The Commerce Department reported yesterday that the “American economy is contracting at its steepest pace in 50 years…but an unanticipated rise in consumer spending since January suggested to many economists that the worst of the recession might have passed.” Output fell at an 6.1 percent annual rate in the first quarter of this year after falling at a 6.3 percent rate in last year’s fourth quarter.
In an effort to rebrand the party, a group of Republican heavyweights “are launching a new group that will hold town halls around the country and look to produce GOP ideas on issues like education and health care.” The group, known as the National Council for a New America, will hold its first town hall session on Saturday in Northern Virginia, which will be attended by Jeb Bush and Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA).
Former Bush budget director Jim Nussle expressed a lack of confidence in Michael Steele’s leadership of the RNC. “I don’t think we’ve found that yet in Michael or anybody else yet for the party,” Nussle said. “So we’re going to have to struggle through that for a while.”
In an angry e-mail to the RNC treasurer Randy Pullen, RNC Chairman Michael Steele declared Pullen’s attempt to wrestle control over RNC spending to be “nothing short of a completely unprecedented usurpation of the authority of the RNC chairman.” He added, “No RNC chairman has ever had to deal with this, and I certainly have no intention of putting up with it either.”
Dawn Johnsen “is undoubtedly qualified for the position” of Office of Legal Counsel head, the Washington Post editorializes today, “and she should be confirmed.” “Johnsen’s pledge to make public as many OLC opinions as possible…is a welcome change from the previous administration and another reason to confirm” her, the Post concludes.
The New Hampshire state Senate yesterday approved a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, which now needs to be reconciled with the version that passed the state House. Gov. John Lynch (D) has “left it unclear whether he’s considering a veto.” In Maine, a key state legislature committee also approved a same-sex marriage bill, “setting the stage for the House and Senate to vote on it as soon as next week.”
“The Department of Homeland Security intends to step up enforcement efforts against employers who knowingly hire” undocumented workers. The department is issuing guidelines to to Immigration and Customs Enforcement field offices today, instructing agents to take aim at employers and supervisors for prosecution “through the use of carefully planned criminal investigations.”
British troops are ending their mission in Iraq, “beginning to withdraw from the southern city of Basra after a bloody and costly mission that was deeply unpopular at home.” “Today marks the closing chapter of the combat mission in Iraq,” Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, marking the occasion after meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in London.
Attorney General Eric Holder said yesterday that “he was ‘pleasantly surprised’ at the willingness of some European allies to resettle prisoners from Guantanamo Bay” and that the U.S. “was close to making formal requests for European countries to accept specific prisoners.”
And finally: Rep. Joe Baca (D-CA) was very excited about congressional business on Tuesday night: a resolution to give the Congressional Gold Medal to golf legend Arnold Palmer. “Walking…18 holes with him will forever be one of my greatest moments in life, besides, of course, marrying my wife and having my four children,” he said. He even added that the “Arnold Palmer” drink was “a good drink to get when you’re out on the golf course.” The resolution passed 422-1. Rep Ron Paul (R-TX) was the sole “no” vote, while Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) voted “present.”

The Congressional Medal of Honor for a golf guy the spent three years in the Coast Guard and was still able to hone his golf skills while doing so?
These retards need to pay attention to the reason these medals were made. The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest military awarded by the US government.
I have to wonder how this makes real military heroes feel, that a starstruck moron thinks the Congrssional Medal of Honor is meant for sports legends that allowed you to tag along for 18 holes.
There were over 400 retards that also ignored the meaning of this medal.
Maybe Cantor can get Britney Spears the Congressional Medal of Honor since she allowed this goofball to attend her concert during Obama’s speech.
April 30th, 2009 at 9:16 amIn an effort to rebrand the party, Republican heavyweights….
I love the smell of dead rotting elephants in the morning.
a resolution to give the Congressional Medal of Honor to golf legend Arnold Palmer
April 30th, 2009 at 9:22 amWTF?
I am not familiar with Palmer’s military record. If it is given for a past deed for heroism far above and beyond the call of duty under enemy fire, OK. But if he is receiving it because of his exploits on the greens swatting little white balls, it degrades and demeans the highest military award this country has to offer, and those who EARNED that medal.
Dawn Johnsen “is undoubtedly qualified for the position” of Office of Legal Counsel head, the Washington Post editorializes today…
The Right fears sunlight.
Ms. Johnsen will support release of additional OLC memos. That’s sunlight to the Republics. Too much light on their dirty little secrets will lead to further shrinking within their party. This could reach critical mass, and Republics could become a thing of the past. That would also indicate some of them would have to find REAL JOBS.
Can’t have that now, can we?
April 30th, 2009 at 9:22 ami think there’s already a National Council for a New America. It’s called the Obama Administration.

