After Appearing In Gore Ads Last Year, Gingrich Now Decries Green Economy Bill As ‘Path Of Destruction’

Last year, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich appeared in a “We Campaign” advertisement for former Vice President Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection to promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Speaking alongside Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Gingrich said, “We do agree, our country must take action to address climate change,” adding, “if enough of us demand action from our leaders, we can spark the innovation we need.” Watch it:

Today, Gore testified before Congress in favor of clean energy economy bill Waxman-Markey, calling it “one of the most important pieces of legislation ever introduced in the Congress.”

Gingrich is following Gore, appearing as the Republican witness to encourage the defeat of Waxman-Markey. Gingrich’s remarks reveal that he is taking a starkly different view than the proactive sentiment he displayed in the “We” ad:

GINGRICH: This bill is wrong for our national security. This bill is wrong for our economy. This bill is wrong for the government of, by and for the people. What this bill will do is continue to push us along that path of destruction.

Far from a “path of destruction,” Waxman-Markey will cap carbon dioxide emissions while investing in the creation of a green economy with millions of quality clean energy jobs. Rather than addressing the dangers of global climate change or pursuing solutions for developing a clean energy economy, Gingrich will use his hearing time to rehash his tired calls for more offshore drilling. While Gingrich has gone to great lengths to try to greenwash his image, he has always supported a pro-polluter agenda — from his Contract With America goals of slashing major environmental laws, to his successful work stopping the joint government-industry effort to develop a super-efficient car, to his mocking of simple steps to improve fuel efficiency.

Though Gingrich’s sheer hypocrisy is apparent, it should come as no surprise given he is well-funded by oil and coal interests.

The pro-torture just say NO party theme song:

I don’t know what they have to say,
    It makes no difference anyway,
Whatever it is, I’m against it.
No matter what it is or who commenced it,
    I’m against it.

    Your proposition may be good,
But let’s have one thing understood,
Whatever it is, I’m against it.
And even when you’ve changed it or condensed it,
    I’m against it.

    I’m opposed to it,
On general principle, I’m opposed to it.

    [chorus] He’s opposed to it.
In fact, indeed, that he’s opposed to it!

For months before my son was born,
I used to yell from night to morn,
Whatever it is, I’m against it.
And I’ve kept yelling since I first commenced it,
    I’m against it!

  4. raynman says:

    Just say NO!

Nancy Reagan, what hath you wrought?

  5. Lisa FTW says:

“This bill is wrong” — Newt translation: It doesn’t put $ into oil company coffers and it just might reduce our pollution levels. We CAN’T have that!

  6. Vituperation Toxicity says:

Is the Newtie trying to divert our attention away from torture and teabaggers?

  7. SKdeAnt says:

  8. Varanus komodoensis says:

That s/b NEWT IS AN OUTDATED REPUBLICAN WHORE!!!!

    Working on my dissertation here.

  9. calchala says:

Personally, he’s just trying to position himself to run against Obama in 2012. Also, this ad was made when there was NO chance of passing climate change.

  10. Keith H. says:

With a name like newt he must have gotten his ass kicked at school a lot.

  11. dbadass says:

What does Darth Bane think about this?

  12. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

What this bill will do is continue to push us along that path of destruction.

Black is white, up is down. The Republicans have gone totally insane. Does Ginrich really think that this is going to help his political aspirations or the Republican’t party? It’s like they have all become suicidal.

  13. Witch1 says:

So newt gets paid from big oil, coal and the reich winged TV blasters and that makes him credible.???.. ROFL…Newts are slimy little critters that live in damp crawl spaces..What the reich winged broadcasters need to do is just drag these roves and newts out and say there name and dito to all the usual crap they preach..Save the air time and usual speel for someone holding an office..Boner does a fair job with the nut stuff and as long as he keeps his tan up dated he looks better than the bloated roves and newties….LOL…P.B. & J

  14. TeleMan says:

Well, last year was an election year and the Repubs have to at least appear to reasonable.

  15. Briseadh na Firefly says:

to his successful work stopping the joint government-industry effort to develop a super-efficient car, to his mocking of simple steps to improve fuel efficiency.

So, Detroit continued to crank out inefficient gas-guzzlers. Then all it took was for the oil industry to crank up the price of gas to $5.00/gallon and the economy craters. People stopped buying what the auto industry was making.

