Hannity’s Two-Week Silence: Is He Ready To Admit Waterboarding Is Torture?

Mayor Hannity DebateOn April 22, Fox News’ Sean Hannity volunteered to be waterboarded after ardently defending the practice and excoriating President Obama for ending the technique. “Clearly this president has not done his homework, and it is putting each and every American at risk,” Hannity said about ending torture. Declaring he is “for enhanced interrogation,” Hannity said he would happily consent to being waterboarded as a fundraiser “for the troops’ families.”

However, two weeks later, Hannity has yet to mention the promise again — despite the offer from MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann to help Hannity raise funds by donating $1,000 for every second Hannity is waterboarded.

As Olbermann has explained, the point would not be to watch Hannity suffer. Rather, it would be to prove to him — and perhaps his viewers — that waterboarding is in fact “cruel, inhuman” torture — that it is what an adviser on terrorism to the departments of Homeland Security, Special Operations, and Intelligence called “slow-motion suffocation.”

Indeed, the 2005 torture memo written by Steven Bradbury required the CIA to have a tracheotomy kit on hand to revive a detainee who had effectively drowned:

[A] detainee could suffer spasms of the larynx that would prevent him from breathing even when the application of water is stopped and the detainee is returned to an upright position. In the event of such spasms, a qualified physician would immediately intervene to address the problem, and, if necessary, the intervening physician would perform a tracheotomy. …we are informed that the necessary emergency medical equipment is always present – although not visible to the detainee — during any application of the waterboard.

A footnote to the memo warns, “for reasons of physical fatigue or psychological resignation, the subject may simply give up, allowing excessive filling of the airways,” and “aggressive medical intervention” may be required to restore breathing. And yet Hannity continues to insist, “It’s not drowning.”

That’s what makes him a perfect Republican.

  5. hellinabucket says:

I don’t blame Hannity for not wanting to be waterboarded, but I do blame him for ignoring he said he would in the first place.

Waterboarding is torture and this country waterboarded. To allow Congress and this administration to ignore it is to be as bad as Hannity.

  6. Chuck Feney says:

Sean has self-volunteered to water torture himself. He got himself a neti pot, irrigated his nostrils and gave a false confession to make himself stop. He, also, reports that his sinus condition is much improved and recommends that the more water boarding of Americans there is, the less likely that America’s best days are behind her.

  7. conniptionfit says:

    A) Hannity is a coward
    B) Hannity is a liar
    C) If Hannity is so sure that he’d be able to withstand waterboarding, and that it wouldn’t be “torture” what makes him think that waterboarding is any more effective at securing information than just asking nicely?
Personally I would think that if a soft suburban white boy like Hannity can go through waterboarding without agreeing to sell his own mother for a crack whore, it would have to be totally unpersuasive for a real tough guy.

  8. nofltwlt says:

Hannity’s admission that waterboarding is torture does not absolve him from his promise to be waterboarded. KO should keep the countdown clock running on this one.

IF he ever mans up and puts Olberman’s where Hannity’s mouth is … I wonder how many times he’d have to be waterboarded before he admits that it really is torture.

    I’d guess once.

  14. Roket says:

It’s not that he’s afraid of waterboarding. He’s afraid of what he might say about that dead girl found in his office while being waterboarded. He has his precious career to think about, don’t cha know.

  15. dogjudge says:

First, I’m a huge supporter of the President.

That being said, this is all a mute point.

It appears that President Obama and Attorney General Holder have decided NOT to pursue anything against anyone.

Even if they went forward, committees from Conyers and Leahy aren’t going to do anything of any value.

America’s “high morals” got flushed down the toilet by the Bush administration and the stench has been ignored for eternity by a spineless Democratic party.

Thus proving once again that while Olberman does not want to see us interrogate known terrorists to save American lives, he wants to waterboard conservative talk show hosts. It’s no wonder Olberman’s ratings are a small fraction of Hannity’s and he is trying such a cheap ($1,000 a second — cheapskate) publicity stunt.

Olbermann wasn’t anywhere around when Hannity offered to be waterboarded for charity to prove it wasn’t torture. Keith just offered to help raise funds for the charity. Why don’t you try reading the article before spouting off.

  17. Purple State says:

See what happens when you drop the “I think” from “I think it’s not torture”?

