RNC set to approve resolution rebranding the Democratic Party as ‘Democrat Socialist Party.’

Roger Simon reports this morning that the Republican National Committee will “approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the ‘Democrat Socialist Party‘” when they meet next week for a “special session.” When asked if the resolution would force embattled RNC chairman Michael Steele to use the label personally, an RNC member replied, “Who cares?” Steele wrote a memo last month in opposition to the resolution that he believed the label would “accomplish little than to give the media and our opponents the opportunity to mischaracterize Republicans.” Read the resolution here.

  5. ralph the wonder locust says:

You know, for the Democratic Party to follow suit, they would have to introduce a resolution rebranding Republicans as the “Dumb Poopyhead Party”.

That seems to me would come as close to the original resolution in both spirit and execution as is possible.

  6. WaltB says:

Well, if the Dems are socialist, certainly the Repugs are led by someone who likes the Nazi salute! Should it be “Republican Nazi Party”?? They certainly act like the are most times.

  7. rightwing-leftwing says:

Question: Why is it so important for them to take this to task?

We have an administration who tortured and a crap economy last I checked. Just shows me how “serious” THEY are.

Excuse me, NO ONE has MISCHARACTERIZED the GnoP! They really are who they appear to be and NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO RECTIFY THEIR SELF-CREATED PROBLEMS. They have done nothing but vote NO on every piece of legislation from Obama while at the same time, holding out their hands for the dollars they voted against. They have OBSTRUCTED the nominees Obama has asked for – nothing can change the FACTS. So don’t tell us there is ‘MISCHARACTERIZATION’ going on here!

  19. CageyCretin says:

When asked if the resolution would force embattled RNC chairman Michael Steele to use the label personally, an RNC member replied, “Who cares?”

The RNC member went on to say that, “This is some great fun. And until we regain total power, we will continue to act like little spoiled children, and try to make everything in the country, except our profits, go completely to hell.”

“F%$k this country,” the RNC member exclaimed loudly, “And until this country accepts us as unconditional rulers, that is precisely what we will continue to do, and we will mock the entire system while we do it, and have some great fun just like in high school and the fraternity again. Whoo hooo!!!!!!!! Free black market oxycontin and viagara all around!!!!!!”

Then the RNC member wandered off chanting a fraternity acronym and drinking from a hip flask, while two large men in brown shirts and tight leather shorts moved to block this newsperson from entering the private RNC meeting, though this reporter believes that scantily clad, underage boys and girls could be glimpsed within, chained to the tables. Surely that must have been a hallucination brought on by the contact trip from the LSD laced punch fountain inside.

Alright! Alright!! I’m a bit off today, damnit! I didn’t read that right. Thanks for the correction, I agree wholeheartedly.

We must create a resolution, and present it to congress, as this is essential business to get this country moving in the right direction for healing and recovery.

This is more important than…. than…. I can’t think of anything more important than this, so lets get this on top priority, pronto!!!!!

  27. chiroptera toasterhead says:

I believe the Democrat Socialist Party might take offense to this unauthorized use of their name.

  28. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Well, on this one Steele is actually right. The resolution will do nothing other than to make the Republicans look even more ridiculous than they already look.

Their membership is now between 18-21% depending on which poll you believe and both polls show that they have lost 4% of their members in the last couple of months alone.

I once called them tone deaf. Now they are stone cold deaf. They really can’t see what they are doing to themselves.

  29. misscoleopteramolly says:

The Republican Party is in a shambles. Their old policies have resulted in two clusterf**k wars, a collapsed economy, erosion of American freedoms in the name of security, and worldwide contempt against us. Their numbers are shrinking as their tent gets too small for anybody but the most rabid wingnuts to enter.

You’d think they’d be spending their time trying to rediscover who they really are and re-examining their ideals. You’d think they’d be working to reinvent themselves as a viable political party.

