Limbaugh Responds To Powell: He Needs To ‘Close The Loop And Become A Democrat’

On Monday, former Secretary of State Colin Powell said that he believed the Republican party is in “deep trouble,” “getting smaller,” and being led by polarizing figures like Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) and Rush Limbaugh. Powell said further that the party must realize that “Americans do want to pay taxes for services.” Of Limbaugh specifically, Powell said, “I think what Rush does as an entertainer diminishes the party and intrudes or inserts into our public life a kind of nastiness that we would be better to do without.”

Today on his radio show, Limbaugh responded by calling Powell “just another liberal.” Limbaugh said Powell should “close the loop” and leave the Republican party instead of “claiming” to be interested in reforming it. Additionally, Limbaugh reiterated his previous claim that Powell endorsed Obama only because of his race:

LIMBAUGH: [Powell] is out there saying I am killing the republican party while he endorsed and voted for Obama. … He’s just mad at me because I’m the one person in the country who had the guts to explain his endorsement of Obama. It was purely and solely based on race! There can be no other explanation for it. What Colin Powell needs to do is close the loop and become a Democrat instead of claiming to be a Republican interested in reforming the Republican party.

Limbaugh concluded, “The only reason to endorse Obama is race. I don’t think Powell thought he could get away without with not endorsing Obama. … So I don’t care.” Watch it:

Greg Sargent concludes, “The optics of this one are not good.” Indeed, congressional Republicans are working extremely hard to ensure their rebranding effort is tailored to Limbaugh’s liking. Will they spoil their efforts by denouncing Limbaugh’s latest rant?

Go, Rush, GO! Drive the GOP further into the ditch!

Then blame the ditch on the liberals.

  2. Chris LeJeune says:

I agree with Limbaugh. Powell needs to switch over and become a democrat. So should Snowe, Collins, and anyone who doesn’t completely and fully agree with the direction of the republican party right now. The republican party needs less “moderates” and less “independents”. After all, judging from the last two elections, the republicans have plenty of votes on their side. They can afford to give some away.

  3. osage says:

REPUBLICANS ARE INCAPABLE OF LEARNING FROM THEIR OWN MISTAKES

In order to gain the political control they’ve enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and fiscal conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. They made a strategic decision to manipulate and exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional and vulnerable voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.

Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the devil they empowered and the karmic reality that they don’t have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and “advocate” the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party.

The survival of today’s shrinking Republican Party has become so dependent on extremism that they have no significant power left WITH or WITHOUT the support of America’s increasingly pernicious lunatic fringe.

The idiom “caught between the devil and the deep blue sea” is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. They are suffering the consequences of their treachery.

Their irresponsible propping up of George W. Bush cost them their credibility, and their disgraceful and shameless licking of Rush Limbaugh’s storm trooper boots is costing them their viability.

  4. stjack says:

um, why would powell want to become a democrat if the only reason he endorsed obama was race? doesn’t that suggest that ideologically powell must be a conservative, subject only to race loyalty?

oh, i wish conservatives understood the concept of logical fallacies. i really do.

  5. Chris LeJeune says:

Limbaugh concluded, “The only reason to endorse Obama is race.”

So, how does he reconcile that with the current RNC chairman?

Limbaugh is the real hero here. As a commander of the GOP Chicken Brigade he distinguished himself in Vietnam, The Gulf War and Star Wars. Rush is a great leader with enormous power, remember his drug deal? Rush and Sarah in 2012.

  11. misscoleopteramolly says:

Nice try, Powell. But the slow implosion continues. And at this point, so many Republicans are caught in Limbaugh’s tractor beam that the party really can’t be saved. The dittoheads have become so zombified that Rush pronouncements that sound absurd to a thinking person (such as suggesting you’re a liberal, or that you endorsed Obama solely because of race) get mindlessly absorbed without objection.

Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, and even Barry Goldwater are surely spinning in their graves.

And you? Your best bet is to jump ship. Save yourself.

  12. Above the Clouds says:

Another tough choice for the GOP: (1) Rush Limbaugh, or (2) common sense.

  13. stjack says:

    ralph the wonder locust Says:

yep. on the other hand, as spencer’s mom points out, powell still commands a great deal of respect from conservatives (and, for the record, from me too, UN claims notwithstanding). i wonder if powell will be the only conservative with the cajones to not kowtow to rush limbaugh. honestly, what would be his incentive? he’s not running for office.

  14. barfly says:

  16. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Someone out there needs to lie their way past Limbaugh’s screeners and when they get on ask him “What do you think about the fact that the Republicans have lost 4% of their members in the last month and are now at 21% of Americans”. I would love to hear his answer.

