Senate Republicans block vote on Sebelius nomination.

sebeliusweb04222.jpgThe Senate was expected to confirm President Obama’s choice for Health and Human Services Secretary today, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D), but Senate Republicans refused to allow the vote, calling her a “fairly contentious” candidate:

At the start of the session today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) proposed taking a vote after five hours of debate. But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) objected, arguing that lawmakers needed more time to consider her “fairly contentious” selection.

A handful of Republicans have complained about Sebelius’ support for abortion rights and her failure to report the full extent of campaign contributions she received from a physician who performs abortions.

The Wichita Eagle editorial department blog writes of the GOP obstruction: “Many of the Kansans of both parties who elected Sebelius to statewide office four times may have trouble recognizing thier cautious, middle-of-the-road governor in the portrait painted nationally of an abortion- and socialism-loving tax cheat.”

Update Other key Obama nominees the GOP are currently blocking from assuming their positions include Ashton Carter, nominated for Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics; Dawn Johnsen to head the Office of Legal Counsel; and Harold Koh as the State Department's top legal adviser.

Heaven forbid we have people nominated who have actual ideas of their own and aren’t in lockstep with the ‘official’ policies of either party…..

  2. Marie says:

The party of NO has struck again.
Just how long are they going to keep up this nonsense — it is costing the nation in efficient governance — but that is their plan isn’t it — to stymie Obama and prevent him from operating.

  3. noseeum says:

Republicans aren’t interested in providing Health and Human Services in the first place.

  4. Zooey says:

Wasn’t it Republicans who said the President should be able to work with who he wants?

  5. Marie says:

noseeum, you are right — repugs do not care about health nor humans.

  6. ralph the wonder locust says:

Well, you can understand why the GOP doesn’t want to see one o’ them typical Kansas liberals in Washington.

  7. Marie says:

Zooey, you have forgotten — see IOKIYAR.

  8. Hoodathunktick says:

They sure did say that. Oh, you think they should be official and get paid?

  9. ElBruce says:

Yeah, whatever. The most they can do is delay it slightly.

How is the Governor of Kansas “contentious?” It’s Kansas!

  10. Hoodathunktick says:

It is very ironic that the President who promised transparency in his administration has only really delivered on it in one area.

It is transparently clear that the Republicans are indulging in gross obstructionism for ideological/party reasons.

    How’d he do that?

  11. Curlew says:

What do these miserable bastards think they are accomplishing? If they have set out to demonstrate to the nation and the world what a petty group of childish losers they are they have succeeded many fold. If they are tying to show that they can “lead” then its time for more kindergarten training for them. At least they have the 30 percent of the nation that watches Fixed News on their side.

Obstructionist lemmings. Look at how they all vote the exact same, shows they never had an original thought in their entire pathetic lives.

  18. Keith H. says:

They might as well get over the fact that there is only one way to go after the subterranean rock bottom hit by their last administration and quit with all of the obstruction.

  19. Hoodathunktick says:

Can’t approve the appointment of someone who may have received campaign donations from a doctor but could appoint a judge who said torture was legal.

    Republicans have weird priorities.

LOL! I live in Wichita actually, and let me just tell you we Kansas liberals are rare! This place is like Utah’s little brother. So, you’d think they might be just a little less pissy about a governor this state’s elected twice!

  23. ElBruce says:

    American Patsy Says:

her failure to report the full extent of campaign contributions she received from a physician who performs abortions.

    Nice.

    Let’s look into that:

After Sebelius originally reported $12,450 in contributions from Tiller and others affiliated with the doctor, it was disclosed that total donations actually were $39,600, according to The Topeka (Kan.) Capital-Journal. Almost two-thirds went to her political action committee, the newspaper reported. After the disclosure, Sebelius told the Finance Committee it was “an inadvertent omission,” according to the report.

Meh, looks like old news. If there was anything illegal, her campaign would have been investigated and made to pay a fine or something. As it is, they were apparently required to amend their reporting, which has been done.

Here’s the real fun part, if you want to pick on her:

After her nomination, Sebelius acknowledged mistakes on past income tax returns and paid nearly $8,000 in taxes and penalties.

    Hah haaah!

  24. ralph the wonder locust says:

Keep up the good fight, ladybastet!

  25. Buckie Boy says:

    Republicans are scum.

    Fcuk the Republicans

  26. Eykis says:

Who cares which person gave her money or how much if it was legal???? IF you opened all of their donations, we probably would not be surprised at how much the Rethugs have received from their “dubious” or “unpopular to some” donors. The party of NO IDEAS will be virtual by 2010 election. YIPEE, Kathleen will be confirmed regardless. They don’t even know how to do a good filibuster and who is scared of them anyway?

  27. fire _ant_chavis says:

A handful of Republicans have complained about Sebelius’ support for abortion rights and her failure to report the full extent of campaign contributions she received from a physician who performs abortions.

NONSENSE! This is a non-issue and they know it. These rethuglican fools are so treacherous. They’re only screwing themselves into becoming an indefinte minority.

  28. kasinca says:

They should make ever wingnut who obstuct prove they are not closeted gays. I guarantee that these wingnuts have something they are hiding about themselves.

