Cantor Caves: Republicans Will Be ‘Listening’ To Rush Limbaugh, Not The American Public

Last week, Republicans kicked off their National Council for a New America, an attempt to revive the image of the GOP. One of the leading participants, former governor Jeb Bush, said that it was time for Republicans to “listen first, to learn a little bit, to upgrade our message a little bit.” Similarly, on Sunday, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) told CNN that Republicans should be “listening to the people“:

CANTOR: Listen, John, I think there is a lot of blame to go around. And what we’re trying to do here today is kick off a series of town hall forums so that we can get back to listening to the people. [...]

So we’ve got to go out and, again, reconnect and make sure that our policy prescriptions are relevant to the challenges that people in the Northeast are facing, to the challenges that educated, affluent families are facing, as well as those much more challenged in the inner cities and rural areas of our country.

There is a common theme in this country and that is opportunity. That’s what these forums are going to be about, about listening to how we tap into the real challenges and how we allow opportunity to flourish again.

Listening to all this talk about listening, Rush Limbaugh became incensed. He said that instead of taking cues from the American public, Republicans should fan out and spread their dogma through a “teaching tour.” This morning on MSNBC, Cantor backtracked and said that he agreed with Limbaugh:

SCARBOROUGH: So, let’s start with Rush Limbaugh, who seems to be mocking the idea of a listening tour. What do you say to Rush?

CANTOR: You know, Joe, really, this — this is not a listening tour. You know, think about what we saw a couple weeks ago on the TEA parties.

Cantor added that the National Council was actually an opportunity “to go out across this country to talk about our conservative principles and to appeal to as many elements in our society as we can.” Watch it:

Yesterday, Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) had a similar retraction, saying that the GOP’s objective was to help “educate the American people,” even though a week before he had said that “we’re going to listen, we’re going to learn.”

Transcript:

SCARBOROUGH: So, let’s start with Rush Limbaugh, who seems to be mocking the idea of a listening tour. What do you say to Rush?

CANTOR: You know, Joe, really, this — this is not a listening tour. You know, think about what we saw a couple weeks ago on the TEA parties. The American people are very frustrated that they really see a government in Washington that doesn’t hear them, that doesn’t respond to their needs and, frankly, are upset at a government that doesn’t work.

What the National Council for a New America is, is an opportunity for us to go out across this country to talk about our conservative principles and to appeal to as many elements in our society as we can and to really talk to them as a higher level and say, look, there are some transcendental goals that we’re all about in this country, and they can best be achieved through conservative principles of freedom and opportunity.

That’s what this movement is really about.

SCARBOROUGH: But, you know, following up on Rush’s point about how you need to go out on a teaching tour, I look at a budget that’s passed that the CBO says is going to bankrupt America. I look at a lot of policies that — that we’re moving towards that I think are terrible for America.

And then I look at polls that show that this president has 65, 66, 67 percent approval ratings. It seems to me, if you’re right and if I’m right, maybe we do need to go out and explain why and do a little teaching.

CANTOR: Well, you know, look, Rush is talking about conservative principles, and we’re talking about conservative principles. And no question, Joe, this president is extremely popular personally, but it’s his policies, once they — once the details are flushed out — that have proven in the polls over and again to be not very popular at all.

And I think this is where the frustration is coming from, and that’s why we do need, in the Republican Party, to go out and talk about the our conservative principles and how they apply to the challenges that this country is facing and the challenges that people are facing in communities across this country.

Update Today on his show, Limbaugh responded to Cantor's backtrack: "Good!"

So when you guys said it was a “listening tour” you were lying, right? You really don’t care what Americans have to say. What’s important is what YOU have to say to US.

    Glad we got that straight.

When politicians talk about a “listening tour” it’s always just PR-speak for a talking tour. They’re trying to be *perceived* as “listening” but don’t want to actually listen to people. It’s a dog-and-pony show.

If they cared about “listening” all they need is to look at elections, at polls, at newspapers.

    Instead they listen to Rush.

  5. raynman says:

It only makes sense. Why would someone wanting to be a national political party want to listen to people across the nation?

Gee, Rush, the last time I heard that a party needed to ‘teach’ its members (and society) how to think was in Moscow in the 50’s. One party, one line, follow or else.

