Right-wing activist: Being gay is an ‘unhealthy’ lifestyle — like being obese.

The New Jersey Coalition to Preserve and Protect Marriage (NJCPPM) is one of the right-wing groups pushing to stop marriage equality efforts in the state. Earlier this week, the group spoke to reporters about “traditional values,” during which time a NJCPPM associate said that being gay is “very unhealthy” — like being obese:

Jim White with the Knights of Columbus is a NJCPPM associate. He says, “Never until now has anyone thought that marriage should be between the people of the same sex. Frankly, the government does not have the right to meddle with marriage.” He adds, “It’s also a well-know[n] fact that the homosexual lifestyle or homosexual practice is very unhealthy. Government should discourage it and not elevate it to a level by calling it marriage. In an age where we worry about people being overweight and going after them and the government interfering in that, what is the government doing promoting a lifestyle that is inherently unhealthy?

Being Republican is an ‘unhealthy’ lifestyle – like being teh stupid.

  2. DRxJapanese Beetle says:

I think I may organize the MCUUM (Michigan Coalition to Unpreserve and Unprotect Marriage).

    This will be my statement:

It’s also a well-know fact that the heterosexual lifestyle or heterosexual practice is very unhealthy (rape, adultery, divorce). Government should discourage it and not elevate it to a level by calling it a union. In an age where we worry about people being overweight and going after them and the government interfering in that, what is the government doing promoting a lifestyle that is inherently unhealthy?“

  3. ladybastet says:

I can’t find the words to express my outrage. Have they no shame?

  4. fletc3her says:

This is just stupid. Like so many right wingers he goes off into his own personal fantasies of homosexual love making when ever he thinks about gay people. Being gay is not defined by the mechanics of sexual actions, but by the desire to associate romantically with members of the same sex. There is no reason why a monogamous, gay, married couple is in any way less healthy than a monogamous, hetro, married, couple.

Let’s ban college, the undergraduates are having sex out of wedlock.

  5. hollydale1 says:

Frankly, the government does not have the right to meddle with marriage.” He adds

So, is he willing to give up the over 1,400 rights and privileges granted to married couples by the government?

  6. KateWords says:

“Frankly, the government does not have the right to meddle with marriage.”

Except that he wants the state to ban gays from marrying?

    Sure, OK, whatever…

  7. Xisithrus says:

NewsFlash: Laura Ingraham chides Meghan McCain for being very unhealthy.

    /snarkety snarking snark

But really is it someone elses concern if one is overweight or gay?

    No.

  8. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Well Jimbo, I imagine being filled and consumed with hate for anyone who differs than you in regards to skin color, ideology, religion, sexual preference and politics isn’t very healthy either and is much like insanity.

  9. Xisithrus says:

Government should discourage it and not elevate it to a level by calling it marriage.

Wait. Arent these the same folks who wailed and flailed about a big brother/Nanny state?

  10. Buckie Boy says:

And just what are these as$holes doing to protect marriage?

    Campaigning against infidelity, divorce?

No, they just don’t want other people to have the rights that they do.

    Fcuk the Republicans

  11. StratRat says:

The American Taliban is doing its level best to take this country back to the 1950’s. Their images of America revolve around ‘Beaver Cleaver’ and ‘Father Knows Best’. Why do they feel the need to worry about who I am in love with? What makes it their business? Seems to me they spend way too much time worrying about my love life – probably to the detriment of their own. They must not like themselves very much.

  12. Realness says:

FYI, the context for this argument from the right (religious and political) are from statistics that are completely dated time periods of the AIDS crisis in 80’s and early 90’s. It’s an example yet again of the use of misinformation to provide the illusion of rationality to bigotry. In developed nations, the margin of difference is small to nonexistent. There are contemporary studies that claim to “prove” this but come from such BS places like Family Research Institute. It’s fodder for politicians and bigoted activists like this.

    No.
    “““““““““““““““““““““““““`
Hmmmm I wonder if Ingraham has the same concern for the that over bloated blimp Rush Limbaugh or Dennis Hastert?

  14. hormiga brava chavez says:

“It’s also a well-know fact that the homosexual lifestyle or homosexual practice is very unhealthy.”

WTF? This is just evil and wrong how they’re trying to demonize homosexuality. As if heterosexual lifestyles are any healthier or better with all of the STDs, rape, incest, domestic violence, teen pregnancy, etc.

  15. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Stratrat, I think you are on to something in regard to the American Taliban and their feigned concern for all of us and their “Do as I say not as I do” mantra.

  16. Purple State says:

You know, we do worry about people being overweight. We try to emphasize a lifestyle of eating right and exercise. However, there are also people out there that would like you to buy their burgers, smoke their cigarettes, and drink their alcohol. There are also people out there that emphasize that being thin to the point of death is the way to succeed.

