Last night, the Wonk Room’s Igor Volsky appeared on Fox Business Network to discuss health care reform. He disputed the host’s assertion that the Democrats’ goal was to create a single-payer system, and explained why a public option plan was so essential:
What we’ve had so far in this country is a patchwork system of insurance where millions of American falls through the cracks. And what we want to do is create a public option where the most vulnerable Americans, Americans who now forgo coverage, have access to affordable health care. It’s not about socialism; it’s about providing Americans with a choice. It’s what we should all be for — it’s the American solution.
Watch it:
Igor was pitted against Dennis Smith, a Senior Fellow at the Heritage Foundation. When it came to real reform, the Fox Business host admitted that “it’s essentially really two against one here.”
public option?
May 14th, 2009 at 7:57 pmno way are we gonna let private enterprise come in second; people be damned.

That’s how they roll on FAUX. Bullies.

They are an illegal 527 group. Is the DoJ listening?
They are the poster child for bringing back the Fairness Doctrine, although it can’t be enforced on cable. It can be enforced on all of their FCC public licenses.
May 14th, 2009 at 8:32 pmIf FAUX wasn’t so fair and balance it would actually be 46,000,001 to 2, if you include the uninsured.

May 14th, 2009 at 8:46 pmThe Bush administration gave 531.5 billion of tax payer money to health management industries and pharmaceutical companies. This is the kind of psychotic socialism that Fox News and the Heritage Foundation prefer.
Americans are overcharged 30 to 60 percent on medications and procedures. That said, the Heritage Foundation often lectures on the merits of free market capitalism. They are an arm of corrupt cronyism and Fox News monkeys their talking points.
May 14th, 2009 at 8:55 pmIt’s like the GOP, insurance and pharmaceutical companies want to keep us sick, uneducated and poor.
May 14th, 2009 at 9:06 pmHere’s what’s going to happen if we have private, for-profit insurance competing with a public plan:
The for-profits will continue to use underwriting to determine coverage, and rates.
Anyone with a history of illness, from cancer and depression to hang nails and warts will see their coverage application rejected or will be subject to higher premium rates.
The public plan will become the for-profit’s dumping ground for all those who might actually need medical care, therefore the public plan will experience the highest costs.
The for-profits, and their GNOP and Blue Dog enablers, will then use the data to claim that the public plan is far more costly than the private, free market system.
Single Payer is the only viable option to ensure healthcare coverage for all.
PEACE
May 14th, 2009 at 10:30 pmSince one of the primary objectives of reforming health care is to bring down costs, it makes no sense to cave in to any demands of the people who want costs to be as high as possible, in order to maintain their ridiculously high profit margins.
One thing they can do right now is change the law to allow the government to negotiate with the pharmaceutical companies on prescription drug costs, like they used to do. You don’t even need to reform the entire system to do that. It can be done in the same amount of time it took Congress to overturn the Supreme Court and allow the FCC to run the No Call Registry – one day!
May 14th, 2009 at 10:30 pmspencers mom,
I like that thinking. Good post.
May 14th, 2009 at 10:32 pmThis is simply “government bad” nonsense failed talking points by the conservatives.
May 14th, 2009 at 10:38 pmI am not understanding why single payer is off the table… except for the fact too many in congress, especially Baucus who gets to pick and choose who is at the table for health care reform, are bought and paid for by big pharma and insurance industry.
Does anyone here really trust the insurance industry to do what is right?
You would think those running the country are the banks and insurance industry also invested in media and defense.
May 14th, 2009 at 10:45 pmWayne, I remember when Medicare first started “partnering” with the for-profits. One of the plans I was consulting for at the time came up with the brilliant marketing strategy of having free lunch meetings for prospective members. But only on the second floor of buildings with no elevators.
Their reasoning was that they would cull the herd down to those who were at least well enough to walk up a flight of stairs. Nice, right?
If the for-profits are able to rake in the premium dollars for the 20- and 30-somethings who don’t have coverage because they never need to see a doctor, it will be a financial windfall. Especially if they are able to off-load the pre-Medicare population, many of whom have gone years without routine medical care, onto a public health system.
Congress had better take all of this into consideration before they agree to let the “free market” continue to cherry pick members.
PEACE
May 14th, 2009 at 10:49 pmWe should take the same approach to these insurance and health companies as we do a terrorist.
We don’t negotiate with them!
Isn’t the way capitalist scum put profit over people the same as a terrorists?
May 14th, 2009 at 10:50 pmSingle Payer SHOULD be the goal.
The very argument against the public option is the best argument FOR Single Payer. They consistently say that it would be an “unfair competitor” to private insurance plans. Yes! It would! It would be an astronomically better deal – better care for less cost. Private insurance CAN’T compete with a public option and it shouldn’t. We should all be on a public insurance system – ONE enormous risk pool spreading that risk so far and so wide that we would all get full care coverage for less.

You idiots! There are NOT enough doctors! Who wants to graduate from med school 150,000$ in debt and be a doctor?
Are you nerts?
They HAVE to specialize just to pay the bills and NO ONE takes medicare anymore. No one!
What is nuts is the fact we put up with this for profit health care system and as a result 18,000 to 40,000 die each year due to no access to health care. Not the elderly or disabled as they have medicare.
What else is nuts is for profit health insurance is at the table for health care reform.
Nurse practitioners do just as well as the Docs in most cases and can help pick up the load.

May 15th, 2009 at 3:46 amUnfortunately, the GOP’s scare tactics have worked. Talk about any public health care option, and you get, “they’ll take away my choice of doctor.” My company changed insurance “providers” and I received a letter informing me that I have to switch primary care physicians; what choice do I have? I can’t afford a non-employer policy, and the insurance company knows it.
It’s always about the scare tactics, afraid of terrorists, afraid of minorities, afraid of government (wait, isn’t that the people?). Shouldn’t I also be afraid of huge corporations?
May 15th, 2009 at 7:56 amI’m becoming very pessimistic about the changes “I” believe in. I just don’t think it will be possible with all the Congressional obstruction. Congress sucks. Of the corporations, for the corporations, by the corporations. We are sooooooo fcuked.
May 15th, 2009 at 10:15 amThe slow path to the single payer system.
Yeah right, like the government will play fair in the market place by providing competition to lower costs. Good luck with that.
They will simply use Chicago style thug politics to put everyone else out of business and then run the system into the ground like Canada and Europe.
Has anyone ever asked the question “Why do people come to the US to get health care?” http://www.city-journal.org/html/17_3_canadian_healthcare.html
