Conservative Talker Bill Bennett: Rush Limbaugh Is ‘An Entertainer’
Saturday night, at the White House Correspondents Dinner, comedian Wanda Sykes responded to Rush Limbaugh’s stated hope that Obama’s presidency is a failure, by jokingly remarking, “I hope [Limbaugh's] kidneys fail.” On CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, conservative talker Bill Bennett objected to the joke, asking rhetorically, “What the hell was that?” Bennett called her joke “way over the line” and then asked, “[C]an we get to a point where we can at least put some decency in our remarks?”
Danna Brazille responded to Bennett saying, “She was trying to make fun of someone who makes fun of everybody. … She’s an entertainer. She was entertaining.” Bennett retorted:
BENNETT: So is Rush an entertainer, but you’re happy to criticize him! … What would have Wanda said that would have offended you?
Today, on his radio show, Bennett replayed the exchange. Bennett added, “By the way, what has Rush ever said that’s not repeatable? Disagreeable, yes. Off the mark, occasionally. … But not repeatable? I can’t think of anything he said that was not repeatable.” Listen here:
Bennett ought to be careful referring to Limbaugh as “an entertainer.” When RNC Chairman Michael Steele gave Limbaugh the “entertainer” label, Limbaugh lashed out at Steele saying that he was not the “head of the Republican Party” and that he should realize that his job is not be a “talking head pundit.” Steele nearly immediately apologized. A number of members of congress including Reps. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) and Todd Tiahrt (R-KS) were forced to apologize as well after making similar comments.
More to Bennett’s point, if he hasn’t heard Limbaugh make any remarks that “aren’t repeatable” or that lack the measure of “decency” that he requires in his entertainers, he hasn’t been listening to Limbaugh’s show. Indeed, just last week, Limbaugh repeated his offensive claim that the only reason Gen. Colin Powell endorsed Obama in the 2008 election was his race. Limbaugh similarly argued in 2003 that the only reason the media was interested in Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was because he is black.
Limbaugh’s ability to offend, however, does not end with race-based commentary. In 2007, Limbaugh called veterans who advocated for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, “phony soldiers” and in 2006 falsely accused “Michael J. Fox, who has Parkinson’s disease, of ‘exaggerating the effects of the disease‘” for political purposes. Media Matters has much more on Limbaugh’s many other offensive remarks.

I agree that any time an “entertainer” hopes for another person’s death or hopes another person suffers grave physical harm, it’s over the line. And while I thought most of Wanda’s jokes were pretty funny that night, I admit that one bothered me.
But I think if we’re going to request that Wanda Sykes (or any other entertainer) “put some decency” in her remarks, it’s only fair that Rush do the same. In fact, we should let him go first. Age before beauty, you know.

For the sins of their inhabitants Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim were destroyed by “brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven” (Genesis 19:24-25). In Christianity and Islam, their names have become synonymous with impenitent sin, and their fall with a proverbial manifestation of God’s wrath (Jude 1:7, Qur’an [1]).
Sodom and Gomorrah have been used as metaphors for vice and sexual deviation. The story has therefore given rise to words in several languages, including the English word “sodomy”, a term used today predominantly in law (derived from traditional Christian usage) to describe non-vaginal intercourse, as well as bestiality.

The Biblical text
Sodom was one of a group of five towns, the Pentapolis (Wisdom 10:6): Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboim, and Bela — also called Zoar (Genesis 19:22). The Pentapolis region is also collectively referred to as “the Cities of the Plain” (Genesis 13:12) since they were all sited on the plain of the River Jordan, in an area that constituted the southern limit of the lands of the Canaanites (Genesis 10:19). Lot, a nephew of Abram (Abraham) chose to live in Sodom, because of the proximity of good grazing for his flocks (Genesis 13:5-11).
In Genesis 18, God informs Abraham that he plans to destroy the city of Sodom because of its wickedness. Abraham pleads with God not to destroy Sodom, and God agrees that he would not destroy the city if there were 50 righteous people in it, then 45, then 30, then 20, or even ten righteous people. The Lord’s two angels found only one righteous person living in Sodom, Abraham’s nephew Lot. However they also saved his wife and two youngest daughters. Consequently, God destroyed the city.
In the Tanach version, Genesis19:4-5, the final episode in the story of Sodom is described as the angels visit Lot to warn him to flee:
When they had not yet retired, and the people of the city, the people of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, the entire populace from every end [of the city]. And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, and let us know them.”
Lot refused to give the visiting angels to the inhabitants of Sodom. He offered them his two daughters instead, but the people refused. The men were struck with blindness, allowing Lot and his family, who were then instructed to leave the city, to escape. As they made their escape the angels commanded that Lot and his family not look back under any circumstance. However as Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed with fire and brimstone by God, Lot’s wife looked back longingly at the city, and she was instantly transformed into a pillar of salt.
In Ezekiel 16:48-50 God compares Jerusalem to Sodom, saying “Sodom never did what you and your daughters have done.” He explains that the sin of Sodom was that “She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me.”
The view of Josephus
Flavius Josephus, a Romano-Jewish historian, wrote something along the lines of:
Now, about this time the Sodomites, overwhelmingly proud of their numbers and the extent of their wealth, showed themselves insolent to men and impious to the divinity, insomuch that they no more remembered the benefits that they had received from him, hated foreigners and avoided any contact with others. Indignant at this conduct, God accordingly resolved to chastise them for their arrogance, and not only to uproot their city, but to blast their land so completely that it should yield neither plant nor fruit whatsoever from that time forward.

and Josephus recounts that when angels came to Sodom to find good men they were instead greeted by rapists[2]:
And the angels came to the city of the Sodomites…when the Sodomites beheld the young men, who were outstanding in beauty of appearance and who had been received into Lot’s house, they set about to do violence and outrage to their youthful beauty….Therefore, God, indignant at their bold acts, struck them with blindness, so that they were unable to find the entrance into the house, and condemned the Sodomites to destruction of the whole population.

