House Republicans: Look How Many Layoffs We Helped Create

Today, the Washington Post reported that “eleven weeks after Congress settled on a stimulus package that provided $135 billion to limit layoffs in state governments, many states are finding that the funds are not enough and are moving to lay off thousands of public employees.” Washington state will be forced to layoff several thousand educators and Massachusetts which “cut 1,000 positions late last year, just announced 250 layoffs, with more likely to come soon.”

Apparently missing the article’s point — that the stimulus should have included more budget stabilization funding for states — the House GOP featured the article on their website today, suggesting that the report vindicated their unanimous opposition to the recovery act. Later in the day, they linked to the article on twitter and gleefully quipped, “Look how many layoffs the stimulus created“:

In reality, of course, the economic recovery didn’t “create” layoffs at the state level. Had the recovery plan included no money at all for state level budget stabilization — as the House Republicans proposed — layoffs of public servants at the state level would have been far more widespread.

Further, as the Post makes clear, it was members of the Republican party and several conservative Democrats sympathetic with the Republican line on the recovery package that actively lobbied for reductions in state budget stabilization funding by $40 billion:

But in the Senate, the stabilization funding was cut by $40 billion to secure the support of the three Republicans who were needed for a filibuster-proof 60 votes — Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia J. Snowe of Maine and Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvaniaas well as to gain the support of conservative Democrats such as Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska

Susan Collins (R-ME) defended her efforts to slash the state stabilization funding, saying, “The fundamental purpose of the stimulus bill is to save and create jobs and help get our economy moving again. … The bloated House-passed bill stood no chance of passing the Senate.”

  6. ranus69 says:

If the GOP hadn’t demanded $40 billion to be cut from the original stimulus budget it would have been enough.

Pelosi was correct when she said more stimulus money will be needed after she saw that the three GOP demanded that $40 billion be cut.

To think that the neo-cons REFUSED to vote YES for the stim in the first place, the Dems had to LOWER the AMOUNT OF FUNDING for this issue thinking the neo-cons would vote yes with them, however, NOW they are crying over the LACK of ENOUGH MONEY to keep from laying off public employees. Why is it they ALWAYS want their cake and eat it too? Oh, I remember, because they had it that way under Bush and believe things should still be the same under Obama! How utterly ignorant they are!

After years of noncompetitive bidding for huge Federal contracts, cutting taxes during a time of war, and syphoning taxpayer money to company coffers the Republicans have suddenly become prudent budget philosophers. Their offered solutions are the policies that brought disaster in the first place.

  18. pbeeg says:

They will just try anything that comes to mind, won’t they?
The stimulus bill will bankrupt our grandchildren–and is causing layoffs now!
They can’t take a coherent position–like saying that sure, it’s going to give some aid now, but it’s bad policy down the road, and our children will pay for it.

No, it’s got to be bad both now and later.

It’s like national health care. they argue that it will both give us miserable horrible health care–and it’ll bring socialism because the people will like it too much.

They will never admit they did anything wrong, even if they will ultimately profit by that admission. Thy will never say anything bad about Rush, even if it’s good tactics if you’re going to rebrand.

They’re like the monkey and the nut. You capture a monkey by putting a nut inside a bottle. The monkey reaches in to grab the nut–but its hand is too large, holding the nut to take it out of the bottle. All the monkey has to do to escape is to release the nut, but it can’t bring itself to do that, and so is caught.

The Republicans just can’t loose their hold on the nut. Not even if it means the end of the party.

Think about what’s going on right now: all the experts say torture doesn’t work and is in fact illegal, yet the crazy pundits think their unqualified opinion takes precedence. Evidence means nothing when they’re in the debate.

Hence, funds to keep payrolls infused cost jobs. Run with that to the Olympics, neonuts.

During the debate, your party claimed that there was too much spending even though President Obama compromised not only on the spending figure, but in tax cuts (consisting of 30%). That still wasn’t enough for the republicans because they didn’t mirror bush’s tax cuts.

The bill of the present will come due when your grandchildren and Great grandchildren are trying to earn a living. Obie quadrupled Bush’s spending in the first 60 days of his administration. He spent so much money that they can’t even print enough money to cover it. There isn’t enough money in the country to cover it including all the wages, bank accounts, investment accounts and money of the rich.

