Bybee refuses to respond to Leahy’s testimony invitation.

impeachbybee.jpgOn Wednesday, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) sent a letter to Judge Jay Bybee inviting him to testify about his “views” about torture and his “role” in drafting the torture memos. In the letter, Leahy wrote, “I look forward to your cooperation and your testimony.” But the Los Angeles Times reports today that Bybee has “declined to respond” to Leahy’s letter. Bybee’s law clerks initially gave contradictory messages about how the judge would respond, but law clerk Keith Woffinden tried to clean up the confusion, telling the paper, “my impression is that there won’t be any further statements” beyond Bybee’s comments to the New York Times.

Please join our campaign calling on Congress to begin impeachment hearings against Jay Bybee.

    Dear redstate,
Impeachment comes from the House of Representatives…
… The Senate tries the case.

    Bye-bye, Bybee…

  16. Zimzone says:

Sen. Leahy, letters aren’t working so well.

Perhaps a frog march in an orange jumpsuit would suit Mr. Bybee?

  17. Perry logan says:

The Madame of the House took accountability “OFF THE TABLE.”

    Oh yea.

Why waste time getting mad at the other guys when we can get mad at ourselves?

  19. AlphaLiberal says:

    Bybee is running and hiding.

  20. MapleStreet says:

“Invite” is such an ugly word.

While if I were “invited” to Congress I would assume it to be a command performance, apparently that doesn’t hold for Bybee’s understanding of diplomatic language.

Now is Congress going to grow a spine and learn how to demand appearance and be willing to ramp it up to contempt ?

  21. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    .

Who thought members of the “alleged” Bush Administration would respond to “sternly worded” letters from the 111th Congress, when they didn’t respond too kindly to similar letters issued by the 109th and 110th?

And who thought Congress learned a damned thing?

    “Same as it ever was…”

  23. konchster says:

You can expect Bybee to answer that summons about the same time “The mighty chickenhawk manatee” shows up for his waterboarding

  24. spencers butterfly mom says:

Is it too early to send disgraced Judge Bybee a soap on a rope?

What a coward! Write (il)legal justification to torture other but too damn scared to come and answer some tough questions himself.

    PEACE

  25. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Gee, what a surprise… a Republican not being forthcoming and honest. After eight years of Republican arrogance and bullying it is time for the Democrats to get tough with these cowardly bullies. Republicans, like creeps and criminals all over the world, understand only one thing: overwhelming force, served righteously in a timely manner.

  26. Hoodathunktick says:

Mr. Leahy, I think it is time the ‘invitation’ was delivered by a US Marshal. You asked nice, good for you. Now tell him to drag his sorry butt in or go to jail.

  27. curious says:

The only way this A-hole is going to show up, even with a summons is, if he is given immunity.

He talks about his torture memo as a mistake. Like a traffic ticket, or a faux paux during dinner. Like, gosh how did I know Bush would take it seriously and really torture someone.

Bush, a man who made fun of someone who was going to be put to death when he was the governor of Texas. “Don’t kill me, don’t kill me.” When I saw that interview it made me sick. That’s when I knew what kind of man Bush was. And this memo is how we all know what kind of man Bybee is. If he didn’t have to see it, or do it, then he was just a simple error and not real.

  28. kdgamergirl says:

He has the balls to authorize the henious maltreatment of detainees but can’t face a commitee? Methinks someone’s scared…

  29. Hoodathunktick says:

If a judge is served a subpoena and ignores it, why would he be considered a judge? If he issued one I am sure he would take offense if the recipient ignored it.

  30. rightwing-leftwing says:

    DUUUUUUU! Ya think?

Why don’t we invite the following as well:
Terrorists of the world: turn yourselves in to the USA.
Aliens: please land and make yourselves known
    Yeti: show yourself.
    Loch Ness Monster: show yourself
    Flush Limpdick: stop talking

    ..

  31. freeman says:

Big suprise , now we will finally get a strongly worded letter ! / Snark off
The law has been RENDERED useless .

  32. kasinca says:

If he is sure of his legal opinions and actions, why would he not want to come before Congress and straighten this out?

  33. ElBruce says:

    Hoodathunktick Says:

If a judge is served a subpoena and ignores it, why would he be considered a judge?

It would just be a Congressional subpoena from a Dem. It’s not like it’s a real one or anything.

    /snark

I think this Congress needs to issue a letter of apology to everybody brought to Capitol Hill for the Army/McCarthy trials. Perhaps if they’d realized back then that you don’t actually have to respond to subpoenas, a lot of lives might not have been utterly ruined.

  34. Rodeskawler says:

This poor guy just made a silly mistake. You know, the one where you claim internationally recognized crimes are legal, and because you declare them legal, you tell others that you think they really are.

Anyone could make a silly mistake like this. I think the Germans did in the 1930’s and 40’s.

  35. 5150 says:

6 of the 9 Supremes were Republican appointees for Gore v. Bush. Haters relentlessly excoriated the Warren court for it’s civil rights work and as a result, the Federal Judiciary is stacked with hardcore hardliner right wing cranks like Jay Bybee the torturer.

  37. sacopenapa says:

Like every WAR CRIMINAL in History, Bybee is also a COWARD.