The fact that a tracheotomy kit is by the tortured detainee during these instances gives me the funny feeling that is how the pundits are going to argue against this memo. It’s not “torture” if there is a way to revive the tortured, right?

No, it’s a way to revive the tortured so that your ass doesn’t face more severe charges.

  18. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

Sorry dogjudge the point is most definately NOT moot. Even if AG Holder and President Obama do not want to begin an investigation, the US is obligated under signed treaties to investigate even the POSSIBILITY that war crimes were commited. If we don’t, the international tribunals will begin. One way or another justice will be done.

BTW go Cheney yourself ConservativeForProgress. “Known terrorists”? How may I ask do you “know” that they are terrorists? Because they told you so after you tortured them? If they are so well known may I ask why neither one has faced a judge? Mr. Olbermann has expressed his opinion that if Hannity doesn’t believe that it is torture, has agreed to undergo waterboarding to prove it and then changes his little mind then he is either a liar or a hypocrite. So which is it? I vote both but then again I live in a fact-based world unlike FOX news people and their sicophantic admirers.

  19. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

    ConservativeForProgress Says: lying lies

Olberman did not start this – Hannity OFFERED to be waterboarded because he does not think it is torture. Olberman simply told him to put up or shut up.

Ratings make absolutely no difference. Just because a bunch of people agree to something, does not make it right or moral. History is full of such “common nonsense”: epilepsy as demonic possession, the sun circling the earth, making gold out of mercury, etc.

  20. Pennsylvanianne says:

    ConservativeForProgress @ 16:
Absolutely not true. I believe Olbermann would rather Hannity simple agreed that waterboarding is torture. But then, that admission would bring Hannity’s carefully constructed conservatism down like a house of cards. Olbermann did not dare Hannity to be waterboarded; Hannity agreed to do it in a conversation with Charles Grodin. Now, of course, Olbermann has the philosophical upper hand, no matter the ratings, with Keith’s constant reminders to Hannity of this agreement, which he has not fulfilled. Perhaps Hannity remembers the article conservative Christopher Hitchens wrote after he was waterboarded, in which Hitchens at last admitted: waterboarding is torture.

The Red Cross Torture Report: What It Means
    By Mark Danner
    http://www.nybooks.com/articles/22614

When it comes to torture, it is not what we did but what we are doing. It is not what happened but what is happening and what will happen. In our politics, torture is not about whether or not our polity can “let the past be past”—whether or not we can “get beyond it and look forward.” Torture, for Dick Cheney and for President Bush and a significant portion of the American people, is more than a repugnant series of “procedures” applied to a few hundred prisoners in American custody during the last half-dozen or so years—procedures that are described with chilling and patient particularity in this authoritative report by the International Committee of the Red Cross.[2] Torture is more than the specific techniques—the forced nudity, sleep deprivation, long-term standing, and suffocation by water,” among others—that were applied to those fourteen “high-value detainees” and likely many more at the “black site” prisons secretly maintained by the CIA on three continents.

They never provide a link to their information, either, which makes their off-topic argument such as it is, immediately suspect.

Democrats have controlled congress for over three years. Are you better off now than you were three years ago?

    Absolutely false.

Democrats took over the majority in January, 2007 after the 2006 midterms.

They have controlled Congress for a little over two years. After for the first two years, they had to contend with a Republican president and a razor-thin margin in the Senate, which severely reduced their power to enact a progressive agenda.

Bad talking point. Try a new one.

Controlled? It was not veto-proof and the Democrats barely
    had a majority.

It’s interesting that you can’t look at the change over the last three months and ask if we are better off since January 2009. BushCo was like a Category 8 Hurricane – it’s going to take a great deal of time to clean up the mess made by the previous administration.

Ask if we are better off in January 2010.
    It’s too bad our country isn’t idiot-proof.

    ___________________________________________________________

I don’t suppose you ever think before you post? If you did, you might realize this raving is indicative of your lack of intelligence, or your assumption of our lack of intelligence.

