Steele may lose control over RNC purse strings.

After becoming RNC Chairman, Michael Steele boldly predicted the Republicans would “win” the contest for an open congressional seat in New York. He was wrong. Steele also threatened to withhold campaign funds from Sen. Arlen Specter, after Specter voted for Obama’s economic recovery package. That helped fuel Specter’s departure from the Republican Party. Now, some members of the RNC are taking matters into their own hands and trying to limit further damage that Steele can do to their party. The Washington Times reports:

steeleA battle over control of the party’s purse strings has erupted at the troubled Republican National Committee, with defenders of Chairman Michael S. Steele accusing dissident RNC members of trying to “embarrass and neuter” the party’s new leader.

Randy Pullen, the RNC’s elected treasurer, former RNC General Counsel David Norcross and three other former top RNC officers have presented Mr. Steele with a resolution, calling for a new set of checks and balances on the chairman’s power to dole out money.

Steele has rejected calls for his resignation. “Not me Baby! Nuh-uh. Not happening. No way, no how!” he said in March.

That clown has no control anyway.

  2. Mark701 says:

To be honest, the guy has done so much damage to the Republican Party it’s like he’s a covert democrat. I hope they keep him on.

  3. Art says:

    Heck of a job, Michael!

  4. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

“…former top RNC officers have presented Mr. Steele with a resolution, calling for a new set of checks and balances…”

    Wait a minute…Regressives demanding “checks & balances”??!!
This can’t work out good for the Reps.

  5. Uncle Ho says:

Let’s see, Specter votes IN FAVOR of Obama’s stimulus package against GOP lockstep goose-stepping, Uncle Tom Steele threatens to withhold campaign funds from Specter, Specter gives the GOP a one-finger salute by switching parties.

Man, you can’t make this shit up.

    PRICELESS!

  7. texasrick says:

I for one firmly support Steele’s control on RNC…it’s the BEST possible thing for the Democratic party.

  8. tombaker says:

The R’s should just hang it up for good. Preserve a little dignity – however small that scrap may now be.

Then we could have D’s as the status quo, mainstream party, and some new Green or Progressive organization as an opponent to their left.

Righty Americans, such as they are, could then just slink back into the cellars and dark corners and brood their lives away, which is all they’re fit for in the first place.

  9. hormiga brava chavez says:

I want Steele to stick around. He’s great entertainment.

  10. misscoleopteramolly says:

If there’s any way the RNC can strip Michael Steele of all meaningful power but still keep their look-we’ve-got-a-black-guy-too as window dressing, they would.

But they’ll look a lot less hypocritical (not to mention less racist) if they either A) let Steele do the job they elected him to do, or B) kick him out and elect somebody they’re willing to support.

However, the situation as it stands is doing wonderful things for the Democrats, so if they stay the course, I’m happy.

  11. Buckie Boy says:

Michael Steele boldly predicted the Republicans would “win” … He was wrong.

It’s all part of his master game plan…being wrong proves he was right all along.

They are slowing dissolving in to a meaningless pile of foul goo.

  12. 08Dariana says:

Maybe his masterplan was to kick every moderate out of the party and then when his the only one left Ditch the party himself and scream mission accomplished! Lol

  13. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Sure he’s losing the purse strings but he can still hold on to Rush’s apron strings.

  14. ElBruce says:

The R’s might be doing a better job if they had been willing to back any of Steele’s plays to begin with. The only explanation I can come up with for their utter lack of cohesion is that they can’t stand taking orders from a black man.

  15. CParis says:

Why are the GOPers dissing the Black man?! I never heard about the previous RNC chair whathisnameWhiteGuy getting this kind of treatment!

Way to get more people of color on your side!

  16. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

You mean the purse strings that Fatboy Limbaugh controls?

  17. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

Whigs, Federalists, KnowNothings, what do they all have in common with the Publican party?

  18. Taguba says:

Mike is off to a great start. Losing the NY -20 seat and browbeating Specter into abandoning the party. He may even get Snowe and Collins to do the same if he publically degrades them and endorses more primary candidates that are not them. Take the rock to the hole Mike !!

Is this the “Hip Hop” style he was talking about ?? FOSHIZZLE !!!

  19. KaneJeeves says:

We should deluge the RNC with emails: identify yourself as a far left liberal, and demand that Steele be removed from the RNC. Their knee-jerk reaction will be to keep Steele in place. Mission accomplished!

  20. maxamillion says:

Hey Mike Steele, I don’t think those rich white folks in the republican party trust you around thier money. This is kinda like a “three black guy get into a elevator and the only white woman on there clutches her purse”. Welcome to the republican party.

  21. Game of Life says:

    TEEEHHHEEEEHAHAHAA

Any steeley damn news is good news.

The only thing wrong about the teabaggers dissing him is that they are all like him.

Just as repugs don’t understand Colbert ragging on them, they don’t see the overflowing similarities between steeley damn and the repugs.

  22. Winski says:

Yeah baby, let’s have some more of that strateegery…Papa Bling style…”We be bad”….’Who’s next?”…..

    Dopes…

  23. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Republicans couldn’t see that not all black men are the same the same way they gave us Sarah Palin because they think all women are the same.

  24. MapleStreet says:

In Steele’s defense, I have to note that he has an impossible job. Can you imagine anyone taking on and setting a new and glorious course to the 2009 Republican Party (hmm, not a very fun party, either).

Not that I think Steele has done that good a job. Just that the task is impossible too.

  25. EmTee says:

It must be embarrassing to be him.

  26. moonsha says:

Steele should keep doing what he is doing. Who knows maybe Michael really is a “STEELE DEMOCRAT”.

  27. Marnie says:

“Steele has rejected calls for his resignation.”

Steele is a keeper so far as I’m concerned. Everytime he opens his mouth stupid comes out and the RepoTalibans loose another voter.

    I can live with that.

  28. bigtime patriot says:

Sounds like the Rebulicans want some kind of “group think” “Socialistic” control of the budget, where the bright thinkers at the top, like Mr. Steele, have to kow tow to the wishes of the “so-called majority” of Republicans. Why do the Republicans want to become socialists like that? Do they hate America? They must. They must hate America…

    I knew it!!