But no. They want to spend their time issuing playground taunts, despite the fact that hurling invective really no longer works for them. Fine. Let them. If they don’t see themselves circling the drain, there’s really no way anybody can save them.

This sort of childish behavior is just one more piece of evidence of how far removed from reality the Repignofascist Party has become. If these Cheney-holes think that name calling is how they are going to be looked on more positively by the populace then they deserve no more than the 21 percent of Americans who now identify themselves with the Repignofascist Party. John Boner must be really proud this morning.

  32. hormiga brava chavez says:

OMG! This is so stupid. While people are losing their homes, job, etc. these RNC fools are wasting time rebranding the Democratic Party?! Instead of coming up with viable solutions to the problems Americans face – this is all they have?! Until the RNC grows up and get their heads together the GOP should stay in the minority. DAMFs!

  33. snig says:

“The Party of Lincoln” shall now be formerly known as “The Party of Joe McCarthy”.

  34. fletc3her says:

The GOP continues to excel in showing how irrelevant they are to the problems that Americans are facing every day. While we struggle with rising unemployment, spiraling national debt, foreclosures, two wars, the threat of international terrorism, and with the modern civil rights movement, the GOP is taking time out to, and I can hardly type this without smirking, rename the *other* major political party. Now I’m laughing out loud. Oh lord, they is dumb.

I have done the same thing at parties. My favorite is when I announce that I think George Bush is the smartest person to ever occupy the Whitehouse. I am consistently asked to shut the hell up. Is there any wonder why this group of certified idiots wrecked our country? I have never voted for a Republican because I’ve always thought they were the worst we had to offer but I never imagined they could become so derelict in their obligation to have the country’s best interests at heart. These people have gone completely off the rails. I have only seen this happen to a person in one other circumstance. I dare ask…no… I gotta ask, ARE THESE PEOPLE SMOKING CRACK?

  37. Buckie Boy says:

“mischaracterize Republicans” by calling them something like, Compassionate Conservative Party, or maybe Christian Party, or something like that.

Republican Fascist Party is more like it though.

Now that is NOT a mischaracterization of Republicans.

  38. zxbe says:

Why is it so important for them to take this to task?

Answer: They’ve got nothing else to say or do. They’re bankrupt in the ideas department. They’re reduced to petty name-calling.

  39. 5th Estate says:

Maybe we should see ‘em and raise ‘em.

How about calling them the The Grand Old Poopy-pants? !

  40. vigor says:

Next example: “The Democrats acquitted themselves like Socialists.”

  41. CageyCretin says:

While they have lost some poularity, the problem is that they are still embedded in positions of power and leverage over all the branches and offices of this country. They don’t need those voters as much as we perceive, which is why they seem to be flailing around — they intend to use their leverages to keep things their way, and a part of this all is just biding their time and trying to make the Democrats look bad. Some of it is political (like Specter…. ummm… yeah, … Democratic…. yeah, right….), but most of it is the corporate power (and lobbying is a great part of that angle).

They are not “irrelevant” yet, not by a long shot.

  51. misscoleopteramolly says:

I always thought each political party got to pick their own name. Same goes for sports teams, corporations, and anything else.

But if the Republican Party gets to choose a new name for what is now known as the Democratic Party, shouldn’t the Democrats get to pick a new name for the GOP? I’m sure we could come up with some great ones.

  52. Bluestocking says:

Good grief…how infantile can you get? Clearly, the collective members of the RNC have either forgotten or have never learned that when adults resort to juvenile schoolyard name-calling, it says far more about the person or people doing it than the ones whom it targets.

  58. misscoleopteramolly says:

  59. Zimzone says:

    Republics = Party of Pain

Remember the kid on the playground who couldn’t get along with anyone so resorted to name calling? That’s today’s Republic. Remember what you said to that person? (Sticks & stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.)

It’s time to tell Republics to go home to their Momma. Adults have important business to do, and whining, snotty nosed kids just compound the problem.

How about this for a new Republic Party name?…STFU Party.