Apart from that, this is why the Repugs are so marginalized and shrinking fast. They all keep talking about staying in touch with their ‘base’, but that just means listening to what Rush says. They keep crying about our heading for a dictatorship, but are really the ones pushing us into one. I seriously doubt there’s ten percent of Americans that want Rush in any kind of power.

Poor Cantor. He just doesn’t get it does he? People don’t like Limbaugh. Young people, women, gays and lesbians, can’t stand him. He appeals only to white guys who blame everyone else for their own failures. Why blame yourself when you can blame a Hispanic or Straw Man? Just listening to Pence yesterday on ‘Hardball’ was disgusting. He just couldn’t admit he believed in evolution. He was that much of a coward. I thought the repugs were the Party of Balls?

In both cases they use scare tactics in order to prove their point:

In both cases they represented the extreme far right of the Republican Party.

How do Cantor and the rest of the sheep look at their self in the mirror and still think they are in charge.

  44. Purple State says:

Look, the RNC has trapped itself in its own descriptions. They have to stop calling it a “listening tour” or a “teaching tour”.

A “listening tour” provides the idea that the GOP is out of ideas and that they need to gain seeds of thought by going to Americans and asking for help in identifying what is wrong with the system. It shows that the current GOP has no feedback and will have to examine those grievances to construct an answer.

A “teaching tour” provides the idea that the GOP knows what is right and that they are prepared to tell the public what to do. This might be closer to what they need, but does the public really need reprogramming? They are the ones who should be telling the GOP what to do, not the other way around.

The GOP needs to play the role of the student and the teacher, the conversation starter and the listener, for this tour to be successful. Frankly, I wonder just how effective it could be.

  45. RantingTommy says:

    ConservativeForProgress Says:

A Teaching Tour? Well yes, that’s it! That’s just what America needs. It was very effective back in 1955 during the ‘National Council for A New China’…oops, I mean the Cultural Revolution and it’s ‘re-education’ program.

‘The National Council for A New America’? What a joke! Note to Cantor, Bush, Romney, and the rest of the reich-wingers… IT ALREADY IS A NEW AMERICA!!! IT BECAME A NEW AMERICA LAST NOVEMBER!!! You might as well call yourselves the ‘CIRQUE DU GOOSESTEP TO OBLIVION’!!!

Not only is the Cirque incredibly entertaining; but as long as Rush remains their ringleader, Democrats will continue winning elections! KEEP TALKING RUSH, PLEASE!

The only way to re-brand the GOP is to extract the arrogance, ignorance, obstinance, and hate; but then nothing would remain needing re-branding. So, it’s plain- the GOP must destroy itself to save itself; simple!

I look back, and I see my gloating, trash-talking opponent has gotten hopelessly entangled in the barbed wire obstacle. Watching him flail around like a gill-netted fish is rather hilarious, but at the same time I feel some compassion for the trouble he’s experiencing.

So I yell over to him with some suggestions on how he might disentangle himself and get back on track. He yells back at me to go to h*ll, that he will win the race doing just what he’s doing, and that he hopes I fail.

I shrug my shoulders and go back to focusing on my race and my goal — leaving him behind in my dust.

And this is what we need to do. We need to focus on our goal of cleaning up the mess in this country and making it a better place. The Republicans are hopelessly ensnared in a trap of their own making, but they don’t want to listen to any suggestions on how to disentangle themselves (step one — quit marching to Limbaugh). Yes, we will be entertained by the spectacle. But we mustn’t allow it to distract us, nor should we allow ourselves to get sucked into it.

While I’m sure cowardice is a factor, the biggest reason is that the POTUS doesn’t make as much money.

  91. Jim Wolf359 says:

The GOP remakes itself in the image of the intolerant hate radio king by the day.

  92. glogrrl says:

Rethuglicans continue to demonstrate their spinelessness in the face of the biggest schoolyard bully on the planet……what miserable cowards they all are. And Limpbauh is an oozing boil on the face of the Rethuglican party. A few more instances like this, and they will be wandering in the wilderness for 40 years.