First — Keith Olbermann isn’t in favor of waterboarding ANYBODY. It’s not as if he just decided to call for waterboarding Hannity out of the blue. Sean Hannity VOLUNTEERED to be waterboarded, as part of a rant on how trivial waterboarding is. Olbermann is merely holding Hannity to that promise, to make the following points:

    1. Waterboarding is torture.
    2. Torture is not trivial.
    3. Blowhards should put up or shut up.

Now, I notice you have not defended Hannity’s reneging on his promise in any way. Instead, you attack Olbermann’s counterpromise as a “stunt” (Hannity’s wasn’t a stunt?), and take two other refuges of cowards — the meme that this interrogation technique saves American lives (often said, never proven or even convincingly backed up), and blathering about ratings, as if that proves something.

Ratings are not an indicator of quality or accuracy. Just as the number of Big Macs sold isn’t an indicator of how good they are — just how available and inexpensive.

When a troll is reduced to bragging about Fox News ratings, it’s a sign he/she has run out of all other debate points.

“Most” of the general voting public are at baseball and soccer practice with their kids, watching espn or sports on TV, and generally living their lives and not watching hate news on Fix news.

Most people are intelligent enough to get there news from a variety of sources and make their minds accordingly…like we did in November!

Corporate owned media should be banned like it used to be – it’s one of our founding principals.

  48. spencers mom says:

Okay, here’s the beauty in all of this for me.

In order for Hanniteabagger to truly understand waterboarding, he needs to experience it. In order for him to experience it without dying (no, I don’t want him to die) he and the waterboarders have to establish a “safe sign” so he can have it stopped when he can’t take it any more.

BUT, to fully realize just how tortureous waterboarding is, the handlers have to ignore the “safe sign” for at least 15 seconds. Fifteen seconds is not long, but it sure will feel like it to Mr. Hanniteabagger.

So, to get around this 15-second bonus, would Sean give the “safe sign” 15 seconds before he thinks he’ll really need it? Because that would be essentially when it begins.

Does he think he can just hold his breath? Does he realize that the waterboarders will slam on his chest to expel that air?

Wow, I don’t have a lot of extra cash right now, but I would pay real money to watch him piss his pants and cry like a little girl.

  49. Rosencrantz says:

I think a more appropraite question would be, Why does Hannity hate the troops and their families?

I think that is a question he can better relate to. After all, HE was the one who said he would do it for charity. So that the troops and their families could receive some financial assistance. Olbermann is even guaranteeing VERY generous donation to this cause.

Clearly Hannity doesn’t want to help the troops. Clearly his support is nothing more than token BS to make himself look good on TV at the expense of the people he wants to put in harms way. I guess Hannity loves the troops, as long as they are the ones being put in harms way so he can sit safely in his studio, and get paid millions to use them like props.

So why does Hannity hate the troops and their families?

Obama is evil that refuses to carry out his sworn duties and won’t allow prosecution of the enemies that have done real damage to our Constitution, while he continues in the crimes against humanity of the former evil Bush/Cheney regime. The present congress and president manipulate words and lies with the same ease as the former. Being. Has there been any lessoning of the killing of inncocent people in the Middle East where our government lied to start the slaughter? Has there been any indicatioin that Obama is in pursuit of the truth of what really happened on September 11, 2001? Will he allow the truth of the anthrax murders? Obama knows very well that none of the wars on the Middle East sovereign lands are just or legal. They were begun and continued based completely on lies and fraud. The real terrorists are not extremist of the Middle East, but right here leading this banana republic. The problems of the Middle East that were not of our own government’s evil doing are internal problems of the Middle East, and not ours to solve.

Just goes to show, that when push comes to shove, the Rethuglicans remain the biggest of Chickenhawks……quite willing to let other REAL Americans take responsibility for all the crap they think up, but not willing to defend their country or suffer for principles if it involves any sort of uncomfortable or inconvenient action on their part. Their motto should be “The Party of Cowards”.

  84. greenpagan says:

A potato has more brains than Hannity. (But Hannity is way better paid and therefore a fine AmeriKKKan…)

  85. Rosencrantz says:

Wow. Since when is Olberman an employee of GE? Last I checked, he is employed by MSNBC which, despite being owned by GE, is its own company. Olberman’s cheques would come from MSNBC, signed not by GE but by his own companies boss.

And last I heard, MSNBC has seen both their ratings and profits increase lately. Mainly thanks to Olberman.

You ignorant Republican tools may as well be arguing that Pizza Hut employees shouldn’t take a raise if Pepsi Co. got a bail out. Despite Pepsi owning Pizza Hut (or at least they used to) they are two totally different companies with different sets of financial books.

