Lieberman breaks with Cheney: ‘We’re not less safe’ under Obama.

Yesterday on CBS’s Face the Nation, former Vice President Cheney repeated his claim that President Obama is making the country less secure. Notably, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), who has largely agreed with Cheney on national security policy, disagrees. Today on MSNBC, Lieberman said the U.S. is not less safe under Obama:

LIEBERMAN: No, we’re not less safe. I suppose that’s the short answer, and probably as good as I can give. I disagree with some of the things the administration has done. Even in the closing of Guantanamo, they’re being very methodical at this point.

“Our guard is up,” he said. “On balance, we remain as safe as we can possibly be in a world in which there is Islamist extremists who want to attack us.” Watch it:

Former White House press secretary Dana Perino also has broken with Cheney. “One last question I need a yes or no. Do you feel safe under President Obama?” Bill O’Reilly asked her on Friday. “So far, yes,” Perino responded. (HT: Politico)

That resounding “thud” you heard was the flop coming from Lieberman’s flip last year.

Nonetheless, Droopy Joe is still a shade more tolerant that the Lieberman in the Israeli government.

Thnigs that make you go, “HAHAHAHAHA! In your face motherfluckers!”

Or disgruntled veterans who want to blow up federal buildings. Or psychos who want to send anthrax through the mail. Or anti-abortionists who set off multiple bombs at women’s clinics. Or…

BTW, Joe, the word you need there is “Islamic”, not “Islamist”.

  5. noonan says:

Who is this “Joe Lieberman” guy? I’ve never heard from him before.

  6. P.D. says:

Lieberman is still around? I liked it better when he was in the darkness.

  7. whirlaway says:

Liebercrap must be feeling terrible now that another
self-serving turncoat, Arlen Specter, is getting all
    the attention…

  8. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

LIEBERMAN: No, we’re not less safe.

But you’re not willing to say, “We’re safer”? Tell the truth, Joe, do you actually feel safer under Obama, or do you prefer to hide behind a blustering bully like Bush?

  9. Buckie Boy says:

No body is actually “Safe”, do you really think Pres. Obama is at every boarder crossing, every radar tower, every airport, every shipping port just looking for the bad guys?

The Pres. has very little to do with the small stuff…

…he would be only responsible if he were “TOLD of an ATTACK” and “DID NOTHING” to stop it…

    …then yeah.

that sounds familiar, where could I have heard that before….mmmmm.

  10. Lunaluz says:

I’d like to address the issue of being safe. We aren’t safe, we have never been safe, we will NEVER be safe. Life is inherently unsafe. Freedom comes with cost, freedom is never free or safe. Safety is really just a concept thrown around politically, to appease the masses, there is no truth in it. No government will ever make you safe. The Neocons use this term to garner fear, to further their rule through fear, philosophy, while they whittle away at your civil liberties and shred the constitution to consentrate more and more wealth and power into fewer and fewer hands. Cheney is so full ‘o bullpucky. Ask him how safe his lawyer buddy was when he peppered him in the face with bird shot.

  12. Ape-Man says:

If cheney does not go before a court of law, and pay for his torture crimes, the terrorists win again. I think America is stronger than that. I think that the American justice system will do the courageous thing, prosecute cheney, and get the country safely back on coarse.

  13. Chessmaster says:

Mr. Lieberman, if you don’t flip on this, I’ll be happily surprised.

  14. hormiga brava chavez says:

Liebermann is very fickle – who cares what he thinks anyway.
I’m more worried about the Bush Crime Family roaming around free than I am about a terrorist attack. I do not like when they attach “Islamic” to the word extremist or terrorist. The religion of Islam does not teach murder or terrorism.

  15. Ape-Man says:

Cheney was very powerful, and cheney has his squad of assasins to protect him, but he tortured in the name of America and that won’t stand and he’s going under the bus.

  16. Arctic Ghetto says:

Mr Lieberman abandoned his party to join a gang of rogues and thieves, chief among them Cheney. Where is he to go now that their crimes are coming to light? With a tucked tail Lieberman scrambles.

We are less safe after eight years of Republican rule. Nationally, across the board, it will take years clean up the mess.

  17. Ape-Man says:

    @22 happily liberal Says:

Ya, that’s why a briefing titled “bin laden determined to attack while bush slumbers” got to bushies desk.

