Bush Loyalists Grade Obama’s Foreign Policy: A ‘Pathological Proclivity To Apologize’ For America

obamaweb0427.jpgForeign Policy magazine “asked some of the best foreign-policy minds in Washington and beyond” to rate President Obama’s first 100 days in office. “The result? 11 As, 16 Bs, 7 Cs, and a D,” Foreign Policy noted. Some of these “best foreign-policy minds” also included a number of neoconservatives and President Bush’s staunchest defenders. Surprisingly, not all of them trashed Obama’s first 100 days:

Meghan O’Sullivan, Bush’s deputy national security adviser: Grade – B+ “President Obama deserves the high marks for his treatment of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan in his first 100 days. [...] On Iraq in particular, he deserves kudos and gets an A-.”

Robert Kagan, Carnegie Endowment fellow: Grade – A-/B+ “President Obama scores high on Afghanistan and Iraq. [...] His policy toward Iran makes sense, so long as he is ready with a serious Plan B if the negotiating track with Tehran fails. His policies toward Russia are sound.”

While Kagan’s opinion of Obama’s Iran policy appears slightly enhanced from just last month with the added caveat of “a serious plan B,” he later said he would have given Obama an A- had he not “thrown a bouquet” to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at the summit of the Americas last week.

But the rest of the Bush loyalists on Foreign Policy’s list weren’t so friendly. Much of their displeasure with Obama seemed to center around the notion that Obama has somehow been spending his first 100 days in office apologizing to the world:

Elliot Abrams, served on Bush’s National Security Council: Grade – D “The ‘apology tours’ are not the administration’s worst offense, and would only merit a C. The D reflects the abandonment of brave men and women throughout the world fighting for human rights and civil liberties.”

Danielle Pletka, American Enterprise Institute: Grade – C “Some will be tempted to inflate their grade, as Obama has fashioned himself the anti-Bush. But ‘I’m not him’ is not a foreign policy, nor is an almost pathological proclivity to apologize for American power and leadership. [...] Obama looks increasingly desperate.

Peter Feaver, Duke University Professor: Grade – B- “What will matter is not whether Chávez says nice things about Obama, but whether the revived soft power brings real results. And it will get harder and harder to win applause lines by apologizing for the policies of your predecessor when you continue them in important respects.

“I think it expresses confidence,” Vice President Joe Biden said of Obama’s interactions with Chávez during an interview that aired last night on 60 Minutes. He also specifically took issue with critics who say Obama is apologizing to the world for the U.S. “I don’t know what he’s apologized for. For example, saying we should close Guantanamo is not an apology. That’s not an apology saying…we don’t engage in torture. He didn’t go out and say, ‘Oh, my God, the fact that the last administration did these things — we’re so sorry.’ He did say – he just said, ‘We don’t do torture any more.’”

To a Bush Loyalist, diplomacy means “never having to say you’re sorry.”

Since when has apology been viewed as a weakness?

This was always the problem with Bush supporters. They thought George W. Bush was America.

Elliot Abrams, served on Bush’s National Security Council: Grade – D “The ‘apology tours are not the administration’s worst offense, and would only merit a C. The D reflects the abandonment of brave men and women throughout the world fighting for human rights and civil liberties.” So tell us, was the Bush admin really so concerned with “human rights and civil liberties”? Sorry but I just didnt see it that way.

  8. amish_edison says:

Seeing as how Bush Loyalists have gotten EVERYTHING wrong for the past 8+ years, their dislike of it must mean that Obama’s foreign policy is correct and will be effective.

I leave for Germany tomorrow and I have a feeling I’m going to be apologizing for the last eight years of a chimp running the zoo (no offense Zooey).

  12. Hoodathunktick says:

The key to not ever having to apologize is to avoid doing things that need an apology. Most rational people know this is sort of impossible.

If invading other countries on trumped up charges, indulging in state sanctioned torture and causing a world wide economic depression are not things requiring many apologies, (to steal from Jeff Foxworthy)…you must be a Republican.

  13. P.D. says:

Oh please… Remember when Bush practically groped Merkel? What about Bush’s faux pas? Remeber he looked into Putin’s eyes into his soul? Give me a break. In Germany, they still call Bush ‘Herr Groper’.

