GOP Leaders Shut Steele Out Of New Initiative To Revive The Party

Last night, CNN reported that leaders of the GOP are launching an initiative called the National Council for a New America as a “new effort to revive the image of the Republican Party.” The party heavyweights spearheading the group include the House and Senate Republican leadership, including Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA); former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney; former Florida governor Jeb Bush; and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).

Though the letter announcing the National Council promised an “open policy debate” with “not a Republican-only forum,” Cantor disputed the notion that the initiative is actually a move to shift the party away from far-right ideas. Speaking on CNN last night, Cantor admitted it is “not so much a rebranding effort,” but an avenue to “begin to lay out the solutions that Republicans have.” Watch it:

Conspicuously absent from the list of Republican heavyweights participating in the effort is current RNC Chairman Michael Steele. Steele was elected on a platform to rebrand the GOP, promising an “off the hook” public relations campaign. But after a string of missteps, conservatives are now pushing a resolution to revoke the Chairman’s power to dole out money.

Despite Steele’s historic election as the first African American to lead the GOP, the party appears to be marginalizing his power while building its image based on the recycled ideas of Newt Gingrich.

Update The Politico reports that although Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) had been invited to the join the National Council for a New America, she has not responded to the request. On CSPAN's Washington Journal, Newt Gingrich claimed that he is not a part of the rebranding effort because he is not currently "in office." But Council members Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney are not in elected office as well.

Did I miss it or was no explaination for why the party image might need to be “revived”. Is that not in and of itself acknowledgement of a failure to succeed as is?

  10. misscoleopteramolly says:

Lots of sizzle, but almost no steak. The GOP seems to be all about marketing, but they haven’t put forth anything of substance since the election.

So I guess it really is pretty much like the 1994 Contract with America — a document full of rather lightweight ideas designed to sound good.

And Steele? Apparently his party neglected to tell him he’s just part of the marketing — mere window dressing — not someone elected to actually impart his own ideas.

“begin to lay out the solutions that Republicans have.”

Bla, bla, bla, bla, bla, bla….translates to : TAX CUTS FOR THE UBER RICH

As if rebranding themselves is going to help. I’d love to see how this ‘revival’ pans out. Steele is nothing more than a token to them. Not only is Steele a token, he has become a problem child that they’re going to have a hard time silencing or getting rid of.

That’s funny – NOW, all of a sudden, they want to ‘listen’ to the American people. DIDN’T THEY HEAR US ON 4 NOVEMBER 2008? They didn’t say which population of American people. Did they mean all of us anti-American democrats?

I suspect Michael Steele will now try to go the way of Arlen Spector, I personally don’t want him in the Dem party! I would suggest that Steele, Bachmann, Palin, Sanford, Perry, Jindal, etc., start their own party by listening to the same old lunatic fringe in their pro-American red sectors.

You got that my friend. It will like racism if they get rid of him so they`ll do the next best marginalize him and move on with e Newtster and his new old program with a new name, that only the the re-pukes have is the “audacity of Nope” and tax cuts for the wealthy and nothing else.

How can you revive a party that is based on conservatism? Do they know what the hell CONSERVE means? The whole party uses information from the PAST to try and fix things that are happening right now. They don’t come up with new ideas, they are ANTI-PROGRESS. They think things that worked in the 60s apply to today. What a bunch of morons. Lets make a time capsule and send them all back to the 1800’s.

  32. ElBruce says:

This is like the tenth iteration in three months of “we’re a brand new Republican party! Everything’s different! We’re coming back with a new angle!” followed by complete incapability to explain what they’re going to do different, followed by an admission that they haven’t abandoned any of their old, failed ideas whatsoever.

  33. Sandoz76 says:

It is hard to feel much of anything about a story like this because I feel no ownership or engagement with the Republican party. It occurred to me, however, that these are people who decided they wanted a life, a career, in public policy and public service, and I’ve suddenly grown resentful. As a party that represents the opposition of my own political goals, they do frankly still owe me something. They do still owe me challenges and alternatives. They owe me competing solutions. They fail miserably, parroting the SoS I heard from them since I’ve been a little kid.

Actually, neither. As a Mormom, the Mittster wouldn’t want to encourage using either caffeine or alcohol. I’m figuring he just brought a jug of 2% milk.

  37. ElBruce says:

    Hey, check this out:

“I have just returned from an overseas trip to learn that the five of you have developed a scheme to transfer the RNC chairman’s authority to the treasurer and the executive committee,” Mr. Steele wrote in an e-mail he sent to Randy Pullen, the RNC’s elected treasurer, and Blake Hall, the committee’s general counsel, as well as to three former RNC officers.

    This is gonna get awesome!

  38. Bobwurst says:

Face it, if Steele was the head of the Democratic Party, we’d be calling for his head too. It’s not racism that is driving the repubs to dump him. It was racism however, that drove the repubs to put him in that position in the first place…

  39. christopher wiwi says:

The re-pukes don`t like change they are reactionary as opposed to Dems who are proactive and try to tackle problems as they happen. The re-pukes don`t stand for anything but tax cuts for the wealthy, war mongering, racism, hatred, bigotry and all of this while spewing forth their Reich wing Christo fascism HYPOCRISY.

  41. Pennsylvanianne says:

Reviving this sad excuse for an American political party is impossible as long as the same old faces (Newt, Rush, Boehner) are in charge. What this patient needs is a complete personality and moral transplant and a completely new face to boot. I’m not sure there is any hope of survival. Consider the party DOA.

Just think how awesome it would be if you could get Michael Steele and Sarah Palin into a brainstorming session about the new identity for the GOP.

The ideas they came up with would be off the hook with that patriotism which is so admired now a days.

  47. christopher wiwi says:

Why re brand? Why not come up with some new ideas instead of”NO’.These guys are a hoot, they are so conservative that they have no new ideas except re branding which tells me it`s the “same ol same”, man the tent is getting smaller and smaller, hell pretty soon they`ll have the back seat empty in the tiny clown that they drive around in, just Becky, Newtster and Flush and all three will have their own steering wheel…..

    rebranding effort?

How about renaming the party after a couple of prominent Repugnicans that symbolize what the GOP is all about? May I suggest the DICK Party in honor of Nixon and Cheney?

  66. arleang says:

Someone should tell Steele that he is the wrong color to be a leader in the GOP, a party whose members are wrinkled, wealthy and white. In fact many of them are so religious that they are waiting for the heavens to open to them, for the Jews to convert and climb the golden stairs with them, and (here’s the joyful part) the remainder of the humanity (the black, brown, red, yellow and white unbaptized) to be swept away or burn in eternal Hell.

I sure do miss conservatives. Too bad they became Republicans.