There are bound to be overweight people out there, but is it the government’s right to punish overweight people? They still have the rights of people who are normal in weight to marry.

If homosexuality is so unhealthy, how come the FDA or the CDC hasn’t told us about that?

    Mr. White, citations plz kthx.

  17. mk3872 says:

TP – You have your quotes in the wrong place on this headline. It should not be “unhealthy” but instead “lifestyle”.

Being homosexual is not a choice or a “lifestyle”. Being homosexual is not likely something that many people would “choose”.

Instead, what conservatives are saying is to “pretend” to be heterosexual (DODT, for instance) and everything will be just fine …

  18. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Whats next from the right? Abstinence is the healthiest choice for gay people? Hey I know lets just ban sex altogether. And to make sure guys like Rush doesn’t break the law we shall lop off his hands. ;)

  19. Realness says:

I would also qualify that there is unfortuntately an increased amount of suicides in homosexual-identified people due to a biased and ignorant public perception that this activist only adds fuel to. That and outright violence, denial of services, psychological effects of ostricization, the need to hide who we are. Yeah, these all can lower a life expectancy. I guess bigotry can do that.

  20. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

    doesn’t = don’t…

  21. herecomestheangst says:

Maybe the Republicans should put a sign over their party affiliation that reads “gays, lesbians and anyone of lifestyle and/or color not of or with God/Rush need not apply”.

  22. misscoleopteramolly says:

You know, if these crackpots want to be taken seriously by anyone besides their loyal choir, they need to come up with something other than stating that a load of gibberish is a “well-known fact”.

Why are we supposed to believe that a “gay lifestyle” is unhealthy? Is it because “teh gay” get AIDS? Is it because “teh gay” tend to get beaten up, killed, and tied to fences? We need a little more to go on than just trusting their word that it’s a “well-known fact”.

I suspect these rightwingers want us to picture gays as being promiscuous sex maniacs who hang around men’s rooms looking for as much anonymous buttsecks as they can. Yes — that kind of activity is a health risk. But so is heterosexual promiscuity. Furthermore, these aren’t the gays who are looking to get married.

I would think a group like this would WANT to promote monogamy and lifetime commitment. Besides, homosexuality will be around whether the government “discourages” it or not.

  23. RantingTommy says:

If being gay is a choice (it isn’t), then at what point in his life did this “activist” CHOOSE to be straight?

And does that mean he is in denial of his natural desires?

  24. misscoleopteramolly says:

“In an age where we worry about people being overweight and going after them and the government interfering in that…”
    ___________________________________________________________

Did I miss something? Who’s “going after” obese people? How is the government “interfering”?

Is anybody denying the right of obese people to marry?

  25. herecomestheangst says:

    Uncle Fester Lurks Says:

Whats next from the right? Abstinence is the healthiest choice for gay people? Hey I know lets just ban sex altogether. And to make sure guys like Rush doesn’t break the law we shall lop off his hands. ;)

Abstinence works 100% of the time. But just ask Sarah Palin about what happens when it’s put up against a ride on a snowmobile on a frostbitten date night!

  26. Hoodathunktick says:

“Frankly, the government does not have the right to meddle with marriage.”

Oh, you mean all the divorce laws are null and void?

And the government does have the right to say who can participate in a legal contract. Whether a religion wants to bless off on it is entirely up to them.

  27. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

You wanna protect traditional marriage? Enact the death penalty for spousal abuse.
    Idiot.

  28. Xisithrus says:

Hmmmm I wonder if Ingraham has the same concern for the that over bloated blimp Rush Limbaugh or Dennis Hastert?

Well, of course, Ingraham lurvs her some hypocrites

  29. chiroptera toasterhead says:

You know, Jim White may be on to something. Being gay may indeed be an unhealthy lifestyle, but why stop there when there are so many other minorities to vilify?

For example, “being black” is an extremely unhealthy lifestyle choice. According to the CDC, African-Americans are more likely than whites to die of colorectal, prostate, lung, and stomach cancer, more likely to suffer stroke, and less likely to have health insurance or be vaccinated against childhood diseases.

We as a country should not be supporting such an unhealthy lifestyle choice, and I do hope Mr. White will work just as hard to discourage African-American marriage as he is working to discourage gay marriage.

  30. spring heeled jack says:

Boss Limbaugh is gay and obese and a drug addict.

Electing him GOD of your party is a USDA Grade A endorsement of unhealthy lifestyles, Jim White!

  31. Xisithrus says:

“Frankly, the government does not have the right to meddle with marriage.”

Oh Jeez. So neither do divorce lawyers.

