On April 23, the Obama administration announced it would release hundreds of photos of detainee interrogation, obeying a court order from a lawsuit filed by the ACLU. Predictably, conservatives furious with the Obama administration’s attempt at greater transparency denounced the move. Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) wrote to President Obama asking him not to release the photos because they could inflame potential terrorists:
The release of these old photographs of past behavior that has now clearly been prohibited will serve no public good, but will empower al-Qaeda propaganda operations, hurt our country’s image, and endanger our men and women in uniform. We know that many terrorists captured in Iraq have told American interrogators that one of the reasons they decided to join the violent jihadist war against America was what they saw on Al-Qaeda videos of abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib,” wrote Graham and Lieberman.
Today, Liz Cheney, daughter of the former Vice President, decried the move as “appalling,” saying in a Fox News interview that the decision was proof Obama was aiming to “side with the terrorists”:
CHENEY: Clearly what they are doing is releasing images that show American military men and women in a very negative light. And I have heard from families of service members, from families of 9/11 victims, this question about, you know, when did it become so fashionable for us to side, really, with the terrorists?
Watch a compilation of conservatives complaining about the potential release of torture photos:
The photos of torture aren’t the root of the problem. After all — if you don’t torture, you don’t have torture photos. Notably, many of the figures decrying the release of photos have ardently defended the government’s right to torture people:
SEN. LIEBERMAN: “Most people think it’s definitely torture. The truth is, it has mostly a psychological impact on people. … [W]e ought to be able to use something like waterboarding.”
HANNITY: “I am having a hard time understanding, though, why dunking somebody’s head in water….just to scare the living daylights out of them… why would you oppose that?”
LIZ CHENEY: “[T]he tactics are not torture, we did not torture. The memos lay out the extent of exactly how far we could go before it would become torture because it was very important that we not cross that line into torture.”
LT. COL. BOB MAGINNES: “If we take away tools, whether actual tools or implied tools, from [American intelligence officials'] tool chest, and therefore undermine their potential effectiveness, then I think we hurt our whole cause.”
HUCKABEE: “It was like a carnival ride. … For example, it wasn’t that we were actually going to drown someone, but it was a simulation of it. And for that, there was in fact some information that came forth.”
In fact, Huckabee defended the utility of waterboarding within 30 seconds of agreeing with Hannity that Obama’s release of interrogation photos was “hurting our nation’s defenses.” Fox reporter Catherine Herridge said that “these pictures of humiliation” can be “a primary factor of suicide bombers.”
It’s not the pictures that recruits suicide bombers; it’s what the pictures depict. Torture — ordered by Bush and Cheney — damaged America and increased the risk of another terrorist attack, and revealing the truth of what happened doesn’t change that fact.
Let them whine, it just proves that they’re the pro-torture party.
May 12th, 2009 at 5:32 pmLet me get this straight–showing the evidence of a crime is actually worse than committing the crime?
May 12th, 2009 at 5:32 pmThat’s it, don’t let people see what actually happened! It might tarnish our reputation.
Like, maybe, if we hadn’t done it, our reputation wouldn’t have been tarnished?

May 12th, 2009 at 5:35 pmThe sickest part of these protests is not that these photos are being published (pretty sick in itself), they are outraged that they were caught.
Sorry, kiddies, if you didn’t do the deed, there would be no photos to squeal about.
May 12th, 2009 at 5:35 pmWhy doesn’t Liebermann just join the pro-torture party. Dems don’t want him!
May 12th, 2009 at 5:36 pmHuckabee’s comment is the best: A carnival ride, weeeee! Can we do it again daddy?

Yeah , I’m sure that families of service members and families of 9/11 victims are going to speak in that manner on the Obama administration , you sorry twit .
Obviously , the rotten fruit doesn’t fall far from the diseased tree………
May 12th, 2009 at 5:37 pm.
So, by their standards, referring to 9/11 and showing pictures of the events of 9/11 is far more outrageous than 9/11 was itself…
… Is this why these people refer to 9/11 and show the events of 9/11 in their propaganda ads so much?

