A report by Al Jazeera English shows soldiers in Afghanistan passing around Bibles in Pashto and Dari, the languages of Afghanistan, presumably to be distributed. The chaplain leading the discussion acknowledges that “proselytizing” is against military rules, but one soldier says, “you can give gifts“:
But in another piece of footage taken by Hughes, the chaplains appear to have found a way around the regulation known as General Order Number One.
“Do we know what it means to proselytise?” Captain Emmit Furner, a military chaplain, says to the gathering.
“It is General Order Number One,” an unidentified soldier replies.
But [Sergeant Jon] Watt says “you can’t proselytise but you can give gifts“.
A military spokeswoman said the Bibles “were never distributed as far as we know.” The Al Jazeera report also shows Lt. Col. Gary Hensley, the chief of the US military chaplains in Afghanistan, telling a congregation of U.S. servicemembers that their job as Christian is to “hunt people for Jesus.” “That’s what we do, that’s our business,” he said. Watch it:
Jeff Sharlet’s piece in this month’s Harpers, not yet on line, is chilling:

May 4th, 2009 at 8:43 pmHere’s your free Bible. Now watch us kill for Jesus. This is getting sick.

May 4th, 2009 at 8:47 pmHensley, Hensley, Hensley! For shame Gary Hensley!
May 4th, 2009 at 8:48 pmI don’t care how strong or what these troops’ religion is. The taxpayers of the United States, of many faiths and of no faith, are decidedly NOT paying these troops to give evangelical Christian religious gifts, thereby skirting General Order Number One. Are these troops still this tone-deaf and insensitive to how Christian invaders are perceived in Muslim countries that have bitter memories of the Crusades? And talk about no separation of church and state (which is paying them!). President Obama, as Commander-in-Chief, you need to put a stop to this at best dubious, at worst illegal practice.
May 4th, 2009 at 8:48 pmDon’t you go dragging God into your dirty war Hensley!
May 4th, 2009 at 8:48 pmThe military officers corps, FBI and CIA are dominated by conservative Christians such as Southern Baptists, charismatics, Mormons and right-wing Catholics. It’s certainly interesting that these people claim to be followers of the Prince of Peace–and no one reading the Gospels can reasonably conclude that he was anything other than a pacifist–and make their livings killing, maiming, torturing and abusing people.
Their Christianity has as much to do with Jesus as the Navigator does with Abraham Lincoln.
May 4th, 2009 at 8:49 pmWhat idiot thought this up? Al Qaeda and the insurgents at first were calling the GI’s crusaders, this just gives them a PR bonanza. Now they can say, “See, we told you, rally to Allah!”
May 4th, 2009 at 8:49 pmDid you watch the video neo? It was taken over a year ago. I would say Bush led.
May 4th, 2009 at 8:50 pmCaptain Emmit Furner and Sergeant Jon Watt should be court matialed immediately and taken out of the field. Can anyone say “Crusades”?
May 4th, 2009 at 8:52 pmThe military has a serious problem with discipline.
May 4th, 2009 at 8:53 pmYes, but he military has a more serious problem with infiltration of conspirators.
May 4th, 2009 at 8:55 pmApe-man, could you elaborate on that? If you’re referring to such phenomenon as the evangelicals taking over the Air Force Academy, I agree it’s a problem, but will insist that it is a disciplinary problem.
May 4th, 2009 at 8:58 pmYes, this time it’s evangelicals i guess. It’s always a matter of executing the law.
If you call that a disciplinary problem ok, but it runs to the very top of the previous government.
May 4th, 2009 at 9:07 pmcolonel herman stacy clardy is an awesome military republican. he gave $1000 to mike huckabee. he was part of implementing the great successful surge in iraq.
May 4th, 2009 at 9:08 pmLet the Christianistas hire their own missionaries, put them in their own uniforms, pay for their travel to wherever they want to testify to their beliefs, provide their own bibles and security forces with their own damn money!
After reading this, does anyone still doubt that the Koran was pissed on at Gitmo? Nothing less than a Court Martial and dihonorable discharge will suffice.
The Bush Legacy at work, folks!
PEACE
May 4th, 2009 at 9:13 pmI thought this was hilarious but sad. It’s bad enough that our troops have invaded Afghanistan but to try and cram christianity down these people’s throat is just reprehensible. Afghanistanis have the right to practice whatever religion they choose and should not be subjected to this treatment. Amazing how these hypocrites who sent the bibles think that this is OK.

May 4th, 2009 at 9:34 pm… what does “hunt” mean? … dare i ask…
May 4th, 2009 at 9:34 pmMy understanding of the role of the Chaplain Corps, in any branch of the service, is to comfort not to recruit. This is from Wikipedia’s entry on the Navy Chaplain Corps:
Nowhere does it say their job is to try to convert people.
May 4th, 2009 at 9:45 pmAt least I learned a new word today- proselytize. If I heard this word spoken “on the street” I would have to think one was speaking about prosthetics. I’m sure many Afghan children could use prosthetics what with cluster bombs and all.
Oh…It means hawking a particular religion? They’re sure right on this one! Who needs and artificial leg or arm when they can have their very own personal Jeebus brought to them by Uncle Sam.
They’ll win lots of hearts and minds with this effort…not.