I don’t know where this “Apology” stuff the Right-wing neocons are ranting about came from? I think they have a short memory when being so disgruntled by Pres. Obama shaking hands with Hugo Chavez, they simply forget that Republican presidents have shaken hands and smiled having a good laugh with some of the worst dictators in history too. But that isn’t really the issue is it…? As Sec. of State Hillary Clinton said last week during her hearing in the House Foreign Affairs Committee..that the Bush administration has ignored Chavez and the people of Venezuela for eight years…shouldn’t have been so surprised by a handshake; Pres. Obama is not Bush, and this is a different foreign policy…one of inclusiveness….whether the leader is dislik able or not. For Obama to bravely make it known that bickering back and forth between the USA and the European continent about blaming each other and the lack of trust that has been brewing for a long time and getting stronger the last eight years, this is a very honest heroic thing to do and Pres. Obama deserves much praise for that…and he did get that praise from the folks who heard his words overseas and to many here in the USA as well….I guess that really is the problem the neocons are having with Obama…not the fact that he is forcing America and the world to see the light and the errs of their ways, only to make the world a better place, because we have to share it….They just can’t deal with the fact that the era of Ronald Reagan is long gone…CHANGE HAS DEFINITELY COME TO AMERICA!!!! Thanks President Obama!!!

  20. TXProgressive says:

Yeah, and these are the brain sturgeons that alienated us pretty much from the rest of the world. I take it as a compliment that they don’t agree with Pres. Obama.

Pres. Obama has intelligence and intellect on his side – he doesn’t need the phony cowboy bravado. Bush on the other hand didn’t have the intellect or intelligence to punch himself out of a wet paper bag – he needed all the chest puffing he could muster.

    Brushing them off…

Hey reality, I don’t recall hearing of many burning effigies of President Obama internationally although I’m sure some of those teabaggers have had their own private parties (in hood off course). The only international group that I can think of that is sorry to see Dubya retire is al queda.

That 28% is now down to 21%. Recent ABC/WP poll:

Generally speaking, do you usually think of yourself as (a Democrat), (a Republican), an independent or what? IF NOT DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN: Do you lean more towards the (Democratic Party) or (Republican Party)?

    Democrat /Republican /Independent /Other /No op./Lean Dem./Lean Rep. /No Lean

    3/29/09 36 25 33 5 1 15 16 8

They have dropped 4% in the last month.

Do you approve or disapprove of the way (ITEM) are doing their job?

    Republicans in Congress:

Here they have lost 7 points in the last two months.

B- on the economy (Geithner and Summers aren’t favorites). There’s still too much Wall Street deference and I’m starting to worry that too much pressure is being applied on the auto workers. Besides that, I can’t give an “A” as a result of events beyond the president’s control, such as staggering job losses. No doubt the stimulus is saving jobs in critical public services. And that helps curtail losses in supporting businesses.

It amazes me that the conservatives think that Obama is “apologizing” for America, when he is going forth and showing the best about the USA. He has shown that we can move from an antiquated, oppressive administration which bullied other nations and its own people, to a progressive administration which tosses out such notions in favor of real, constructive negotiation and pragmatism.
God knows that the conservatives have much to apologize for, but it’s not up to Obama to do it. It’s up to the creeps who tried to ruin our country as well as the rest of the world over the last 8 years.

When one offends someone, they’ve done the wrong thing; not to apologize is to refuse to do the right thing and compound the offense. Refusing to apologize is not a sign of strength but weakness. After all, one who refuses to say they’re sorry acts out of fear, but one who admits they were wrong and asks for forgiveness acts out of courage.

Now go read a couple books about life and grow up.

President Obama has been very effective these first 100 days. Stem-cell research, closing Guantanamo bay and passing his stimulus. He has emboldened our enemies and appears to be weak to the world (see Al-Jazeerah) but I think he will be tough if he has to. We will see. His response to the swine flu has been excellent. Again, we will see. Overall, a solid B.

  84. curious says:

Changing policies is not the same as apologizing for America. And now having said that. If Bush had not left us so much to apologize for, these Bushies would not have to worry.

They are part and parcel lovers of the Bush criminal enterprise. And now when Obama goes overseas, these Bushies know he reminds by sight alone, what Bush did in our name. And it bothers these Bush lovers. It bothers them because they have no longer the joy of seeing torture. They have lost the fun of watching the Constitution being shredded. And they know how other country’s now view our damaged Democracy.

And they wait in the wings. Hoping for the chance to resurrect their party and do it all over again. With a different outcome of course. It is not what Obama has said. It is the fact of him. And the fact that he is allowed to say anything at all. There is nothing no matter how innocuous that they will not leap on.

The Republicans hate him. He is a progressive, he is President. And most of all he is black.

I didn’t expect that from you, drew3rd. Thanks.

The “emboldened our enemies” thing I would take some issue with, however. I think he’s emboldened the societies that previously supported terrorist networks to haev the courage to shut them down, but it’s a long slog ahead.

I’ve never been one to fall for that “emboldened” talk anyways. What matters is results, not who or who isn’t “emboldened,” or what “message we send” by taking necessary action. The actions are what matter.

Can you cite a link regarding whatever it was that Al-Jazeera said regarding emboldening?
