Associate Supreme Court Justice David Souter “plans to retire at the end of the term in June, giving President Obama his first appointment to the Supreme Court.” The generally liberal Souter has “grown increasingly sour on Washington and intends to return to his home state, New Hampshire.” President Clinton was the last Democrat to name a justice to the Court.
Yesterday, detainee Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide material support to Al Qaeda, after having denied the charges for the six years he was held in isolation in a naval brig off of South Carolina. His plea “reflects what we can achieve when we have faith in our criminal justice system,” Attorney General Eric Holder said.
President Obama blamed “a small group of speculators” for forcing Chrysler into bankruptcy. “A group of investment firms and hedge funds decided to hold out for the prospect of an unjustified taxpayer-funded bailout,” Obama said yesterday.
SEIU has “asked CNN and Fox News to pull a health care commercial by the group Conservatives for Patients’ Rights, describing it as ‘unfit to air.’” The union argued that “the ad should be pulled for overstating the power of a newly established federal board on comparative effectiveness research and misrepresenting the views of the two featured physicians.” FactCheck.org said that the ad was “misleading.”
“The number of terrorist attacks around the world fell by 18 percent last year but rose dramatically in Pakistan, growing in frequency and lethality,” according to a new State Department report on terrorism worldwide. Terror attacks also rose in Afghanistan while falling sharply in Iraq. Additionally, the number of suicide bombings declined worldwide, despite the increases in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
In a new report, the United Nations “is calling on Israel to freeze all pending demolition orders against Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem,” a move that reflects “growing international concern over developments in the contested city.” Israelis demolish Palestinian-owned structures claiming they lack permit, while Palestinians “say Israel limits construction to push them out of East Jerusalem.”
The Obama administration “is determined to continue withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq on schedule, despite a surge of violence in two Iraqi cities that shows no signs of abating.” ”We are not even talking about” changing the withdrawal plan, an administration official said. “[T]here’s little more that the United States can do to help the Iraqis end their political, ethnic and sectarian feuds.”
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told Democratic senators the Obama administration would not be requesting more bank bailout funds any time soon. “I asked him if they’d need more TARP funding and he said ‘No time soon,’” said Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND).
Yesterday, the House passed legislation “putting new reins on the credit card industry,” which would prohibit “double-cycle billing and retroactive rate hikes and would prevent companies from giving credit cards to anyone under 18.” The Senate is expected to consider the bill “as early as next week.”
And finally: Queens can’t just walk into the White House. Yesterday, Queen Noor of Jordan waited outside the White House’s northwest gate to get clearance from Secret Service to enter. “The queen — who presented a Jordanian passport to the Secret Service — stood before the guard gate for several minutes spelling her name for the agents. ‘It could be under Queen Noor,’ she told the agent, spelling ‘N-O-O-R.’”

I have 2 suggestions for Justice Souter’s seat – Bill and Hillary Clinton. Bill is a little too “centrist” for me. We have had enough of those guys. So I would have to settle on Hill if she wants it. We need strong unbending Liberal voices on the bench.
Here’s a link to oral args. in SCOTUS #08322 Northwest Municipal District v. Holder (Voting Rights)
The full stream is recommended because all of the Justices and Attorneys put up a great performance, but the specific segment I think would affect the outcome is the exchange b/w Justice Scalia and NAACP Attorney – Debo Adegbuile, Esq. Smart and very aware.

Frankly, I will be pleased if Obama doesn’t appoint some damned neocon to the Supreme Court.
May 1st, 2009 at 9:08 amPresident Obama blamed “a small group of speculators” for forcing Chrysler into bankruptcy. “A group of investment firms and hedge funds decided to hold out for the prospect of an unjustified taxpayer-funded bailout,” Obama said yesterday.
Remember the vice grip consumers were in last year with gas prices? Blame the speculators, regulate the speculators. Congress was talking a good game about doing so, but balked.
It would be nice to know the names of these holdouts. They are among the biggest wards of the state we’ve ever seen. Welfare mom who?
May 1st, 2009 at 9:09 amRequest for Souter: Please wait until Franken is seated as Senator before saying goodbye. President Obama will need all the votes he can get to deal with the GOP obstruction machine when he appoints your replacement.
Furthermore, we may need your input on the Coleman/Franken matter if it reaches the SCOTUS.
May 1st, 2009 at 9:12 amI like David Souter. He’s pulled 12hr/7 day workloads for the people. Didn’t like his majority vote for Exxon-Valdez ruling, but I’m thankful to him for sticking it out post-Florida dispute so that Georgie couldn’t have at it with Justice Floater #3.
May 1st, 2009 at 9:15 amAll the news says, “It’s a good day for America and keeps getting better.” The battleship IS turning!
Yea!