Even bad ol Arlen and Powell, maybe they can double date with Susan and Olympia.

We need a two party system. I don’t like the Republicans, and I don’t vote Republican. But I think it is unhealthy to allow the major counterweight to the Democratic Party to be operated by a bunch of brownshirts who are clamoring for a revolution. When a party is headed up by demagogues, the unstable among us may act in ways we cannot foresee. I think most Americans would be appalled by Limbaugh as the leadership of the Republican Party, but it is feasible. I imagine that the majority of the people of Germany were certain the crazies in the Nazi party would never achieve the dominance they did, either. I think it would be wise to support the more sane Republicans like Powell as they try to salvage their political ship.

  26. wiley says:

Powell has some demons, but I think he knows better than most what it means to be a black man in a position of power. He would be stupid to endorse an unqualified black man for president. Stupid isn’t one of his demons.

Why do you think Powell resigned from his position???? Because he liked bush????

  29. LibertyLover says:

The party of the big tent!!! Woohoo.

  30. Romartin16985 says:

Powell didn’t seem to have voiced much dissent when serving under President Bush. Does seem rather convenient now to agree with the party in power.

The strong differences between liberals and conservatives will only come more into focus as things continue, and the public will have a clearer choice.

Rush Limbaugh’s conservative views are more mainstream than some may believe. President Obama campaigned as a fiscal conservative, opposes same sex marriage, and said he would cut out wastefulness in our government and increase transparency. Sounds pretty conservative to me.

  31. PauLinDC says:

Man, I wish I had background in Psychology to discern what goes on in that vacuum between Rush’s ears. Rush’s body language has a familiarity that many of us – I certainly – recognize as that of the crazy, egocentric kid who has a completely misplaced sense of importance. It’s bad enough that he can’t make a rational, fact-based, logical arguement and that he assembles fantastic conclusions that aren’t supported by the data that he spouts. Since a 3 year old could intellectually refute his arguments, I just have to marvel at the anthropological train wreck that is Rush.

  32. foolme1ns says:

While republicans are trying desperately to get their groove back, and some semblance of a national status, their defacto leader, their “boss”, keeps inviting people to leave their “big tent”. Anyone who isn’t marching in lock step to Limbaugh’s tune, is no longer welcome in what’s left of their party. To be quite honest, it isn’t much of a party anymore. Just a small angry mob, tearing each other apart.

Rush is killing the republican party, but they can’t stop him because they are spending all of their time kissing his fat ass.

  33. KaneJeeves says:

Keep’r going Rush! The more you speak, the better liberals do.

  34. PauLinDC says:

thank you, bilbo… i was too busy yesterday to follow the stories…

  36. Purple State says:

What Rush (and all of humanity, for that matter) needs to know is that, unless we can somehow develop a perfect technology that can read the mind, no one but Powell himself will know the real reason why he supported Obama. Limbaugh is not a mind reader, or else he would know that most of America stands against his opinions.

Rush is starting to turn into his own Shel Silverstein poem–soon he will have to feed off of himself, because there will be no one left, no one left, no one left to alienate.

  37. SP Biloxi says:

“Limbaugh Responds To Powell: He Needs To ‘Close The Loop And Become A Democrat’”

The leader of the GOP party has spoken. El Rushbo doesn’t need an office at the RNC. His office is his radio show desk. And his foot soldiers to spread the word of the Grand Poobah’s message is the GOP party. Mike Steele is nothing but a puppet and mouthpiece for the GOP and for El Rushbo. It is a matter of time to when Mike will be booted as the RNC Chairman.

This was TERRIFIC AND SO TRUE. On the one hand, the congressional R’s have been busting butt trying to have NORMAL people believe that they are changing from the inside out [what a crock], while on the other hand, LimpBalls is ranting and mixing it up about probably the only R left with a tiny bit of credibility, and now it’s time to see who will win. Will it be the R’s speaking out saying that Fatboy does NOT speak for them – in which case Fattie will be p*ssed and will jump on their case, broadcast their names, etc? On will it be Fatboy, whom the R’s will cow tow to and lose the NORMAL people who might be thinking they will switch parties?

Actually, I live in Utah (the reddest of the red states) and I would agree on both accounts. Rush is much further right wing than any of my right wing friends. He is not mainstream, even in a far right state.

As for relevance, it is not for the media to decide. Te Miss USA candidate from California is reported on frequently, but she is completely irrelevant. At the same time General Petraeus is seldom in the news at all, but he is very relevant.

And if Rush drives out highly respected members of the party, and folks who respect them follow, what will happen to the repubs ?

  53. dasm says:

Limbaugh concluded, “The only reason to endorse Obama is race.”

