Rupert Murdoch reports that Fox News doubled its operating income since last year.

foxnewsYesterday, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation – the parent company of Fox News – reported a 70% drop in net income to $300 million and a 16% drop in revenue to $7.37 billion for the quarter that ended March 31. In the midst of the bad earnings report, “cable television was the conglomerate’s one bright spot.” Murdoch said, “Our Cable Network Programming segment showed remarkable growth, led by the Fox News Channel which nearly doubled its operating income over the year ago quarter.” According to Murdoch’s release, Fox News’ primetime ratings are up significantly over the same period last year:

The FOX News Channel (FNC) almost doubled its operating income versus the third quarter a year ago, primarily from increased affiliate revenues on higher rates. In the quarter ended March 31, 2009, FNC primetime ratings were up 23% compared with the same period a year ago.

That’s to be expected on a “news” channel for a presidential election year. The massive spending on national advertising drives up rates, and thus, income. I’d be very surprised if CNN and MSNBC didn’t report similar operating revenue growth.

Like Ralph had alluded, the operating income reports for MSNBC and CNN will confirm or deny this.

I’ll be willing to give Fox its props for its earnings, but that still doesn’t mean their coverage is accurate. Even snake-oil salesmen report profits time to time when they find the right audience.

    _____________

I wouldn’t be surprised if Rupert is shedding some pretty big tears in private these days. He seemed to grow his media empire pretty quickly there, which would indicate he was borrowing money to do it, and mebbe using News Corp stock as collateral. Works fine when the assets you buy generate positive cash flow and continue to appreciate. Whilst Faux News might be doing okay…

    … Rupert’s newspapers? Not… so… good.

As the article points out, a 70% drop in income? Ouchie ouch ouch… so… lemme see… the newspapers are dying… he can’t sell them off, most likely, for what he paid for them. They’re almost all losing money. And News Corp stock is DOWN. And Rupert’s prolly got some pretty hefty payments to make on the loans he took out to buy all those papers in the first place. Just a hunch…

Rupert’s likely got his “manhood” caught in a vise of his own making here…

    Two words… “Tee” & “hee”

But then, Rupert’s ALLUS got his porno income… whaaat??? You DIDN’T know… that News Corp, along w/ Comcast, is one of the biggest producers of porn in the country?

Where else can they get their daily infusion of “Obama is a socialist nazi fascist muslim!!!”?

With a monopoly on the crazy, it’s no surprise FNC is pulling down big numbers — at least for the time being.

Quarterly revenue declined 15.8 percent to $7.37 billion.

Film unit profit rose 8 percent thanks to such theatricals as Slumdog Millionaire and Taken and U.S. syndication TV revenue from How I Met Your Mother and Boston Legal.

TV unit profit plummeted from $419 million to $4 million amid weaker ad trends. Local TV station advertising markets declined nearly 30 percent in the quarter because of particularly weak auto, financial and movie ad trends.

Cable network results again were strong, driven by affiliate fee increases at Fox News Channel.

This whole meme about how popular Fixed News is really gets to me. There are several reasons why Fixed has higher viewership than the other stations. They are as follows:

    1) CNN and MSNBC split the rest of cable news audiences

    2) Fixed is available to many more Americans than CNN or MSNBC are. All Cable stations (Direct TV, Dish, Comcast, et al) have Fixed in their basic lineup and CNN and MSNBC in their premium lineups. That means that you have to pay extra to have access to CNN or MSNBC.

Again the design was sound, but the installation was crap hence the subcontractor being fired and not the GC or the architect.

Having been involved in several high dollar building contracts, it is practically impossible to fire an architect once building has begun. If you fire your architect you pretty much have to stop construction and go back and start over. Most companies aren’t willing to do that so they continue to try to work with the architect to fix the things they screwed up in the first place.

Actually, your comment makes no sense. If there was a lack of demand for CNN or MSNBC, the cable stations would not charge for the ability to view them, they would give it away. They charge for things they think are “premium”.

Besides, the reason why Fox is in their basic lineup is because Fox pays them for that. Just like they pay hotels and bars to only show Fox on their in-house TV’s.

“Developers are not going to hire prestigious architects and then hire slackers to execute the work are they?”

Sigh … you missed the point considering you don’t know very much about construction industry. Developers usually hire a general contractor for the project along with the designer, i.e. the architect. The GC then puts the multitude of tasks, i.e. specific trades, out for bid to dozens if not hundreds of subcontractors. To onus of an inferior installation rests with the subcontractor and their labor and ultimately with the GC considering he is the one who pays the subs. Sometimes you do get bad craftmanship from a subcontractor. It happens. Does it happen more with unionized labor vs. non-unionized labor? It happens but not more frequently and in fact the quality is usually better, but the owner must choose to pay a premium for the increased cost.

As long as this Neanderthal hack continues to make money he will continue to defy decency. He will continue to have as his spokespeople, the full lineup at Fix. Money is the bottom line. And truth does not enter into the picture for Murdoch. And when this old goat shuffles off, to whatever part of the inferno that will take him, his son will take over. And I will bet anything he is daddy’s clone.

Perhaps his son will not breed and the sickness will die out with him. No such luck.

In you guy’s eyes I am very important apparently.

Yes Tracy, you are important. You are the poster boy for lying Republicans, who avoid responsibility for their own actions. You are a case study in the warped psyche of right-wing Republicans.

Rupert Murdoch has been identified as the most dangerous traitor in America. Pass the word.

  92. cdwriteme says:

I completely understand why they are so popular. Bottom line: they are propaganda for the very wealthy. There is ALOT of money in that right-wing machine and propaganda everywhere. They play to people’s prejudices and fears. They incessantly present misleading negative interpretations of those they consider “the enemy”. They use well-funded think-tanks and the media to re-write history (e.g. Reagonomics helped working Americans). We must keep pushing always and never allow the internet to become compromised like nearly all mainstream media has. Peace.

  93. shoeless says:

When my children were very young, they would continue to lie, even after being caught. I taught them not to do that, and like most children, they grew out of that phase.

Don’t worry the hard work for me is and always has been there and the stealing part is and always has been non-existant.

With “news” stations like the repulsive MSNBC, NBC & others, thank God for Fox so we can find out the truth about this Obami regime and what they are trying to get away with.
