Graham: ‘If we’re going to let the bloggers run the country, then the country’s best days are behind us.’

grahamAfter it was announced earlier this week that Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) would replace Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) as the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, bloggers, including ThinkProgress, noted that Sessions had a record of racial insensitivity that stopped his appointment to the federal bench in 1986. Now, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is hitting back at the blogs:

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Republicans would fight back hard if Democrats or liberal groups try to make the Supreme Court confirmation process about Sessions’ record, rather than about Obama’s nominee to replace Justice David Souter.

“If people try to go down that road, it’ll blow up in their face, because Jeff is a good guy,” Graham said. “My hope is that our Democratic colleagues — if you start listening to the bloggers — if we’re going to let the bloggers run the country, then the country’s best days are behind us.”

If bloggers ran the country, we probably wouldn’t be mired in Iraq right now, and I’m betting we’d have a much smaller national debt.

  3. ralph the wonder locust says:

Yeah, Lindsay. much better to let a talk radio host run the country. Or at least your party.

    There, that’s more honest.

LG is marginally illiterate. Every time he speaks,my stomach turns. We should not waste any time attempting logical discourse in his case. You would do better arguing with a fence post. Sessions is a dirtbag of dubious if any merit, and Graham qualifies frequenty to be the dirt.

  13. Pennsylvanianne says:

Newsflash to Sen. Graham: Bloggers are the people of the United States. Are you saying that “if you let the people of the United States run this country, then the country’s best days are behind us.” Not for a country supposedly “of the people, by the people and for the people.” Previously, voters let a bunch of GOP numbskulls run the country, and look where that got us? Plunged into unimaginable debt, mired in two wars, and torn apart by the likes of hate jock Rushbo.
I think the Democrats have been listening to bloggers, Sen. Graham. That’s how they defeated your colleagues and why they are now in the majority in Congress.

Other regimes exercised more subtle power to ensure media orthodoxy. Methods included the control of licensing and access to resources, economic pressure, appeals to patriotism, and implied threats. The leaders of the mass media were often politically compatible with the power elite. The result was usually success in keeping the general public unaware of the regimes’ excesses.

  16. Tired of being lied to says:

Well, I’ve seen how the Republicans have run it (and would still run it if they had the power), and I think I’m wiling to take that chance.

More importantly Lindsey, if you are implying that open dialogue, from a variety of citizens, given without fear of reprisal, offered under the privileges and protections of the First Amendment, constitutes “bad days ahead,” then you don’t know your U.S. history very well.

And thank God I still have the right to say what I just said in the spirit of Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams.

  17. TXProgressive says:

So we should ignore the facts about mr sessions to keep queen lindsey happy? Bloggers are about the only media related folks that will bother to report the truth like this.

  18. Chris LeJeune says:

Wait a second – Didn’t they attribute the Sessions appointment to groups like Redstate, LittleGreenFootballs, Malkin, Drudge, etc.?

His reasoning about Sessions being a GOOD GUY and we bloggers better not derail Sessions because it will BLOW UP IN OUR FACES. What exactly is going to blow up in bloggers faces? Air, hand grenade, words, WHAT, WHAT? I’m shakin in my boots!

  23. Bobwurst says:

Lindsey Graham, Don’t be afraid. It’s OK. We’re not here to hurt you.

However, if bloggers where really running this country, we’d have some MAJOR issues:

    Health care for all
    No War
    Low taxes
    Free speech (duu!)
    No teen pregnancy
The war on drugs would be won
    Global warming would end

Which means Graham basically said, “My hope is that our Democratic colleagues — if you start listening to the American people — if we’re going to let the American people run the country, then the country’s best days are behind us.”

Unfortunately for Graham and Sessions, Democrats DO listen to the people. And Republicans listen to Limbaugh. I think that explains why the Dems are in power.

Oh, welfare Queen Graham is just miffed that the bloggers are calling him out of his imbecilic comments and the media are running like gerbils to print the bloggers’ comments or buzz around the internet.

Let’s reverse Graham’s comment: If we’re going to let the Party of No run this country, its time for this country to look for another planet to move to.

  44. Purple State says:

I have a feeling that Sen. Graham has finally come to the reality that print journalism is practically dead. Any Joe Six-Pack can have his or her blog to rail on the inadequacies of politics. He’s probably distraught that the Internet is allowing the voices of people who haven’t been taught in the arts of the “five W’s” like every good journalist should be taught.