  93. Doodlebug Shayne says:

It never even occurs to Scarborough and Cantor that maybe they’re the two who don’t get it. Of course Scarborough believes he taught the Wright brothers how to fly.

You mean Morning Joe doesn’t put the sun in the sky every morning…?

    I’m so disillusioned…

  95. RantingTommy says:

It makes ya wonder if the Democrats are secretly paying Rush to force the Republicans to continue to cling to their failed ideology, therefore keeping the Republicans marginalized for the foreseeable future.

  96. spring heeled jack says:

The leader of the Republican party and fierce proponent of teaching dropped out of Southeast Missouri State University after two semesters. His mother attested to the fact that he failed every class, even modern ballroom dancing.

  97. Hoodathunktick says:

Oh please, don’t any one tell Crazy Michelle her party is talking about re-education tours.

  98. spring heeled jack says:

At least Casey Kasem graduated from Wayne State University.

  99. Game of Life says:

CANTOR: Listen, John, I think there is a lot of blame to go around.

    John who?

Keep it up repugger. your widdle club is becoming the club of oxy-morans.

  100. spring heeled jack says:

Hell, Howard Stern graduated from Boston University with a 3.8 GPA. The dean of the shock jocks, if you will.

  101. fergus says:

And a great, big set of shiny, red wax lips is awarded to Kiss-Ass Cantor. Put them in your mouth and apply them directly to Rush’s big, fat, sweaty asscrack. Gotta love them repugs, going down on Rush like lemmings over a cliff.

  102. Game of Life says:

So we’ve got to go out and, again, reconnect and make sure that our policy prescriptions are relevant to the challenges that people in the Northeast are facing, to the challenges that educated, affluent families are facing, as well as those much more challenged in the inner cities and rural areas of our country.

I’m glad eric is worrying about the rich, his priorities are in order. Who would want this club of NO-commonsense?

  103. Doodlebug Shayne says:

    Zooey Says:

You mean Morning Joe doesn’t put the sun in the sky every morning…?

    I’m so disillusioned..

Oh he does, just ask him.

  104. Doodlebug Shayne says:

    Hoodathunktick Says:

Oh please, don’t any one tell Crazy Michelle her party is talking about re-education tours.

It would make her head assplode. Is that a bad thing?

  105. spring heeled jack says:

Zooey, Joe doesn’t put the sun in the sky, but he does put the interns in the ground.

  106. fergus says:

Is anybody keeping score on the repugs Ass-Kissing tournament? I can’t keep track of who has played and who’s on the bench, ready to get into the game.

  107. grover nerdkissed says:

    ha ha, whatta tool.

  108. Art says:

If the National Council for a New America is truly a listening tour, then why didn’t the news clips of their pizza party show any of them “listening”?
All of the talking seen in the coverage was done by the leaders of the council.
Where is the footage of them getting dressed down by the attendees?
Where is the outrage from their constituents about how screwed up the party seems to be?
Don’t tell me its not out there.

  109. LibertyLover says:

More and more I am beginning to think that the Republican party is made up of a bunch of yo-yos. The way they keep getting all strung out and have to be rolled back in. And Rush Limbaugh is holding the string.

“Around the world” or “walk the dog” anyone?

  110. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

Kantor is such a damn disaster the trolls won’t even show up to defend him…That says it all.

  111. oldgranny says:

First, I want to thank most of you for giving me some of the
best belly laughs I have had in a long time.
Second, please seriously consider some of 86’s comments.
The name-calling will get us nowhere. We must work hard to make sure the Obama agenda gets passed.
Arrogance and pride will take us the way of the Republicans.

  112. Druids Dream says:

I just got a cool Incredible Hulk yo-yo. I wonder if Rush will sign it.

  113. Exit Stage Left says:

    Zooey Says:
I wonder what it feels like for a man’s balls to retract into his abdominal cavity?
    Let’s ask Cantor…

Wouldn’t that require the assumption he had any balls to begin with?

  114. shoeless says:

    ConservativeForProgress Says:
    ——————————————————————————–

Rush is not the leader of the Republican party.

You better not let him hear you say that. You’ve seen what happens then.

  115. shoeless says:

    ConservativeForProgress Says:
    ——————————————————————————–
The problem is that at the moment, the Republican party has no clear leader and no clear direction.