Or maybe you might endorse Obama due to his intelligence, empathy, statesmanship, understanding, desire to promote a positive image of the U.S. globally, genuine family values, etc,– things Limbaugh will never have, nor even understand, apparently– Rush just continues to spew hatred, racism, & division. He is more anti-American than anyone in the country that I can think of.

The “good governance” agreement revives checks and balances Mr. Steele resisted implementing for RNC contracts, fees for legal work and other expenditures that were not renewed after the 2008 presidential nominating contest.

“We need a two party system.”
    – Yes, we do. When one party gets to be powerful to the point of being untouchable, it becomes corrupt. And no party is immune to this effect, no matter how noble their ideology in the beginning.

“I don’t like the Republicans, and I don’t vote Republican. But I think it is unhealthy to allow the major counterweight to the Democratic Party to be operated by a bunch of brownshirts who are clamoring for a revolution.”
    – Agreed. Hopefully, the brownshirts shrink into irrelevance and get replaced by a new counterweight party before the whole system turns into a crapfest. But it doesn’t always turn out that way, so we need to keep a healthy degree of concern.

“When a party is headed up by demagogues, the unstable among us may act in ways we cannot foresee.”
    – That’s already starting. Think of Timothy McVeigh and Eric Rudolph. Think of the guy who shot up a church after having his mind fed by books written by Savage, Hannity, and O’Reilly. Think of the guy in Pittsburgh who shot and killed police officers because he thought his guns were going to get taken away. And the far right just feeds more and more of this paranoia. There will be more violence instigated by the far right vitriol, but the talking heads will always claim innocence.

“I think most Americans would be appalled by Limbaugh as the leadership of the Republican Party, but it is feasible.”
    – Feasible? It’s already a fait accompli. Elected Republicans are getting their marching orders from Limbaugh right now. And there ARE many Americans who are appalled by this, which is why the GOP is shrinking.

“I imagine that the majority of the people of Germany were certain the crazies in the Nazi party would never achieve the dominance they did, either.”
    – This should be a lesson learned for all of us. Even the “la-la-la-I-don’t-hear-you” folks. I hope calmer heads prevail and we never come to this. But it bears watching.

“I think it would be wise to support the more sane Republicans like Powell as they try to salvage their political ship.”
    – I wish I could share your optimism, but I really think the ship is beyond saving. Unless the GOP gets a strong charismatic leader whose values are consistent and who will fearlessly stand up to entertainers posing as party leaders.

How many of you have ever listened to Rush Limbaugh for awhile to really get to know his positions? Until then, I don’t think you can fairly comment on him.

Anyway, I don’t know why you all care. He really doesn’t matter…the Dems have full control and can do whatever they want.

The Dems ARE the establishment now.

  83. pete says:

We care what Lush Rimjob is saying because it makes crazy people do things like shooting up churches.

BTW. He’s a pathological liar, bigot, and all-around shitstain. He’s bad for our country.

  84. DeweyGland says:

I think Rush needs to get A/C or at least a fan blowing at his desk. His constant picking at and removal of his polyester shirt from his sticky, sweaty chest is repulsive. What a clown!

  85. flight says:

The Republicans keep bringing up the race issue. What group of people are they pandering? If they keep whittling away at their base for only true, pure conservatives, what are Republicans going to be left with?
A real creepy thought, isn’t it.

  86. kasinca says:

There is nothing conservative about right wing extemism. You are talking about the KKK wing of the party (southern strategy redstaters) and the religious right wingnuts who think that only abortion and gays, and then the brain washed no taxes and all war morons. The party is over.

  87. lalala says:

I guess that explains all the white generals who supported Obama…

  88. Art says:

Rush doesn’t realize that the Democratic Party tent is big enough to accomodate most Republicans.
Rush doesn’t realize that most Democrats would welcome most Republicans.
Rush doesn’t realize this, because he cannot fathom being so open and accepting. Because the Republicans would never do it.

  89. DeweyGland says:

kasinca, Like your comment – you hit the nail on the head. I also agree with or , at least, like the term used by Stephanie Miller (Air America Radio) who calls it the “Deliverance” Wing of the Repub party…

  90. Buckie Boy says:

Anyone who doesn’t have any morals or ethics should join the Republican party.

Oh wait, they already have…my bad.

  91. obama-biden2009 says:

Watch out Rush, Powell is one powerful Black Man who you probably think is very “angry” who can and will kick your swine flu as* you pig face drug and woman abuser!

The GOP performs for this fool? I love every minute of it, him and Sarah Palien!

    Thanks, but No Thanks!!!