  29. Mikala says:

Just because they don’t want or know how to govern they don’t want to all the democrats a chance to succeed.

I can’t wait until 2010 so we can give the GOP something to really whine about.

  30. Ape-Man says:

How fast can the republicans be out and a new party formed of real ‘conservatives’ or whatever to replace them?

The conservatives have to put an end to this Obstructionist Party of happy delinquents.

  31. Game of Life says:

repugs are hell bent on ruining the US.

    they haven’t finished yet.

  32. Hoodathunktick says:

Since when is supporting the law of the land illegal?

Keep your religious, moral prejudices to yourselves. They aren’t legal or legitimate grounds for anything but your own fantasies.

Why are you right WINGNUT EXTREMISTS always so BENT on FIGHTING FOR RAPISTS RIGHTS to FORCE A WOMAN to BEAR YOUR STINKING BABIES!

It’s the only way they can have children.

  34. tarazan says:

Does anybody believe that if Republicans have a majority of 58-59 votes will listen to Harry Reid if he was representing 43 Senate seats…of course not.

Reid needs to do it their way and bypass these daily rantings and objections,if he has an intention to ever pass anything in the Senate.

If the case was reversed and Republicans were the majority..they will not pay attention to what Reid says.

Either Reid is too patient guy,or he is a wimp..

  35. magma_girl says:

What? Abortion is legal. This is ridiculous.

  36. LibertyLover says:

Dems are just not good on political theater anymore are they?

Why are they not decrying the Republicans on this and insisting on the Republican mantra of “up or down votes?”

  37. Xisithrus says:

Abortion isnt illegal and is therefore not a reason to obstruct this nomination.

  38. herecomestheangst says:

Fairly contentious is one of the new GOP ways of yelling “Fire!” in a movie theatre.

In the empty theatre showing Glenn Beck’s “The Christmas Sweater”.

  39. Uosdwis says:

Blah, blah, blah, they vote, you lose. Just be thankful the holds aren’t indefinite.

  40. teri3157 says:

Abortion is ALWAYS on the table as that’s all they got…Palin was in Indiana last week preaching to the choir, another handful of them are blocking Sebelius…

I wonder why Reid didn’t bring up the fact that abortion is legal, the objection by a handful is a non-issue (!) and the vote passes 10-1 or whatever the number maybe.

  41. hanshiro the antlion says:

    The Republican Pout-y…

  42. herecomestheangst says:

Jesus says abortion is against God’s law, so we have to suffer these fool’s mass psychosis because it’s protected under the Constitution under “faith”.

But if any judge rules in favor of gay marriage, that’s against the “natural law” and those who’ve already fallen behind education’s curve have at us with their “God, family, morals” tripe.

    GOP = God Only People

  43. Libellula saturata Annie says:

God, I hate Republicans. I really do. Feh.

  44. WaltinTexas says:

Once again- more baseless obstructionism by the Reich-wing.

  45. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Is this why Republicans didn’t outlaw abortion in the six years they had control of the White House and congress, they only want to pull it out as a weapon when they need it. They don’t really care.

  46. kasinca says:

The wingnuts should accept the fact that we elected president Obama and he deserves to appoint whomever he likes. They are losers, insignificant, and irrelevant. The sooner they accept their role as nothing, the sooner they will recover.

  47. dasm says:

    Republicans- despicable, childish, partisan, country-hating, party-loving, anti-government(when it’s a Democrat), tantrum-throwing buffoons. They’re truly sickening.

  48. curious says:

The only thing contentious are the Republicans. They are truly the party of no. There is no one, no matter who Obama presents, that they will not say no to. For no reason except to be saying no. They say it on every single thing or suggestion the administration makes.

If she were a combination of Jonas Salk, St.Francis of Assisi, and Gandhi with Mother Theresa thrown in, it would not matter. To get their nod, she needs to be anti-everything human.

Poor woman. Why would anyone want to work in government? Not me. If I were asked I would say outright. I would rather french kiss a chicken on the lips.

  49. LibertyLover says:

With the Republicans being so against any sort of health care reform they are probably just blocking her to delay having any person in this cabinet position for as long as possible so the economy gets worse and they have time to frame the issue like they have been framing it about not being able to afford universal health care because the debt is so large. It’s always about the packaging with these people.

  50. ElBruce says:

    herecomestheangst Says:

Jesus says abortion is against God’s law…

Jesus talked about abortion almost as much as he talked about homosexuality.

  51. Jim Wolf359 says:

    LibertyLover says@ 53,
Exactly! Same idea but different reasons for why they are blocking the other important nominations as well as the seating of Al Franken (D-MN) and Dan Murphy (D-NY20).

  52. rightwing-leftwing says:

Tell him what he’s won, Johhny!

    It’s a brand new car!!!

  55. Robt says:

    Hay Think Progress !!!!!!

Is there a list of Obama nominations that did NOT get blocked or stalled at all.

You know, nominated and voted for? No long stretched out interrogations or GOP caucus’ of obstruction?

  56. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

Yeah, the Repubicons have only had about six weeks to consider the selection of Ms. Sebelius. They need more time. They’re not too bright. Pack of selfserving American citizen hating torure loving Cheney ball licking bumblef@cks.
