Wilkerson on investigating or prosecuting Cheney and Rumsfeld: If the public wants it, ‘let’s do it.’

Yesterday, former Colin Powell chief of staff Larry Wilkerson told Rachel Maddow that there are “six or seven, maybe even eight lawyers” from the Bush administration — including Jay Bybee — who should be “disbarred” for approving torture. “As far as going after leaders like Richard Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld,” Wilkerson said, “I just don`t think there’s the political will, and if there is, I don’t think there`s political skill to do it.” When Maddow pointed out that the public does support torture accountability, Wilkerson said, “then let’s do it”:

MADDOW: I’m with you on political skill. The question about whether or not it can be handled well. It seems like the political will may follow the public will, and if the polling data recently is anything to go by, the public is sort of all about seeking investigations at least, if not prosecutions in this case.

WILKERSON: And that’s what our country is all about, and if that’s the case, then let’s do it.

It’s not really necessary that we prosecute. Gather all the evidence and present it to the world court. Let them bring the charges. All we have to do is extradite.

Just what in the bleeding eyes of any deity you choose to pray to does political will have to do with prosecuting heinous crimes? Is America so morally bankrupt that we only obey the law when it is politically expedient?

If that is true, where does one send the flowers? The funeral home or the grave site?

Wilkinson has been out in front on this for years. He spoke up and fought back BEFORE Powell’s now infamous Feb 2003 meeting with the vial in front of the security council. (Read “The Fall of the House of Bush” as well as others like “The Greatest Story Ever Sold” by Frank Rich.

There are going to be more and more people coming out of the woodwork, piecing together the dots that Cheney thought he had obscured so well…..

  13. gus smith says:

Fitzgerald could have done us better – he may not have the political will. How about one of the U.S. attorney’s removed by Bush for political reasons.

  14. southtpa says:

I would also like to point out that while we prosecuted and apparently executed Japanese for water boarding The worst war criminals of all time were shielded by the CIA(OSS?). In Manchuria a germ warfare medical group actually vivisected allied POW’s. Alive and no anesthetic after they had been subjected to germ warfare experiments. I see no reason to shield CIA torturers. Would you want them around your children or grandchildren?

  15. hanshiro the antlion says:

    Investigation?

Put Seymour Hersh and Bill Moyers on it with advisory counsel. Wouldn’t mind if Matt Taibbi was on the research staff.

  16. ElBruce says:

Political will is only necessary for Congressional hearings or a commission of some sort – and those would just amount to political theater to sweep everything under the rug. See Warren commission, Iran-Contra, the 9/11 commission, and the Iraq study group for examples. However, DoJ investigations through the justice system would proceed or not solely based on the facts.

    .

    Dear Proud,
You can be proud that those that designed the SERE torture training program for our troops advised the Bush Administration that instituting this program for the use of real techniques used in the field would amount to TORTURE.
You can be proud that the AFM specifically states that many of these techniques are considered WAR CRIMES.
You can be proud that the use of known TORTURE techniques are acts of WAR CRIMES as previously determined right after WWII and Vietnam.
But mostly Proud, you can be proud that it is WAR CRIMES and TORTURE that you support…
… Yep, be proud of that. But really, what kind of person prides himself on the use of inhumane and illegal treatment of their fellow human?

    .

  21. Mycelium says:

Perhaps what bothers me most is hardly mentioned. The reightwing is trying to sell that torture (err..enhanced interrogation) was being used to extract information to protect Americans and/or American soldiers. Doesn’t work on me but I imagine it might on some “fence sitters”. In fairness, although reprehensible, it can almost be bought as understandable. But what is puzzling is that recent press releases indicate that the CIA knew all along that torture produces faulty intelligence at best. I’m sure if “they” wanted a taped confession of an Al-Quida/Saddam link, WMD location, or anything thing else they wanted to hear they had it within the first couple of interrogates. What is hardly mentioned is how much of this “torture” was performed as pure retribution? (C’mon…183 waterboardings combined with god knows what.)

I believe that the majority of this torture was performed as nothing short of extremely cruel and inhumane punishment doled out as just that. It’s all out there about what was done to interrogates and its description is nightmare provoking. I can’t imagine what was on those tapes destroyed by the CIA and how much worse it could have been than Abu-Gharib(sp?). Even worse…how much of this was done to innocent bystanders caught up in raids based on faulty torture-derived information? Remember “they don’t wear uniforms.”