  60. pastcaring says:

How about renaming the Republican Party “Criminal Inc.”?

  61. InOnTheFly says:

  62. 5th Estate says:

Well there are some differences between the Nazi Party and the GOP

    For instance:

The Nazis spent billions on physical infrastructure.
They developed a cheap reliable economical car that everyone could afford.
They developed alternative fuels when the war they started wasn’t going so well.

Okay, that’s all I can come up with.

how about a picture of Rush as their leader with an explanation that he is a heroin addict (it is true) and that you should never listen to a heroin addict.

  67. amish_edison says:

Ah that old tried-and-true GOP tactic. They really have had nothing new to offer America in decades and instead choose to stick to their dusty political playbook:

    1) Accuse your opponent of the very actions that you are guilty of. (A Karl Rove specialty)
    2) Name-calling. (Effetive and mature! Bonus points if the name-calling includes coded GOP buzzwords to stir up the base)
    3) Race-baiting.
    4) Fear mongering.

*GOP Bonus Points also awarded if comments include more than one of the tactics mentioned above at a time.

  68. Megaloptera McWars says:

My oh my. They’re back to indulging on their penchant for creating fear, because they’ve been told by their ordained masters in Dick and Rush that they’re not allowed to branch out. Since they’re in the state of mind to believe all their past policies were unnoticed smashing successes, I can’t be surprised that they think this is going to redraw people flocking either to the independent side or to the largest political party in the U.S., the democratic party.

I’m still surprised a major political party would take this step, however. Maybe we need to start calling the GOP for what they really are these days: artificially a “major” party that belongs at the bottom of the ticket in the next election.

I’m sure there are problems when taken to extremes, but the same is true for capitalism…so what’s the argument here? Is there an argument? I suspect there isn’t. I believe most but that creepy 20% or so are jumping ship to Independent status. I don’t really think there’s a huge ideological shift, because as we all have seen on TP, the majority of Independents are right wing crazies who just don’t want to be directly identified with a losing political party.

There’s a self-deception that their “real values” of the free market, cynical imperialism, and outright bigotry weren’t fully represented in the last administration’s string of failed policies. Showing cowardice, they are now Independents who are now above the petty partisan fray. Stick around, because you’ll see them for the same conservative GOP trolls that’ve always been around.

  82. eyesopen says:

Of course the Republican National Committee is going to impose themselves and their directives on the Democratic Party. They have an uncontrollable urge to run things, and something like this is the only opportunity they get for input to a viable political party.

  83. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

The GOP spent decades demonizing the word “liberal” as though it were something to be ashamed of. Well that sure backfired on them as what is it today 19% of the general public are willing to label themselves as a Republican? The label “progressive” was not demonized due to it’s inherent positive conotation (plus throwing “regressive” back at them makes them angry). Using “Democrat” in lieu of the proper “Democratic” is just a jab that peeves politcos and wonks and is all but ignored by the general public. So what have they left but to try to make the whole “Socialist” meme stick? I personally don’t give a shit what they call my Party as long as we have a strong majority in the House and an intelligent representative in the White House and the approval of the American people. As long as the Party of Hate’s numbers continue to diminish they can call me anything but a GOOPer and I’ll be happy to sit back and laugh at their childish antics.

I work in advertising and can think of a dozen ways to hit them. Hard. Hit them so hard they will never get up again.

    ___________________________________________________________

You’re right — it’s purely a scary word tactic. They’re counting on few people knowing what the word really means, resulting in visions of Communism, totalitarianism (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), or fascism (National Socialist German Workers’ Party, or Nazi Party). They want the term to be associated with Hitler, Stalin, tyranny, breadlines, oppression, etc.

The easy way to combat that is to challenge the parroting teabaggers to define the term and explain why it’s bad. Which they won’t be able to do, and they’ll be stuck just restating the talking point like a broken record.