Quit hiding behind our service members and 9-11 families. Republicans are cowards and scum. period.
And you can’t have it both ways, if it’s ok then your should have no problem showing it, if it’s wrong to show pics of what you are doing, then you shouldn’t be doing it.

May 12th, 2009 at 5:43 pmThey want Obama to ignore a court order?
Why we all know that the President is above the law…wait only the previous president, unitary executive guy, is above the law…right? Which one is it?
May 12th, 2009 at 5:43 pmKeep in mind, it wasn’t really torture, except that it was only a few bad apples, except that it was legal, except that it was really effective, except that the Democrats were in on it, except that it’s all Bill Clinton’s fault.

May 12th, 2009 at 5:47 pmThe torturers, yes, anyone that supports this torture, don’t want the pictures released because it will burn into the minds of everyone who sees the pictures that, Yes we did torture.
To talk about whither it was legal or effective is just an intellectual exercise. But once the American people see pictures of what was done in OUR NAME….. the intellectual exercise is over and “We the People” will want those who order and approved these WAR CRIMES persecuted……errrr prosecuted.
“The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.” – George Orwell

May 12th, 2009 at 5:48 pmOsama Bin Laden is somewhere laughing his ass off. By his attack on 911 he caused the greatest nation in the world completely dump the values that had made us great for over two hundred years. We began to torture, claim other human beings are not our equal, wire tapping our own citizens, abolish Habeas Corpus, etc. Osama doesn’t have to attack us to accomplish what he wanted to do. Bush started an unnecessary war to kill off our soldiers and took away our way of life to some degree. What part of this is so difficult to wingnuts?
May 12th, 2009 at 5:51 pmCFP? Proud? We’re all waiting? Have you boys taken enough of a beating today? Why aren’t you denying we torture but decrying pictures of torture being released? Have we reached the limit of your cognative dissonance?

This is exactly what describes the Republican way of thinking.
Doing things in order to keep a country safe is advantageous for the country, but that doesn’t justify it as legal on the global scale. If that was the case, every country would have a legal justification for genocide, declarations of war, and occupation.
And no, I am not suggesting that torture is as bad as those items nor are they meant to be lumped into the same category, as there needs to be two sides to every issue. Dismissing these interrogations as not torture is only one perception of the matter.

Yes that is exactly right it was supposed to remain our dirty little secret. The Iraqis for instance never KNEW they were tortured until we released the photos.
May 12th, 2009 at 6:04 pmWon’t they be outraged no matter what Obama does on the subject? If the court order was to not release the photos, they’d be outraged because he was breaking his promise to be more transparent.
The outrage from the con-men is that Obama is President and making decisions.
May 12th, 2009 at 6:04 pm“when did it become so fashionable for us to side, really, with the terrorists”?
Only an insecure and nationalistic boob would say something like that. There is so much wrong with that and the false assumptions this nit wit has baked into that statement. Ditz Cheney was pretty high up in the State Dept., correct? No wonder the last 8 years were so screwed up, with the Cheney fools running things. I mean Deadeye Dick has pretty much been tragically wrong about everything. When do we get to vote the entire Cheney clan off the island?
May 12th, 2009 at 6:06 pmThe fact that these right-wingnuts advocated “torture” but when they see the results of their advocacy they want to “cry foul.”
These Muslim extremist already knew that detainees being held by American’s were being “tortured” with or without the photos.
All I wanna see now is the Torture Administration in jail for their war crimes.
May 12th, 2009 at 6:08 pmPurple State Says:

No. There isn’t any other perception of the matter. Waterboarding IS torture. It was done in OUR NAME and in the name of The United States of America. Torture in OUR NAME puts America in the same class of countries as Cambodia under Pol Pot, Iraq under Saddam Hussein, and the Soviet Union under Stalin and now The United States of America under George W Bush and Dick Cheney.
Cheney and Bush, thank you very much for soiling America’s good name.
May 12th, 2009 at 6:08 pmThe USA is just evil, lets just admit it! We have them torturing, most of the people are obese and lazy and eat everyting in sight.