The churches that proselytize tend to be the ones that rely on donations. The Quakers are certainly no less religious than the evangelicals, but they don’t pass the plate.
May 4th, 2009 at 9:49 pmChristians are out of their fcuking minds.
They are arguably the bloodiest religion in history, have a documented history of torture (their symbol is a torture device…), distort any historical event (bearing false witness, of course) to advance a non-existent christian connection, not to mention the whole “intelligent design” bongwater, and now Pew research revealed that church goers were more likely supportive of torture.
Are they sure “Prince of Peace,” isn’t supposed to be “Prince of Pieces?“
May 4th, 2009 at 9:52 pmI don’t think these guys should face a court martial. I think they should be required to apologize to the soldiers under their command and the American people. Then they should be reminded that they answer to the Commander in Chief of a secular nation and that if they proselytize again, they will face court martial.
Then, bust them down a couple of ranks for emphasis. The officers responsible for what’s happened at the Air Force Academy should be court martialed right now, though.
May 4th, 2009 at 9:57 pmOh, and “Christianity Today” published an interview with “Joe The Plumber”
If that’s what christianity attracts and promotes, thank semolina for the FSM!

May 4th, 2009 at 10:15 pmOrganized religion is the greatest evil ever perpetrated upon the human race.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:16 pmThe US military represents we the people. These chaplains are exporting a version of Christianity that I don’t necessarily agree with. Afghanistan is problematic at best. Handing out Bibles in a Muslim world is a direct insult to the prevailing religion and culture. An American soldier should not be peddling religion. Where did the evangelic Christians assume they could speak on my behalf, especially since I find their beliefs problematic in this country?
Put the bibles in your backpack, and do the mission you were sent to do. The individual can return as a civilian to do the missionary work.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:24 pmYou’re born.
You have a brain (you conservatives, just pretend.)
You go to school, learn a variety of facts and events.
Learn to tell time, the seasons, health, decency, truth.
You learn intelligence, problem-solving, cause-and-effect.
You learn to discern charlatans and con men from honest people.
But…
To belong to a religion, a church, you need to forget all that.
Turn off your brain and make yourself give credence to a sky ghost.
A sky ghost that is his own kid.
A sky ghost who does miracles that no one has proven or has evidence of.
But since an aboriginal text claims it to be true.
That’s all you need to know.
You cannot question the text, it says so in the text.
Off Brain=Evangelical Yea, or O.B.E.Y.

May 4th, 2009 at 10:26 pm“hunt people for Jesus.”
Sounds like the sort of thing that Patton would say.
And that Jesus would be horrified by.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:27 pm“hunt people for Jesus.”
That’s what Cheney was doing…though he claimed it was an ‘accident.’
Yeah, right….
May 4th, 2009 at 10:30 pmThese soldiers are breaking a military regulation that is every bit as serious and as important as the one that says not to torture. This is what Bush did to the US military. No WWII general (including Patton or Macarthur) would have allowed this in the Muslim region of the world during wartime.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:36 pmA RELATED ARTICLE – “Jesus killed Mohammed:
The crusade for a Christian military”, By Jeff Sharlet, “Harpers”, May 2009 (SUBSCRIBERS ONLY)
(EXCERPT) Humphrey headed down from the roof to get a briefing. He found his lieutenant, John D. DeGiulio, with a couple of sergeants. They were snickering like schoolboys. They had commissioned the Special Forces interpreter, an Iraqi from Texas, to paint a legend across their Bradley’s armor, in giant red Arabic script.
“What’s it mean?” asked Humphrey.
“Jesus killed Mohammed,” one of the men told him. The soldiers guffawed. JESUS KILLED MOHAMMED was about to cruise into the Iraqi night.
The Bradley, a tracked “tank killer” armed with a cannon and missiles–to most eyes, indistinguishable from a tank itself–rolled out. The Iraqi interpreter took to the roof, bullhorn in hand. The sun was setting. Humphrey heard the keen of the call to prayer, then the crackle of the bullhorn with the interpreter answering–in Arabic, then in English for the troops, insulting the prophet. Humphrey’s men loved it. “They were young guys, you know?” says Humphrey . “They were scared.” A Special Forces officer stood next to the interpreter–“a big, tall, blond, grinning type,” says Humphrey.
“Jesus kill Mohammed!” chanted the interpreter. “Jesus kill Mohammed!”

Jesus doesn’t need any new people right now, he needs those who claim to follow him to act like it.
Forgive the personal story…my husband has spent a lot of time in Afghanistan. He never mentioned his religion, but after some months an Afghani asked him..” are you a Christian?” He said yes. The reply was “What a surprise, you’re so kind”. Want to spread a belief? Live it.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:43 pmWhy are we suprised? Bush said all along that God wanted him to be president. He even spoke to Pat Robertson(or one of the Right-wingers) about his being chosen to lead the American people. And don’t forget, my mother, along with her rightie friends, beleive the war in Iraq was a way to spread Christianity. So does tihs suprise me? Nada.

May 4th, 2009 at 10:59 pmActually this report is true. It first came out three years ago. And from what I am told, it is still going on. I write to several service men and have heard the story from two of them.
This one soldier told me his CO told the unit he “wanted them to be right with God.” And one other one told me that pressure was put upon them in the form of bibles and prayer. So who do you complain to? The officer who is making the demands both subtle and not subtle?
If you want this, that is one thing. But the pressure when unwanted is too much. What is especially troubling is that some of the units have flags with a religious theme. And in a country or part of the world that remembers the crusades, it is a very nasty business. This after all is a country we have invaded and made war upon. And to add religion as an insult to injury is asking for added resentment.
No soldier or any Iraqui should be confronted by a blatant attempt to convert his beliefs. What arrogance. What a mistake. Let’s not forget the slaughter that was perpetrated in this part of the world in the name of Christianity. It was appalling. I don’t care about religion. I don’t care about Islam. What I do care about is anyone trying to force their beliefs on me. And I know any country would feel the same.
As if we have not made enough mistakes. By all means lets make more.
May 4th, 2009 at 11:07 pmWell, the Jewish, Islamic and Christian GOD are the same one. The difference is that the Jewish and the Islamic religion see Jesus as a prophet but not a messiah.

