hotjobs

New employment data from the Labor Department released this morning shows that employers shed 539,000 jobs in April, while the unemployment rate climbed to 8.9 percent. Economists had anticipated a drop of 600,000 jobs.

For the first time, Afghanistan war funding will surpass the outlay for Iraq in next year’s proposed defense budget, “demonstrating a shift in priorities that Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates seeks to execute.” War funds for the fiscal 2010 budget request “includes $65 billion for Afghanistan operations and $61 billion for Iraq. For 2009, $87 billion was requested for Iraq and $47 billion for Afghanistan.”

Attorney General Eric Holder said yesterday that getting Dawn Johnsen confirmed to head the Office of Legal Counsel is “probably my top priority.” At a Senate appropriations subcommittee hearing, Holder said the office requires the “solidity and continuity” of a Senate-confirmed assistant attorney general.

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge (R) announced that he won’t run for Senate. “[M]y desire and intention is to help my party craft solutions that both sides of the aisle can embrace,” he said. “My hope is to raise the level of civility in public debate and raise the bar on outcomes that serve our citizens fully, fairly and equally.”

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) has backed out of plans to attend the White House Correspondents’ annual dinner on Saturday, to which she was invited as a guest of Fox News. Due to “a state of emergency because of record flooding in Eagle, Alaska,” Palin will be unable to make the trip to DC, and has also had to pull out of co-hosting a dinner in Virginia for the Republican Governors Association.

The Congressional Black Caucus is “launching a campaign to persuade President Obama to appoint one of their members,” Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA), to replaced Justice David Souter’s seat on the Supreme Court.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said yesterday that “Pakistan would launch a full-scale offensive against Pakistani Taliban guerrillas who’ve seized control of the vast Swat valley.” He said the government had tried peaceful negotiation but the strategy failed. Pakistan will no longer “bow our heads before the terrorists,” Gilani said in a TV address to the nation.

In his FY2010 budget, President Obama boosted his commitment to immigration enforcement, calling “for extra money to build an employee-verification system and to pay for more personnel and equipment to patrol the border.” “If the American people don’t feel like you can secure the borders,” he said last week, “then it’s hard to strike a deal that would get people out of the shadows.”

FEMA will be taking away the temporary housing they provided to Louisiana residents after Hurricane Katrina at the end of May despite the fact that many residents have just received money to rebuild in the last six months or “are struggling with inadequate grants or no money at all.”

And finally: Project Runway’s Tim Gunn was on Capitol Hill earlier this week making it work. Gunn met with Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), telling the congressman, “You look great!” Smith then “lined up his staff” and had Gunn critique their outfits. One female staffer was “complimented on her grey skirt and sweater paired with a light brown belt. Gunn said, ‘This outfit is all about the belt and it works.’” A male staffer fared less well, however, when he was “was scolded and told to buy a properly fitting suit jacket.”

Is this the latest official GOP talking point? Any old lie will do, I guess.

That doesn’t sound like the Republican party – better check with Rush to get your talking points correct, Tom.

  3. Peter C says:

Yes, Fuzzwald. I, too, noticed that CFP gave no evidence. It is easy to make pronouncements about what we’ll be able to see ‘in a few months’.

Even as we speak, the Heritage Foundation is preparing the report which proves that the whole econmic implosion was Bill Clitnon’s fault.

Credit for the recovery (if any) will go to Ronald “Death Squad” Reagan.

  5. Hoodathunktick says:

If continuing to shed jobs at a rate of half a million a month, one car company in bankruptcy and a second on the edge is recovery, I’d hate to think what people like CFP think getting worse looks like.

  6. DNFP says:

The president’s proposed budget calls for cutting the Public Safety Officers’ Death Benefits Program from $110 million to $60 million

Because it’s over-funded, i.e., they never spend the amount allocated, which leaves unused funds which could be spent elsewhere..

    DIPSHIT.

  9. Chyron HR says:

“current recession started in late 2007 or early 2008″

Which, according to the GOP, was caused by Obama being elected in late 2008, even though they themselves went into November 08 insisting that McCain would win in a landslide.

“that the recovery began in November or December of 2008″

But this couldn’t possibly have been caused by people anticipating the policies that Obama would enact in early 2009.

Gosh, the GOP’s talking points are so incoherent, you’d think their party was being run by a drug addict and a mentally retarded woman!

ConservativeForProgress Says: Just as it took time for economists to look back and determine that the current recession started in late 2007 or early 2008, they will be able to look back in a few months and see that the recovery began in November or December of 2008, before any of the Obama spending spree went into effect.

Prove it. Yeah, we know that you cannot. Your political affiliation relies on faith, not evidene, logic or even an ounce of common sense…

  11. pbeeg says:

CfP, since there’s a strong psychological component in the financial markets, it’s quite legitimate to say that the recovery could well have started in November 2008; i.e., with the election of Barack Obama. Much as a company’s stock will rise upon the appointment of a new CEO long before any of his or her reforms go into effect. Simply knowing that there’s somebody competent who will actually make much needed changes will improve company’s credit rating, cash flow and fiscal health.
That’s also why a stock will actually go down on the release off a positive earnings report. It’s “Buy on the rumor, sell on the news.”
Consumer spending may well have gone up before the stimulus money got even allocated, because a whole bunch of people may have concluded that we’re not going over the cliff after all, that we have a competent hand on the steering wheel. So the money (possibly for needed things) got spent as people moved bit out of free-fall disaster mode.

This does not mean that promises are all you need to boost the economy. If the investment is not made, things crash worse than before.

People make money in the financial markets by anticipating trends. And the boost in the markets, and in the economy, that future actions will have good effects is not an indication that those future actions don’t have to be taken.