Another thing the reightwing would also have us believe is that torture was implemented on only a few individuals. That certainly cannot be the case. We may never know how many were tortured but my guess is the number is in the hundreds. (How many might have been tortured for the Iran/IED link?)

And it’s not ok to torture “them” because they’re “head-choppers”. Capital punishment is fatal regardless of method. (We kill folks too)

Should Cheney and Rummy be prosecuted? You bet!

“”I just don`t think there’s the political will, and if there is, I don’t think there`s political skill to do it.”

That’s BS! Everyone able is afraid of what Cheney has on THEM or what will be done in retrobution. The only reason Cheneys sticking around Washington is damage control.

  32. gummble-bee-itch says:

    Proud Says:

I wish someone on the left would just be honest and admit that this is NOT about torture. This is about the lefts vile hatred of Bush and Cheney. If “enhanced interrogation” saved the life of one American or foiled one terrorist plot, I say will done and do it again. Before I get all the torture doesn’t work replies, if Obama had any guts he would release ALL the memos, yes the ones that showed the positive results of the interrogations.

The FBI has made it very clear that there were no positive results, and I’ve got a feeling that (a) they know more about this (or anything) than you and (b) that they don’t suffer from “vile hatred of Bush and Cheney.”

Check out the links I posted here. I know, “wah wah, NPR lefty wah wah”, but the people quoted are from the FBI.

If the positive memos exist, Dick Cheney has now broken the law simply by revealing the existence of classified documents. Therefore, they do not exist, because there is no law against revealing the nonexistence of classified documents.

    I agree.
The public opinion on issues that weren’t criminal (but maybe should have been) such as Iraq didn’t mean a thing.
But now public opinion is what it takes to investigate war crimes ? I saw some story yesterday about how the poll over the weekend was going to have a big effect on the potential of an investigation. So, there is an example of more of this need for public opinion b.s.
And I’m not making the connection as far as whether or not the White House can handle all of the challenges including this. I thought it was a DOJ thing.

Let’s play the deficits card! Peck! Let’s play the gay card! Peck! Let’s play the foreign bogeyman card! Peck! Peck! Peck!

Sh!t! No food pellets! The red bar is in tatters, the chicken’s beak is worn down to a nub, but still it pecks, and still no food pellets.”

It’s true if we don’t take care of this political mess caused by the teabaggers, we will be the next. Mainly, as it should be, there is a huge moral obligation to punish, rightfully, serious lawbreakers. Or we have no moral stance. This may lead to people taking the law into their own hands. We can’t have that.

A poor sap with a doobie would get arrested, charged, tried and convited with time and parole.

I say multitask these crooks to punishment. DO IT.

Don’t worry Ms. Maddow there will always be a two party system, just not with these idiots. Although I have a sneaky suspicion that you like them for their ratings. That 20% of idiots aren’t going anywhere, there will more than enough of stupid to go around.

In each the no investigation group was less than or around a third of americans. The End does NOT justify the means paarticularly when we have been signatory to treaties and documents that disallow torture. We have PROSECUTED our own soldiers for such violations; we have prosecuted our enemies for such violations. The world has prosecuted many for such violations. You cannot make an argument for torture; experts on interrogation testify it doesn’t work – in fact, the opposite of torture (gaining confidence and trust) is far more reliable. Former CIA agents who were tortured can speak to this with more authority than you or I, and they agree on what constitutes torture and why it doesn’t work. Your lealder John McCain has spoken out against torture – only recently when the RNC has decided to split hairs in defense of Bush&Co, he is waffling. We tortured – and now when our people are held by our enemies, we cannot claim the high ground and demand they not be tortured.
Others will not back us up in such claims.

While there are no guarantees, the prosecution of the guilty may mitigate some of the hate that’s been generated. If not? We, as a nation, will find ourselves reviled and isolated. Our citizens will not be able to travel, or trade, in foreign lands.

No nation can survive without the goodwill of it’s neighbors and partners. If we fail to prosecute our own criminals? We will find the world a much more lonely and dangerous place.