May 4th, 2009 at 11:25 pmIn modern times a great deal of nonsense is talked about masters and disciples, and about the inheritance of a master’s teaching by favorite pupils, entitling them to pass the truth on to their adherents. Of course Zen should be imparted in this way, from heart to heart, and in the past it was really accomplished. Silence and humility reigned rather than profession and assertion. The one who received such a teaching kept the matter hidden even after twenty years. Not until another discovered through his own need that a real master was at hand was it learned that the teching had been imparted, and even then the occasion arose quite naturally and the teaching made its way in its own right. Under no circumstance did the teacher even claim “I am the successor of So-and-so.” Such a claim would prove quite the contrary.
The Zen master Mu-nan had only one successor. His name was Shoju. After Shoju had completed his study of Zen, Mu-nan called him into his room. “I am getting old,” he said, “and as far as I know, Shoju, you are the only one who will carry on this teaching. Here is a book. It has been passed down from master to master for seven generations. I have also added many points according to my understanding. The book is very valuable, and I am giving it to you to represent your successorhip.”
“If the book is such an important thing, you had better keep it,” Shoju replied. “I received your Zen without writing and am satisfied with it as it is.”
“I know that,” said Mu-nan. “Even so, this work has been carried from master to master for seven generations, so you may keep it as a symbol of having received the teaching. Here.”
They happened to be talking before a brazier. The instant Shoju felt the book in his hands he thrust it into the flaming coals. He had no lust for possessions.
Mu-nan, who never had been angry before, yelled: “What are you doing!”
Shoju shouted back: “What are you saying!”
May 4th, 2009 at 11:29 pmLast I recall, when Jesus sent the apostles out he wasn’t issuing M16’s.

Any Question that one impetus for Iraq and Afghanistan invasions was the ability to get Haliburton some oil pipelines.
Any question that another impetus was to reward the religious base by providing an avenue for proseletizing ?
May 4th, 2009 at 11:41 pmObviously the military does not see a problem with the establishment of a religion as long as the subjects are not American. And they may technically be right. The rub here is that in order to do this it becomes necessary to establish that same religion with the military that is imposing it on foreign nationals, which is clearly prohibited. These slippery slope arguments always fall apart on examination.

YOu have no proof that religion is right or wrong. You are not God, so validate your point, you’d have to use evidence gained by being mentally ill. As there is no proof either way.
Except for, we all know we came something b/c we know we are here. And if we just use simple labelling terms and we came from the “allmaker”
That pretty much logically follows that. And then we westernize the “Allmaker” and through semantics call it God
Then therefore God, the allmaker who created everything now logically exists. And posting to your right now b/c God created everything even this post.
So well logically you cannot deny I am posting to here as the allmaker or deny your own reality in the process.
This is basic epistemiological debate of which you got a failing grade in
God says I exist and so do you. Prove that you dont exist and you can prove no one made all and therefore no God.
And really, this is really easy argument for you to lose as it a well worn philosophical path argued many millions of times before you even came to ponder it.
So dont get run over by a truck on this and just save your mouth for cooling your pies
God will always be with you, if you choose to believe and reject your indoctrination

May 5th, 2009 at 12:33 amWe simply live in a stupid world, run by short-sighted selfish megalomaniacs who are owned by a few even more selfish, powermad and megalomaniacal super-rich elites who constantly scheme to create enough chaos so that the war machine has to be ignited to quash the phony chaos so that the super-rich elites can steal things that they don’t feel they should pay for. And it’s all built around sleight-of-hand politics, distraction and fear. One thing they know all to well is that throughout human history fear has always justified the actions of a bully especially to the bully for the benefit of the bully.
Americans of today are the most easily hoodwinked, brainwashed and scared populace on the planet today. How else could our entire congress be as lawless and corrupt as it is? Through the legal bribery system called ‘lobbying’ our worthless politicians have sold us out, sold our country out and sold out our future generations only to enable their owners and enrich themselves.
Our world, destroyed. Right before our eyes. Crimes against humanity. Protected by lies.

I dont know. I feel pretty welcome. I just take a lot of the attacks with a grain of salt. The rightwing contingent of the Churh has engendered a lot of hostility from the left and people get sloppy with their posts. Its like when I criticize wingnuts. I dont MEAN all conservatives nor do I mean all Republicans. Where do you draw that line how do you make it clear exactly WHICH you are pointing to? Now the guy you were criticising Cap Howdy I think is a false flag troll. I think he is a wingnut trying to make the left look bad. For the most part I dont think the hostility is to religion itself though that DOES happen. Rather to the Fallwell, Dobson, Robertson wing. THEY deserve it.