  92. DeweyGland says:

Maybe Rush is really a Liberal, just not as good as pulling off satire as Stephen Colbert…??????

  93. katy says:

    Live4Liberty – get real…

limpbone has a $400 million contract… don’t need to listen to know his “positions”…

he has none… other than how anyone or anything can benefit HIM…

get real… he does not give a shit about you.

  94. tombaker says:

Does RL actually think a man of Powell’s caliber really gives a flyin frack what a man like RL has to say about ANYTHING!?!?

Talk about yer delusions of grandeur.

  95. Bozo The Neocootiebug says:

“Limbaugh concluded, “The only reason to endorse Obama is race. I don’t think Powell thought he could get away without with not endorsing Obama. … So I don’t care.”

then perhaps tub-o-lard will be able to answer this simple question,

if it was a question of race why didn’t kindasleezy rice stup up to the plate and endorse obama?

  96. ranus69 says:

I don’t think Powell should or will apologize.

It’s funny how these “tea-draggers” were complaining about Obama taking away their 1st amendment rights to protest (which we all know was a misnomer) and yet if anyone speaks out against fat ass Rush your immediately silence.

And the limbots don’t see the irony in that, they really are “stupid”?

    RUSH YOU WILL FAIL!!!

  97. Dirty Hippie says:

Rush Limbaugh; 1st in line in the Republican circular firing squad.

  98. kpaul says:

Rush’s arteries have to be working overtime these days…trust me, we’ll see the end of this gasbag. Tick-tock, tick-tock…

  99. neoconsrscum says:

    DeweyGland:

I guess it’s a side effect of massive OxyContin abuse- how many junkies LOSE THEIR HEARING over dope?

  100. neosopheus says:

I was channel surfing one night and came across Rush at a speaking engagement. He was hooting and hollering and pounding his fists, and getting all red in the face. Pretty soon the crowd was getting fired up too, and they began to grow louder, stomping their feet and getting real worked up. The louder Limpbaugh ranted and raved, the louder the crowd got. Then,… I realized that I was watching a special about gorillas on the Discovery Channel. Guess I should have known better, the gorilla was much smarter than Rush could ever hope to be.

  101. kassandrasduplex says:

Limbaugh’s days are numbered, can’t you feel it? Like Savanarola, they all eventually fall of their own hubris. His Nemesis approaches…

  102. Live4Liberty says:

    Katy-
I never really thought about whether or not Rush Limbaugh gives a shit about me, because it really doesn’t matter to me. I don’t need anyone to validate me.

As far as his $400 million contract, good for him! I don’t waste time envying others.

Only by listening to others can you have an informed disagreement with them.

  103. ralph the wonder locust says:

    Live4Liberty Says:

Only by listening to others can you have an informed disagreement with them.

I have on occasion listened to Rush, and I have to say, it’s not like he’s prone to real nuanced arguments, nor much varied in their ideological scope.

So the idea that you have to “listen to what Rush really says” to have a good idea of where he stands, strikes me as hyper-demanding and unnecessary.

  104. pete says:

I’ve listened to Lush. He’s so effing offensive that I am ashamed to acknowledge he’s even a human being.

  105. Live4Liberty says:

    Ralph-

There is little nuance and variance in Limbaugh’s views because he is an unabashed conservative. At least you know where you stand with Limbaugh, unlike the nuanced and variant idealogies you value.

Listening to someone before forming an opinion of them is hyper-demanding? Not doing so is intellectual laziness.

Which pretty much conforms to what I said.

Listening to someone before forming an opinion of them is hyper-demanding? Not doing so is intellectual laziness.

No. Insisting that others listen to them AFTER listening enough to form an opinion is hyper-demanding. As you acknowledge, “you know where you stand with Limbaugh”. The idea that continuing to pay close attention, once tat opinion is established will somehow bring illumination is ridiculous.

  107. Live4Liberty says:

    Ralph-

You are certainly free to hold your opinions, as I do. I just think it’s impossible to get a good feel of someone’s thoughts on a broad range of topics in a short amount of time.

Nevertheless, I don’t understand the bashing of Rush Limbaugh on here. What’s to fear? He has no power beyond voicing his opinions over a radio signal.

Your side is in charge and can do whatever it wants, despite conservative opposition. Why so much anger towards that opposition? Is the hope actually hype, but you’re afraid to admit it?

Either way, remember- dissent is patriotic. Hillary said so.

  108. diffrntdrummr says:

Go Rush Go!! It’s just a matter of time before he starts beating up on mom and apple pie. Then we will know to call in the professionals and put this waste of space out to pasture.I’m sooooo looking forward to that day.

