House Republicans: Look How Many Layoffs We Helped Create
Today, the Washington Post reported that “eleven weeks after Congress settled on a stimulus package that provided $135 billion to limit layoffs in state governments, many states are finding that the funds are not enough and are moving to lay off thousands of public employees.” Washington state will be forced to layoff several thousand educators and Massachusetts which “cut 1,000 positions late last year, just announced 250 layoffs, with more likely to come soon.”
Apparently missing the article’s point — that the stimulus should have included more budget stabilization funding for states — the House GOP featured the article on their website today, suggesting that the report vindicated their unanimous opposition to the recovery act. Later in the day, they linked to the article on twitter and gleefully quipped, “Look how many layoffs the stimulus created“:
In reality, of course, the economic recovery didn’t “create” layoffs at the state level. Had the recovery plan included no money at all for state level budget stabilization — as the House Republicans proposed — layoffs of public servants at the state level would have been far more widespread.
Further, as the Post makes clear, it was members of the Republican party and several conservative Democrats sympathetic with the Republican line on the recovery package that actively lobbied for reductions in state budget stabilization funding by $40 billion:
But in the Senate, the stabilization funding was cut by $40 billion to secure the support of the three Republicans who were needed for a filibuster-proof 60 votes — Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia J. Snowe of Maine and Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania — as well as to gain the support of conservative Democrats such as Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska
Susan Collins (R-ME) defended her efforts to slash the state stabilization funding, saying, “The fundamental purpose of the stimulus bill is to save and create jobs and help get our economy moving again. … The bloated House-passed bill stood no chance of passing the Senate.”

The DOW went up another 50 points today. The hemorrhage of jobs has slowed. Chrysler has a plan, GM is forming one, and the new Ford Focus could be the next Model T. There are actually some encouraging economic signs, though it’s going to be a long and painful recovery.
Now, if the current level of spending becomes institutionalized? That would be alarming. However, I haven’t seen anyone suggest that the current level should, or can, be maintained.

There’s an aversion to raising taxes on the middle class because they’re no longer taxable. Their job prospects have declined, their wages have stagnated and inflation has eaten away at their paychecks. Their income has been distributed UP. Reinvigorate the middle-class substantially and any tax increase could be spread across a wider base of millions at a minuscule amount. Any future tax increases on a recovered middle class would be easily absorbed into improving condition s greatly benefiting them. It wouldn’t make a dent if we could just improve things.

The White House doesn’t do 8 year budgets. The 10 trillion, or 13 trillion, or 19 trillion, depending on Reichwing source, dollar figure is based on continuing at the current level of spending without considering that spending can go down as the economy recovers. It’s not a simple matter of projecting this years budget into the future.
The “White House projection” you mention is a fraud. People have taken this years budget and simply carried it forward.

In case you weren’t paying attention during the Bush years (and it appears at first glance that you may not have been), Bush was funding his two wars off budget. They were funded almost entirely with emergency supplemental bills (which is just one of his many abuses of power.) President Obama (you keep misspelling his name) simply put the wars on the budget, and this is why the annual budget deficit went way up. The borrowing had been going on for years under Bush.

We are facing the accrued costs of that folly. But, hopefully, this crisis will force substantive change. Time will tell and, if our new leadership proves faithless, we’ll vote them out too.

Our current problems have been building for about 40 years. Republicans have been in the White House for 28 of those 40 years. They have controlled the House and/or the Senate for 32 of those 40 years.
During that time the Republicans have continued to move to the right. They have elected a man who ordered people to commit burglary, a delusional movie star, a spy who was never trusted to be a spy and his retarded kid.
They have embraced religious extremism, fostered hate against American citizens who don’t fit their narrow mold, and embarked on a effing Crusade against Islam.
I think it’s time for a fundamental change.

The equipment that our national guard units gave up for the war, and which probably be sent into Afghanistan? In order for that to count as “recovered”, they would have had to have been purchased specifically for the war. Otherwise they were already paid for and belonged to somebody, like some state’s militia.

What would you do? I wouldn’t of bailed out AIG, GM, or Chrysler(which is a private company owned by Europeans).
All that money was wasted. The infrastructure spending would be fine but it would be spent right away with open bidding.

More money in the hands of the people would mean more spending on products. The more spending create a demand for more products. More jobs to manufacture those products. Tax relief for companies who manufacture in this country and who increase employment. Sort of a trickle up policy.
Put the money in the hands of Americans, not the Government.
Let the people who earn the money keep the money. That would instantly stimulate the economy from the bottom up.

Considering the amount of equity the country has to write off, something has to be put on the table to fill the gap. These are very tough calls and Obama needs ideas and direction.

I think the bailouts had to be done but there needs to be rules in place to make sure that they don’t take advantage again. This wasn’t Obama’s doing. He’s just doing whatever he can to fix it. The spending in that arena came from Bush so I don’t think it’s fair to put it on Obama.
I understand the concern about the spending. It’s a legitimate thing to worry about but it’s hard for us to understand how you could be so mad at Obama spending for the purpose of helping this country out and providing for its citizens versus Bush spending on a war of choice, cutting taxes for his friends etc. See the problem?

Okay here is my opinion about this post. The GOP actually spent money hiring people to write this stuff. I get a kick out of the fact that they hire such incompetent morons. Although it is SO over the line that I suspect that the GOP has at least a few moles willing to bring the ship down from the inside.
Did anyone else notice how Obama/MSM diverted the conversation onto Nancy Pelosi to get people (even GOPers) into a frenzy about torture, so that they can do two things.
1-avoid talking about the defict.
2-Lynch the gonzalas, bush cheney group.
Obama is a lot smarter than GOPers give him credit for. If they don’t smarten up real fast they’re gonna epic fail. He’s got everyone wrapped around his little finger. He let them move all their pieces wherever they want but he’s always got checkmate just a move away.
There are a lot more people sympathetic to democratic Ideals: like free speech, Freedom of religion, Equal opportunity, and healthcare for not just the mega rich. BUT… None of those people seem to be voting in the only way that counts.. with their money. Corporations run elections more than anything else. TV is not entertainment its merely a system of marketing. if people stopped shopping at walmart and buying camel lights and being such ignorant rednecks the world would quickly snap into sanity. A sort of gluttony, if you will. Or say, when mom is on the phone and the child wants… no needs her attention. The child will do anything, even kick and scream.
However, the most effective way to deal with an idiotic rant of a troll is through the use of bad manners. Talking about them in their presence, but not to or at them. As if they are an insignificant gnat.
Now, however, it is important to know one flying bug from another. Many can be pests that carry diseases, like mosquitoes or horse flies. Those REQUIRE a swat and are best when put out of their misery.

My point is that all land has some value and some land is extremely valuable. $97.7 is less than I thought it was going to be. I am wondering if they count all the way out 200 miles offshore. Underwater land, Trump just had a seizure.

May 13th, 2009 at 3:25 pmThe numbers represent personal assets. Things owned by corporations are not in the mix except where individuals own shares which percolate up. Bill Gates may be on the high end of the asset scale.
My point is that most land in this country does not contribute to the GNP or a manufacturing base or jobs. All land has value but shouldn’t be considered when looking to fund jobs or make the economy grow. It’s mostly a stagnant resource until it’s sold or mined or is taxed when someone dies.
This excludes farm land of course. Most land in this country is owned by the Federal Government and your original post only mentioned “individual assets” not Government assets.
OBTW I don’t know anything about a mine in TN. I guess that was a dig, right?