The taxes will be massive, be paid by everyone, and last until the sun goes super nova.

That’s Obie for you. He hasn’t stopped spending yet, there’s more to come. Gas taxes, sugar taxes, real estate taxes, death taxes, capital gains tax, tobacco tax, alcohol tax, and on and on it will go. Enjoy Socialism.

They were right. It’s so much money that it is impossible to print enough to cover it. We have no money in the treasury to spend.

We can’t even cover the interest on it if we take all the money from the upper 5% who Obie says will pay for it. If you believe that and that it won’t reach the middle and lower class of this country then you are blind. It has already begun. We pay for the Democrat SCHIP bill with higher taxes on tobacco. Next is the increase in the gas tax and on and on it will go. There is no such thing as a free lunch but Obie don’t care. He just spends on this and spends on that.

What you fail to mention, stupid troll, is that future spending will go down because of increased revenues and general economic recovery. Heck! The DOW went up another 50 points today. The hemorrhage of jobs has slowed. Chrysler has a plan, GM is forming one, and the new Ford Focus could be the next Model T. There are actually some encouraging economic signs, though it’s going to be a long and painful recovery.

Now, if the current level of spending becomes institutionalized? That would be alarming. However, I haven’t seen anyone suggest that the current level should, or can, be maintained.

  62. Game of Life says:

this link is from the twitter tweak (or whatever it’s called)

Arizona has already laid off 800 social service workers this year and is facing the likelihood of deeper cuts over the next two. The state no longer investigates all complaints of child or elder abuse.

“Don’t be a child or a vulnerable adult in Arizona,” said Tim Schmaltz of the Protecting Arizona’s Family Coalition.

    And again…

Jake Thompson, a spokesman for Nelson, defended the stimulus, saying that forestalling state layoffs had not been its main goal. “This is a stimulus bill, not a state bailout bill,” he said. “While the economic recovery bill will undoubtedly help states with their budgets and employment, the primary intent was to stimulate the economy.”

The stimulus should have passed and been used for it’s intent.

The article suggested that repugs want to undermine its intent.

In some states, layoffs are occurring partly because legislators are not taking every step to avoid them. Republican lawmakers in Missouri want to use less than a third of the state’s $2.1 billion in flexible stimulus funds to close budget shortfalls.

Stupidity is no excuse Mega. Someone has to come up with the money. It will come from the printing presses because the Government has no money. It’s the peoples money they are spending and the people will be asked to foot the bill. That means you.

  64. Megaloptera McWars says:

Bush gave someone who makes $30,000 a year about $400 in tax breaks, so what’s your point?

There’s an aversion to raising taxes on the middle class because they’re no longer taxable. Their job prospects have declined, their wages have stagnated and inflation has eaten away at their paychecks. Their income has been distributed UP. Reinvigorate the middle-class substantially and any tax increase could be spread across a wider base of millions at a minuscule amount. Any future tax increases on a recovered middle class would be easily absorbed into improving condition s greatly benefiting them. It wouldn’t make a dent if we could just improve things.

You keep that thought pete as stupid as it is. Obie said that the “Stock market” is not an indicator of the economy.

10 trillion dollars has to come from somewhere. All the companies in the country, all the people in the country don’t have that much money combined.

Taxes, taxes, taxes and more taxes. The recovery is just a projection from the White House and they missed it by 66 billion dollars for the first year and revised the figure upwards. Don’t you keep up with the news?

My point is that someone has to pay for the spending sooner or later. There is not enough money in existence to cover Obies spending spree. Not for the next 100 years. It has to come from increased taxes from everyone. The tax increase on the rich only was a lie. He still has people like you believing it. How pitiful.

I’m not buying it, jay. It’s the typical ill-timed argument. The spending and neglect of the bush years (turning a surplus into a $500B deficit) necessitated this level of spending to catch up. Hands-off policies inevitably lead to a very expensive hands-on recovery. You’ve been printing money for years. It didn’t start on Jan. 20. Where is any of the bush deficit spending paying for itself, may I ask? And avoid the bush bot buzz-words like “freedom.”