  109. Romartin16985 says:

The left doesn’t want to hash out differences. They want to silence opposition.

    Yeah, go Rush go!

  110. researcher says:

    go rush

you are allowing americans to see the fruits of capitalism gone wild

of course americans still blame you and politicans and bankers and wall street and just about everything but the system.

but there is always hope americans will some day wake up to the reality of free for all capitalism as and economic model that creates haves and have nots. ie mostly have nots.

  111. Truthsayer says:

After several days of observing the intellect and reasoning of the comments by the majority of the contributors to this site, it is painfully obvious to me and other rational persons that the majority of you are trading your Obama Bucks (Welfare checks, student grants or other forms of government assistance) for 44oz. “Gut-Buster Liberal Kool-AID” drinks, and a big box of Soros Cookies!!

Gen. C. Powell (Ret.) served President Regan (a TRUE Conservative Republican) but never proclaimed his political membership; he did however support B. Hussein Obama, and the point that Mr. Limbaugh made during the campaign was that it must have been because he also was not white.

I find it interesting that so many of you purport to know what Rush has said, but I doubt very seriously that many of you, if any of you have ever listened to his program for any length of time.

Regurgitating the sound bites from the ultra- liberal press is akin to reading “Cliff Notes” and then acting as if you saw the movie, or read the book.

As to the 21%ers, I doubt that this is a real percentage. It is probably much lower. However, the number that can’t be verified by polling data is the number of Conservative Americans, who were once Democrats or Republicans.

The former Dems are now full blown socialists, and the Reps are now the “New Democrat Lite”. Either way the majority is fed-up with the entitlement system, government meddling in private business and spending the working people’s money with no regard to how it will cost us in the very near future.

Just remember that in order for the government to give someone something, it has to take it from someone else.

As for Mr. Limbaugh and Mr. Powel, who the hell really cares?

  112. miraclelurker says:

    A total racist!

  113. Robt says:

Limbaugh sounds like he needs to close the loop and commit himself to Belvue mental hospital.

    Nurse Ratchet, Nurse Ratchet??

  114. delafield says:

Every time Rush Limbaugh opens his mouth, he digs a deeper hole for the GOP.

    Go, Rush, go!!!

  115. Wiz says:

Everyday seems to bring another Republican spasm of a critically ill cardiac patient. Rush is like the escaped mental inmate who runs into the intensive care hospital room and yells at the patient, beats up the doctor, and tries to pull the plug. If Republicans want to save their patient they better speak up against Rush, without acting like a pharmicist who handed out the wrong pills. It is getting pretty late for the GOP and there doesn’t appear to be any psychologist who knows how to treat Rush’s mental illness.

  116. nanlichi says:

You want dissent? An honest debate? Then throw out some fcking ideas instead of just throwing rocks at the other side. Rush doesn’t trade in ideas or debate, he trades in hate and mockery and smearing shit on the walls to fire up the base.

But, the same way Bush’s War was the best recruiting tool for Al Qaeda, Rush’s bile is the best recruiting tool for the Democrats.

Hang in there pus-gut, you are doing great work for America.

  117. Chicano2nd says:

Porky closed the loop now he’s a full blown rascist! Period. End of story.

  118. pd says:

Why does Limbaugh keep tugging at his shirt? Is that some kind of nervous tic or are his evil secretions not compatible with the wearing of human clothes?

  119. joe cantwell says:

    ….

limbaugh is very popular with conservatives.

porno is very popular with conservatives.

    **

    “Yeah, go Rush go!”

was it good for you, romartin?

    :)

    ;0

  120. wolfsinger says:

The GOP change? Not bloody likely.

The GOP learn from their mistakes? Their actions prove that’s change that’s NOT gonna happen.

Speaking of “change”… Did you ever have one of those coins that got run over by a train? Flattened, deformed and forever worthless? Yet, you kept in your change jar anyway not knowing why and like a turd it always floated to the top of the change pile?

Rush and the GOP is kinda like that.

  121. Wannabekool says:

Oh oh oh oh. Has anyone thought about what to do should Der Leeder become ill and unable to carry on? They would have what is known as a rudderless ship. Floating wherever the waves and the tides take it. That’s what happens when you put all your bananas in one boat.

Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh. Someone forgot to think beyond the end of his nose.

No no no, it can’t be.

  122. ctcadguy says:

Rush is correct for a change.

  123. Romartin16985 says:

    Joe,

I’ve noticed that when all else fails, you seem to revert back to the subject of porno.

    Just sayin’…………..

  124. drunkfoulmouthfiltybeast says:

Rash LaRue Limpballs need to finish the last chapter of “How to become a Narcissist”, and DROP DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