April 30th, 2009 at 9:27 amGiving Arnold Palmer the Congressional Medal of Honor is pathetic. It completely cheapens the meaning of it, even though it wouldn’t be the first time its given to someone undeserving..like half of the U.S. cavalry from Wounded Knee that slaughtered women and children. Give freakin Dick Winters the medal. His actions on D-day deserve it more than some pompous golf moron.
April 30th, 2009 at 9:30 amGiving the medal of honor to a golf legend demeans the medal itself. Was Arnold Palmer a hero in the military? Veterans organizations should be angry and insulted.
Bush demeaned the medal of freedom as well when he gave it to his fellow conspirators in war crimes.
April 30th, 2009 at 9:32 amThe group, known as the National Council for a New America, will hold its first town hall session on Saturday in Northern Virginia, which will be attended by Jeb Bush and Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA).

Too g*ddamned concerned with “a permanent Repuke majority” to ever effectively govern.

Thank you President Obama! We know the 21% screaming minority will never show you appreciation for this, much less admit that you saved us from another major Depression, but know that the rest of us know what you did and appreciate it more than you might know.
April 30th, 2009 at 9:34 amIt’s the Medal of Honor. Not the Congressional Medal of Honor. It takes an act of Congress to award the Medal. Now with that said, I hope they are confusing the Medal of Freedom with the Medal of Honor.
Nothing against Arnie but sinking a 65 foot put to win a tournament is nothing compared to saving a platoon under enemy fire.
April 30th, 2009 at 9:36 amMaybe it is only the ones in my own limited circle, but golfers I know are almost obsessed with the game, constantly talking about the minutiae of their latest chip shot – they give it way to much importance in their lives. Since new ideas don’t come easily (if at all) to Republicans, I offer the following idea to them for free:
Start stealing policies from the Democrats and claiming them as your own.
This would involve little change in ethics on your part, and might result in a couple of policies that work. Voters love that sort of thing–and vote-flipping can only get you so far.

April 30th, 2009 at 9:53 amRep. **********************************************************
The fact that this ridiculous measure passed 422-1 is, in my opinion, a very strong indicator that something is seriously rotten in the state of Washington, DC — or quite possibly, in the state of the United States. Why does a professional golfer deserve the highest military decoration that our government can bestow?? Okay, so he served for three years in the Coast Guard — but with all due respect, that’s not such a big deal! Lots of people in this country have done the same, or far more. There’s no indication that Palmer’s brief military career was particularly distinguished in any way — there are without a doubt thousands of people far more deserving of this honor than he. If they want to give him the Congressional Gold Medal, that’s fine — he apparently already has the Presidential Medal of Freedom — but the fact that both Democrat and Republican Congresscritters alike voted overwhelmingly in favor of this measure suggests that most if not all of them have forsaken all integrity and are simply surrendering to mindless conformity. Disgusting.

I guess Joe Baca’s constituents are all so well off, he can waste time on this nonsense. But that doesn’t excuse the other golf groupies in the House. 422 to 1? They haven’t learned anything since the Abramoff days.
April 30th, 2009 at 10:02 amhmmmm are you implying that not even a buck of obama’s stimulus plan “was ever spent”? or that spending isn’t necessarily effective unless it’s done in one fell swoop?
April 30th, 2009 at 10:03 amIf this counts as an “open thread,” then I shouldn’t catch any shit for inviting all of you to join my “bloggi-versary” celebration, I hope.