That’s a cop-out pete. You keep those liberal talking points coming when you run out of arguments to back your nonsense.

Are you going to tax the sick person who is out of work and w/o health insurance? the homeless? the aging? the h.s. dropouts? No, you have to get them to work as healthy, educated people so they can make up the tax base. You have to save the dignity of retirement.

It’s not a simple matter of projecting this years budget into the future.

The “White House projection” you mention is a fraud. People have taken this years budget and simply carried it forward.

There are no Social Security funds either. The Government has dipped into that money back in the 90’s and Medicare is also broke.

I know more about accounting and the economy than you do it seems. You still have no idea where the money for today’s spending is going to come from.

Really? We’ll get the bullets we fired and the bombs we launched back? That’s good. Just think, if they had spent enough money on armored vehicles, we’d probably be even deeper in debt now. I guess it’s lucky for you we paid for that lack of armor with the lives of our soldiers.

I’d like you to provide some support for your contention that “most of the hard assets will be recovered.” Which hard assets are you talking about? The equipment that our national guard units gave up for the war, and which probably be sent into Afghanistan? In order for that to count as “recovered”, they would have had to have been purchased specifically for the war. Otherwise they were already paid for and belonged to somebody, like some state’s militia.

What would you do? I wouldn’t of bailed out AIG, GM, or Chrysler(which is a private company owned by Europeans).

All that money was wasted. The infrastructure spending would be fine but it would be spent right away with open bidding.

I would have a 6 month tax holiday for the masses. Every wage earner.

More money in the hands of the people would mean more spending on products. The more spending create a demand for more products. More jobs to manufacture those products. Tax relief for companies who manufacture in this country and who increase employment. Sort of a trickle up policy.

Put the money in the hands of Americans, not the Government.

Let the people who earn the money keep the money. That would instantly stimulate the economy from the bottom up.

    Just for starters.

The concern of mine is how the country got to this point, and what direction the country should go. Considering the amount of equity the country has to write off, something has to be put on the table to fill the gap. These are very tough calls and Obama needs ideas and direction.

    Hey Pete, the American Troll.
You completely missed my point of view. I am saying EVERY SING AMERICAN IS CULPABLE!
    Including YOU!
You, YES YOU! A TROLL on the world!

Its like it just doesnt ring a bell with your denial system. YOU man, YOU! You are part of the Evil USA EMPIRE! You should suffer as it crumbles.

What cracks me up about you USA windbags, is that all you have learned to do is point the finger at someone else. Look in the mirror!
How much do you have in the bank? How much do you have in charge cards debt?

What do you do that an Indian man cant do for 10% of the cost?

If you are like the average American. YOu are well in debt, obese and never cared as long as you could feed your fat faces.
Those days are over. And its not just one person’s fault. Its the fault of the AMERICAN PEOPLE!
    FAT LAZE OBESE FILTH! DEAL!

I appreciate the thought out response Jay, thank you. I’m not a big fan of the bailouts myself however, imagine all the jobs losses that would accompany the tanking of those companies. Not just within them but imagine the ripple effects.

I think the bailouts had to be done but there needs to be rules in place to make sure that they don’t take advantage again. This wasn’t Obama’s doing. He’s just doing whatever he can to fix it. The spending in that arena came from Bush so I don’t think it’s fair to put it on Obama.

I understand the concern about the spending. It’s a legitimate thing to worry about but it’s hard for us to understand how you could be so mad at Obama spending for the purpose of helping this country out and providing for its citizens versus Bush spending on a war of choice, cutting taxes for his friends etc. See the problem?

  144. Xisithrus says:

It was tried a couple of times but Barney Frank and Chris Dodd along with Maxine Waters squashed the attempt to investigate derivatives, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac who were behind the packaging of those mortgages.

True, they trie to quash it buyt why?

  145. pete says:

You see, speaking as a former Republican, I have identified the major difference between the two parties.

The Republicans have spent decades acting on what they are afraid someone else might do. Soviets, Cubans, Muslims, gays, atheists, moderates? All are enemies in the eyes of the GOP.