Here’s the rub, though; we progressives aren’t the only ones that are able to access the Internet. Anyone can put their two cents on a blog.

Perhaps Graham is just listening to the influence of the GOP going down “a series of tubes”.

  45. iamwhoiam says:

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Republicans appear to be in self destruct mode. Questioning the Democratic party or its leadership is one thing. The outright audacity to question whether
“Joe citizen” has the right to know the facts and voice an opinion
is unnerving. These Republicans are fascists and do not understand or appreciate the Democracy we have been given. The Republican leadership might want to rethink their actions and their rhetoric because I’m not amused Mr. Graham.

Did you hear Rush Limbaugh say: “When we say we have to listen to the American people, we are pandering to them.”

  69. hormiga brava chavez says:

What the f*&k! And this BS coming from Graham who’s boss is Limbaugh – the head of the GOP!? We have every right to know the truth about the people we elect to public office. 90. SnoBird says:

    Senator Graham,

With all due resprct . . . biggotry is so passe. The half of th country that is female is better educated than the half that is male. Of that half, you have less than a 20 percent per capita margin in your state.

Which probably explains how the Klux keep voting you into office.

You come from the land of the scary old guys in pointy hats . . .get real. Latinos will account for about half of this country’s population within a decade. America consists of Asians, Latinos, people of all races and religions, intelligent well educated women . . .

No, only a white, racist, illiterate can adequately represent American values?

You are so wrong. You are what you advocate. What’s up with the people of South Carolina? Boot this fool.

FYI, bloggers are Americans. Some of us are your constituents . . . but not for long.

  91. mamazboy says:

Miss Graham really needs to just hush. The more she complains, the more attention will be paid to her sexual orientation. My question is, why wasn’t Lindsey outed by Kirby Dick in his upcoming expose of gay Republican closet queens, Outrage (in limited release starting May 8).

Why would she have a problem with the other aspects of the “internets”?

  94. Robt says:

    Hey Lindsey!!!!!!!

Bloggers are legal voting Americans and should have representation equal to the wealthy and corporations that bribe you to vote against your state and Americans alike, interests……………………..

  95. Robt says:

Just a couple of points from this paragraph.

“If people try to go down that road, it’ll blow up in their face, because Jeff is a good guy,” Graham said. “My hope is that our Democratic colleagues — if you start listening to the bloggers — if we’re going to let the bloggers run the country, then the country’s best days are behind us.”

    - Graham says Jeff is a good guy. But no one says Graham is a good guy and should be trusted. Where is Graham’s credibility after his false mean spirited attacks during the Bush years and the presidential campaign?

As far as going down a road and blowing up? Lindsey is already spent. There has been nNO good will by Lindsey. And he should look in the GOP’s front lawn of their little party Pup tent to confront his affliction with Rush Limbaugh and the GOP.

  96. jennyaxe says:

A Swedish blogger put it very well recently – “asking if bloggers have any power is the same thing as asking if citizens have any power”. Whenever anyone speaks of “the blogosphere” or “bloggers” as a group, it should be read to mean “citizens” or “people”.

In effect, what Graham is saying is that “if we’re going to let the people run this country, then the country’s best days are behind us”. Which is probably what he believes.

  97. DICKERSON3870 says:

    LINDSEY: “Whatever you desire.” (fleur-de-lis)

  99. Wiz says:

What Lindsey meant to say was: “if we’re going to let the bloggers run the country, then the Republican’s best days are behind us.” The invention of a new media, the internet, has produced so many sources of information and discussion, that lies can no longer live without exposure. This is what Lindsey is so bummed about.

  100. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

Sessions is a life-long bigot. He has voted against minority and women’s rights his entire political career. Is Lindsey getting upset that Sessions aversion to brown-skinned people and it’s probable influence on his pre-obstruction of any nominee that President Obama may put forth is being discussed on the inter tubes? Will Lindsey and Boner have a good cry over bloggers influence? Do you mean this guy:

Graham’s problem is that his corporate clients are not represented by the blogs making the blogs the problem in his eyes. Blogs represent people, including the conservative blogs. Graham just doesn’t seem to like the people. Well, times are changing and Graham either needs to get with or he will become a footnote in history. And a small footnote it will be.