He says how beautiful it was before everything was burned up, and how rich the towns were in the area. Josephus described what had happened:
Now this country is then so sadly burnt up, that nobody cares to come to it… It was of old a most happy land, both for the fruits it bore and the riches of its cities, although it be now all burnt up. It is related how for the impiety of its inhabitants, it was burnt by lightning; in consequence of which there are still the remainders of that divine fire; and the shadows of the five cities are still to be seen, as well as the ashes growing in their fruits, which fruits have a colour as if they were fit to be eaten: but if you pluck them with your hands, they will dissolve into smoke and ashes

In Islamic tradition, the nephew of Ibrahim (Abraham) is known as Lut (Arabic: ) and was a prophet. According to the Qur’an, Lot was sent as a prophet to warn his people (that is, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah) to turn from their evil acts. The story appears in the sura Hud, the 11th chapter of the Qur’an; the major focus of Hud is stories of prophets sent to warn their countries to worship only God, and God punishing the nations afterward.
The Qu’ran does not go into great detail about Lot’s people, assuming that readers are familiar with the background story. Lot offers them his daughters, but they respond with disinterest and say that Lot “knows what we want.” The full account as translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali:[4]

By understanding your true Self, by coming to know one’s own undying soul, one then arrives at the knowledge of Brahman itself; the key to understanding the nature of the one unitary principle of the universe is to see one’s (undying) self as identical with Brahman: “aham asmi Brahman”: I am Brahman.
Here’s the equation: Brahman=Atman=atman. Brahman is the totality of the universe as it is present outside of you;, Atman is the totality of the universe as it is present within you; Brahman is the totality of the world known objectively, Atman is the totality of the world known subjectively. This equation fundamentally underlies the whole of Krishna’s teachings concerning dharma in the Baghavad Gita
In the later development of Hinduism, Brahman would become one aspect of a triune god and would represent the creation aspects of that god.

I understand that it might have been the perfect set-up for an attack on Limbaugh’s views, but I’m not sure they would have been so controversial if they had been said outside of the dinner’s format.
Sykes is a comedienne, I will admit that. However, Bennett’s association of Sykes to Limbaugh doesn’t hold water. Sykes is paid to tell her off-color jokes, although again I find it debatable that she was justified in saying them at a high-profile dinner. Limbaugh is paid to talk about politics, and even if he jokes about things, his listeners take what he says quite serious. If he was truly an entertainer, his listeners would be laughing instead of being incited.
Begrudgingly, I do think that Sykes needs to apologize about her joke, as long as she points out that Limbaugh’s words are just as spiteful, if not worse, than her own. It would be nice to see her turn the other cheek, as long as Limbaugh does the same.
Of course, that won’t ever happen. Limbaugh’s ego is so big it could start its own radio program.

The new, over-the-counter God is more accessible than acid, mushrooms,or peyote. The new profits hath spread the gospel by making their testament, where once there were warnings. The apostles of the New God at least have the sense to spread the word that they need babysitters when they go to hallowed ground, but it appears that they’ve never met an acid casualty and do not understand the dangers of excess or the wrath of combining gods.

Moderate is really no stance at all. It’s going along and giving in to attempt to keep everyone happy. Sometimes this is fine, when there are not big issues at stake- and sometimes it means doing what you know is completely wrong.
I think we’re talking about bigger issues here.

I understand that one of the most annoying side effects of the kool-aid is the inability to separate “President Obama” from “the Country”. Lets take this slowly.
1. “President Obama” and “the Country” are two different entities.
2. Because #1. above is true, its okay to wish that “President Obama” fails. Let me clarify what “I wish President Obama fails” means. It means I wish what I believe are his bad economic policies never become law.
Do you see now how saying “I wish President Obama fails” cannot possibly be, and really shouldn’t be, mistaken for wishing the country fails?

Wishing the President fails (again, fails in his attempts to enact bad economic policies) can be compared to
1.Going to a wedding and wishing the bride and groom fail to continue some behavior that I think may lead to divorce.
2.Going to a birthday party and wishing the birthday person fail in their attempts to continue smoking cigarettes.
You see what I mean?
Its about failing in some activity that will do harm to what is most important, or beyond just one person.

As noted by John Stewart, torture doesn’t bother them because its effective, yet the Sean Hannity’s of the world who can stand up to waterboarding and other torture techniques are way too weak to be able to withstand a joke that cuts too close to the bone. They want to argue that the new definition of socially acceptable behavior is that that if it works its ok, yet now we learn that if it works too well its “over the line”.
What I want to know is why DID Rush Limbaugh have a plane ticket he never used on 911? After all, there has been much documented evidence that he was strung out on oxycontin. He openly admits he’s a drug abuser and continues to suffer from tremors, as everyone observed by his bouncing up and down during a recent republican rally. Its among the traits that the dodo heads admire him for.