May 5th, 2009 at 12:58 amSomeone believes in Poseidon and another believes in Jesus, they should have the unfettered right to believe in anything or nothing without prejudice. The subject of the thread is in a nutshell, killing another human being because of your beliefs.
That’s where I say that those superstitious beliefs don’t deserve any respect. Mohammed, Jesus, Zeus, FSM… rub their noses in dog shit.
It’s not bigotry, each and every one of them sucks if they are a justification for war.
May 5th, 2009 at 1:00 amLike a true Christian would, lol. I don’t take any of it personally since I am not one but I always have and probably always will be repulsed by religious intolerance.
I haven’t told anyone this before but a family member of mine came in here once. She’s very religious and was a right winger. But she became a disillusioned right winger in Bush’s second term and I got her to visit here. She came in for a week or so, and didn’t say much just read the comments. Then one day she saw someone (she never told me who) make a disparaging comment about Christians, and she spoke up, pointing out “not all Christians are bad”. She was immediately flamed, called every name under the sun, and told to “go back to your neocon religious nutjob blogs” or words to that effect.
And you know what?
:|
She did.
May 5th, 2009 at 1:01 amBy the way, thanks for what you said. We’ve had our differences so that meant a lot to me coming from you.
May 5th, 2009 at 1:02 amNot sure about that. The comments I was rebutting this evening were about a belief in God in general and not any specific individual.
I’ve always been the first one to speak out against hypocrites like Falwell, Dobson, Roberston, Haggard and the rest. But there’s a difference.
I criticize their hypocrisy.
Not the fact that they believe in something.
Just when that something tells them it’s ok to persecute people for say “their sexual preference”. And other hypocrisies like that.
I know this blog could be much more diverse and enjoy a much wider membership if this hatred of Christians could be confined to hating the actions and deeds of “bad Christians”, rather than mocking, ridiculing and condemning the faith itself.

I think it’s more on the same level as when we say ‘how come more of the good Muslims don’t denounce the bad, terrorist Muslims.’ So you can also say ‘where are the good Christians denouncing the bad, hypocritical Christians.’ The sad reality is that for years, decades even, the only Christian voices we’ve heard on a regular basis are those of Swaggert, Robertson, Falwell, Dobson, et al. They are about as representative of Christianity as an eel. They rarely ever taught anything regarding peace, tolerance, love or anything constructive. They are known for pursuing avarice, division, war and intolerance. That’s what I believe motivates some here (myself included at times) to react angrily when confronted with, not just Christian themes, but religious themes in general. Because when two religions conflict in this world, confrontation usually follows.
I am not religious nor will I ever be. I consider myself more of a philosophical, analytical observer of human activity. I have found that most people who call themselves Christian only do so out of social expediency rather than true devotion. The term Christian infers ‘Christ-like.’ Living as best one can according to the teachings of Christ. I just don’t see that much in today’s world. What I do see is a daily dose of lies, hypocracy, intolerance, indifference, murder, rape, corruption, theft, manipulation, racism, bigotry of all kinds and war.
TP only exists because that’s the world we actually have.
May 5th, 2009 at 1:35 amWAYNEBRO Says: 84
I dont see it exactly that way. There to me is a difference between someone saying Religion is just a superstition and saying only an idiot is religious. The first is just their opinion and to me not an attack at all. It is no different than me saying I DO believe in God. It says nothing about them nor what they say about me except that we see it differently. No one has a REAL right to be offended that another says they believe differently. For the most part the attacks I see fall into two categories the attacks I take to be on the TALIBANGELISTS and saying believing in God is like believing in unicorns. Neither do I see as an attack on religious people rather it is stating they dont believe in religion itself which is their right. I see only a very FEW that attack religious liberals like myself. I also do not try to convince them I am right and they are wrong since it does me no harm that they see it differently also who knows they MIGHT be right. It is not given to us to know what happens next that is after we leave this world we are all guessing
May 5th, 2009 at 1:36 amMr. Evil
I consider myself BOTH analytical AND a Christian and I have taken these guys to task too many times to count. I am not dogmatic that is my beliefs are not traditional nor dogma bound and too complex to go into but trust me there was a lot of analysis involved.
May 5th, 2009 at 1:39 amWell I can’t disagree with you there, but there is a reason for that. I’ve been in here for years and one thing’s been consistent and that is the collective “smack down” on religious beliefs. Some like Eugene are able to deal with it and ignore it, but in truth that’s the first time I’ve ever heard him admit to being a Christian. He probably has said it before but I never heard it.
Most however I think are hesitant to speak up for fear of the inevitable flaming they’ll take from a certain group of self professed atheist regulars who joyously proclaim their beliefs to be fairy tales and the believers silly children.
That’s hard for a lot of people to deal with, and the idea of being lambasted publicly and humiliated by their “friends” keeps I think many silent, and even more from even being here.
I understand the hatred of the perversion of Christianity by the right wing, such as the idea of religious war (isn’t that what we’re fighting against, i.e. “Jihad”?) and intolerance for the rights of others. As I said earlier, the right set Christianity back 500 years. And what these commanders are doing trying to get men bearing guns to proselyte those who they wield power over, is hubris of the worst kind.
We just need to find a way to separate the belief from the actions of the believers, so as not to exclude and alienate a particular religious group.
Our tent should be big enough for people of all faiths, and people of no faith, and everything in between.

May 5th, 2009 at 2:01 amI couldn’t agree more.
At least what we see in the mainstream, and from the neoconservatives. But there’s still Christians out there who believe in the teachings of Christ and practice them, and Jew’s who believe in the Torah, and practice it’s teachings, and Muslims who follow the teachings of the Koran, which teaches peace and tolerance, and not the perverted dogma of the extremists.
In all religions we see extremism and fundamentalist hypocrisy, and admittedly we have to look hard for the good sometimes, but it’s there. Atheists, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, etc, all have bad people and good people in them, which means the only way we can judge a person is on what they do, and not what they believe.
May 5th, 2009 at 2:02 amHmm, the founding fathers said Freedom “OF” Religion.