  18. RantingTommy says:

bush allowed our country to be attacked on 9/11

he then allowed another attack with anthrax

we are much safer now that the terrorists don’t have Dubya to use asa recruitment tool anymore

People like you are SO stupid, so simpleminded. Your world is a series of false dichotomies. Either it goes in the black box or the white box. Either you are all good or all bad and either you always do good or always do bad. Shheeesh. Usually you get over this simpleminded worldview about age five. Its all arrested development all the time for morons like you though

  20. EugeneDebs says:

Oh my God you are just a delusional brainwashed moron that spews whatever idiocy you have been programmed with no matter how ignorant it makes you look. My GOD you are stupid

As Republicans watch the response to Obama by the billions around the world and even Iran and Russia, now people are slowly changing sides if only for a short time. We just saw a Journalist who made the mistake of working for Fox News as she was asked to spy and she was in prison in Iran. No torture was done and she was allowed an appeal. Once the evidence showed she was being used by the Bush Fox News Station and she admitted what they asked her to do she was released. Now just think if the Bush Administration arrest a spy well he/she would be tortured and without charges keep for life. Makes you wonder which country was really the Axis of Evil Bush was talking about.

  22. KayInMaine says:

America was safe until George Bush was selected to office in 2001. 9/11/01 happened on his watch, the anthrax attacks happened on his watch, the stock market lost 8,000 points under his watch, and America went into financial crisis under his watch!

He has not made us safe. In fact, Clinton did until George Bush came along.

Dick Cheney hasn’t made us safe for 3 decades.

I will laugh my arse off if the country of Iran proclaims Fox News as part of their Axis of Evil!

  24. fletc3her says:

Let’s see, in 2009 have we had any major terrorist attacks on U.S. soil? No. During Bush’s tenure? Yes! In fact, Bush will be remembered as the President with the worst record of defending America.

  25. eyeswideopen1 says:

If Liebermann is against it then maybe it’s was the right thing to do.

  26. AtoZ says:

Maybe Joe L. understands in the U.S. with the Titanic 21% on republican party identification today, how this now plays out in his state. On a simple moral issue like torture Lieberman can not afford to lose his core constituents here. The current administration is now closer to the political middle than the previous lot on any moral issues.

Lieberman like Senator Specter does not need a democratic primary challenger as his independent dem status is now becoming a liability in Connecticut. He needs to support something and McCain in ‘08 was not his meal ticket. Badmouthing Obama would be a losing strategy like Limbaugh now does and will not pull any votes in Lieberman’s direction. Joe knows it is time to stop cutting bait and go fishing.

  27. Pennsylvanianne says:

Richard Clarke, a holdover from the Clinton administration, vainly tried to speak with the Bush-Cheney officials about the threat that Osama bin Laden posed before 9/11 and was roundly IGNORED. So much for keeping us safe on 9/11, Bush-Cheney!! And how about those anthrax attacks? They were never fully resolved, though officials blamed them on the scientist who conveniently committed suicide. I am glad Lieberman and Perino aren’t giving credence to Cheney’s outrageously untrue, self-serving remarks.

  28. Game of Life says:

This man is ickyfied. he is just a shylock looking for another repug.

his usefulness in the dem party is null. They call him ind in his state but to the rest of us he means sneaky back door bs.

  31. Evil Spaniard says:

Oh, I get it. the (I) means that he kisses the ass of the party of the President in charge. Slug.

  32. keepinon says:

The truth of the matter as I see it is that another attack could occur at any time. Hopefully it will not occur, and I’m sure the Obama administration is doing what it can to minimize the risk. Can the same be said of the previous administration? When we strayed away from Afghanistan and attacked Iraq over what was at best bogus intelligence, it would seem that we created another whole generation of would be terrorists for many successive administrations to be concerned about.

See what happens when you get your “news” from newshounds/liars?
Clinton policies were in place, einstein.

Right, Bush’s obsession with going after Saddam and his administration’s pooh-poohing of the terrorism threat had nothing to do with it, genius…

  35. Robt says:

And Joe Lieberman is a pillar of congressional trust and credibility?

  36. ucsbclassics53 says:

    happily liberal Says:
orangutan, clinton had first dibs on him long before that fake memo. Please, educate yourself.

oh I forgot, it was Clinton who penned that “fake memo” in order to embarrass Bush and to distract the American people from the fact that Clinton himself set up the Republican impeachment hoopla in order to set the United States up for 9/11…so he could blame Bush and the Republicans for 9/11 and for the fact he “supposedly” didn’t go after Bin Laden…he knew that having an affair and getting into impeachment hearings would allow his buddy, oh I forgot, Obama’s buddy, Bin Laden to work against the U.S. with impunity…

See, it makes sense! Clinton could then claim that the Republicans and the impeachment ruckus distracted him from going after Al Qaeda…and then he can have Bush blamed for 9/11…

Thanks for the edumacation…now I can claim my place as one of the sheep 20%ers…Where can I get my GOP talking points?