  103. smidget says:

No, Senator, our country’s best days are behind us because of out-of-touch regressive individuals like yourself who just can’t accept that not everyone is a Jesus-freak who thinks that white men are superior simply because they are white men.

We’re tired of where you’re “leading” us, and we’re tired of failing to live up to our potential because of catering to the religious right and big corporations. WE’RE taking our country back, and you can either get on board or get left behind.

    Slightly OT: A Cautionary Tale

A friend of mine worked in the cable industry since the mid 80’s. He told me that during much of that time, local governing bodies responsible for cable company operating guidelines understood that by choosing a cable monopoly, that same cable company had to be accountable to them. Enter “Public Access” cable channels where everyday people could create and insert their programs, causes and ideas into the basic “must carry” cable service. Most of what became of public access was pure crap. That fact is undeniable. But, many “community activists” and a pool of journalism students and freelancers took the opportunity presented and ran with it. This resulted in an early electronic age “grass roots” community watch that shed light on the very real shenanigans of local aldermen, counsel women, Mayors and city administrators across the country. That’s the history. The cautionary part is this:

Within a few short years, politicians of All Stripes began to realize that what started out as well intentioned, “Public Access” for the good of the community, soon became an unwelcome and all to often festering thorn in the sides of the same politicians who made “Public Access” a reality in the first place. The results? Public Access is being dropped as a requirement. No longer to provide a window into dodgy dealings by local, regional and state politicos.

The point is… that today’s internet like cable, is a service we have to subscribe to. And like cable in the days of mandatory Public Access, an un-metered and open forum for diverse opinions and ideas where the grass roots can take hold and make change despite the overwhelming deluge of corporate content.

And like cable’s Public Access, much of the internet is crap. Yet, because of the netroots and bloggers, the internet has obviously become a major thorn in the side of dodgy politicians at the highest level of government nationwide and most importantly, because of that fact, politicians of every stripe want that thorn to go away! That means metering the internet. Changing the internet forever in the same way the loss of Public Access has changed cable forever. For the worse. We can not allow that to happen…again. Cable Public Access is the warning bell and we have to listen. Republican, Democrat or Independent, we must take a stand to insure that the internet stands as it is. An un-metered forum for free ideas to flow. Bloggers unite because if we are pissing off the likes of Lindsey Graham, then we are truly doing something right.

  107. NOLIESPLEASE says:

With the advent of blogging the political landscape has changed for good!!! Lies can be proven wrong within minutes, people can exchange ideas rappedly, and Government can monitory the reaction of it’s policies as quick as they announce the policy.

This is what the Repugs are affraid of….being challanged at every turn by the majority. The Repugs are behind in there thinking, policies, technoligy with respect to the internet.

Politics will never be the same…and the country will only improve as we share ideas, assemble action, and stay in touch with our fellow citizen, not just of our country but the world citizens.

I remember the yenta Lindsay Graham on fox every night salivating for impeachment [sad puppy] . .

Why are republicans AFRAID of bloggers?

Lindsay might want to keep in mind that bloggers vote and they’re the voice of the American people, as evidenced on Nov. 4, 2008 . .

  115. drunkfoulmouthfiltybeast says:

Graham, and others, have been, under the cover of darkness, authoring ways to regulate the internet, WHAT? They work so hard at deregutation! Oh, I know, they want make sure that their real ulterior motives remain unpublished until they have already occurred. They want their true values, true corruption, true colors and their true lies go unnoticed and one way is to shut down the internet. These guys really need the unbought off F.B.I. on their ass and I wouldn’t mind to see a few lobbyist, i.e. Grover Norquist, Charley Black and others to numerious to mention, and ultimately, to feel the warmth of an 8×12 with bars protecting them the harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. We wouldn’t want to harm their precious little bodies.

Come on out of the closet, Little Linda, you chihuahua-faced right wing fairy!

lindsey should take off the mascara and eyeliner before trying to talk tough.

    Way to be progressive…

  118. Don't Be A Jackass says:

Bloggers will never have any substantial political influence on the Democrats in office. Blogging exists because most of the ideas shared on websites such as this one are so asinine that they have nowhere else to reside. If the ideas in the Blogger’s world were so good, and conservative talk radio ideas are irrelevant and outdated, don’t you think that radio stations would would abide at least some of these ideas? The answer is NO. The radio station would loose ratings and money and be forced out of business. However at that point there could be hope for liberals on the radio, but it would have to be in the form of a bailout or government takeover.