Um…since facts have a liberal bias, conservatives have to leave them out of their message. This leaves them only hyperbole, conjecture, fanciful tale-spinning, and baseless fearmongering. Having their ads branded as “misleading” or “overstating” is hardly going to stop them.
May 1st, 2009 at 9:19 amWhat I don’t understand is why this TARP program was devised by Paulson in the first place when the Federal Reserve was already dishing out billions.

What? And limit the ability of the Israeli’s to grab and confiscate more Palestinian homes, date and palm groves?
May 1st, 2009 at 9:26 amHow unfair!
The long-drawn-out seating of Al Franken may need the assistance of the SCOTUS before it is over.
May 1st, 2009 at 9:31 amI hope Obama chooses someone clearly liberal – we need to balance the far right wing opinions of Thomas, Alito, Roberts and Scalia. The middle is already represented.
It’s too bad the SCOTUS has to be so political, but when repugs install ideologues, the bench is out of balance.

May 1st, 2009 at 9:32 amHopefully, since the Republicans have shown themselves so unwilling to work with the Obama administration and have voted in complete lock-step against everything he’s tried to do, we can quickly silence the meme which will soon emerge that Obama should appoint a conservative in order to be ‘bipartisan’.

Speculators & Hedge Funds have crippled & perhaps bankrupted the USA. Bad economic news makes them drool, knowing vulnerable or weakened businesses can make them tons of money in several nefarious ways.
America needs to reinstate clear regulation on these fiscal predators. They took billions in our hard earned wages. They’re doing it again in the realty & financial sectors.
They’re essentially sociopathic vampires, sucking the life blood out of our economy into there coffers while sticking their hand out for more profit.
Do we have laws against financial rape?

It’s ironic, coming after the criminal enterprising vice president, that you trolls focus on every triviality of Joe Biden when he isn’t using his office to enrich his coffers. He’s a fair playing behind-the-scenes vice president.
May 1st, 2009 at 9:42 amTell Congress you won’t trade your doctor for a national board of bureaucrats. Let’s put patients first.
Well, I’ll trade my ultra-high premium no-care insurance policy that sucks $120/month out of my check to maintain my paperwork and take care of their overhead while not providing benefits until I hit $1,500 in medical costs for a sensible and affordable alternative.
I’d wager people would trade emergency room health care for an opportunity to buy into Medicare as well.

I’m surprised the Secret Service didn’t recognize the queen. I would think they’d be up on things like heads of state, former heads of state, royalty, etc. Of course, Queen Noor would never throw a hissy fit about being treated like an anonymous tourist — instead she was a good sport and remarked how she was “glad they were thorough”.
Fortunately, the WH aides who came to rescue her recognized her.

Huh? Am I supposed to recognize this as humor? Why would President Obama name his own veep to the bench? Why would Obama name somebody with no judicial experience at all to the SCOTUS? That’s more Dubya’s style.
All I see here is an unprovoked Biden bash that completely lacks any context. Biden’s doing just fine where he is, and you haven’t explained why you think he isn’t (except for some vague sarcastic but meaningless comment about his “knowledge”).
I know you’re trying to drop a troll turd in the thread, but this one didn’t even smell.
May 1st, 2009 at 9:54 amHow about this little gem from Sen. Dick Durbin…
‘Banks own the Senate’
That will become apparent as the Senate deals with the credit card bill. Retroactive interest increases? NO PROBLEM!
Double billing cycles? NO PROBLEM!
Remember, WE OWN the Senate. Let your Senator’s know you support credit card reform. If we outnumber the Banksters with our calls & e-mails, they just may listen.