The problem for the last eight years was that Bush was your leader and the direction was down.

  116. Druids Dream says:

When they have these meetings is it at Chuck E. Cheese? Do they come out in that giant rat costume. Do they simulate waterboarding in the ballcrawl? Can you win tickets?

  117. ucsbclassics53 says:

    ConservativeForProgress Says:
    ——————————————————————————–

Rush is not the leader of the Republican party.

Better call Rush’s show and kiss his ass…

  118. ucsbclassics53 says:

    ConservativeForProgress Says:
Rush is not the leader of the Republican party. The problem is that at the moment, the Republican party has no clear leader and no clear direction.

I would disagree, it’s clear who the leader of the GOP is…because the Republicans keep on lining up to bow down to him and kiss his feet.

  119. tombaker says:

Rush is not the leader of the Republican party. The problem is that at the moment, the Republican party has no clear leader and no clear direction.

I wouldn’t call that a problem, I’d call it progress.

  120. barfly says:

the Republican party has no clear leader and no clear direction.

    Rush, and down.

  121. Wiz says:

The American people have had a real education about “conservative principles” over the last 8 years. We learned how to start a war, we did need to fight. We learned about foresaking responsibility in about a million ways. We learned about fearmongering. We learned about lies. We learned about violation of the constitution. We learned about political prosecutions. We learned about what happens when you put a smirking frat boy in charge that couldn’t get a job managing a car wash if it wasn’t for his Daddy. We also learned what happens when we elect a new leader and those same conservatives try to stop him from fixing the mess they left behind. We have learned all we need to know.

  122. kasinca says:

This makes sense to me now. I accidentally turned on Morning Joe (I refuse to watch Joe) and heard him ask if he could go back to the republicans a half hour earlier. He said I would like to tell the Republicans to stay off the stage until they get some ideas. He said they are only hurting themselves going on shows with no ideas to offer.

Joe is not as dumb as I thought he was…well most of the time his is.

  123. RantingTommy says:

    barfly Says:

the Republican party has no clear leader and no clear direction.

    Rush, and down.

Rush-bound and down, keep that party sucking
They gonna do what they say can’t be done
They got a long way to go, and a short time to get there
Cmon Rush Limbaugh, make your party ruuun

  124. barfly says:

Cmon Rush Limbaugh, make your party ruuun

Rush got the gold mine, republicans got the shaft…

  125. wolfsinger says:

Rush and his magic nose rings are locked deeply into the flesh of the Christian Values GOP.

Its been said before but can be said again…

Is it any wonder they’re called SHEEP?

Rush. Keeping watch over his flock by night, by day, by any means possible. Rush is the new GOP religion.

What an amazing thing to watch.

  126. shediac says:

    ConservativeForProgress Says:

“Rush is not the leader of the Republican party”.

Do we have to wait until tomorrow for a retraction on that statement?

  127. shediac says:

Let’s Draft Rush for President. Can’t you see it….

Limbaugh and Palin in 2012! Wow awesome!

  128. nobillary says:

Listening to all this talk about listening, Rush Limbaugh became incensed. He said that instead of taking cues from the American public, Republicans should fan out and spread their dogma through a “teaching tour.”

Gee, WHY would they even THINK about actually listening to the American people? After all, they have nothing at all to do with this discussion; they’re only the voters who elect them!

I can’t believe lily-livered cowards like Cantor, Pence, et al, actually choose to take their marching orders from a drug-addled TALK SHOW HOST! The simple fact they they choose to do so, only shows us that they are in NO position to lead this country.

No SANE person wants a Government Of The Rush, For The Rush and By The Rush. NOBODY!

  129. Rascalcat says:

Nice catch Think Progress. I was hoping someone from “Moring Joke” would call him on it, but sadly no. Oh well, Cantor the Coward will get what he deserves. Palin will suck what little wind there is out of this group’s sails and it will become the “Sarah Palin for President 2012 Early Tour.”

  130. southrnbelle says:

RUSH LIMBAUGH = THE PIED PIPER OF HAMLIN.

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY = THE CHILDREN OF HAMLIN BEING LED INTO THE SEA.