  32. Jackie says:

Good to hear Jim White sees not problem with Vitters, Foley or Craigs actions. What will be said when the public learns Justice Roberts marriage was fake and that Laura was paid to stay with George for 8 years in their fake marriage. What will be said about Connie Rice’s soulmate female partner. Look Sarah Palin let’s her teenage daughter sleep with her boyfriend in the Family home and then tries to keep the secret of her having a baby. Rush Limbaugh wants to get in Sarah’s pants and McCain looked at Sarah as a meal. Let’s not forget the Pastor who preached against gays while being one and using the church money for sex. Oh yes he asked for forgiveness and then did it again.

  33. StratRat says:

    Uncle Fester Lurks Says:

Stratrat, I think you are on to something in regard to the American Taliban and their feigned concern for all of us and their “Do as I say not as I do” mantra.

That is the defining philosophy of these folks: Do as I say. It’s the basic authoritarianism built into every one of them. Their lives are in shambles, but they believe they can direct mine? Um, no.

  34. mardod says:

Ignorance is also unhealthy for a society. Perhaps they can take up that issue for a bit.

  35. texaslady says:

Same sex marriage, hetro marriage, abortion are religious issues, do we really need laws to govern by personal religious beliefs? Separation of church and state, remember ? These religious nuts just can’t stand to stay out of other people’s lives.

  36. Xisithrus says:

Limbaugh is as unhealthy as Ted Haggard! Oh Noes!!

  37. Xisithrus says:

Marriage has become an agreement share then split the material things you own once you get tired of each other…why should the heterosexuals be the only ones to go thru this traumatic experience.

    Share the pain!

    /snark

  38. dbadass says:

“Frankly, the government does not have the right to meddle with marriage.”

You mean like deciding who can and who can’t do it?

  39. RantingTommy says:

It’s unhealthy to diminish your short life in preparation for a fictional “afterlife”, especially when it requires you to be an ignorant bigot.

  40. Tallygirl says:

I’m more concerned that the people who are self-identifying as being Republican are showing a marked tendency towards mental illness. The delusions alone are troubling.

  41. ugotmeinsd_619 says:

Did she just call me fat??? Oooh hell no!!!

  42. KateWords says:

What IS it with this “lifestyle” slur these idiots throw around?

From what I’ve seen, gay people work, sleep, eat… and even have sex now and then – just like everyone else. How is that a “lifestyle?”

Being gay isn’t some narrow-minded worldview which biases their every thought and action – you know, like being a bigot is.

  43. Realness says:

    very much on-topic:

Look up the documentary Outrage, which opens today. It’s about closeted gay politicians who have pushed or advocated policies that have hurt the gay community.

  44. spring heeled jack says:

Is there some secret right-wing contest, lately, as to who can make the most offensive public statement, with the winner being whoever garners the most comments on liberal blogs?

    These folks are off-the-hook!

  45. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

And still no Darlyy….In Rio again? Too busy blasting baby deer in Indiana?

  46. Luis Chapulin M says:

Just tell them that Gay marriages reduce the number of abortions. Let’s see what they make about it.

  47. texaslady says:

People determine marriage not law. I have known gay people who have lived together being faithful to one another for 50 years. I have known “traditional” marriages that are shams, so who is the better example.

  48. texaslady says:

We really need to hope limbaugh is sterile, along with the other right wing fanatics.

  50. Xisithrus says:

Government should outlaw these people from having sex.

    Yeh, more /snarcasm

    ___________

In a philosophical sense, perhaps. But law has to determine what constitutes marriage as it relates to taxation, property ownership, custody of children, dependant benefits, and other marriage-related issues.

  52. dasm says:

“It’s also a well-know[n] fact that the homosexual lifestyle or homosexual practice is very unhealthy.”

A well-known fact? What an idiot White is. Inventing “facts”, a Repub lifestyle, means you are dishonest or a liar. Now that’s a lifestyle we all should discourage. Instead, Repubs promote it.

Apparently, NJCPPM believes fat people shouldn’t marry.

  57. Snowman says:

Let the asshats keep talking. It’s very helpful … for the cause of equality.

  58. texaslady says:

Custody, ownership of property can all be determined without legality of marriage. As for marriage protecting children, ever tried collecting child support through the courts, doesn’t work. Sorry, but marriage is a religious issue not a legal one. Time to change and update our laws.

  59. sacopenapa says:

People who worry too much about other people’s sexuality have, deep inside themselves, the same sexual desire they claim to opose to.
They are also very bad in bed!

  60. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

OK, you’re right. Therefore, any heterosexual couple who have a homosexual child are guilty of the worst kind of child abuse, let’s call it “homosexualizing”. These couples should be rounded up, locked up, sterilized, and have their marriage annulled.