What nuts we are.
May 5th, 2009 at 2:06 amBut, WAYNEBRO, technically it doesn’t even say “freedom of religion”. It actually says that, “Congress shall make no laws respecting an establishment of religion”.
This could be debated to mean that, if one is barred FROM establishing a religion for the State, that all The People are free FROM religious law and edicts or confines to their daily lives and routines unless and until they choose to associate with a religion that provides for that aspect of their daily “spiritual” life.
.
May 5th, 2009 at 2:17 amThe two are not exclusive either, although some in here, mostly undereducated would claim otherwise.
I wonder how many realize that many of the fathers of modern science were highly religious individuals. People talk about Galileo as if he were an atheist, but in fact, he was a Christian. So were many of the great scientists and astronomers, scientists and scholars who laid the foundation for all that we know today.
In fact, it was a scientist and Roman Catholic priest, Georges Lemaitre who developed the theory’s that paved the way for the theory of “The Big Bang”, with his theory of the primeval atom.
This is why it’s so discouraging to hear self professed intellectuals mocking people of faith as fools and children believing in fairy tales.

Here America is smack-dab in Mesopotamia “converting” and “killing” for Jesus, having our own crusades…

.
May 5th, 2009 at 2:22 amWhat “it”? The Constitution?
Who said anything about the Constitution?
I said “our founding fathers”.
Changing my argument so it’s easier to argue is called creating a straw argument.
I didn’t say anything about the Constitution.
I said our founding fathers.
And here’s what one of our most famous founding fathers had to say on the subject.
May 5th, 2009 at 2:23 am
I have talked about being Christian before but I dont bring it up unless it is relevant. I beleive in rendering unto Ceaser and a seperation of Church and state. I wont make any policy arguments based on religion. Morality YES, religion, that is another kettle of fish. My reasons for this are too involved to get into in this context.
May 5th, 2009 at 2:26 amOf course the real scary thing is, you’re actually arguing that a founding principal of our country wasn’t freedom of religion?
The founding fathers never made all those speeches on freedom from the Church of England, to worship as they saw fit in a land of our own? The move towards Protestantism and to worship when, where and what they chose?

May 5th, 2009 at 2:37 amWAYNEBRO,
Freedom OF religion is also the ability to be free FROM the confines of ANY religion. And yes, I was referring to the Constitution. I’m glad you picked up on “it”.
.
May 5th, 2009 at 2:38 amOh and by the way Max, if you’re going to quote the 1st Amendment, you might quote it accurately instead of trying to create false straw arguments based on your “editing” of the Clause.
Here’s the religion clause in the “actual” US Constitution.
There. Now you know what it actually says.
:|
I’d get that Constitution of yours looked at.
It must be broken.
May 5th, 2009 at 2:42 amPicked up on it? You mean corrected your straw argument, since I never mentioned it?
You changed my argument on the “Founding Fathers”, to your argument on the Constitution.
As for “picking up on it”, I’m fully aware of the US Constitution Junior, as I’ve ready it about a million times in my half century on the planet.
What I did “pick up” on was your selective “Editing” of it, to focus on only the “establishment” clause as opposed to the “free exercise” clause, which didn’t fit in with your bastardization of one of the founding principals this country was built on.
Like I said, in “most” elementary schools, they teach this before the 3rd grade.
But those “special schools” probably don’t.
So I’ll make an allowance.
Now you know.
.
May 5th, 2009 at 2:46 am.
Dear WAYNEBRO,
Do I have to pick which religion?
Why do I have to pick one at all?
If I don’t pick one, then how can I be free of it?
The slave, when free of his master…
… Is then free from ever being owned.
The gay couple who are free to wed…
… Are then free from oppression.

Just random posts out of boredom?
May 5th, 2009 at 3:03 amthat should be saying and I was referencing Joe’s comment.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:04 amMaybe ThinkProgress should just change it’s name to “WAYNEBRO’s Blog.”
May 5th, 2009 at 3:06 amI think it all comes down to one basic premise: we despise being lied to. We despise having something we enjoy, cherish, adore, etc, etc used to further a purpose we would otherwise not involve ourselves in whatsoever. This turns us to hate, being aloof, distrusting others, disgusting groups, bigotry, etc, etc.
What does a lie do to us? It HURTS! Pain without a healthy release leads to anger to cover it up. More pain – more anger – more pain – even more anger. And bam! We’re all far worse off than before.
Do we feel betrayed by our government? YES WE DO! Are we hurt? YES WE ARE! Do we need a release of our pain? YES WE DO! Now we need to find a way to get that release. I hope each and every one of you finds a release and I don’t care how you do it as long as it doesn’t create pain for another bystander in this life.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:06 am#117,
STOP IT!!!
I no more twisted words than YOU did mine first.
Funny that YOU didn’t ask what I was referring to and instead decided to control and manipulate the subject and decided what I was referring to so as to attack me on it. I never even addressed my original comment to you.
Now, for the last time, I do not appreciate your mental mind f ucks with me in the least. PLEASE STOP IT.
Your condescending approach does you no favors. STOP IT!
Respect is earned and after the last few days of hijinks’s, I would hope that you might have wanted to allow some distance and breathing room from the sharp criticism and repartee. But I see you don’t know when to STOP!
At this point, after the last few days WAYNEBRO, I honestly don’t know which one of you is WAYNEBRO at any moment and do not appreciate it IN THE LEAST. Think Progress really needs to be on top of this abuse of their board.

Here. Let me say that again.
You EDITED the Constitutional Amendment, to fit your argument.
You purposely left out rest of the clause on religion so you could float your argument.