The Democratic party, on the other hand, has dealt with real-world events.

I don’t get any satisfaction from that conclusion. I wish we had two, or more, relevant parties in this great nation. Alas, we were recently controlled by a party that is morally, and intellectually, bankrupt. And now we all have to pay for the idiots who found themselves with so much power they didn’t deserve.

Reminds me of the old medical joke about the guy that went into the doctor b/c he had an orange dick.
Doctor ran all sorts of tests, biopsies. Sent him to a dermatologist.
Asked all sorts of questions. Then the dermatology specialist asked what he ate in his diet.

Maybe their efforts to provide “new” persona will actually inspire them to THINK. It’s a long shot but, I can afford to be optimistic once in a while.

Okay here is my opinion about this post. The GOP actually spent money hiring people to write this stuff. I get a kick out of the fact that they hire such incompetent morons. Although it is SO over the line that I suspect that the GOP has at least a few moles willing to bring the ship down from the inside.

Did anyone else notice how Obama/MSM diverted the conversation onto Nancy Pelosi to get people (even GOPers) into a frenzy about torture, so that they can do two things.
    1-avoid talking about the defict.
2-Lynch the gonzalas, bush cheney group.

Obama is a lot smarter than GOPers give him credit for. If they don’t smarten up real fast they’re gonna epic fail. He’s got everyone wrapped around his little finger. He let them move all their pieces wherever they want but he’s always got checkmate just a move away.

There are a lot more people sympathetic to democratic Ideals: like free speech, Freedom of religion, Equal opportunity, and healthcare for not just the mega rich. BUT… None of those people seem to be voting in the only way that counts.. with their money. Corporations run elections more than anything else. TV is not entertainment its merely a system of marketing. if people stopped shopping at walmart and buying camel lights and being such ignorant rednecks the world would quickly snap into sanity. I vote with every freaking dollar I spend. When America was going down the tubes in 2003-2004 I quit my job and started living off the state. There is no way I’m paying taxes in to fight a goddamned war for the oil companies. I drove less and buy from farms. Now that Obama became pres. I went back to college and graduated. and hopefully I can get a better job *crosses fingers*

    Snowman,
Responding(read feeding) directly to the idiotic ramblings of trolls and to them directly is a form of a positive feedback for them. They see this interaction as a permission to keep on. A sort of gluttony, if you will. Or say, when mom is on the phone and the child wants… no needs her attention. The child will do anything, even kick and scream.

However, the most effective way to deal with an idiotic rant of a troll is through the use of bad manners. Talking about them in their presence, but not to or at them. As if they are an insignificant gnat.

Now, however, it is important to know one flying bug from another. Many can be pests that carry diseases, like mosquitoes or horse flies. Those REQUIRE a swat and are best when put out of their misery.

    I hope this helps.

The Manchurian Candidate is a 1959 thriller novel written by Richard Condon, adapted into films in 1962 and 2004. It is about the son of a prominent political family who has been brainwashed into becoming an unwilling assassin for the Communist Party.

Captain Bennett Marco, Sergeant Raymond Shaw and the rest of their platoon are captured during the Korean War in 1952. They are all brainwashed into believing Shaw saved their lives in combat, for which he receives the Medal of Honor when they return to the United States. Years after the war is over, Marco, now an intelligence officer, begins to have a recurring nightmare in which Shaw murders two of his comrades while being watched by Chinese and Russian officials. When he learns that another platoon member has been having the same dream, he sets out to uncover the mystery.

The Communists intend to use Shaw as a sleeper agent and, using the queen of diamonds in a deck of playing cards as a subconscious trigger, compel him to follow their orders, which he does not remember afterwards. Shaw is controlled by none other than his own politically ambitious and domineering mother, who is working with the Communists in a plot to overthrow the U.S. government.

  195. right.wing.leftwing says:

House No. 2: Explore Pelosi interrogation briefing

By LARRY MARGASAK – 8 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House majority leader reluctantly agreed Tuesday that congressional hearings should investigate Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s assertion that she wasn’t informed, more than six years ago, that harsh interrogation methods were used on an al-Qaida leader.

Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., called Republican challenges to Pelosi’s assertion a diversion from the real question of whether the Bush administration tortured terrorist suspects. Nonetheless, he acknowledged the controversy should be resolved.

Democrats will hold a series of hearings on Justice Department memos released last month that justified rough tactics against detainees, including waterboarding — simulated drowning — and sleep deprivation.

While Democrats want the hearings to focus on what they call torture, Republicans have tried to turn the issue to their advantage by complaining that Pelosi and other Democrats knew of the tactics but didn’t protest. Pelosi was briefed in 2002 while on the House Intelligence Committee.

Hoyer, asked at a news conference whether Democrats were inviting political problems for themselves by holding hearings, said, “I think the facts need to get out.

“I think the Republicans are simply trying to distract the American public with who knew what when. My response to that is, look, the issue is not what was said or what was known; the question and focus ought to be on what was done.”

But he added that the controversy over “what was said and when it was said, who said it … is probably what ought to be on the record as well.”

Hoyer also was asked whether he believes Pelosi’s support has been undermined among Democrats.

    “No, I don’t,” he said.

A Senate Judiciary subcommittee holds the first hearing on the interrogation policy on Wednesday, but has scheduled testimony unrelated to the Pelosi matter.

A CIA document made public last week shows that Pelosi received a briefing in September 2002 on the tactics used on Abu Zubaydah, an al-Qaida leader and one of three prisoners subjected to waterboarding. Pelosi said she was told the agency was discussing its legal right to use the tactic in the future.

“We were not — I repeat — were not told that waterboarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation methods were used,” said Pelosi, D-Calif.

But her Opponent Tom Allen was a really really weak candidate. I heard him on the radio and he sounded like he was retired from life. I was in favor of the stimulus bill and Happy that my senators did the right thing. The GOP hates them but that okay with me. I’ve met both of them and Snowe is fairly Impressive. She seems smarter than the average bear. Collins is a lose canon that makes rash decisions. People lump them together but they shouldn’t because they are on different levels entirely.

In his first national broadcast interview, New York Times reporter David Barstow speaks about his 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winning expose of the Pentagon propaganda campaign to recruit more than seventy-five retired military officers to appear on TV outlets as military analysts ahead of and during the Iraq war. This week, the Pentagon inspector general’s office admitted its exoneration of the program was flawed and withdrew it.

    SHE KNEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was reportedly told in February 2003 by her intelligence aide, Michael Sheehy, that waterboarding was used on CIA detainee Abu Zubaydah, directly contradicting Pelosi’s account that she had never been informed of the technique’s use.

According to the report, Sheehy attended a briefing with California Rep. Jane Harman in February 2003 and discussed the use of waterboarding.

When the aide told Pelosi waterboarding had actually been used on the Al Qaeda terrorist, she didn’t object because she was not personally briefed on the matter, an unnamed source told CNN.

Pelosi then supported a letter drafted by Harman, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, and sent to the Bush administration, raising concerns over the technique, the network reported.

A CIA document made public last week shows that Pelosi received a briefing in September 2002 on the tactics used on Zubaydah, an Al Qaeda leader and one of three prisoners subjected to waterboarding. Pelosi said she was told the agency was discussing its legal right to use the tactic in the future.

“We were not — I repeat — were not told that waterboarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation methods were used,” said Pelosi, D-Calif.

The House majority leader reluctantly agreed Tuesday that congressional hearings should investigate Pelosi’s assertion that she wasn’t informed, more than six years ago, that harsh interrogation methods were used on the Al Qaeda leader.

  281. AaronQ of Maine says:

Its not socialist If you interpret “make” liberally. We already live in a mighty socialist country, people just refuse to see it. I never said everyone get the same car, or the same house. I know the russian model failed. and “hard labor” doesn’t always mean physical labor. and people can get labor waivers.

  282. Zooey says:

right.nut.left.nut I went to your website, and I think my computer has a virus now. You should really update that piece of crap site. None of the Images load and the layout is about as primitive as possible. I don’t think I’ll be heading back anytime soon. So what about DXM. Its a hippy drug that is a waste to study. Oh well, I guess someone’s gotta do it. like shoveling out the stables. (no you’re not Hercules).