Like the Al Capone case, at least this way we’d get Dick Cheney behind bars where he belongs.

/snark off (except the last sentence)

  61. wiley says:

It appears that being an alter boy is pretty risky.

  62. texaslady says:

Well since science is not something religous people understand I can see that they think homosexuality is a learned behavior not genetic. Guess I see so many talented people who are homosexual and think they lucked out in the gene department.

  63. zxbe says:

So are they going to put on ballot measures to keep obese people from marrying? And what other “unhealthy” lifestyles will they want to target? And who gets to decide? For the party of small government, they sure do seem to want to make a lot of decisions for us.

  64. texaslady says:

Well, when the repub group went from being a listening tour to a teaching tour, don’t believe enlightment is on their agenda. They also need to look at the polls showing they have an audience of 21% now.

  65. Bozo The Neocootiebug says:

it’s amazing how these right wing assclowns twist their rhetoric to suit their needs. at one time they said gay marriage is a state’s issue. now that the states are making decisions they don’t agree with they’re claiming it’s nobody’s issue?

  66. Keith says:

I’m sure obese people are allowed to marry. I was at Wal-Mart the other day and……

  67. deebaser says:

Mortality rates reached horrible proportions in maternity institutions in the 1800s, sometimes climbing to 40 percent of birthgiving women. At the beginning of the 1900s, maternal death rates were around 1 in 100 for live births

Well I guess in the 1800s when women were dropping like flies from childbirth the government should have been promoting homosexuality.

  73. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Why is it that these morons who always claim to want less government want the government in other peoples bedrooms?

  74. Doodlebug Shayne says:

  75. paganpunk says:

  76. Doodlebug Shayne says:

So they’re going to outlaw obesity, cigarettes and drinking too much alcohol right because otherwise how can you justify that marriage is too risky.

  77. Bozo The Neocootiebug says:

i see a lot more gay men at the gym than i do fatass republiscums. the red states of alabama and mississippi have the highest obesity rate in the country which leads me to believe conservatism is bad for your health

  78. Trollspotter says:

So Republicans don’t want obese people to get married?

Does Rush Limbaugh know about this?

  82. smidget says:

Actually, “liberal” literally means someone who stands for individual liberties, so it’s very liberal of them. :)

  83. Alejandro says:

Liberal used to mean what libertarian now means. Libertarian = classical liberal.

    You are an ignorant bigot.

  92. teri3157 says:

no, no, no #49, Luis…you can’t tell the neanderthal jackass’s that gay marriage keeps abortion down because Pat Robertson says if gay marriage legislation passes, then it’s the end of baby making altogether..as in people won’t make babies because we will have too many gays, with no one left to make the babies.

Does this sound like the logic of your 4 year old nephew trying to explain a dualist belief, as in, pointy rocks are there so animals can scratch their itchy place, or toads croak so you won’t step on them…

  93. Libellula saturata Annie says:

These are the same idiots who argued with the same absurd seriousness that women weren’t capable of voting or taking care of themselves and that blacks weren’t quite human.

Why does *snyone* still pay any attention to this absurd bullcrap — except for the fact that these statements echo their own bigotry…?

  94. Zooey says:

I hate to think what this means for Limbaugh. I’m sure the gay community doesn’t want him…

  95. Bluestocking says:

Does Mr. White happen to be aware that at least one research study found evidence strongly suggesting that Sigmund Freud was right — that outward expressions of strong dislike may be a cover for unacknowledged feelings of attraction?

How else would one explain the fact that the experimental group for the study in question — a group composed of self-admitted homophobic straight males — were found to show statistically higher levels of sexual arousal in response to homoerotic imagery than the control group of more tolerant straight males did?

Can you say “reaction formation”? It would explain a lot. Reaction formation would quite easily provide the person in question with a handy, ready-made excuse with which s/he can excuse and justify their own rumination on — or obsession over — the subject of homosexuality while still blocking recognition of their own homosexual inclinations (whether mild or strong) from their conscious awareness.

  96. Evil Spaniard says:

  98. Bad Eye says:

Why is it unhealthy for you, White? Because it makes you go, “ick”?

Oh, and I love this: he doesn’t think the government should meddle in marriage yet he has no problem with them meddling in controlling how people live their lives.

Remind me again that the rightwingers just detest the government having more control.

  99. dominicgrey says:

  102. labman57 says:

If social conservatives had their way, being gay would be extremely unhealthy. It would get you fired from your job, evicted from your apartment, and physically beaten up on the streets.

  103. sapphire_407 says:

I don’t agree with everything the man says but he is right about one thing. Our government does NOT have the right to change the definition of marriage, between a man and a woman. For Gods sakes, all over the world for thousands of years this is one tradition we have shared with each other. Some things need to be left ALONE.
