Scarborough Warns Rep. Mike Pence To ‘Be Careful’ When Criticizing Limbaugh

Yesterday, Rush Limbaugh — the leader of the conservative movement — criticized the newly-formed GOP outfit, the National Council For A New America, which is launching a “listening tour.” “We do not need a listening tour,” Limbaugh said. “We need a teaching tour.”

This morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough invited Rep. Mike Pence to respond to Limbaugh’s criticisms, but in doing so, warned him to “be careful” about criticizing the boss:

SCARBOROUGH: What say you sir?

PENCE: Well, uh, I — you know, uh, you know — I love Rush and uh, but I think the…

SCARBOROUGH: Be careful.

Scarborough’s concern for Pence is warranted. As ThinkProgress has noted, those in the Republican Party who have dared to criticize Limbaugh (such as Michael Steele and Reps. Todd Tiahrt and Phil Gingrey) have quickly backed down. Pence and Scarborough were not willing to go down the same path.

After being warned by Scarborough not to criticize Limbaugh, Pence sought to placate the right-wing radio host, claiming the GOP is not just about “listening and learning” but also “helping to educate the American people.” Watch it:

Pence has been a staunch defender of Rush. After Limbaugh declared his hope for Obama to fail, Pence backed him up, saying, “You bet, we want those policies to fail.” Pence also defended Limbaugh recently, claiming, “I don’t believe Rush Limbaugh has a racist bone in his body.”

Unlike Pence and Scarborough, former Secretary of State Colin Powell is unafraid of taking on Limbaugh. Yesterday at a security conference in Washington, Powell ripped Limbaugh:

He blasted radio commentator Rush Limbaugh, saying he does not believe that Limbaugh or conservative icon Ann Coulter serve the party well. He said the party lacks a “positive” spokesperson. “I think what Rush does as an entertainer diminishes the party and intrudes or inserts into our public life a kind of nastiness that we would be better to do without,” Powell said.

“Rush” and “nastiness”; two words were never better for association with each other.

Mike ‘my hair is perfect’ Spence is a prime example of what’s wrong with the right.

Rhetoric, old ideas and new accusations are all they’ve got.

As long as Rush & mAnn continue to be spokespersons for the Party of Pain, nothing will change.

LOL! I saw this spot this morning and laughed (and rolled my eyes). This politician is such a tool. Talks off topic and in circles. I Whish I got paid to be a tool – on second thought ….

Back when I was a kid in the ’50’s we’d go to the corner grocery candy counter and buy big, red wax lips. They were about 6″ across and made our mouths look HUGE. I think that all of the republican politicians need to be issued a set of those lips when they take the oath of office–the better to kiss a larger portion of Rush’s big, fat ass. I can’t believe how these pissants bow down to that jerk. Then, they have the utter gall to criticize President Obama for “bowing down” to the Arabian king. Stupid tools!

  6. paleolib says:

I’m not really sure Limprod has any bones in his body. The fat, phlegm and bile that comprise his corporeal form however are most assuredly racist to the core.

  7. raynman says:

It amazes me how a major (well, formerly major)policical party has allowed itself to be hijacked by right-wing radio….

  8. The Ctenocephalides Dogfather says:

Something tells me that if Rush challenges Colin Powell, Powell is more likely to kick Rush’s a$$ than to back down and apologize…

Something also tells me that Powell is more like us than he is like them…

Who cares about Scarborough, Pence or Rush? This is the blind blabbing about the blind. Thereare more important things to worry about.

Fat, phlegm, and bile? You appear to be comparing Rush to Jabba the Hutt. Hmmm…come to think of it, everybody was afraid of him, too.

  11. fletc3her says:

The Republican party is out of ideas. Their official party platforms has been a sham for several decades. Their recent turn as the leaders of all three branches of our government turned disastrous.

Unfortunately embracing their true ideals of cronyism, giveaways to the rich and to corporations, war profiteering, overseas adventurism, letting infrastructure fall into disrepair, dismantling of the social safety net, and institutionalized deception of the American people, probably won’t win over the voters.

  12. MiGrant says:

Something also tells me that Powell is more like us than he is like them…
Maybe, but he failed America when we needed him most, when he went along with the WMD lies even though he knew better. Sometimes life only gives you one chance to do the right thing.

Like in camps? The “re-education camps” that Michele Bachman warned us about?

Oh, me! Oh, my! So It’s the Republican’s that feel the need to re-educate all us mislead miscreants!?!

    Someone is off script…

  16. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

Heh. Jabba was killed by a scantily clad Princess Lea with his own chain. A fittingly ironic end for a misogynist.

