With the switch of Sen. Arlen Specter (PA) to the Democratic party, the top GOP slot on the Judiciary Committee opened up. The Hill reports that Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has secured the spot:
Under terms of the deal, Sessions will serve as ranking member until the 112th Congress, when he will take over the ranking member post on the Senate Budget Committee. Current Budget Committee ranking member Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) is retiring at the end of the 111th Congress.
Grassley, the top Republican on the Finance Committee, will then become ranking member on the Judiciary Committee.
The Hill reports that the move is “likely to please conservative organizations around Washington,” who view Sessions as “the better spokesman, and more likely to lead the Republican charge in questioning the nominee.” In 2005, Sessions spoke out against the use of the filibuster to block President Bush’s Supreme Court nominees — will he do the same for President Obama?

Gee, I think I can answer this one already.

Who cares…the liberals already have enough votes to approve their new Murderous Judge…who will keep alive a vile procedure that even the person who first brought it to court…has spoken out publicly against it!
When the book of life is read for each one of you…you will have to answer for murder. It might be safety in numbers on this board…but it’s only going to be you facing God in the end.

You should probably go post that on a right-wing site, since GOP are the ones who never actually made any attempt to overturn Roe vs Wade despite having complete control of the government just a few years ago.
May 4th, 2009 at 11:58 amThe Party of “No” is becoming the Party of “throwing themselves on the floor and screaming until they get what they want”
May 4th, 2009 at 11:58 amSure, Sessions will approve of filibustering Obama’s choices for the Supreme Court. He is a Republican and Republicans are the party of “No” and “Obstruction”. Republicans will never put Americans and our nation before their party and corporate interests. If they did that, then they would no longer be Republicans.
May 4th, 2009 at 12:03 pmSTFU RealityCheck. You’re not going to convert anyone here. Unlike you, we came to our opinions based on facts and evidence, not on paranoid emotional desire. Shoo now. You’re wasting your time here.

I can’t wait to see the look on Reality’s face when he faces Jesus at Judgment Day, and Jesus tells him, right to his face:

May 4th, 2009 at 12:07 pmSo the woman who originally brought the case to court now has spoken out against it. That’s her right, of course.
We have not changed our minds–our right, of course.
May 4th, 2009 at 12:07 pm“In 2005, many Republican Senators went so far as to claim the filibuster of judicial nominees was unconstitutional. Now four years later, with President Obama’s first Supreme Court appointment looming, will they remain consistent in their position or commit one of the most blatant acts of hypocrisy in the 220-year history of the United States Senate?”
And if the Republicons do it, it is NOT UNCONSTITUTIONAL OR ILLEGAL!

Answers a LOT of easy questions.
It’s O-Kay If You’re A Republican.
It worked for eight long years (and then some). It continues to this day. It will continue until, in the not-too-distant future, the Republican Party ceases to exist.
Then we can write it on their tombstone.

May 4th, 2009 at 12:14 pmLet’s see: death penalty, war, torture, against universal health care, against hate crime legislation, elimination of welfare programs, etc. I do believe these are core Republican values. Need I go on?
On “This Week” Patrick Leahy made it quite clear that there will be no filibuster of President Obama’s SCOTUS nominee. Orrin Hatch didn’t respond directly, but it was clearly a shot across the bow.

The GNOP had no intention of overturning Roe v. Wade because they care more about having a wedge issue to gin up their voting base than they do about clusters of cells.
Americans have moved beyond abortion and gay rights as their main priorities, but don’t count on the GNOPasaurus to follow any time soon.

May 4th, 2009 at 12:21 pmJeff Sessions-the name should send shutters thru the bodies of all progressives. This man has a grudge to settle and the Repubs are sending a rabid dog into the Supreme Court battle over Souter’s retirement. Oh what evil lurks in the hearts of the zealots and reactionaries of our once great country. Be afraid!!1 Be very afraid, pilgrims!!!

May 4th, 2009 at 12:47 pmThe Republican Party, after spending six years avoiding the mere mention of Roe v. Wade is now poised to wield the old wedge once again. I shouldn’t be surprised to see the Party of No Ideas allready vocal and up in arms over a nominee that has yet to be named. They have allready condemmed whoever it might be and have begun their obstruction based solely on the presumption of that candidate being pro-choice. God forbid that a Justice on the Supreme Court might advocate supporting the law. Well guess what regressives, ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES! One of those being that the current President gets to nominate Supreme Court replacements. Sessions is a Cheney humper extraordinaire. The man voted against the 2005 that restricted the use of harsh interrogations. He has voted against civil rights throughout his career, was a strong proponent for the Iraq War and was one of the GOP’s most vocal supporters of the “nuclear option”. I say the Dems should use this option and re-name it the Sessions Option. Keeping the Republicans out of legislative actions would be doing a great service to the American public as the republican Party as it is today has nothing to offer America but obstruction to progress. Let them collect their paychecks and enjoy their free healthcare but do not involve them in legislation. Surely the trolls would agree that turnabout is fair play, no?

Did you seriously just ask that? Based on the GOP’s track record, I think we already know the answer to that question!
May 4th, 2009 at 3:08 pmThis bozo Sessions should be bumped……..he’s a racist pig. Excerpts from the comments on Ben Smith’s blog: Former assistant US Attorny said, Sessions “had called him “boy” and, after overhearing him chastise a secretary, warned him to “be careful what you say to white folks.” Sessions in a BLATENT RACIST! This guy makes Trent Lott seem like a Civil Rights Activist. Google him……….I rest my case.

Spencers mom, you’re exactly right. They had the power to do it for 6 years.
May 5th, 2009 at 12:55 amIf there was ever someone who needs to be censured, it would be this guy. Had this idiot made those slanderous and racist remrks as a Democrat, he’d never see the backside of any political office, let alone a senate seat. Yet look at the state he represents, the home state of George Wallace where a racist can get elected into any political office.