The auto industry, having resisted making energy efficient cars for years, is going the way of the dodo bird.

And Republicans still resist making energy efficiency the path of the future.

  16. Zimzone says:

I’d say neuter newt, but he has no balls to begin with.

  17. Jackie says:

Newt wanted back in to the Political World and Climate Change had the door open. And being paid wasn’t bad either. Now with no Republican Leader except Rush the druggie, Newt see’s he can run for President and he’ll say anything to get that famous Bush Christian Religious base. Newt might even bring back the unseen unknown Contract with America.

  18. foolme1ns says:

eyeswideopen1 you should at least give Groucho credit.

  19. leftzone says:

    Hey guys, sorry O/T but:

MSNBC has a poll up about the President’s job so far for the first 100 days. Republicans are flooding it with “F” votes. Pass this address on and go to it to vote:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29493093/

  20. kasinca says:

Watching the wingnuts vote no on everything and looking at all indications that the citizens of the USA approve of the president, 51% trust him with the economy while 26% trust republicans (weird that 26% looks all too familiar). They just don’t get it and they play to the bottom feeding, knuckle dragging base of their party. It is fun to watch them become extinct.

  21. Zimzone says:

    19,
    Thanks…done

    “I’m Against It” Groucho Marx

  23. pax says:

    Quit quoting this fool!

  24. Hoodathunktick says:

I have a hard time feeling sorry for the US car companies when their TV ads are still focused on the gas guzzling, $500+/month lease vehicles in their line while the foreign car makers are touting their fuel efficient lines.

No one is too big to fail.

  25. Marie says:

    Last year – this year.
According to Newt, that was then and this is now.
Kind of like the way he looked at his wives and marriages, everytime he decided to dump one for another — that was then, and this is now.
And to wipe the “slate” clean in his mind, he became a catholic recently, to please his current love, and after his confession, his previous sins “don’t count” now.
That was then, this is now.

How about this, Newt? You used to be in Congress — that was then. Now – go away.

  26. Mikala says:

Global warming will make Salamanders extinct soon then we won’t have to put up with him anylonger.

  27. leneeg says:

It is amazing to me how many people who actually listens to whatever Gin”Grinch” may have to say. I hear him yapping, but I take what he has to say with a grain of salt. He has had his time in the limelight, it’s time for the spotlights to fade on him and then exit, stage left.

  28. herecomestheangst says:

Yeah, Newt sure can criticize but where, oh where are those solutions to the problems? Newt is the reverse of a black hole as he spills emptiness onto the masses every time he talks.

He might want to think about making a right turn off of this one way road he loves to travel on.

  29. drew3rd says:

Gingrich is a tool. Who cares what he thinks?

  30. Powkat says:

Why is Newtie back? He disappeared for years – and now here he is again, all over the news. I keep asking the news networks why they resurrected him (no answer of course.) It’s not like he’s done anything of value in the last 10 years – just give speeches and collect the bucks. I know he keeps getting mentioned as a candidate in 2012, but that would just be a repeat of 2008, with Newtie standing in for McCain. Okay by me, but I can’t imagine the 41 Republican senators who are up for election are thrilled.

  31. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    .

This, coming from a man who says he loves his country so much that he wishes it be attacked… AGAIN!

    .

  32. ElBruce says:

Notice how most of the R’s whining about the direction of this country don’t have jobs?

Oh, and it’s not so much a path as a symphony. ;)

  33. Davey says:

OK, so the Anti-Greens are paying him more money. After all, there’s nothing more important than making as much money as possible, so who can blame him?

  34. PFWoody488 says:

Hey Newtie. What’s your answer to global warming?
    Let me guess.
Tax cuts for billionaires and deregulation for the polluters because after all, they always put people first right?
    Give it up Gangrene.
You had your chance to run things and you left a mess.

  35. Hawkeye says:

Gingrich is a guy that simply never grew up. He acts like a 10 year old school yard bully. At least this is something Obama can shove down his throat in the 2012 election assuming Gingrich doesn’t destroy his chances by cheating on his 3rd wife before then.

  36. upright left says:

“After Appearing In Gore Ads Last Year, Gingrich Now Decries Green Economy Bill As ‘Path Of Destruction’”

And we know that if you believe we need to reduce “greenhouse gas emissions,” you have to support this bill. Only this particular bill is acceptable. Support it, or you are a hypocrite. ;)
