Secession-ready Texas has received most federal disaster assistance of any state.
Just weeks after declaring that Texas might secede from the union because “the federal government has become oppressive,” Gov. Rick Perry (R) today asked for more federal aid when he “issued a disaster declaration” because of the swine flu. Mother Jones’ Jonathan Stein found that, since the beginning of FEMA’s record-keeping, Texas has actually received more federal assistance from FEMA than any other state:
A FEMA spokesman told Stein “that a major disaster declaration is issued when a governor ‘determines the state’s resources are overrun.’” FEMA reimburses at least 75 percent of the state’s recovery costs; currently, the federal govenrment is covering 100 percent of Texas’ Hurricane Ike recovery effort.

On the link @ #18, I posted a picture of my son’s birth certificate. When I took a picture of it, the Maine State Seal did not show up……until I turned it over and took a picture of it. This is the same thing that happened when Obama’s birth certificate was photographed.

Perhaps you should consider siphoning a few thousand from the precautionary funds marked for swine flu and have someone cure that nasty case of foot-in-mouth disease from which you appear to be suffering.
Hang on…wait a minute. Now that I think about it, does anyone happen to know what the conditions or requirements are for a nation applying for foreign aid from the United States? Frankly, I wouldn’t put it past someone like Perry to try that…secede and then apply for foreign aid to make up for the fact that they’re no longer getting federal aid!

But at lot of that FEMA money was due to Hurricane Katrina when Texas immediately took in and fed and sheltered thousands of people from Louisiana. Dallas and Houston as well as the state spent millions. And much of that was reimbursed.
I don’t like Perry, but he did do a very good job of coordinating the Katrina response.
Going ballistic on a whole state because the dopey governor said something really stupid is a lot like what the freepers do. Be a little patient. Texas is going back blue.

We beg to differ. FactCheck.org staffers have now seen, touched, examined and photographed the original birth certificate. We conclude that it meets all of the requirements from the State Department for proving U.S. citizenship. Claims that the document lacks a raised seal or a signature are false. Texas is the poster child for conservative-libertarian policies.
Texas has long been run by libertarian-conservative policies. (Even when Texas was Democratic, it was mostly conservative Dixiecrats.)
The result? Texas has the worst schools, the worst health care, the worst social services, the worst roads, the worst zoning laws, the worst justice department, the worst schools, the worst pollution, and–as you can see–the worst Governor.
If they seceded, they would be dead within weeks.

Texas has declared more federal emergencies than any other state but the post doesn’t have any data on how much money any of the states actually received. (It probably will turn out to be the most but, until that is documented, a little more accuracy, please.)
Having said that, I’m trying to see what the downside for the rest of us would be if Texas did secede. No John Cornyn. No Kate Bailey Hutchinson. No Dallas Cowboys. Let ‘em go …
And Sven (89), you’re wrong, regardless of the net flow between TX and the US, these declarations are a tacit admission that Texas does not have the resources to cope with these disasters. One of the benefits of being in a federation is the ability to pool resources. A direct contradiction to the secession argument. (Althugh the no Cowboys benefit still stands.)

The loss of civilian jobs directly with the military, the loss of revenue and jobs from business that support bases and their government employee. Lost property tax from empty housing, and closure of local businesses, lost sales tax. In fact entire towns would cease to exist, since, for some, their income relies almost 100% on money flowing from a neighboring military base

Texas is a really nice state. Maybe parts of it suck, but same can be said of any huge state like Texas or Cali. I think Austin, where I live, is one of the best places in the nation to live and we have great roads, little pollution, great schools, a great university. The cost of living is low all over the state, which makes it easier to see a doctor since we have more money. Hell, healthcare is a major disaster in all areas of the country. Anyway, what you said was incorrect.
You’re confusing Texas with the GOP a$$holes in government (state and federal) like Rick Perry, who nobody likes. He did do a pretty good job organizing the evacuation, etc., when the hurricanes hit Galveston.