April 30th, 2009 at 10:06 amThus confirming that the end of the recession began before the Obama “stimulus” money was ever spent.
And in an “l” shaped recession, the recovery will be achingly slow. Your point seems to be that only the election of Obama is a factor in the recession’s end, since he was saying what he would do before taking office, and so restored people’s confidence.

About damn time. I’m far from a Lou Dobbs type but this is long overdue.
I’ve seen and been negatively affected by illegal aliens in the construction industry. (Don’t tell me that Americans don’t want to be carpenters, drywallers, bricklayers, roofers, etc.) However, I don’t blame the “ aliens” for trying to make a living. I sincerely believe they have been systematically used (by corporate interests) as a tool to drive down wages, and in many cases, break unions. (BTW- I’ve also seen a lot of serious worker abuses inflicted on the aliens…they have absolutely no recourse.)
Remember before 9-11 when Bush was all chummy with Fox? (He even talked a little “Mexican” to use his words.) No time for research, but at the time, it sounded to me like Bush was giving an open invitation to come on in. Amigo here we come.
Hiring an illegal alien is a crime. It’s about time it’s treated as one.

I doubt that insanity swept Congress to the point where they would vote to award a golfer (even a very GOOD golfer) an award for extreme military heroism.
April 30th, 2009 at 10:31 amIt is strictly about power and you are caught in the middle, justifying your participation based on feelings.
Like the feeling we should abide by the Geneva Conventions, because torture enables our enemies? If you’d bother to do more that squat and trot, you’d see there is much consternation and trepidation here, regarding Obama’s first days, which has little to do with “feelings.”
April 30th, 2009 at 10:31 amCFP:
First, it’s a ’some economists say’ article–pretty nearly worthless.
But more important, The financial system runs to a considerable extent on confidence. An expectation that things will improve, soon or less than soon, often sparks speculative activity.
April 30th, 2009 at 10:31 amRver wonder why a successful company’s stock often falls upon an announcement of earnings? The principle is ‘buy on the rumor, sell on the fact.”
In this case, it’s a reasonable supposition that consumers, feeling that Obama is doing the right thing and that we are not simply headed for the cliff with no brakes, decided, after months of cutting as close to the bone as they could, to spend some money.
Confidence is a powerful financial force–and Obama is tapping it, not just through the stimulus package, but through his serious, thoughtful, amnd intelligent public demeanor.
A Congressional Gold Medal is an award bestowed by the United States Congress and is, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. The decoration is awarded to an individual who performs an outstanding deed or act of service to the security, prosperity, and national interest of the United States. American citizenship is not a requirement.

Cunningham on Obama: “What we have here is this little boy who grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia, at the age of 6 to 10, rejected by his own father, rejected by his own mother, rejected by his stepfather, raised by his grandparents”
____________________________________________________________
I suspect the main point of this tirade was for Cunningham to paint President Obama as a “little boy”. His detractors just LOVE to do that. Yes, Obama was a child once, as we all were. But he’s a grown man now.
The second point Cunningham is trying to make is that Obama is somewhat dysfunctional, and is exaggerating the “rejection” Obama supposedly suffered as a child to somehow prove his point.
Thinking people know that 1) President Obama isn’t a “little boy”, and 2) he’s hardly dysfunctional – he’s actually one of the most “together” people around. This is just more desperate feces-flinging from the Repubs.
If the fanciful tale spun by Cunningham was actually true, it would make Obama even more worthy of admiration for his accomplishments.