May 12th, 2009 at 6:14 pmI could have sworn Cheney stated that he WANTED more information released ‘to prove’ that ‘enhanced interrogations’ [torture] really worked and that they got information that PREVENTED another attack from happening on our soil. He did NOT SPECIFY the ‘type’ of data that should be released. Moreover, if he and his criminal gang DID NOT TORTURE, what problem is there in having as much information as possible put before the public for discussion? After all, he said they had done NOTHING WRONG, HE WAS PROUD OF WHAT THEY HAD DONE, AND HE WOULD DO IT AGAIN! Now let the public decide by releasing ALL the info be it photos, memos or other documents.

Americans are ’siding’ with terrorists – of all the excuses they have thus far cited, his has to be the most unnerving of all as they will now be able to place ‘GUILT’ you know the type of guilt a Jewish mother can place on her offspring] on those of us who have said and will continue to say, ‘TORTURE IS ILLEGAL’ under our laws.

I shot you down because you followed a sensible comment that ought to have merit (i.e. doing something about slave labor) by using an idiotic solution to the problem (raping child laborers).
Here’s something that you ought to do: judge a person by coming to their house, breaking bread with them, discussing a topic, then shaking their hand later and thanking them for their input and hospitality, even if the point of view is not your own. Don’t enter that house with a flare gun and kerosine.
And I would like you to come up to me and say what you just said. Because if my kidneys failed, I would use ethical practices. I wouldn’t illegally borrow from other cultures, and I certainly wouldn’t use some of the black-market practices used in America.
Judge not lest ye be judged.

May 12th, 2009 at 6:46 pmThis example of what constitutes outrage is what is wrong with us. I think that they do not want to see what they approve.
It’s much easier to think of what goes on at a distance. People that approve torture think of it as something like a movie and thereby diminishes any accountability. And after all the people that torture and the people that are tortured are strangers. And it’s an unpleasant thing, but someone has to do it. Right?
There is no legal ambiguity about torture. And there is no moral ambiguity. If we are going to be outraged about the something, it should be the right thing. These conservative and family values guardians for America. The conservatives in this country possess a sliding scale for right and wrong. And most especially for what is legal. As for me, I like knowing what is legal or illegal does not change when things become inconvenient. Matters of conscience are an individual thing. But the law is the law.

What an effective tool for interrogation? Show them pictures of Sirhan Sirhan, and tell them how long he’s been in US prison, with no chance of parole. Ask them if they said goodby to their families before they were captured, and then tell them they will never see freedom, if they do not co-operate. To them, that’s worse than death, because they will realize they will never see their families again, though they will live out their full lives in solitary confinement in an American prison.

How’s that going to work out in the long term I ask you sheeple?

May 13th, 2009 at 12:02 amWhat I find disturbing is that ‘we’ have been torturing by proxy for years, primarily by exporting ‘our’ knowledge of torture and financial backing for tortuous regimes…before bush & cheney came to town.
The CIA, USAID, the National Endowment for Democracy, The International Republican Institute, the Ford Foundation among others, have all, in one way or another, contributed to Torture Inc.
I find it sad that ‘we’ as a country aren’t more aware of ‘our’ own history in regards to torture and how it has been used, by proxy or otherwise to subjugate populations that were opposed to our corporatist policies and/or the policies of regimes backed by our govt.
May 13th, 2009 at 12:06 amHere’s something to think about regarding the fact that our actions are creating more terrorists.
If you had a family member that had been tortured, which situation would make you more willing to want to attack and kill the torturers?
A. The captors’ government continued the torturing.
B. The captors’ government denounced the torturing, released images showing the torture, and announced they were ending the practice.
I think most of us know the answer.
May 13th, 2009 at 12:15 amI’m freakin’ outraged by torture and by the photos. Not the release of the photos, or the memos. I’m outraged by the torture.
And I’m pretty pissed at the elected Democrats who keep standing off to the side murmuring “How do we deal with this?”
Deal with it as the moral failure it has been. Stand up and say “hell no, we won’t torture anymore. We were scared and made stupid decisions.” Now is the time to own up to it, bring in the sunshine, and then move on.
May 13th, 2009 at 1:15 amI love the hypocracy of fox news! the whole time that they claim the the photos will make us unsafe the show the released photos on fox news. And when more photos are released, they would pay for an exclusive on their release if they could. HYPOCRATES!!!!

