It’s no secret that Fox News host Bill O’Reilly can’t stand MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. In fact, when a caller into his radio show had the gall to mention Olbermann’s name on air in March 2006, O’Reilly threatened to turn his personal information over to “Fox security.”
Yesterday, O’Reilly took his rivalry a step further. He sent his top henchman, producer Jesse Watters, to infiltrate the GE shareholders meeting and press executives on why MSNBC has a “leftward political slant”:
But one of those questions came from Jesse Watters [sic], a producer on “The O’Reilly Factor” whose criticisms were cut short when his microphone was cut off, according to several attendees. Watters apparently did not publicly identify himself as a Fox employee. [...]
GE pointed out that Watters had Fox News cameras waiting outside the Orlando meeting.
Attendees who spoke to THR said shareholders asked about 10 politically charged questions concerning MSNBC as well as one about CNBC. [...]
When he got the floor, Watters focused his question about MSNBC on Olbermann’s interview of actress Janeane Garofalo, who likened conservatives to racists and spoke of “the limbic brain inside a right-winger.”
“He (Watters) was complaining that Olbermann didn’t bother to challenge her,” another GE shareholder said.
Watters is reportedly a GE shareholder. Naturally, the Drudge Report is now blowing up this story with the headline, “GE shareholders outraged over MSNBC bias; Microphone cut off…”
Yesterday was not the first time that O’Reilly’s henchmen have confronted NBC/GE executives. In 2007, O’Reilly sent his producers to ambush Immelt while he was having dinner, pushing and shoving their way past restaurant staff in order to harass him. Of course, when outlets such as ThinkProgress and the New York Times have contacted Watters for comment on his ambush tactics, he has refused to respond.
No doubt that O’Reilly will use this incident to fuel his conspiracy theories against the left-wing “smear pipeline,” which supposedly includes GE, NBC News, Osama bin Laden, John Podesta, President Obama, and insects.
LOL! So O’reilly’s ratings superiority to MSNBC is so great that he feels the need send hit man Waters to the GE shareholder meeting?? ROFL!
All we ever hear from O’Reilly is how TP, MSNBC, etc. is no challenge to him. Yet he is sooooo sensitive that he has to attack you all with his henchmen.
How can Watters look himself in the mirror every day being such an O’Reilly stooge?
April 23rd, 2009 at 10:31 amEverything about Fox News news reeks of cowardice, lies and deceit. No wonder Murdoch is losing his ass financially, keep up the good work FAUX News.
April 23rd, 2009 at 10:31 amWait a sec — I thought that wingnuts defended Faux’s bias by crowing about their ratings?
If MSNBC’s ratings have improved as they’ve given Olbermann more leeway and brought rachel Maddow aboard, isn’t that simply the network responding to the marketplace?
Isn’t that the “capitalism” that the wingnuts defend so vigorously?
I’m so confused.

April 23rd, 2009 at 10:50 amSay, “P is for Progress”, can you explain the conundrum that faux News apologists display on TP all the time? The one I mentioned above?
That is this: right-wingers frequently defend Faux News against charges of bias by citing ratings numbers. (I have yet to get a good explanation for the meaning of this tactic, but that’s a different subject.)
Supposedly, the willingness of Faux executives to serve up the piping hot red-wing red meat is justified by its ability to attract viewers, correct?
So, given that the ratings for Olbermann’s show have grown as he’s gotten more vocal, and Rachel Maddow has improved the ratings over a year ago for her time slot, shouldn’t a free market fundamentalist applaud any move by a network that increases its performance?

April 23rd, 2009 at 10:52 amP, can you really say that progressives are the only people out there that don’t like confrontation? Tell me, in all sincerity, what you might do if a reporter comes up to you at an inappropriate time, shoves a microphone in your face, and demands answers. This is a situation that would make both progressives and conservatives seek shelter.
Avoiding confrontation is not a characteristic divided by party lines or political belief. It is a characteristic of the man or woman themselves. There are liberal heroes and cowards, and there are conservative heroes and cowards.
Don’t tell us that confrontation is something that only progressives run from.