  22. LibertyLover says:

“I think what Rush does as an entertainer diminishes the party and intrudes or inserts into our public life a kind of nastiness that we would be better to do without,” Powell said.

I think what Rush does diminishes everyone, especially Rush himself.

  23. Purple State says:

Let’s face facts. This is a listening tour where people are going to air their grievances in a smaller and less-controversial forum than the tea parties. The GOP’s potential presidential candidates will listen, air their own grievances, then use their own to attack the Democratic Party for the next election cycle.

This isn’t a “teaching tour”. This is an out-and-out handshaking event for 2012.

  24. Marie says:

Pence, Sessions, et al — they are all ultra-conservative, righteous, authoritative, old-thinking party members who fail to see that the way they see their party is being marginalized.
Let them continue with their false thinking – and drag the party further into oblivion. We need a two party system to make government work, but they are all wrong.
Let the Dems rule, clean up the messes, and put us back on the right track while these losers cluck their tongues like old bitties.

  25. rightwing-leftwing says:

Tired of being lied to @ 15

Let’s propagate this “education camp” thing until it becomes “truth” just like the GOP. It just might work!

  30. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

The Republican Party has become a small group of egoists clamoring for attention. To a one from Rush, on to Steele,Bill-o to Palin, Cantor, Romney and Newt etal. It’s all, “Listen to me. Look at me!” None have a viable solution to even one of the major problems that their illustrious Party has caused over the last decade or so. They are jealous of any attention lavished on others in their party yet they have nothing to say other than the same old shit that has failed miserably time and again. They will be mired in this circular firing squad for a long time. Funny thing is that whoever is still standing at the end of it all will still have no ideas other than obstruction, finger pointing and tax cuts/deregulation for the corporations. They have collectively crapped in their beds and now will be relegated to wallow in it ad infinitum. And if I may add, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving pack of fools.

THEN, Mr. Panetta, WHY BOTHER? They broke the torture laws, and if you know who did it, why they did it, and don’t punish them for their crimes, why go through the expense and troubleas NO ONE will learn a damn thing from it. Don’t waste our time unless we punish for it because it will be repeated again down the line.

A staunch conservative friend of mine was saying this morning that the Repugnant Party hasn’t hit bottom yet. As long as they have an entertainer as their spokesman, they are fcked.

Couldn’t agree more. I fully support Rush and am glad to see him continuing the Marginalization Campaign. Pretty soon the Repugnant Party will be so small we can drown it in a bathtub.

  35. WaltB says:

Fightin’ Joe McCarthy was taken down when he had an alcohol caused dissembling rant that showed him for the mean, lying and nasty person he was. Rush is known as a drug addicted, mean, lying and nasty person who goes on dissembling rants every day, yet people still listen to him. What’s gone wrong with us from back then? I don’t get it at all.

  41. MapleStreet says:

First, I would hope that Pence (or for that matter anyone)would know from the recent repub experience the consequences of criticizing Limbaugh.

But what got me is Limbaugh saying we need a teaching tour and don’t need a listening tour.

Isn’t that, de facto, an admission of his belief that he is perfect and has nothing to learn ?

  42. texasrick says:

It’s amazing the influence that Limpbaugh has over the conservative party.

I live in the heart of conservative Texas, and I can testify that he could tell these lemmings that moon is cheese and they would take it as gospel.

It is a sad commentary when supposedly “intelligent” people base their entire philosophy on the ranting of a bloated, self-absorbed blowhard like Rush.

Am I the only person who read that and thought Scarborough sounded uncannily like a mob enforcer or a foot soldier in the secret police force of a dictatorship — to wit, someone who earns his living by threatening people with harm so that they keep their mouths shut? Of course, a perceptive person only has to listen to Limbaugh’s program once or twice in order to realize that the analogy is actually remarkably apt — Limbaugh seems to share more than a few personality traits with dictators and gang leaders.

  46. DeweyGland says:

Come on, give fats a break – he’s got to act like an idiot so his ratings stay high enough to make him enough money to keep buying those drugs.

  47. Uosdwis says:

What exactly is Rush’s power? That he can mobilize callers to flood his switchboard? That he can cause his campaign financing to dry up? That he can change the outcome of elections (that’s a stretch)? That he can generate bad PR for Pence? They fear SOMETHING when they back off their criticism.

  48. nanlichi says:

Tracy_5, a serious question for you. I know you are Republican and I assume that you are a Rush listener, (if not then never mind) do you think it is a good sign that the Republicans allow Rush to represent their brand?