  86. curious says:

What, he still hasn’t done it? I guess we are all surprised by that. Right? If it’s not really torture then what is the problem?

  87. Crazy Cricket Cat Lady says:

Perhaps Neo doesn’t know what parody means? Education is sorely lacking in many.

  88. tonyrich300 says:

Hannity is a pathetic, loud, coward.

  89. Innocent Bystander says:

The Ballad of Brave Sir Sean
Bravely bold Sir Sean rode forth from Camelot.
He was not afraid to die, O brave Sir Sean!
He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways,
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Sean!

He was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp,
    Or to have his eyes gouged out, and his elbows broken;
    To have his kneecaps split, and his body burned away;
And his limbs all hacked and mangled, brave Sir Sean!

His head smashed in and his heart cut out
And his liver removed and his bowels unplugged
And his nostrils raped and his bottom burned off
    And his pen–

    Brave Sir Sean ran away.
    Bravely ran away, away!
When danger reared its ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Sean turned about
    And gallantly he chickened out.
    Bravely taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat,
Bravest of the brave, Sir Sean!

He is packing it in and packing it up
And sneaking away and buggering up
And chickening out and pissing off home,
Yes, bravely he is throwing in the sponge…

  90. ralph the wonder locust says:

Yep… CFP has gone ’round the bend on this Olbermann obsession.

It is a by-now familiar pattern among his type, trollus obnoxious.

  91. sacopenapa says:

    Hannity is weting his pants!

  92. Luis Chapulin M says:

    ConservativeForProgress Says:
What, Olbermann still hasn’t given back his share of the GE bailout money? I guess we are all surprised by that. Right? If it’s “class economic rape” (his words) then what is the problem?

I must have missed the show where Olbermann publicly declared he would give his share of the bailout money back, and then failed to do it.

Unlike Hannity, who opened up his yapper to say he would do something, and then hasn’t found the cojones to actually do it.

  93. WASHINGTONREPORT says:

I think it was torture and the correct thing to do if it stopped additional attacks. Observing that tenant of the Geneva Convention did not protect our troops from torture in previous wars in WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, so don’t use that as an intellectual argument against it.

Many would probably believe these terrorists just need a hug.

  94. Luis Chapulin M says:

    WASHINGTONREPORT Says:
I think it was torture and the correct thing to do if it stopped additional attacks.

Coward. Selling your principles and honor for fake safety. That’s not the USA that the rest of the world looked up to, in the 50’s and 60’s.

  95. Doodlebug Shayne says:

ConservativeForProgress, GE CAPITAL, got a bailout at the end of September. Keith doesn’t work for the financial services arm of GE and he’s not an officer of the corportation. He didn’t TAKE a raise, NBC negotiated a contract with him. And NBC is a minor portion of GE’s business.

  96. Realness says:

Please Washington Report, no intellectual arguement needed to refute you, because you lack any intellect. People were tried and SENTENCED to death for use of torture and waterboarding from most of the wars you listed.

You call what you are patriotism? Resorting to torture to ease your paranoia? When the scientific and interragation experts both on record stating that information from such means is a crapshoot?

And then to wrap up your stupidity, you imply that the only option other than torture is ‘a hug,’ again completely disregarding SANE experts that have gone on record to detail waaaaay more efficient means of intelligence gathering.

Your simplemindedness is astounding, and its citizens like you that lower our average intelligence to the point of idiocy.

  97. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Building on its 4-year-old environmental effort, ecomagination, General Electric Co. is launching a $6 billion health care initiative focused on improving health care for more people at reduced cost.

In addition, GE Capital will provide $2 billion in financing for advancing health care information technology and several GE businesses will spend $1 billion over the next five years for partnerships, media content and services related to healthymagination.

I’m thinking Keith’s salary isn’t an issue. However because of Rush’s $44M salary his boss had extensive layoffs.

  98. Sean Insanity says:

If Sean really loves the troops and the families of the troops, he will not only agree to follow through on his promise, he will let Keith Olbermann do the waterboarding.

  99. Purple State says:

    WASHINGTONREPORT Says:

Many would probably believe these terrorists just need a hug.

Sounds to me like someone needs a Care Bear Stare.