I totally agree – and even more than that. These people attempted and are continuing to attempt to make their torture legal. The pictures need to be released. The people need to know who knew what and when they knew it. And we need to hear what the tortured and the torturers have to say. Just think, if McCain had stolen another election these creeps may have started going after us. Or maybe part of the motivation was to terrify and silence us.
May 13th, 2009 at 2:14 amDo any of these people that feel releasing the pictures is very bad and terrorists will learn how to withstand torture because the release has shown them what to expect?
Well, what about those tortured and released ?
Won’t they return home and tell of there experience at the hands of American torturers?
May 13th, 2009 at 2:20 amHouse No. 2: Explore Pelosi interrogation briefing
By LARRY MARGASAK – 8 hours ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House majority leader reluctantly agreed Tuesday that congressional hearings should investigate Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s assertion that she wasn’t informed, more than six years ago, that harsh interrogation methods were used on an al-Qaida leader.
Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., called Republican challenges to Pelosi’s assertion a diversion from the real question of whether the Bush administration tortured terrorist suspects. Nonetheless, he acknowledged the controversy should be resolved.
Democrats will hold a series of hearings on Justice Department memos released last month that justified rough tactics against detainees, including waterboarding — simulated drowning — and sleep deprivation.
While Democrats want the hearings to focus on what they call torture, Republicans have tried to turn the issue to their advantage by complaining that Pelosi and other Democrats knew of the tactics but didn’t protest. Pelosi was briefed in 2002 while on the House Intelligence Committee.
Hoyer, asked at a news conference whether Democrats were inviting political problems for themselves by holding hearings, said, “I think the facts need to get out.
“I think the Republicans are simply trying to distract the American public with who knew what when. My response to that is, look, the issue is not what was said or what was known; the question and focus ought to be on what was done.”
But he added that the controversy over “what was said and when it was said, who said it … is probably what ought to be on the record as well.”
Hoyer also was asked whether he believes Pelosi’s support has been undermined among Democrats.
“No, I don’t,” he said.
A Senate Judiciary subcommittee holds the first hearing on the interrogation policy on Wednesday, but has scheduled testimony unrelated to the Pelosi matter.
A CIA document made public last week shows that Pelosi received a briefing in September 2002 on the tactics used on Abu Zubaydah, an al-Qaida leader and one of three prisoners subjected to waterboarding. Pelosi said she was told the agency was discussing its legal right to use the tactic in the future.
“We were not — I repeat — were not told that waterboarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation methods were used,” said Pelosi, D-Calif.

Whats funny is Nancy Pelosi, quite the most horrid person besides Bush and Cheney
Approved of the waterboarding.
Jane Harman, who is democrat who tried to get Israeli groups to give money to Pelosi, her rival so that Harman could become head of the House Intelligence agency.
Harman months later after receiving the same briefing as Pelosi. Said “No WAY”
And personally wrote a letter asking if the President was involved. Pelosi would not attach her name to it.
LMAO, if you dont think that all of your govt. is involved in this torture. Pelosi certainly was.
Then let all of the memos out on intelligence on the issues and let the PEOPLE decide.
Selectively releasing a few memos to say Bush was bad is like groupthink here just cherrypicking stories for college freshman to mind control them into the “groupthink”
If you want to know the truth about the USA, dont selectively release memos. Let is all come out!
Then you will realize how horrible the USA is and why it should die a much deserved death. As it will. And should and how raping of Latin Americans and INdia/asia is not tolerable to feed your fat obese faces.
You are all complicite in this scam, like all Nazi guards. Everyone of you, every single American should stand before the court of the world and explain how you let this go on!
May 13th, 2009 at 2:22 amI doubt you will want that. A nation of cowards and lazy tards. The world will be better off without you
HappilyIgnorant spews more idiocy. What an ignorant punkass troll HI is. A stupid, cowardly moron