  49. ranus69 says:

That’s why I have such great respect for Colin Powell and Scarborough is a punk, I don’t even watch the his show.

Wonder what Rush’s GOP campaign contributions have been someone should look into that?

Tracy can’t answer you right now. Rush Limbaugh is on.

  52. tombaker says:

Since when do D congresspeople issue public apologies to Randi Rhodes?

Tracy, you can’t use examples like that – because they’re fictitious.

  53. drunkfoulmouthfiltybeast says:

I, for one, do not need any teaching or ways of change that are supposedly ocurrling in the Repulsican party. They lie, get elected based on those lies, then goes about doing what the base tells them to do. Any changes that would be made would to improve their believability in theirs lies to convince the gulliable, any sane or insane voter would not even consider voting for a person so UnAmerican as a Repulsican, their facade is fraudulant as is their integrity, their values, morals or scrupples. They are by deflination surrulous and cheap snake oil salesmen.

  54. nanlichi says:

Thanks. A little different perspective than the answer I got from my Republican co-worker. His sense is that the Rush/Savage/Coulter shock entertainment is causing the party to lose support.

  55. spring heeled jack says:

I think it’s too much of a concession to Limbaugh to say he’s an entertainer. I don’t find him funny or clever. Same with Coulter.

  56. Cal Malenky says:

So Limbaugh spends 3 hours every day doing nothing but slamming the President and everyone in his party, making up lies out of thin air, but anyone who even hints at criticizing Limbaugh brings the wrath of El Rushbo that continues until the critic genuflects at the altar of Ego Inflated Broadcasting and begs for forgiveness.
I recall people who were too critical of King W found out that they were on the no-fly list. Ask Wayne Slater, who dared to write a book -”Bush’s Brain”- critical of Karl Rove. He is not allowed to fly in the U.S.

  57. tombaker says:

I’m not following your reasoning Tracy, because, like most of the other “liberal” or “progressive” types I know, iconoclasm and personality cult-ism are not the fundamental drivers of my values.

Blind allegiance to a particular person or group are antithetical to my worldview.

I think you mistakenly project that kind of thinking onto us here, because you cannot imagine thinking otherwise yourself.

  58. mild_bill says:

I respect Colin Powell. Too bad he still calls

  59. rightwing-leftwing says:

Pence, How does it feel to be Rushs’ lil’ b!tch?

  60. Wiz says:

As the Republican party boss Limbaugh deserves the respect of every Republican, as for the rest of us not so much. I praise Limbaugh for doing everything he can to ensure the GOP continues on it current course to the trash bin. Kudos to Hannity and Beck as well, way to go guys, keep up the good work. This is like sitting in an intensive care hospital room and playing with plug of the machine keeping the GOP alive.

  61. rightwing-leftwing says:

    Hi Tracist__neagative 5!

Thanks for letting me know about Randi Rhodes! I never heard of her before today. Now I can keep my mind sharp on important liberal issues. She seems to have come from humble beginnings like most liberals do. Getting smacked down by “the man” tends to create extreme liberals ya know. Something these reich-wing-dingalings should consider.

Ya know, I never seem to see any right-wing activists come from humble beginnings. They seem to come from wealth like Trannie Coulter or a cesspool like Flush Limpdick.

    I’m just say’n

  62. tombaker says:

Suggesting my “exposure is limited” is a pretty bold conjecture Tracy, for someone who has no idea other than my posts here who I am, where I come from, or what I do.

Snobbery will get you nowhere fast, babe.

Not that I’ve ever seen you gain traction on an issue around here, in the year or two I’ve “been exposed” to your acumen.

  63. rightwing-leftwing says:

    Tracist__negative IQ of 5

You crack me up – haha! I love playing with you on these dead threads. You play in so easily which is why radio shock jocks like Flush Limpdick are so popular with your “kind.”

So, I’m “ignorant because I never heard of some radio host? I just learned of TP this year so, I guess I’m REALLY ignorant by your WEAK definition of ignorant. Uninformed would be a nice way to say it and maybe you’d gain some much needed respect from the TP community – you have no respect so go away till you get some.

  64. drunkfoulmouthfiltybeast says:

  66. Libellula saturata Annie says:

Tracy: obviously you’ve never listened to Randi Rhodes if you compare her to the Savage Weenie.

I don’t recall Randi EVER picking on disabled children or calling for more torture or more war or the killing of homosexuals. Ever.

Unlike your reichwing spokesholes who spew nothing but hate, Randi spews truth.

And I can understand how that would upset you, Tracist.