    KEEP TALKIN’ FATSO!!!!!!!!!!

  131. Marie says:

Rush Limbaugh fired back at Colin Powell for his critical comments earlier this week, saying Wednesday that the former secretary of state should join the Democratic Party.

  132. Constant Weader says:

Once again, Amanda deserves a medal for listening to these guys, but she has produced a piece that for the umpteenth time shows how Unintentionally, Grossly Hilarious these Rushboot-lickers are. The party of UGH!

    The Constant Weader at http://www.RealityChex.com

  133. lebowski says:

I posted on this on my site:

    http://blahgblog.wordpress.com/

It reminds me of a joke that was supposedly circulating in the Soviet Union before it disappeared before our eyes: Gorbachev, addressing a rally of the party faithful, declares “Comrades, when I became the premier, our nation stood on the brink of an unfathomable abyss. Since then, thanks to my vision and dedication, we have taken a bold step forward.”

  134. aquarius2 says:

Eric Cantor is a guy I totally despise. I think the most descriptive word is prick. He reminds of a boss who knows nothing but takes all the credit and he reminds of Eddie Haskell on Leave it to Beaver.

Cantor is nothing but a whiny coward who not even stand up for what he believes.

  135. researcher says:

the demos have to love this

rush in control of the repub party.

and to think all those americans lined up to vote for reagan economics

    tax cuts anyone

    how about free trade

    lessons learned the hard way

but then that is how we humans learn most of our lessons

    the hard way

the end result: bye bye middle class

hello have mores and have nots society in america.

    oh the fruits of capitalism

the rich get richer and here comes the gated communities and children being kidnapped for money from the rich.

go to south america to see the future of america.

  136. liberal says:

Conservative principles kill people and rob people of income at the workplace due to extreme cheap labor ideology.

Oh and the crash of the economy did not happen in hot potato format as Mitt Romney said. The Republiklan party for the last 29 years with their antiregulation and antiworker and antipoor people ideology built this house of cards which fell. The Republiklan party deserves most of theblame for the second greatest depression.

  137. lebowski says:

when did limbaugh, hannity, beck, o’reilly and all their acolytes actually listen to someone who didn’t already agree with them one hundred percent in the first place.

some conservatives and republicans will actually listen to opposing or just different views and respond by engaging the other person and trying to persuade and even, on occasion, will even be open to being persuaded themselves. or at least open to not demonizing someone who doesn’t believe exactly as they do.

but so many seem not only unwilling but somehow fundamentally unable to hear and really listen to different perspectives. this is true of some on the left and in the middle as well of course. but it seems to be a trait particularly rampant on the right.

it’s like the conservative geniuses from the OSU study who actually think colbert is making fun of liberals and progressives…

please check out my site at http://blahgblog.wordpress.com/

  138. kennethetucker says:

Cantor: “PLEASE back that big sweaty ‘ole zit covered ass up so I can give it a great BIG smooch, Rush (Ocy) LimpBalls!”

Rush: “TeaBag my sh*t Jew boy.”

    Cantor: “Ja, mein Führer!”

  139. labman57 says:

Every time an elected official in the GOP discusses the irrelevance of Rush “to judgement” Limbaugh, it plays like a well-known movie:

    Welcome to Groundhog Day.

  140. Lora says:

    To Hoodathunktick,
A parallel example still exists in North Korea, where everyone must pledge allegiance (and even willingness to starve) to their “Dear Leader.”

    Hoodathunktick Says:
Gee, Rush, the last time I heard that a party needed to ‘teach’ its members (and society) how to think was in Moscow in the 50’s. One party, one line, follow or else.

  141. Rugby Reader says:

    RIP GOP! Good riddance…

  142. rightwing-leftwing says:

What? I can’t hear ya! I’ve got a Rush Limbaugh in my ear!

  143. irnhead290 says:

Guess it wasn’t a joke. GOP does stand for Grand Old Poligizers.

  144. skyreader7 says:

Wow! What a party. They let a radio talk show host bully them into irrelevance. Why don’t they declare Rush the Emperor and they can tithe him as I don’t think $400 million is enough for his ego. Maybe they can bathe his feet in oxygenated water and anoint his little toes with oil of Olay.