“…but an unanticipated rise in consumer spending since January suggested to many economists that the worst of the recession might have passed”
But with 5+ million jobs lost since December 2007 alone, who is doing the spending, and on what?
“A sharp drop in fuel prices, economists said, helped to free up money for other spending.”
The drop in fuel prices was due to the drop in consumer demand, which was due to a) price increases in other areas and b) job losses and c) other financial issues like personal bankruptcy.
“Regular-grade gasoline prices have increased to more than $2 per gallon, rising slowly but steadily since the beginning of the year in conjunction with rising crude oil prices and refiner margins recovering from recent near-historic lows.” http://www.eia.doe.gov/steo
THEREFORE next month’s report on THIS month will probably show a reduction in this “unexpected increase in consumer spending”, and it will drop even further as energy costs go UP again as they always do in the summer.
Until the economy stops shedding jobs and starts creating them this recession won’t be over. And jobs are the last to recover.
If these unnamed economists think the worst of the recession might be over, based on the juvenile summation the Times provides—they are way off the mark, as they have been for the last 18 months.
Here are your economic news for the rest of the year:
April 30th, 2009 at 10:44 am“[Insert economic indicator here] rose/fell at a rate higher/lower than expected, suggesting to many economists that if they just keep trying, one of these days they will get something right.”
So shrapnel from a bunker buster that slowly kills an enemy combatant over the period of a week is ok? How does that not enable our enemies? Enemy combatants that see their fellow solders head explode from an American Sniper has no effect, but pouring water over someone face does?
OK? It shows our military ability, to our enemies. Torturing someone in secret allows the enemy to effectively propagandize the situation, by painting worst-case visions of inquistion-like horrors to impressionable young arab/muslims.

“This site is now dedicated to the task of selling Hussein as a man that can do no wrong…”
_____________________________________________________________
Did you not get the memo? Referring to President Obama as “Hussein” doesn’t have any effect anymore (not that it ever had much). You can’t paint Obama as the equivalent of Saddam Hussein — that won’t stick. You can’t paint Obama as a terrorist — that won’t stick. You can’t paint Obama as a Muslim — that won’t even stick anymore. All this does is just make you look like a fool.
It’s kind of on a par with referring to Gerald Ford as “Rudolph” in an attempt to conflate him with Rudolph Hess, the convicted Nazi. It’s just stupid.
On the other hand, perhaps you’re some kind of eccentric who’s enamored of middle names that don’t get enough use. In that case, I assume you will refer to George W. Bush as “Walker”, John McCain as “Sidney”, Nancy Pelosi as “Patricia”, Joe Biden as “Robinette”, Rush Limbaugh as “Hudson”, Dick Cheney as “Bruce”, Hillary Clinton as “Diane”, Chief Justice John Roberts as “Glover”, Ann Coulter as “Hart”, Harry Reid as “Mason”, and Michelle Obama as “LaVaughn”. Try to keep them all straight, will you?
April 30th, 2009 at 11:11 amsmacking a ball around and walking after it? What a concept…

Muslim Dad: I am behind you all the way son. These people are savages and should be stopped and if you have to die than so be it. Also, if someone tries to convince you that this whole mess was started by Al Qaeda do not believe them. Its all propaganda Bin Laden was right for doing what he did.

This is SOOOOOOOO painfully silly. You just make up fantasy nonsense off the top of your head and it magically becomes “meaningful commentary”.
You’re a fraud… a bitter, angry person who just cannot accept the beating the GOP rightfully took in November.
April 30th, 2009 at 11:12 amObama aide: We won’t press for peace at all costs
The United States does not plan to pressure Israel for peace at all costs, US President Barack Obama has conveyed in a message to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s citizens.
This message was relayed Wednesday night by Larry Summers, the American president’s chief economic advisor, during an event marking the Jewish state’s 61st Independence Day organized by the Israeli Embassy in Washington.
Summers who is Jewish….

April 30th, 2009 at 11:32 amThe Department of Homeland Security intends to step up enforcement efforts against employers who knowingly hire” undocumented workers.
Wow, its about time they started putting the blame for our undocumented worker problem where it really lies. If there were not jobs waiting here for these people, they would not cross the border, at their own peril, to find those jobs.

Too bad the GOPigs only respond to hillbilly catch phrases:
“How do you respond to the criticism that you waited to long to respond to the terror attack the morning of 9/11?”
(moment of dumfounded silence while staring into the oblivion)