The minute one is assigned, all sources of information are going to dry up and the investigation will be done behind closed doors. We will never get the whole picture. 137. wiley says:

Hey PROUD! Some of the “terrorists” were real special.

Abu Zubaydah, his captors discovered, turned out to be mentally ill and nothing like the pivotal figure they supposed him to be. CIA and FBI analysts, poring over a diary he kept for more than a decade, found entries “in the voice of three people: Hani 1, Hani 2, and Hani 3? — a boy, a young man and a middle-aged alter ego. All three recorded in numbing detail “what people ate, or wore, or trifling things they said.” Dan Coleman, then the FBI’s top al-Qaeda analyst, told a senior bureau official, “This guy is insane, certifiable, split personality.”

Abu Zubaydah also appeared to know nothing about terrorist operations; rather, he was al-Qaeda’s go-to guy for minor logistics — travel for wives and children and the like. That judgment was “echoed at the top of CIA and was, of course, briefed to the President and Vice President,” Suskind writes. And yet somehow, in a speech delivered two weeks later, President Bush portrayed Abu Zubaydah as “one of the top operatives plotting and planning death and destruction on the United States.” And over the months to come, under White House and Justice Department direction, the CIA would make him its first test subject for harsh interrogation techniques.

Which brings us back to the unbalanced Abu Zubaydah. “I said he was important,” Bush reportedly told Tenet at one of their daily meetings. “You’re not going to let me lose face on this, are you?” “No sir, Mr. President,” Tenet replied. Bush “was fixated on how to get Zubaydah to tell us the truth,” Suskind writes, and he asked one briefer, “Do some of these harsh methods really work?” Interrogators did their best to find out, Suskind reports. They strapped Abu Zubaydah to a water-board, which reproduces the agony of drowning. They threatened him with certain death. They withheld medication. They bombarded him with deafening noise and harsh lights, depriving him of sleep. Under that duress, he began to speak of plots of every variety — against shopping malls, banks, supermarkets, water systems, nuclear plants, apartment buildings, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty. With each new tale, “thousands of uniformed men and women raced in a panic to each . . . target.” And so, Suskind writes, “the United States would torture a mentally disturbed man and then leap, screaming, at every word he uttered.”

The question isn’t whether or not torture is legal. The question is what does the law define as “torture.” Where do you draw the line? Can reasonable legal experts disagree? Is issuing a legal opinion with which others disagree a crime?

The techniques chosen for the so-called “Enhanced Interrogation Techniques” were based on techniques administered to volunteers who undergo special survival training in a course called S.E.R.E. The techniques chosen in the S.E.R.E. training are chosen for that training specifically because they are illegal.

Therefore, there is no logical way to say that the Enhanced Interrogation Techniques were legal. They were, in fact, War Crimes.

“I don’t give a rip if torture is legal or illegal, it works. These terrorists are not human in any sense of the word, they are animals who need to be destroyed. Grow up kiddies its us or them and I want us to be around after the bell rings.”

There is no hope for you.

Nope, there is no hope for my country if the likes of you are allowed to do what you want. It is illegal to trash the Constitution like Cheney did, obviously you think he’s a hero. The way I see it, if we torture like the terrorists, then we’re no better than them. Me, I think I have higher morals, how about you. My God tells me to love my brothers, which means any human. I might dis-agree with their actions, but they will be treated as I would want to be treated. Unfortunately, that includes you, so you’ll be in my prayers tonight. How will you feel as St Peter reads what you’ve said from his book? I’d say that your views won’t unlock the Pearly Gates; better repent brother.

    Proud Says:

Torture stopped the terrorist attack on Los Angeles, case closed.

I’m confused, I watch the news very closely and I haven’t seen any proof of this. Could you quote a source, other than Rush or Billo that is, to prove that the case is closed or is it just your mind?

