On Friday, the White House website replaced its commitment to “repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” with a commitment to simply “changing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in a sensible way.” John Aravosis said that the change appeared to be “a backward step from a clear campaign promise” and looked to be the latest in increasingly vague promises from the Obama administration on its plans regarding DADT. But as Pro Publica notes, the White House has now “reinserted language saying President Obama supports the ‘repeal’ of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. The new phrasing: ‘He supports repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in a sensible way that strengthens our armed forces and national security.’”
I’m just going to go out on a limb here and suggest folks are a little bit nuts to be reading so much into changes on the WH website. Seriously folks, this is crazy.
May 3rd, 2009 at 10:51 amPresident Obama received a letter opposing repeal. It was signed by over 1,000 retired military leaders. They claimed repeal would damage the armed forced.
The language change came after Obama got the letter. Politicians language is worth watching, especially this super vetted White House.
May 3rd, 2009 at 10:55 amWhen it comes to politicians, it’s much more useful to watch what they do, not what they say.
May 3rd, 2009 at 10:57 amhappy slow sunday…
orin hatch thinks “empathy” is code for “activist judge”…
that surely explains a LOT, doesn’t it…
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:04 amHi Katy, are you watching “This Week”, and if so, did you hear Leahy state emphatically that there will be no filibuster on Obama’s SCOTUS nominee? It jumped out at me as his warning that the GNOPers better watch their step on this issue.
Hatch makes my skin crawl… his face said “Botox” long before Botox was ever used.

May 3rd, 2009 at 11:11 amgood to hear… now we wait’n’see…
Is the gays are a threat to the greatest military in the history of the world the same bs never defined threat that they pose to heterosexual marraige. Damn these gays are some serious mofos what with their superhuman abilities and all…
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:11 amDon’t these military “leaders” realize that gays and lesbians have been serving in their midst since the beginning of time? They have certainly died for our freedoms and no one was concerned about their sexual preferences at that time. I have a feeling that many have won medals for heroism as well, but can’t allow others to know their orientation. Had it not been for this economic meltdown, the military would be ‘begging’ for recruits and I hardly think that orientation would be their primary sticking point.
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:14 amHey…I’m all for repealing “Don’t ask…Don’t tell.”
…and when it happens…we go back to where it was before…no queers in the military!
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:15 amThis DADT stuff is silly. I view it as a bunch of xenophobes reacting to the “boogie man.” I’m sure there are other views on this but, this is mine as of today. I’ve known gay men and they’re just like you-and-me. These people need to get out more and stop watching FAUX Noise and listening Flush Limpdick. A gay can kill a terrorist just as well as a straight – nuf said.
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:15 amdbadass, apparently the GNOP and our military are admitting that teh gays are the single most powerful force in the nation. They can destroy the military, traditional marriage and convert our children, all without actually doing anything more than lead their lives and go about their daily business! I had no idea… maybe we should put them in charge.
PEACE
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:17 amHi RealityCheck:
I had a fine meal sans crow. What shit will you be eating this day?
What is a queer?
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:17 amI’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that if you think the Web site of the President of the United States of America is written by some kid who sloppily and mistakenly changes the wording on a major, and highly controversial, commitment by the President of the United States, without senior level staffers approving of the language change, you are naive.
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:18 amAravosis, nice straw man.
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:22 amwe go back to where it was before…no queers in the military!
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:23 am—
If queers is old school talk for gays than this fantasy time never existed. I doubt my little buddy will have sufficient nerve to show any evidence to support this contention though…

After destroying all 4 of my marriages and claiming my daughter, all the gays have left on their “to do” list is to destroy the military.
Snark/off :)~
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:23 am“this” should have been “his”
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:24 amI neglected to mention that what i quoted at #17 was by Spencer’s Mom. Sorry Mom ;)
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:25 amTop Gun and Spartacus are about the “gayest” movies I have ever seen…
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:26 am“Hatch makes my skin crawl… his face said “Botox” long before Botox was ever used.”
Spencer’s Mom, ever since the first time I saw Hatch, I’ve felt that he looked like a small boy dressed up for Sunday church. And that was maybe 20 years ago! Yuch!
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:29 amHi Jane! Maybe that’s more of a Utah in general look, or perhaps a Mormon look. I see what you’re saying, and I could put Romney into that same “dress up shorts, knee socks and saddle shoes” little boy outfit. But ewww!
Are you having a rainy day today, too? At least the flowers will keep growing. Enjoy!
PEACE
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:33 amfear of the ‘queer’ must be what kept RC out of the military…
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:36 amHi, spencers mom, it’s just overcast now but expecting rain the next few days. The flowers are growing but the weeds are outpacing them. :( BTW, I’m off tomorrow and Tuesday, so I’ll be in and out here.