Well, that’s not true. I vote, and I don’t buy from companies that use illegal labor practices.
Seriously? We’re worse than the government that murdered 6 million people just because of their religion (not including the other 4 million they just didn’t like)? Or the one that murdered 20+ million because they dared to disagree with their leader?
Wow. That sucks for us then.
I’m pretty sure our immigration rates – both legal and illegal – pretty much discounts this. 233 years and still going strong. Personally, I’m more afraid of an earthquake than I am the US Constitution being overthrown.
But where would the Middle East get all its money if we’re not around to buy all their oil? Or China, if we stop buying all their stuff?
Well, I guess Canada could take our place, but eh. It’s too cold for me to want to move there. :D
May 13th, 2009 at 4:11 amwiley,
Yet no one will talk about how the “fixing the facts around the policy” committed suicide in Libia the other day…
… Shhhh. what America doesn’t know won’t hurt them, YES?
The Man Who Knew Too Much? A Convenient Suicide in a Libyan Prison
JURIST Guest Columnist Benjamin Davis of the University of Toledo College of Law says the claimed “suicide” in a Libyan prison of al-Qaeda operative Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi is too convenient for too many people who have besmirched American honor in a perversion of rule of law that came from panic and improvisation…..

May 13th, 2009 at 4:46 amGood morning right wing of America! Push your skirts down because you’re embarrassing yourselves again!
May 13th, 2009 at 6:52 amIf torture is just fine with these people (in fact, it isn’t torture at all, say most), then why do they have any problem at all with photos of something that’s either just fine, or never existed?
May 13th, 2009 at 9:39 amConservatives Outraged Over Release Of Torture Photos, But Not Over Actual Torture
Well of course, bank robbers are in favor of bank robberies, but they hate security cameras.
May 13th, 2009 at 11:41 amBut it does nothing but help al Qaeda.
Baloney. Hiding the pictures, when their existence is known does more harm.

Explain.
It’s called lack of trust. And by your own people no less. So instead of fighting one war, you’re now fighting two.
May 13th, 2009 at 12:49 pmal Qaeda already knows about the pictures, they’re not learning anything new. It matters not if the pictures are released to them, and it’s not like they don’t have a ton of other pictures of dead innocent citizens they can use to stir up support.
Lying to the American public OTOH weakens us here in our own country.
May 13th, 2009 at 12:51 pmWhy is it that conservatives are so consistently hypocritical?
Pro-life, yet they love war. Compassionate, yet they embrace torture.
It appears they have let the “bad guys” subvert their decent American morals.

Explain.
You’re really that dense? I fear an explanation would only serve to further confuse you, if you cannot reason why by yourself.
But here goes: if they know there are pictures in existence that we are refusing to release, they can propagandize that fact into an assertion that greatly overblows what is actually contained in the photos, and there is no way to rebut that assertion, without the evidence in hand.
See how simple? Why didn’t you see it?
Your partisan goggles all steamed up, with fake outrage?
May 13th, 2009 at 2:40 pmI could take a photo and Photoshop it to make anything I want. I could make a fake video of someone severing someone’s head too. Hollywood creates horror flicks all the time and THEY LOOK REAL!
The Nazi’s created propaganda in WWII to scare the opposition and to rally their supporters.
I don’t think releasing OR not releasing the pictures will change a thing with THEM. This is all about US in the USA.