Now proud if you’re still with me, I know how hard it it for you to read, but let me tell you a little story. I’m proud of the country I served for 26 years in the Navy. Unfortunately that country is hidden by all the BS being put out as patriotism. I was an Aircrewman during Vietnam which meant I had to go through SERE Training. Have you heard of it lately. I thought it was a great training experience and I learned alot about myself. That included that I was made to do the bidding of a person in control of my sleep, food, physical well-being and my breathing. I was water-boarded when the guards took all the officers away and I became the senior enlisted and senior person of the American War Criminals. Two trips to the board and I was convinced that I was in fact in a POW camp and that my life was in danger. I held on as long as I could and then when I couldn’t stand any more I gave in. I fought back by giving false information and adding an extra letter in my name when I signed the confession. My point is I gave them what they wanted, but I fought back as best I could. I agreed with McCain and I admire him, but I disagree with him in regard to fighting a war so I went with Obama, me a military man who had voted for Reagan and supported Bush when he went after bin Laden in Afghanistan.

So now that’s my bona fides, what are your’s other than a screwed up opinion of humanity and a loud mouth. What have you done for your country other than disrespect the very document I risked my life to preserve. Thankfully for you I believe in my country and you’re right to speak, but guess what I have the same right, despite what you and your cockroach buddies think. So if you don’t like what’s happening in my country, then leave. Find a country that has the same belief about human rights and be comfortable, but don’t stink up my country.

Just what in the bleeding eyes of any deity you choose to pray to does political will have to do with prosecuting heinous crimes? Is America so morally bankrupt that we only obey the law when it is politically expedient? fikrin ne?

I am with holding judgment until I hear from the Telibani lawyers and their understanding of Afghanistan’s law as it applies to torture. It is only fair that the playing, war field be level. Both sides need to play by the same rules. The simplest way to solve this problem is for both sides to agree to NO PRISONERS! All are to be shot and left where they lay. But alas, no prisoners no Intel. And this silliness about torture makes for bad information is all BS. I remember one time when I was tortured and I gave out information that was not accurate and my tortures found out about it they came back and really kicked my ass. If this method is used all information gleaned, then proved, from torture will be good information. Iced tea and croissants all around, Dummies!

  161. rightwing-leftwing says:

Thanks for your inputs, SlappyBastinado. Sorry to hear that your were tortured. I guess I have to say that even if torture “eventually” provides useful info (as you stated), it might be too late to use it.

  165. Philip50 says:

I used to respect Colin Powell. Now I realize that he and his staff had their own agenda, as evidenced by this blowhard, Wilkerson.

Our enemies must be laughing their butts off at this insane introspection that you liberals always put us through. Blame America first. Or, at least blame the Repubicans!

I believe that we should avoid anything that would reasonably be construed as “torture”. But one man’s torture is another man’s inconvenience. In the post 9-11 world in which we
face(d) real threats of catastrophic proportions, did our military and the CIA push the definition of torture to the fringe? Probably. But, would you rather be waterboarded or live with the fear of having your head cut off while making videos for your captors like our enemies did? Would you rather be stripped naked or have your plane flown into a skyscraper?

Who among you, if your family were in immediate peril, would not resort to any means possible to save your family, including torture, if that is what it took?! If someone invades your home, you are legally allowed to use deadly force to protect yourself. Yes, you can legally kill someone in that situation. I am not an advocate for “harsh interogation techniques”, but in light of killing someone, what is waterboarding by comparison if it saves an entire city!!!!! Would your conscience be appeased if you did NOT push the envelope in extracting that information if an entire city perishes as a result?! Do you think perhaps your definition of “torture” might be s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d a little in that situation.

If actual crimes were committed in the defense of this great country of ours, they should be investigated, but with all mitigating circumstances considered as well, and by a non-partisan body. One mitigating factor could be the interogator’s belief, true or not, that perhaps thousands of lives could be at stake. And, a Pelosi or Reid-led congressional hearing would be partisan, divisive, and extremely harmful to our country.

Contrary to what Maddow implies in this clip, the American public does NOT support prosecution of Bush officials. The liberal MSNBC’s own online poll shows that only 41% or respondants support such a move.

Most people like sausage. And, most people would be grossed out to actually watch sausage being made.

Americans want to be safe and preserve our way of life. Wars are messing, ugly, grotesque. However, we live in a very dangerous world in which many brave Americans are prepared to conduct the grotesque in the defense of liberty and the American way. I know many of those brave, committed young men and women.

Let’s have accountability and always seek to learn from the past. We SHOULD claim the moral high ground. However, let’s not wallow in our errors and let’s not politicize the tough decisions that have protected our country from further attacks since 9-11.