  100. herecomestheangst says:

Hannity is the type of guy who only goes into a rival’s challenge with his own posse behind him so he doesn’t have to do anything to get his hands dirty.

So no, Keith Olbermann and all of us will never see Inannity man up to his cowardice. The dominant never wants to be the submissive in the GOP.

  101. dbadass says:

If I was to ever torture anyone it would be those losers at the Privacy Center….

  102. drunkfoulmouthfiltybeast says:

Hannity Insanity would never admit waterboarding is torture, unless of course, it would happen to him, family or friends, yea, I’m sure of it, he has friends, Rush, John Bolton, Ingraham, Ann Couitus or is it Coulter, Ah, who cares. I am sure of one thing, he would order it on any of his skeletons in his family’s closet, friends and neighbors who had a mischievous dog or cat, someone’s sister who stood him up or laughed at him during recess at Fox News, walta minute, does Fox News deserve capital letters, Hiel Hitler no! its fix news ad nauseum

  103. MapleStreet says:

    115 drunkfoulmouthfiltybeast,

you’re giving me a great idea. Instead of Olberman’s offer of so many $ per second of torture, why not make it so many dollars that Hannity can watch his family waterboarded ?

Sick idea, I know. But would definitely help clarify the Reichtwing’s ability to notice if it is torture.

  104. lbbnjsharpe says:

    Shawn;
I’ll help donate to the water board fund raising event. Might even toss a coupla nickles to Ruperts empire/dunk tank…
Take the kids & the laid off Fox employees to Disney Land. They have plenty of water.
Hey I’m just one of those main stream dumb sh*ts on the street that you like to make fun of but I’m thinking your fund raiser would help heal America in many ways. Plus the foreign peeps could enjoy your fund raising event.
Shawn, follow through because we will never forget…

  105. youtube says:

Hannity, accept a reality. say it.

  106. Bad Eye says:

I don’t know, guys. While a fundraiser is no doubt a noble cause, tying it to a serious issue such as a waterboarding event seems to me as another way for Sean to make light of the situation. The underlying theme that I think he wants to express is that waterboarding is no big deal, thus his followers will dismiss it as nothing more than child’s play and soon forget he even mentioned it.

  107. Robt says:

Maybe Hannity and Coulter can be water boarded on the buddy system……..

  108. RealityCheck says:

Look what I found when opening the paper today.

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitol-briefing/2009/05/cia_says_pelosi_was_briefed_on.html

I guess you can’t trust anything?

  109. EugeneDebs says:

    ConservativePunk

Proves once again that he is the stupidest piece of garbage to ever post on the internet. Knowing he is far too stupid to EVER know what he is talking about he comes here to annoy us. Its all he has since no one likes him no one respects him he has the IQ of a garden pea and scumsucking slimemolds wont even bother with his putrefying corpse out of professional courtesy. A disgusting pustulent herpes sore of subhuman moron. He has nothing to offer humanity except the stench of his rotting soul.

  110. Purple State says:

RC, do you think Hannity should back his words up by volunteering for waterboarding? That’s what this issue’s about.

  111. rightwing-leftwing says:

I wonder if they’re be a “Pelisi” thread today? RC, If they move on this war crimes thing, I’m sure some “Dems” will get caught in the net they cast. Let’s just say this – No one is above the law.

  112. Robert Duarte says:

Why are there so MANY HYPOCRITES who CLAIM to be against TORTURE, yet never say a peep about partial birth abortion?

Photos of WATERBOARDING? Big Deal. It rarely ends in death.

PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTIONS ALWAYS END IN DEATH. Where are the demands for THOSE PHOTOS so people can see it for what it really is?

  113. thyican says:

OK why all you liberals are so stupid.
1 You only watch or read the liberal media. (ABC, CBS, MNBC, CNN and all the mainstream papers NY times ect..
2 95 percent of the TV and movies you watch are made by liberals
3 You believe every expert, even if they are speaking on a subject which is not related to their field of expertize.

We conservatives have to seek out the truth by the use of the internet or we get to listen to FOX news. Our other source, am talk radio. Which your king Obama wants to bring back the fairness act( If any of you morons know what that is) because he cant stand guys like Rush or Shawn speaking the truth about the liberal govt. Oh by the way I hope you idiots enjoy inflation and high Gas prices ($6.00 per gallon) because with this administration it is coming.