May 5th, 2009 at 3:21 amMr WAYNEBRO,
I don’t care enough about what you have to say to argue with you.
It’s interesting that for a self-professed non-Christian, you so enjoy nailing yourself on the cross.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:22 am.
Dear WAYNEBRO,
My original comment:
1) The “It’s” refers to that “Big Tent”
2) This post was to “New” America idealists
Then WAYNEBRO responds:
I never addressed what the Founders said. But it seems you do.
But WAYNEBRO is damned certain to win this, no? So you asserts that “Founding Fathers” is what I meant because in your lack of sincerity and rush to judgement, you didn’t even ask what I meant. But you already did, YES? Didn’t even have to ask.
So, when I filled in that blank in you mind and said I meant the Constitution, you insisted that I was incorrect and was making a straw man argument.
errrr…. what…???
I said I meant Constitution, while you insist that I meant Founding Fathers…
… and I’m the one who’s wrong? According to WAYNEBRO?
Sorry BRO,
Your straw man, not mine.
Good night

.
Dear WAYNEBRO,
If you don’t like my Freedom to selectively edit(read condense) a steeply complex ideal deeply rooted in our Constitution so as to fit that concept into a tight rant…
… Then FLAG ME! Or scroll past!
.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:27 amAnd you EDITED the Amendment to fit your argument.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:29 amYour red herring trying to get me to debate who “meant” what is moot.
All that matters is that when you did “mention” the Constitution, you EDITED the Amendment, to make it appear that the establishment of religion was the only thing mentioned.
You EDITED the Constitution to sell your argument against the freedom of religion in the United States.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:32 am.
#145 WAYNEBRO Cried:
SO FLAG ME FOR IT!
.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:32 amWhy?
Are you under the perception that I’m as ignorant as you to attempt to censor my debating opponent, rather than confront his lies?
Especially after our two day debate where I condemned flagging people except for threats or profane comments?
I don’t need an Flag button to deal with someone who edits the 1st Amendment to fit his idiotic view that there is no right to freedom of worship in the US.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:35 amJust because you lie, doesn’t mean you don’t have a right to lie.
And get caught at it.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:36 amBut you didn’t edit a steeply complex ideal….you took two sentences, and edited ONE of them out.
To fit your inane argument that Americans do not have the right of freedom of worship.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:38 am.
And I don’t need no self righteous concern troll nit picking!
.
IF YOU THINK YOU CAN DO BETTER, BY ALL MEANS DO!!!
Here, make it work:
Freedom, big-tent, political hot issues of TORTURE, RELIGION, WARRANTLESS SPYING, OVER ARCHING GROWING OPPRESSION.
BRING IT ON!!!
If you don’t like the artist, the absolute worst thing is to tell the artist you can do better. Obviously you think you can. Otherwise, like a grain of salt, the critic moves on.
.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:40 amYou took the clause on religious freedom, which is comprised of two short sentences,
and presented it as this;
and then proceeded to argue as if the rest of the clause didn’t exist.
That’s as low and dishonest, as it gets.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:41 amYou’re a liar Max, and all you’re doing now is tossing out a million red herrings trying to cover up your shame at being caught EDITING THE FIRST AMENDMENT, to fit your argument.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:41 am.
WAYNEBRO,
F UCK OFF!
.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:45 amYea, I figured that would be about all you’d have left.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:45 amI had no idea that a commenter on a political blog had the power to amend the Constitution. Thank you, Mr WAYNEBRO, for giving us a heads-up to the immense power of Mr Max Anax junius -1.
The Constitution certainly gives us freedom of religion, and the separation of church and state should guarantee us the freedom from religion (should we so choose), although these days it is a little mushy.
I think you know this, Mr WAYNEBRO, but you enjoy being deliberately obtuse because you are a bully.
Of course, that is just my observation and opinion, and you will likely have many, many condescending words to aim my way in defense of your long-suffering victimhood. Maybe you could get this post up to 500 comments as well.
Good luck!
May 5th, 2009 at 3:47 amReally?
Well try your scroll button next time sockpuppet.
You won’t look so stupid then.
Here, I’ll post it for you again since you’re scroll button is broken.
So we see, he did “edit” the Constitution.
:|
Better get that scroll button looked at.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:52 amThe real Amendment, says this.
Yet he edited that out, then presented it as a whole, and suggested that the other portion wasn’t even there.
Which is the work of a scumbag troll.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:53 amAnd usually when you’re dealing with a lying, scumbag troll, and he gets caught like he did here, he’ll rant, rage, then implode, and then in will come a sockpuppet who is rarely seen, yet suddenly in the wee hours of the morning, there it is.
To defend him, attack the character of his opponent, and distract from his shame at being caught so blatantly lying.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:56 amVituperation Toxicity,
Everybody is wrong to BRO.
Even if I put the other part in, he would have picked at something else.
See, when we respond to him, it’s a notch on his EGO scale and he thinks it’s positive attention. Even when he digs, if people respond, it’s a ding on his attention meeter.
Last night he mentioned how busy he was responding to 30 other posters. When I mentioned that he sounded bothered by it, he corrected me and explaind that he wasn’t complaining…
… So why mention that he’s been busy reponding to 30 other people if not to complain, but to BRAG?
It’s about WAYNEBRO and his ego.
Welcom to T.P. :\
.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:59 am.
Like I said WAYNEBRO,
If you think you can do better, DO BETTER.
Or shut the F UCK UP!
I already explained that I condensed the whole of the ideal to fit with the artistic rant. But obviously, you insincerity still insists that I’m wrong and now you want to slander me.
Some character you have BRO.
I’ve asked you to stop, yet you won’t let go.
WHOMEVER YOU ARE, WAYNEBRO, YOU ARE NOT A NICE PERSON!
YOU ARE EVIL AND TWISTED!
FROM HERE ON OUT, ANY RESPONSE FROM YOU TO ME WILL BE FLAGGED AS ABUSIVE ATTACKS.
I REPEATE…
… ANY WAYNEBRO REPLIES TO ME WILL BE FLAGGED AS ABUSIVE ATTACKS!