There were no punches here. Watters attended a GE shareholder meeting as a Fox News plant. His mic was cut off because it was obvious he was a plant and his sole purpose was to disrupt. It wasn’t that he landed any punches, it was that such tactics are tiresome and time-wasting.
Kind of like the reason we flag trolls around here.
BTW — are you suggesting that if a MSNBC producer who happened to be a News Corp shareholder attended one of their shareholder meetings, and spent his time attacking the political bias of Fox News, that he’d be welcomed with open arms? I think not. He would have his mic cut off, and that would only be the beginning.
April 23rd, 2009 at 11:00 amIt absolutely amazes me how those people who this chickenshit chooses to ambush are able to restrain themselves during these gross violations of personal space! If I were not so old and feeble, I’d invite these sick puppies O’Really and cutie pie Watters into one of those public cage fights, winner take all — and I WOULD NOT be concerned of the outcome. Bobby, this isn’t about one journalist. This is about a tactic employed by FNC journalists. Plural. Don’t think that Mr. Watters is rebelling against the FNC system by going out to interview people through ambushes. This is a tactic employed by Griff Jenkins, both of which have been authorized by Bill O’Reilly.
This is not a protest against one journalist. This is all about strategies.
And I’d disagree with you totally. I think Fox has the better propaganda machine, hands down, in terms of rarely straying from GOP and conservative talking points.
April 23rd, 2009 at 11:07 amDid Mr. Pee vanish? I was hoping to get him to answer my question about free market fundamentalism operating in cable news.

Olbermann feud would have me pretty mad. There are a lot of retirement accounts and life savings on the line there. They’ve got some extremely important business to discuss. I’m sure a lot of the shareholders were concerned about their investments and wanted to get as much information from the executives as they can.
Why does FOX hate capitalism?
Watters should “confront” Olbermann in a more appropriate venue, like in church or when he’s on the can.

April 23rd, 2009 at 11:26 amBobby, perhaps you would care to address my question directed earlier to Mr. Pee?
Given that the perceived recent “leftward slant” of MSNBC is traceable to the higher visibility of Keith Olbermann and the addition of Rachel Maddow to the lineup, and both time slots have shown improved ratings over the past year, isn’t it simply a case of the network responding to the demands of the marketplace?
April 23rd, 2009 at 11:27 amIs our new friend Bobby really trying to claim that GE is left-leaning corporation?
I see we’re not meant to take him seriously. Not that there was much danger of that happening.

April 23rd, 2009 at 11:29 am… I mean, let’s put it in perspective. GE is a large corporation involved in a lot of businesses. For one guy to monopolize the shareholder’s time complaining about one question in one interview on one show on one network controlled by one subsidiary would be like someone standing up to complain that they bought a defective light bulb.

Assuming for the sake of argument (and ONLY for the sake of argument) that MSNBC has adopted a leftward slant to its programming… given that the most left-leaning programs are getting increased ratings over a year ago, wouldn’t this simply be a reasonable response to the demands of the marketplace?
After all, that’s basically the argument put forth by defenders of Faux News whenever they trot out ratings numbers, isn’t it? At least, I’m guessing that’s their argument, since I have yet to get a straight answer out of any of them on the question…
April 23rd, 2009 at 2:41 pmBilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

What, he bought 1 share on e-Trade the day before? And it’s not a legitimate question. It’s just whining and grandstanding.
ralph has it right. Or you could look at it this way: since FAUX News is doing so well in the ratings, then it doesn’t take a marketing genius to see that there’s definite market share to be had in having a blatantly left-leaning cable news channel, what with Obama being so popular and all. If you believe that MSNBC is horribly slanted, then they’re just following FAUX News’ business model with the other demographic. Which would be a very good thing for GE’s shareholders.

Of oucrse, one could just as easily, and with as much justification, say “”Bill O is scared to debate anyone who disagree with him. He refuses to talk about Keith O. and cuts off anyone’s mic who does. Bill O. is obsessed with Keith.”

It would be interesting to see a comparison of who actually has more guests who disagree with the host. O’Reilly would probably win that one. If he would stop talking over them, he could truthfully claim that his show is less biased than Olby. Olby, like Maddow, is a good source of the liberal point of view. He just needs to practice a little self restraint and to realize that he’s no Jon Stewart.