  291. KayInMaine says:

Huh. Jay never posted a link to the bill he screeched about last night.

THE DEMOCRATS ARE RUNNING THE COUNTRY AND JUST LIKE THE CLINTON YEARS, OUR NATION WILL SURVIVE & PROSPER!

Jay, the stimulus money is slowly being sent out. THE 2010 BUDGET IS NOT IN EFFECT YET, MORON.

By the way, how are the RED STATES doing with the stimulus money? Let me guess…they’re spending it unwisely and will blame President Obama for no jobs being created, huh?

The state of Maine made sure part of the stimulus money would pay down our debt, which saved jobs. Those states who elected not to do this, may SEE MORE LAYOFFS. I bet the red states elected not to do this, right Jay?

  292. KayInMaine says:

GEORGE BUSH’S 2009 BUDGET IS CURRENTLY IN EFFECT. Anyone complaining? YEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  293. KayInMaine says:

    Current socialism:

    Social Security

    Healthcare for our soldiers

No wonder the wingnuts are complaining! Our soldiers are getting a free ride! Spit.

  294. misscoleopteramolly says:

I see this thread got troll-trashed overnight. Which made for some entertaining reading this morning.

I was especially amused by right.wing.leftwing, particularly at post #259. His obsession with Zooey’s genitalia in other posts was rather vulgar, but his assertion that he was some kind of well-educated genius while posting like a 14-year old that more than made up for it.

    Examples:

“your IQ is like zero based on the weschler binet iq scale.”
    – There’s a Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale, and there are Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales. There’s no such thing as a Weschler Binet Scale.

“I on the other hand, did 3 years of psych research on incoming freshman studying cognitive markers to depression following the model of Seligman’s Learned Helplessness Model. I assure you, someone does not pull that stuff out of their ass if they live in a trailer park.
    – No, they don’t pull it out of their ass. They look up this stuff on the Internet and then cut and paste. This guy wouldn’t know a cognitive marker from a felt-tip marker.

“Plus, I have a PHd and an MD.”
    – If he really had a Ph.D, wouldn’t he know how to write that correctly?

“I make more per year than you will ever make in a lifetime…”
    – Why do conservative trolls think this impresses anybody? Most people who REALLY make a lot of money find more subtle ways to brag about it — if they need to do so at all. Furthermore, most people of intelligence (which this troll purports to be) don’t use money as a measurement of what makes one person better than another. Anybody making this kind of statement reveals himself to be unemployed and blogging in mommy’s basement.

“I am quite surprised you wouldnt want to meat up.”
    – Another vulgar sexual reference? Or is this just lack of ability to spell?

I truly believe if trolls could see how ridiculous they look, they’d think twice about posting stuff that removes all doubt about their mental abilities. But then, they wouldn’t be trolls.

  295. Old Uncle Dave says:

The rich get richer and the workers get screwed. The corporate oligarchs own both parties. Banks and M-I complex get trillions, leaving nothing for the people. We’re not a democratic republic any more, we’re a corporatist (fascist) oligarchy. It’s past time for another revolution.

  296. shoeless says:

    ConservativeForProgress Says:
    ——————————————————————————–

This unprecedented level of deficit is something our children and grandchildren, and their children will be paying for generations to come.

You fu(king jackass! Where the hell were you when you Bushgod was racking up a $6 TRILLION debt for your children and grandchildren to pay. I spent 8 years trying to explain this fact to a$$holes like you, but none of you would listen while your dipsh!t monkey was squating in the White house. So STFU and go away.

  297. margarine says:

This is really funny to me. Look at what the stimulus did!

The problem isn’t too much money being put into it, it’s not enough. The first freaking sentence of the article outright says that. And who spent the most time trying to cut into the bill?

If you disagree with the stimulus, then fine. But the result here does not line up with the reasoning at all.

Are people that stupid? I refuse to believe it.

  298. margarine says:

Furthermore, I love how Obama received a huge deficit… and by making it somewhat deeper to try to IMPROVE things, he is also blamed for what was there in the first place.

