERE WEALTH BEFORE THE DIE?????

Because that’s what it is, the raping of individuals assets before they die. We all know we are going to die, the question remains will in be instantly (at no cost)or will it be an illness that causes me to loose all my wealth to the doctors and medical insurance companies?????

I have social health care here in Canada, and if any one tried to take away our system, HEADS WOULD ROLL. Recently the Canadian public had a contest…Who is our greatest Canadian???? DO YOU KNOW WHO WON????? THE PERSON WHO BROUGHT US SINGLE PAYER HEALTH CARE!!!! Tommy Douglas (Keefer Sutherlands Grandfather). That alone should tell you how much we value socialized health care.

I guess your pissed becuase the only industrialized nation without single payer is going that route. I guess you missed the boat on the gravey train. TOO BAD , SO SAD!!!LOOSER.

Take pride in what you do for the good of HUMANITY or get the FU** OUT OF THE PROFESSION IF IT’S FOR DOLLARS!!!

PIGS GET FAT AND HOGS GET SLAUGHTERED!!!

The rest of you Americans, don’t be fooled by idiots like this. I wish you knew the piece of mind we have as a nation knowing we will never go poor because of health care, we will never have to worry about how much money we have and most of all THERE IS NO CLASS SYSTEM WHEN YOUR IN LINE TO BE SERVED. THE RICH CAN’T BUD TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE. FU**EN PIGS!!

Thank you for lettiing me vent….have a great safe weekend you all. Cheers.

    “…Tasmania in December is cold”

No, dear little troll, it is not cold in December in Tasmania. You should do a little homework. In the southern hemisphere, December is summertime. The weather is quite balmy in Hobart and the island in general. This is easily checked via a lovely Australian government site that gives temps for the winter (June) and summer (Jan). Here: http://users.bigpond.net.au/bwi28/tas/climate.html. They even provide a comparison chart for C and F temp scales.