    Fool me once…

  12. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

CFP are you suggesting that Johnny McCain saved the economy when he suspended his campaign and rode into Washington on his white horse with both guns a blazing? You are pathetic with your mental contortions.

“All this rash of spending will do is slow the recovery …”

I see you are no student of history either. It was by slowing spending during the early stages of recovery after the Great Depression in order to placate the GOP that caused the slowdown of recovery. Most economists agree that if spending levels had remained where they were, recovery would have been substantially quicker.

It’s pretty funny when you blame Obama for overspending and in the next breath you blame Obama for cutting spending. A fool to the very end CFP. Don’t ever stop being you!

I saw that too at Huffington Post. They quoted Time Magazine as the source of the quote that Joe was leaving the GOP for spending too much money. I laughed at that, since it isn’t exactly news that Reagan and the Bushes drove up the deficit… I’d like to think he’s about to shut up, but I doubt it… I think he’s going to start his own ‘think’ tank LOL

    ____________________________________________________________

A long shot, at best. How often does a member of Congress get appointed to the Supreme Court? Especially one with no judicial bench experience, no matter how brilliant a legal mind he has? Regardless of gender or race?

Reading about Bobby Scott in the linked article (I confess I knew nothing about him before), I admit I liked what I read. He probably does have a brilliant legal mind, and he has a reputation for fairness and knowledge of constitutional law. He appears to possess many of the characteristics I’d like to see in a Supreme, if what I read is true.

But without any experience as a judge, and as a black man promoted by the Congressional Black Caucus, he would be seen as another Harriet Miers, which would trash his political career unfairly if he was appointed. Does Conyers really want to sacrifice him on that altar?

    Cfp,
It could indeed–if you want to try to make the case that a)Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, Merril Lynch and AIG all went bankrupt because of the mere possibility of Barack Obama getting into the White House. There actually might be something to that, if these folks were scared to death of an administration investigating their criminal fraud…

Of course, to do that, you have to assume that Obama’s election was a foregone conclusion and that the financial markets saw clearly that John McCain had zero chance of winning the election.

That’s getting cause and effect mixed up, of course–Obama’s lead widened because of the financial collapse–but your scenario has its fun side, namely that the recession is really Sarah Palin’s fault!

    _____________________________________________________________

“Just as it took time for economists to look back and determine that the current recession started in late 2007 or early 2008…”
    – So now you’re admitting the current recession started well over a year ago? It seems to me that many of us were feeling the recession back then, but conservatives and “their” economists were vehemently denying it. Phil Gramm even went so far to label it a “mental recession” and called us a “nation of whiners”.

“…they will be able to look back in a few months and see that the recovery began in November or December of 2008, before any of the Obama spending spree went into effect.
    – It depends on how you define “recovery”. That term is ambiguous enough that it pretty much allows you to move the goalposts wherever they’re most advantageous to your agenda — even if you move them completely off the field. And of course you add to the ambiguity by your pronouncement of “a few months”. Yes, the election of Barack Obama sowed seeds of confidence and our recovery could very well be traced back to that. But most of us don’t see “recovery” when the seeds are planted, we see it when the crop is being harvested.

“All this rash of spending will do is slow the recovery and lead to the next recession as our children and grandchildren struggle to pay off this massive debt.”
    – So now you’re a born-again debt concern evangelist? We’ve been screaming about the skyrocketing national debt for years. Where were you? Look — we don’t like massive spending any more than you do. Unfortunately, it’s the only way out of the mess the last administration got us into. At least we console ourselves with the knowledge that this spending is an investment in ourselves, with some hope of return. As opposed to Bush’s spending, which all went into various black holes of war, no-bid contracts to friends who spent money like it was water, and fat-cat corporations who socked it away in off-shore accounts — offering no return.

    _____________

Do kindly explain why companies making multibillion-dollar profits need tax breaks to stay competitive. The energy companies have been getting a free ride for far too long. It’s time they paid their fair share of taxes.

And there’s no guarantee that they’ll pass along these costs to their customers. Sure, some companies might raise their prices, but others may not, which will encourage price competition until they reach a new equilibrium.

See, that’s how the free market works. Or do you prefer the socialism of corporate welfare?

CFP thinks that we are concerned about the possibility that Pelosi was aware of the Bush Torture Program. I’m sure I speak for many regulars here when I say that if it is proven that she was involved and had the legal authority to expose the program then let her face the music. However it it is proven that the Bush WH used blackmail to obtain her cooperation (like Harman) then it gets a bit sticky. This would explain her rise to Speaker and her insistence that impeachment be off the table.

    Jonathan Turley:
“What is so striking is how easy the (previous) White House has set up these experienced members. The White House knew that the domestic surveillance program and torture were crimes. It, therefore, sought to bring in top democrats to invest them personally in keeping the matter secret.”

Y’all give too much credit to CFP.

All he has to do is look at a graph of the Dow or S&P500 for the last 10 years. It was level as Clinton left office. It started dropping a couple of months into Bush (long before 9/11 BTW). By early last year, it had almost regained what it lost under Bush, but then started falling and fell precipitously in the late summer of last year.

When Obama came in office, it was falling, but the fall seems to have bottomed a few months after Obama was in office (after he put in various payments).

The other thing that is really interesting is to look at the recent 2-term presidents (Clinton, Reagan, Bush) and see how the market did under their presidency.

Reagan – 1st term was so, so, but then picked up and did well for the 8 years.

Clinton – did well both terms.

Bush – left office with market 20% down from when he took office. All the time saying the fundamentals of the economy are strong.

But of course, if we don’t teach our children to think and to review data, they’ll just parrot what they hear – kind of like CFP