Until media and other major monopolies are busted up into something resembling a functioning market, we continue to be one hair’s breadth from completely screwed.

Never, never forget that the Nazis were “all but washed up” in the late 20s.

  96. dasm says:

The most polite thing I can think of to rebrand the RNC is “Real Nut Cases”.

  97. geejunie says:

From now on, I’m calling the Republicans the Ridiculous Nincompoop Cretins [RNC]. So many toupees, so little common sense. Amazing…

  98. Dreary Urbanite says:

Logically since nearly 50% of all Americans are below average, 21% of them must be WAY below average. If fact they may be so below average that they bring a knife to a gunfight as far as name calling contests go. I’ll gladly accept their label but they have to accept mine. I nominate The Lunafeckingticfringeshiteweaslechickenshitepantspisser Party.

  99. Fool Zero says:

    Darn you, CageyCretin (4):

I’ll accept that, assuming that the Republicans accept their new moniker as the “Republican Fascist Party.”

That was my idea! Just because you happened to think of it first… :-(

  100. neoconsrscum says:

    Cue the circus music-
    here come de CLOWNS!!!!!

Go on, you idiots- keep playing to the lowest common denominator; you’ll ASSURE you have a PERMANENT Republi-SCUM MINORITY.

  101. Bozo The Neocootiebug says:

lemmie get this straight: now that it’s become evident to these clowns rebranding their party is going nowhere fast, they’re going to rebrand the democratic party? BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHABWWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHH

  102. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Great… then we will relabel them the Gopersaurus party.

  103. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Hate to admit, but Steele is correct in his assessment. It only makes the Gopersaurs look foolish.

  104. Libellula saturata Annie says:

    Big Tent = Ziploc baggie.

Good job, Pukies. Keep it comin’!!

  105. Libellula saturata Annie says:

    TEABAGS FOR EVERYONE!!!!!!!

    WOOHOO!!!

  106. EugeneDebs says:

    Vigor

ONly if you are too stupid to know what the word socialism means. You are the perfect GOP demographic that is really REALLY stupid. You will repeat anything you are told to think, since you are too stupid to think for yourself, no matter how abjectly stupid it is. When the Democratic Party wants to socialize the financial industry, the agriculture industry and the oil industry get back to us. Until then realize you are too stupid to contribute and STFU

  107. Rodeskawler says:

If we are going to be accurate instead of misleading, I think two party name changes need to take place.

First the party of Jefferson, previously known as the Democratic Republican Party, should revive the Republican and drop the Democratic. Today’s “Democratic” party has actually acted like Republicans since Clinton ruined them in the 90’s.

The Republican party, on the other hand, should rename their party to the Transnational Fascist party.

  108. oldgranny says:

    # 101,
    Keep pointing that out please!
The GOP was considered washed up in 1964. They even had telethons on TV to raise money for the GOP.
And look what they came back and did to this country!

  109. Salmon Dave says:

It’s so stupid that I almost can’t come up with a parallel. ALMOST but, we could use the Republican ” Nazi” Party…
or the Republican “Facist” Party……could use the Republican “white supremacist” Party……how about the Republican “hater” Party…..well I could go on….BUT…..

  110. Bad Eye says:

Oh yeah? Well…sticks and stones may break my bones…

  111. grover nerdkissed says:

When asked if the resolution would force embattled RNC chairman Michael Steele to use the label personally, an RNC member replied, “Who cares?”

    HAHAHHAAAA!!!!!
    at least there’s some honesty!!!!

  112. squidbilly says:

How could a reputable political organization stoop so low and be so stupid.

Their old and tired belief in the electorate easily being duped by such nonsense or the belief that the electorate is stupid was seriously proven wrong by their candidate’s poor campaigning last November.

Guess they just don’t get it.

  113. flight says:

Roger Simon reports this morning that the Republican National Committee will “approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the ‘Democrat Socialist Party‘” when they meet next week for a “special session.”

