The condition should be a false confession of some kind (or hell, just admit the truth – make him sign a document declaring water boarding is torture). Then drown him until he signs. He’ll have lived up to his word and actually gone through water boarding. There is no way that could backfire. He could last an hour, but he will eventually sign whatever you put in front of him which is exactly the point of the exercise.

Water boarding has been prosecuted by us in the past as torture and a war crime. Them’s just the facts so there’s no “well we just need to really define torture first”…it’s defined already. Oh, and it’s completely illegal under all circumstances, always. There can really be no dispute (assuming you choose to use facts) that we tortured prisoners and that doing so, and ordering others to do so, is a crime that has a precedent set of 15 years hard labor up to and including death by hanging as its penalty. So, you conservative loyalists, feel free to explain to me why we shouldn’t even consider investigating, let alone prosecuting, criminals? And before you say anything about partisan retribution – the investigation can include anyone and everyone regardless of the big D or R as long as there is probable cause to investigate their involvement.

Second, assuming Ollie North really did tell him about a real water boarding experience then it was probably something along the lines of what an old coworker of mine told me when he was water boarded as part of his Special Forces training which was thus, “Even though the situation was completely controlled and for demonstration purposes, I was absolutely certain that I was going to die and that was 9 seconds after they started.” Because, you see, part of the practice is not letting you take a nice deep breath to hold. Interrogators will wait for you to exhale…you have a cloth over your face so you have no idea when it will begin. You want to just hold your breath to prolong the anxiety? Have at it; it only makes it worse when you invariably have to let it out and gasp for air, which in this case will actually be water.

In a similar vein, having had a near-drowning experience myself it’s more terrifying that you could possibly imagine. I’m convinced that no amount of mental prep could keep one calm through that. I just happened to be river rafting at the time, but as surely as I type this today I’d have told you anything you wanted to hear if I could just get some air into my lungs.
