White House distances itself from Wanda Sykes’s joke about Rush Limbaugh.
At the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night, comedian Wanda Sykes raised eyebrows with her controversial joke about Rush Limbaugh. Sykes joked that “maybe Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker, but he was so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight.” Several media outlets began saying that Obama seemed to “like” Sykes’s joke. However, in today’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that the administration thought Sykes’s joke went too far:
I think the President — I haven’t talked specifically with him, but my guess is, Jeff — I think there are a lot of topics that are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy. I think there’s no doubt that 9/11 is part of that.

From what I can see up top it looks like Gibbs did a pretty good job of brushing aside the Rush aspect and just says that jokes about 9/11 are inappropriate?

Forbidding jokes on the subject, by contrast, is an admission of defeat.

May 11th, 2009 at 2:51 pmI probably wouldn’t have made (or laughed at ) any 9/11 jokes — there are still a lot of people who haven’t healed from that awful day. Especially since there are so many other potshots that could have been taken at Rush Limbaugh.
However, considering a lot of the hateful things Limbaugh says on a daily basis, I would think he should be able to take it as well as dish it out.
I’m a bit surprised that it’s this joke that stirred some outrage — I was more offended by the line of “hoping (Limbaugh’s) kidneys fail.” Wishing death or grave harm to another human being is over the top, no matter how loathesome the target is. It’s for this reason that I’ve never joined the chorus of calling for Cheney’s heart to fail. No matter how tempted I’ve been.

The “terrorist” comment was equally tasteless. It was wrong when the Right tried to imply Obama was “pal’ng around with terrorists,” and it’s wrong for the Left – even as “comedy” – to imply Rush is one as well.

I suspect you’re right — and to me, Rush’s drug addiction is fair game. Especially with his history of railing about how drug users should be thrown in the slammer and the key thrown away.
It’s a pity Wanda tied it to the 9/11 angle. But let’s get something straight — I’m not objecting to her “20th hijacker” reference because it was unfair to Limbaugh, I only object because it was unfair to the 9/11 survivors and the victims’ families.
Still, I don’t think Wanda needs to be strung up for this. She told a number of jokes that were really funny (I loved the Sarah Palin barb). The WHCA is an event where zingers fly freely, and nothing should really be taken seriously. Anybody who claims they have been mortally wounded by this needs to get a grip.

Take the Federal Estate Tax for example. Not only is it a redistribution of wealth that has already been taxed… it forces families of many small business to sell the business in order to pay the estate tax, thus making it easy for large corporations to buy them up. I certainly don’t object to exposing anyone to anything as far as education… I just wouldn’t ridicule someone for wanting to home-school their child and act like that is abuse. Plenty of children in public school are abused as well. I do agree there needs to be more incentive for students to excel in Physics, Math, and the Bio-sciences.

Obama went to private school, along with most of the lawyer politicians in Washinton. Or Catholic school. I went to public school and most of the teachers there were pretty poor… although there were exceptions. In my opinion, public school was a joke and college was an immensely better experience.
I will say one thing that you may find strange. If we have public school… then I think the money should be evenly distributed… why should richer communities have better PUBLIC educations when you are using a PUBLIC model.

I’m not completely opposed to the Fair-Tax idea, which provides a rebate up to the poverty level and then puts a sales tax on all goods… but truthfully I haven’t really researched it much, nor do I think the tax and attorney industries would ever allow it to happen.

On the flip side of that statement, you can’t blame the President or anyone for laughing a little or as he did, smile a little. When she delivered it it did sound kind of funny. She has that way of making the outrageous sound funny. So it takes you a minute to say “hey, wait a minute, what’d she just say?”.
I laughed when I heard her say it for a minute. She wasn’t making fun of 911. She was making fun of Limbaugh. She was calling him a terrorist.
And considering how many times recently that Limbaugh has called liberals, and even the President terrorists, on retrospect maybe it was a little funny.
Poor taste, no doubt.
But no one but liberals complain when Limbaugh calls them terrorists. No one is shocked when he calls for failure, accuses the President of being a terrorist or in league with terrorist (which is the same thing).
All these people on Fox News and on the right have no problem calling Limbaugh a hero when he accuses others of being terrorists, so really, at the end of the day, what’s wrong with calling him one?
It was a dumb idea to hire her, and it was a stupid thing for her to say at that sort of affair with the President present.
But it wasn’t necessarily the wrong thing to say.