    }}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

What clever people these Republicans are. I wonder what it was like to rearrange the deck chairs while the Titanic was sinking.

  114. labman57 says:

The GOP has nothing substantial to offer the American public regarding economic or foreign policy, so instead they resort to the same juvenile name-calling (”celebrity”, “elitist”, “terrorist sympathizer”) that failed them during the 2008 election campaign. All they can do is point their finger at Obama, sneer, and smugly proclaim “Don’t trust him. He is not one of us. He is un-American. He is a socialist….or a communist…..or a fascist…..or a Muslim…or the son of Satan.”

And now their new brainstorm is to call everyone in the Democratic Party a socialist.

And their right-wing base jumps up and down and gets their blood boiling.

Meanwhile, the other 85% of the American public shake their heads, give a heavy sigh, and go about their business trying to help Obama make the world a healthier, safer, more economically vibrant place to live.

  115. JamesCraven says:

I see the GOP bus lost tgheir wheels a long time ago even before this came up!

  116. MapleStreet says:

But, but but Obama is a fascist Muslim .

Seriously though, the dems get to choose their name. NOT the repubs

  117. RealityCheck says:

I have read a lot of post here…that indicate that the posters would be fine with a socialist government. So I would fail to see why it would upset everyone?

  118. Morgan423 says:

an RNC member replied, “Who cares?”

    My sentiments exactly.

  119. Keith says:

    Reality Check,
Do you think we should privatize:
    all schools and universities
    fire depts.
    police
    FBI
    CIA
    NASA
Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines
    Coast Guard, National Guard, Reserves
    libraries
    highways, bridges, dams
Yosemite, Yellowstone, and every other park big and small
    Social Security and Medicare
    job training
end all welfare, food stamps, etc.
    Food and Drug Administration
Institute of Health, Center for Disease Control, etc., etc.???

Because really, they come under socialism, not capitalism.

  120. Mugsy says:

As soon as they do, I move we rebrand the Republican Party:

    GOK: Grand old Klan.

  121. rightwing-leftwing says:

Long live the Democrat Socialist Party!

We can just diffuse their stupid attack by accepting the new name in jest.

  122. SHRED says:

Damn…if only there was such a party.

  123. Chris P says:

From the Oxford dictionary of Current English
Socialism – adj. A political and economic theory which holds that a country’s land, transport, natural resources, and chief industries should be owned or controlled by the community as a whole.

Do they really want to open this can of worms?

  124. rightwing-leftwing says:

Socialists mainly share the belief that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital, creates an unequal society, and does not provide equal opportunities for everyone in society. Therefore socialists advocate the creation of a society in which wealth and power are distributed more evenly based on the amount of work expended in production. (wiki.com)

    Key items here are:

    - Capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital.

    - [Capitalism] creates an unequal society.

    - [Capitalism] does not provide equal opportunities for everyone in society.

    – [Socialists want] wealth and power [to be] distributed more evenly based on the amount of work expended in production.

Can one see WHY a corporate PIG would hate socialism? Are these CEOs really worth millions? Capitalism unchecked is like financial genocide to the poor and middle class in the USA. There has to be a healthy balance between capitalism, government and the populace for all to thrive and grow. Every time capitalism over-reaches, the populace gets mad and pushes more to socialism for protection. If anyone is to blame for socialism, in my opinion, it is those with the power and money with too much greed.

  125. brickhugger says:

First the republicans (well ok, Rush: but they didn’t repudiate him) say they want Obama to fail

then they say gay marriage should be banned because ‘it will cost small businesses money for spousal benefits’

then they say that abortion should be banned because ‘it is taking potential employees out of the labor force’ (I kid you not; they really said this. Look in yesterday’s Belleville News Democrat)

Now, they are trying to ‘rebrand’ the Democrats as socialists.

So, never mind our two wars, terrorism, global warming, financial instability, millions of uninsured americans: the most critical thing we need to be doing is calling liberals names?

    Did I miss something?