May 3rd, 2009 at 11:42 amAll it takes is one stroke of his pen as Commander in Chief. I’d chalk it up as just another campaign promise that he does not intend to keep.
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:43 am—
I think you are wrong. I think pens can only be stroked after consideration of complex pressures and implications. Your thinking strikes me as super simplistic. It would be nice if the world was so simplistic but I am afraid it may not be.
Rightwingnuts are afraid of gays in the military, someones sexual orientation is none of their freakin business. The same goes for woman who choose to get an abortion, its none of anyones business.
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:44 amJane, wh- wh- wha- what? Are you telling me those things growing are not flowers?
Actually, I have to thank Spencer for our bumper crop of dandelions this year… I don’t think he passed a single one that had gone to seed that he didn’t blow into the wind!
Enjoy your time off and “hi” to Wayne!

Have you seen what he has on his plate? Maybe he’s waiting to catch his breath first…
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:49 amAla Bush’s nation building? This will get done I trust. See the thing is that the demographics show that the thinking youth don’t give a damn about the gay. Those that are uptight about it are on their way out which is fine by me. Societies evolve which is why stuff like that “god damned piece of paper” are living documents…

Secretary Gates is on Fareed Zakaria right now, I think for the full hour. He may address this issue. He has previous stated that it is not a priority at this time.

May 3rd, 2009 at 1:13 pmThis is hilarious. I have reduced you to way beyond stupid.
So I suppose it would be a real loser whose ass gets endlessly kicked by what you claim to be a “queer”? Now seems about the time I should start talking smack about your mother….
May 3rd, 2009 at 1:14 pmJohn at Americablog is a great blogger whom I admire, but he is particularly sensitive to these issues and at times he can be a little excitable. Like ComradeJake, I think too much is being made of the WH website phrasing – but apparently, the WH staff realized they needed more clarity so they rephrased the statement.
May 3rd, 2009 at 1:45 pmLet the poofters have anything they want! THen after they win their victoriese, they’ll realize how meaningless and pathetic their lives are and everyone can just not have to hear about the gay agenda anymore!
If you want to bump clams, go ahead, if you want to be a pillowbiter, go ahead.
Just leave children alone and move on with your lives
I wonder whats next if they actually won? Their lives would be empty and would have to find a new cause to fill the void.
Even if the USA gave these people everything they want on the gay issue. Its not like theyd go away, they’d have to find a new cause, a new thing to b*tch about.
May 3rd, 2009 at 3:03 pmWhy? B/c they are just annoying people and their gay lol
I was in the last meeting with gay and lesbian people with Pres Clinton in the White House. And no, it was not a meeting with queers for you neanderthals who have posted such already. This question was raised to him because he gave us this lovely, backwards bill.
Clinton said when he came into office he thought he could just change the policy with his signature. He learned he couldn’t as Richard Socarides has posted in his opinion piece in yesterday’s WaPo.
The example he cited which he should have followed was Eisenhower’s integration of the armed forces. It was a gradual movement, not one that came overnight as he tried to do.
Hopefully Obama will learn from both a successful and not so successful ventures to bring equality through the WH.
May 3rd, 2009 at 3:05 pmIf you are against gays in the military then we must assume that if you were in the military and you and another soldier were patrolling the streets in Iraq, and you get hit by an IED what would you choose to do. Lets say that the soldier next to you is gay and he needs to give you mouth to mouth for you to survive so you live another day to see your loved ones. By your ignorant logic would choose to die or let the homosexual save your life?

You keep bringing up my mother…so I guess that shows what kind of lowlife you really are dstankass. As for getting my butt kicked by a queer…well I guess all those closet queers I was able to help process out of the service while I was active duty…speaks for itself! One of the more enjoyable aspects of a job well done!

May 4th, 2009 at 11:29 amI am a proud gay man and I have to say “get over it.” There is so much President Obama has to fix from the last eight years of the Bush Administration that this is very far down on my list of priorities.
Yes, some day I would like it if gays and lesbians could serve in the military openly rather than in hiding as they do now. For now, I’ll be happy if the President can just bring honor back to our country.