It’s a no win situation for him here for him for people with this mindset. If we weren’t mired in paying for things that have brought us basically right into a depression, there’d be no deficit of note to freak out about.

Bush took a surplus and ruined it. Obama gets a huge deficit and all that is suddenly important is that the deficit is getting worse. Where were you people for the past 8 years? The war was apparently worth the money, but attempting to create a situation where we can get out of it (which logically requires money!) is horrible.

    Give me a break.

  299. shoeless says:

margarine, the reason these right-wing Republicans hate the stimulus has nothing to do with deficits that “our children and grandchildren, and their children will be paying for generations to come”. Otherwise, they would have said something when George W. Bush was sinking us $6 TRILLION further into debt. Their problem is how the money is being spent. They cheered when Bush borrowed trillions to invade defenseless countries and kill brown people. They loved it when Bush borrowed more trillions to give to the wealthiest 1%. No, they are just mad that some of this money might go to build schools and roads. That is against their principles.

  300. margarine says:

Well, I realize that… I just think it’s funny how even such a simple, common sense connection like this is lost on them. Their presented reasons never make any real sense.

  301. jay says:

  305. jay says:

Hey shoeless, look up “bigot” in the dictionary.

You people need to get rid of the hate.

  306. jay says:

Deep within us all are the seeds of hate for what is different. We do not have to be taught these things. We have to be taught not to give in to them. They are in our blood; but in our minds is the charity and the love to overcome them.

It is not war that leads to murderous excesses, but hate. Hatred is like a plague. It is all-consuming, and it springs from man to man. Our enemies become demons, their wives the mothers of demons, their children infant demons. We tell stories of our enemies eating babies, – our hearts turn dark and, in turn, we visit a terrible retribution upon those we now hate. But hatred never dies. We plant the seeds of it in every action inspired by it. Kill a man and his son will grow to hate you and seek revenge. When he obtains that revenge, his son will learn to hate him.

There are only three ways to deal with an enemy: Destroy him, run away from him, or befriend him. The man who has come to hate you will never befriend you.

Hey, way to lead with the “love,” jay. Hypocrite.

    Dismissed.

  313. AaronQ of Maine says:

The deficit is a set amount of dollars. Not a set amount of Value. By Printing more money we do two things. Devalue our debt and have more money to pay it. Yes, people won’t be able to buy bread but hey. at least we’ll get china off our back. So my message is do not worry about national debt unless you’re a trained economist.

Hate is nothing more that fear based on ignorance. Facts and information are a repressors nightmare.

    Agreed.

  316. AaronQ of Maine says:

the correct response to a truly awful person like Richard C or hitler is not hate. To them, if you’re not afraid, you should feel pity. although fear makes a lot of people hate them. I don’t think that too many people spend enough time deconstructing their own emotions. I do, and sometimes I feel like a robot that just doesn’t really connect with the fickle population of this country.

You are the Queen of name calling Zooey. I only pointed to what the meaning of bigotry is. I know you don’t care, it’s evident in your posts here. If you are a bigot then it’s not name calling.

Very interesting Walt. Of course land is not a productive asset for most people and is not a contributor to the manufacturing base. Still it’s a very interesting post.

I suppose if your land had oil or other resource it could be productive to the economy.

Jay if you got some worthless land you want to gave to me I’ll take it. Seriously, anything, even that mine swill river in TN. My point is that all land has some value and some land is extremely valuable. $97.7 is less than I thought it was going to be. I am wondering if they count all the way out 200 miles offshore. Underwater land, Trump just had a seizure.

  340. WaltTheMan says:

    AaronQ of Maine,
The numbers represent personal assets. Things owned by corporations are not in the mix except where individuals own shares which percolate up. Bill Gates may be on the high end of the asset scale.

My point is that most land in this country does not contribute to the GNP or a manufacturing base or jobs. All land has value but shouldn’t be considered when looking to fund jobs or make the economy grow. It’s mostly a stagnant resource until it’s sold or mined or is taxed when someone dies.

This excludes farm land of course. Most land in this country is owned by the Federal Government and your original post only mentioned “individual assets” not Government assets.

OBTW I don’t know anything about a mine in TN. I guess that was a dig, right?