Because of the last few days and the lax site monitoring, the name jacking and inflammatory rhetoric so as to instigate arguments just for kicks, WAYNEBRO is NOT a name I can trust.
Sorry, but that’s the way it is.

Dear Think Progress,
Seriously, IP address.
.
May 5th, 2009 at 4:09 amDo better than what?
Editing the 1st Amendment to fit my position?
:|
I already did better than that.
May 5th, 2009 at 4:13 amHere, since your cranial implosion is not yet complete, lets look at it again.
You actually took the 1st Amendment, which states clearly;
..and REMOVED the second of the TWO sentences, and then proceeded to lie, going so far as to suggest the second half didn’t exist.
Here. Here is where you did just that.
Now, we’re talking TWO sentences, in the 1st Amendment, that comprise the religion clause, i.e. the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause.
And it was without a doubt a purposeful deception.
See, you had to actually take your mouse cursor, and carefully insert it in between the two sentences, remove the first sentence, purposely omitting the second, even though you were staring straight at it, and then post the ONE sentence without the concluding sentence! lol
And then you even went so far as to suggest the second sentence didn’t even exist! lol
Even though it clearly stated right in front of your eyes,
So you looked at it, read it, then edited out the portion that didn’t fit with your false argument that we don’t have a right to worship freely.
That’s some serious deceit, on a scale worthy of the worst trolls the right wing has to offer.
May 5th, 2009 at 4:21 am.
Dear T.P.
Whomever this person is, they have continued for the last several days to thread jack and instigate arguments and fights with other posters.
It appears to be deliberate and at times, becomes abusive.
.
May 5th, 2009 at 4:29 amNo Max, you decided to lie, and then got caught.
And now like the lying troll you are, busted in all your shame, you turn to the only thing you have left.
Your dirty little censor button, hoping that someone will help you win your debate by silencing your opponent.
May 5th, 2009 at 4:34 amBut I will address you no more as soon as you stop addressing me. Something you’ve yet to do.
Instead you cry like a little sissy, trying to get the flag button to do what you couldn’t do.
Cover up your being busted editing the Constitution and taking OUT the parts that contradicted your argument.
So flag away little girl. Flag away.
I knew that would be all you’d have left.
May 5th, 2009 at 4:37 amAbusive?
You mean like this?
Yes…that probably should have been flagged.
Fortunately for you, I’m not a fascist little worm who doesn’t believe in Free Speech or Freedom of Religion.
Like you.
May 5th, 2009 at 4:39 amI wonder what it takes to willingly debate someone all night, lie, cheat, edit the Constitution by removing the parts that contradict ones argument, and then, at the end of the night, when you’ve been exposed lying, and your argument fallen flat, ….turn to the flag button to try and get your opponent banned.
I’m not sure that’s the purpose of the flag button.
I think it’s for people who you “don’t” willingly engage in debate.
:|
But that’s just me.
May 5th, 2009 at 4:42 am.
I always find it amusing when critics think they can produce better art…
… “More genuine, to the point,” but never do.
Sorta like these Christo-fascists mentioned in the article…
… Thinking they are better than Christ, but never are.
.
May 5th, 2009 at 4:53 amNo other sockpuppets?
Cool.
I’ll say good night then, by reminding people that Max’s lie about the 1st Amendment, is just that. A lie. Which explains why he didn’t support freedom of speech in the 1st Amendment either, because he edits the Amendment to fit what he wants it to say.
Here’s what Max tried to sell tonight, before he went on the flag binge.
Then, when I showed him what it REALLY says;
.. he went mad and started cursing and swearing and now thinks I should be banned for merely confronting and exposing his lying about the 1st Amendment.
Americans have right to worship as they see fit, as long as it doesn’t violate established civil and criminal laws of the state in which they live.
It’s one of the cornerstones of our republic. And when someone like this troll tells you we don’t, you can be assured of one thing. He’s not here to “help” and he sure as hell ain’t no progressive or liberal. Because progressives and liberals believe in our 1st Amendment freedoms.
Neocons do not.

Let me tell you a funny story…
… At Mothers Day dinner last year, the family with the off shoots and their off spring gathered for dinner. This time, it was just the adults. Well, my brotha asked his sister-inlaw to pass the salt, ‘cuz he likes his turkey salty that way.
She had just used finished using the shaker and was about to set it down when he asked her to pass it to him. She ever so politely picked up the pepper shaker and immediately handed it to him and set the salt shaker next to her plate.
My brother then laughed and said that he meant the salt. But my sister-inlaw scolded him and said, “No, you did not, you meant the pepper shaker you liar. See, you forgot to mention salt AND pepper and so that makes you a liar and no, you can not have what you meant because you are a liar and everyone at the table has just witnessed that you are, in fact a liar because you are dishonest and a cheat.”
… Happy Mothers Day everyone. Pull up a seat?

May 5th, 2009 at 7:53 amEver wonder how many millions of people have been killed by religions in the name of God.
May 5th, 2009 at 8:13 amThe really funny part is that if God is all powerful you would think he could take care of the non believers himself…yet according to religion us piddly little humans have to do his work.