Doocy claims that “Obama would really have to appoint an outright Socialist for him to find somebody more to the left of Justice Souter” — Dr. Hussein Matt
***************************************************
It appears that they’ve forgotten who appointed Souter in the first place. That’s right — not Bill Clinton, but George Herbert Walker Bush. One of their own. No wonder they’re glad to see him go — the joke’s been on them for nearly twenty years. (Ye gods…can you imagine what this country might have been like if Poppy Bush had actually gotten his wish and Souter had proven himself to be a conservative along the lines of Clarence Thomas? Br-r-r-r-r…simply thinking about it gives me cold shudders.)
But really…”goat-f**king child molester????” For pity’s sake…

I noticed this as well. The famed librul media has been itching for a gaff from the VP. He’s been kinda quiet as of late so I guess this was just an opportunity to validify the MSM’s constant assertion of Biden’s “big mouth”. It’s a non-story but that won’t stop the tighty righty types who love to ramble on about teleprompters and other nonsense.

Yesterday, the House passed legislation “putting new reins on the credit card industry…
Which is like saying you have to use your right hand when stabbing people to death. Here’s the real problem with credit cards (other than the high variable interest rates): in no other industry can they charge you a fee, and then automatically put that fee into the service (by adding it to the credit balance). Sure, other industries charge fees, but those aren’t subject to interest, or to bumping a balance which is limited (and in which going over the limit results in a fee). They should carry two totals for each account. 1) your balance, and 2) any fees and interest due. And the second total should not incur fees or interest.

May 1st, 2009 at 10:14 amExcellent parody Briseadh na Firefly! I fear that there is much more truth in your post than I care to admit though. The Party of No Ideas will most definitely block ANY person that Preisdent Obama nominates in their hackneyed attempt to bring Government to a halt in order to fulfill their promise to the American people that Government cannot work. The Right has three solid far-right idealogues on the bench. One of which (Scalia) seems to love him some torture due to his hard-on for Jack Bauer and his never ending admiration for his hunting buddy Dick Cheney. If and when the Bush Administration appeals their convictions to the Supreme Court, Justice Scalia will need to be recused due to his relationship with the former VP. The Nation deserves a Supreme Court that reflects the political atitude of the Country which has, over the last decade, moved markedly to the Left.
May 1st, 2009 at 10:19 amIf I may on the Joe Biden “gaffe”, our Vice President was making a personal statement, not a recommendation for the country.
Now, I do consider myself somewhat educated on the matter in the fact that two years ago I took a class on “super infections” and last October I got trained and licensed in immunization. Therefore, what he said is true. This particular strain of virus is “airborne”, which means the only way to get infected is to have those damn droplets of moist air expelled from a host inhaled into your lungs. Not a big concern in an open area, but a major problem if confined to limited space. Guess what, not only are airplanes confined, but they RECIRCULATE the processed air. So, when one sneezes, the droplets get expelled into the air, filtered and recirculated. And the passengers are inhaling it.
Perfect examples of this is the norovirus outbreak on cruise ships, and meningal coccal for college students. Both are in a limited area, a confined space.
Now it’s a personal preference whether to fly, cruise, or attend college, but again, the VP was giving his personal belief, not a mandatory act.
That said, with our “jet age” comes consequences. We WILL have a SUPER FLU. It is inevitable. But for now, precautions are the best prescription.
Good hygiene (sanitizers are okay, but are limited to mostly bacteria. Hand soap and thorough washing of hands for 15-45 seconds is best)
Wiping down a often used area by the public (a perfect example are those annoying trays behind airplane seats, which are rarely, if ever cleaned)
Avoid contact (if possible) with a recently ill individuals.
STAY HOME if flu symptoms arise!
Pandemic does not mean PANIC, it means to be cautious.

Yea, since the reich-wing wants to paint goverment as THE problem (all the while trying to control it – i’ve never fully understood that hypocrisy), and seem to have no faith in our justice system, why don’t they all just pull a Rick Perry and leave? Their clear anti-American sentiment is unsettling.