May 5th, 2009 at 9:03 amI didn’t scroll through all the posts, so this may already have been said. But if it has, I’ll say it again.
Imagine if our country was occupied by the army from a predominately Muslim country. Like Egypt. Or Saudi Arabia. And imagine if their army contained some Muslim zealots who believed it was their God-ordained job to “hunt people for Allah”.
I believe there would already be some tension between American citizens our occupiers, simply because we really don’t like being occupied — no matter how noble their mission, and no matter how helpful their efforts are to us. If they did not respect our way of life, if they did not respect the way we worship (or DIDN’T worship), and if they expended any organized effort to proselytize and hand out copies of the Quran, along with admonitions that we would go to h*ll unless we converted, I believe we would be rather resentful.
When we occupy another country, we must remember that we are the guests there. We have a military mission, not a theological one. We aren’t going to “win hearts and minds” if we diss the way they worship God.
My suggestion to these Christian soldiers — get your hands on an English translation of the Quran. Read it. Talk to Muslims about their faith. You would be surprised at the similarities between Islam and Christianity. You would probably be shocked to find out how revered Jesus is by them. And you might even be amazed to find out that Mary, the mother of Jesus, is mentioned more times in the Quran than she is in the Bible (she even has her very own Surah, or chapter). You really should treat your time in Afghanistan as a God-given learning experience.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:12 amThat would be nice but these chowderheads get their orders from a higher source. It is a crusade.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:18 amHunt people for Jesus? Yikes!
May 5th, 2009 at 9:19 amExactly. Yikes. And they wonder why the population is uncooperative.
They consider what US soldiers are doing as condemning their family’s souls to hell and insulting the honor of their clan. This is so damaging it’s unbelievable that hese fools get away with it.

May 5th, 2009 at 12:54 pmI see Mr WAYNEBRO had no real response to my comment, other than to call me a “sockpuppet,” and the criticize the late hour of my comments.
Are there prescribed hours for responding to certain people? Mr WAYNEBRO seems to have been pontificating on this blog for most of the day, so I hadn’t thought to make an appointment.
May 5th, 2009 at 1:26 pmGee Max, I thought you were just going to ‘flag’ me since you couldn’t defeat me in debate.
But as for “LINK IT”, lol, how about I just repost it for all to see?
Here’s your argument against freedom of religion in this country. Observe;
So not only did you make the argument, you actually went so far as to EDIT the 1st Amendment, to make it fit your argument.
You REMOVED the second sentence comprising the clause on religion, called the “free exercise clause” and then argued that as if it didn’t even exist.
And you got caught.
And then you went nuts, cursing and swearing and then demanding I be banned.
And now you’re back lying some more.
And being exposed again.
May 5th, 2009 at 2:57 pmThat’s it Kay.
I’m sure the Brownshirt goons sitting around mocking the Jew’s religion in a Berlin Beer hall laughed to when the “little Jew ran away”.
All bigots and pigs laugh at the religious and their beliefs.
Fortunately, this country has laws against religious intolerance, just like it has laws against racial intolerance.
And fortunately we’re starting now to focus on stamping out intolerance and prejudice against people for the sexual preference.
Unfortunately, we still have bigots like you, who push for religious intolerance and prejudice, setting back efforts to ban sexual intolerance and shoring up the bigots.
Some day, bigots like you will be a thing of the past, and intolerance based on race, creed, color, religion or sexual preference, will be the standard for all Americans.
Until then, we need to stand up to bigots like you.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:06 pmThe same laws and ideals that would protect the gay or lesbian person from discrimination and intolerance based on “sexual preference”, also protect religious people from discrimination and intolerance based on “religious preference”.
People like you are just too stupid to see that.
May 5th, 2009 at 3:09 pmAnd Mad Max? This ones just so nice I’m going to post it twice.
Because it shows what you’re really about.
Here’s the argument you claimed you never made.
So once more, not only do we see that you DID make the argument, we also see that you actually EDITED the 1st Amendment, and REMOVED the Free Exercise clause, then proceeded to argue there was no free exercise provided for by the Amendment!
LOL
Here Max. Here’s what the 1st Amendment really says, prior to your EDITING it out;
You actually REMOVED the second sentence, and the “comma”, inserted a PERIOD, and then argued against the free exercise clause as if it didn’t exist, claiming that it “TECHNICALLY” didn’t say that.
You REMOVED the “Free Exercise” Clause, then pretended it didn’t exist.
When you got caught, you went nuts, and started cursing and swearing and then demanding that “I” be banned.
Which makes you nothing more than a lying troll.

Is that really all the First Amendment says?
If I’m to be lambasted and called a liar for quoting only one sentence of the First Amendment, what does that make other people who do the same.
The entire First Amendment isn’t JUST about the freedom from religion, is it? Of course not, but some people make it that so that they can wield it as their fact. WRONG!
Thus, diengenuous is the best descriptor I can come up with.
… I’m still waiting for that “special” someone to craft a better artistic rant based on the criteria that I did. I mean, obviously mine didn’t suit someones taste, they think they can do better, but don’t anyway.
I guess that’s what defines what a critic is. It’s their skill, their claim to fame and the 30 posters that take up valuable time for someone “special” to respond to are his fan club? Must be why we all keep telling him to f uck off, YES?
I say, flag the disruptive attention whore, blog hijacking troll.

Funny how some people rush to defend what suits their argument…
May 6th, 2009 at 2:11 am… Such disengenuousness, indeed!
.
No one “special” has been able to cite where I said the freedom of religion should be restricted.
But some people lie to make their slander appear honest.
