Rep. Shadegg Dismisses Rush Limbaugh As Just ‘A Television Personality’

This morning, Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) received enthusiastic praise during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. (Host Joe Scarborough called him “the wind beneath my wings.”) Scarborough and Shadegg began by agreeing that party leaders like Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh were wrong to say that Colin Powell is no longer welcome in the Republican party. When Scarborough asked whether the party was “big enough” for both Cheney and Powell, Shadegg replied, “Absolutely, no question about it.”

Minutes later, however, Shadegg embraced Limbaugh’s position on global warming — even while trying to distance himself from Limbaugh, whom he called just a “television personality”:

O’DONNELL: Do you agree with Rush on global warming?

SHADEGG: I don’t even know what Rush Limbaugh —

O’DONNELL: He believes it’s a fraud and is not happening.

SHADEGG: I believe the far left is making it a fraud by claiming that it has been proven to have been caused solely by man-made greenhouse gases, when that evidence isn’t in. And by rushing to solutions that aren’t yet justified. Now you can decide whether that’s Rush Limbaugh’s position, I don’t actually think it is–

O’DONNELL: Pretty much that’s Rush Limbaugh’s position. Congratulations. You got it right.

SHADEGG: But Rush Limbaugh is a television personality. I don’t think he’s chairman of the Republican Party, last I looked.

Watch it:

Despite his attempt to distance himself from Limbaugh, Shadegg’s head-in-the-sand position on climate change is in effect identical to that of the “television personality.” Just recently, Shadegg claimed that “there is some debate on whether global warming is in fact being caused by man-made greenhouse gases.” In fact, the debate has been long over: Man’s action is contributing to the boiling of the planet, and if the U.S. does not act soon, it will be too late to avert disastrous effects.

Of course, Shadegg’s global warming denial received no criticism from the Morning Joe crew. O’Donnell praised his climate change stance: “The way he plays against the global warming issue and Henry Waxman and all that sounds very reasonable.” Mika Brzezinski agreed: “Absolutely!” However, O’Donnell quickly added that Shadegg “does want to kill [energy legislation] completely.”

How long before Shadegg — like so many before him — is forced to apologize to the easily-affronted RADIO host for dismissing his influence?

Transcript:

LAWRENCE O’DONNELL: Do you agree with party leader Rush Limbaugh that global warm is a fraud?

SHADEGG: Party leader Rush Limbaugh? I don’t recall electing Rush LImbaugh party leader. I think we just had that discussion. [...]

JOE: He is good. And you know, he’s not crazy.

O’DONNELL: Does not sound crazy.

JOE: Believes in a big tent.

O’DONNELL: And even, by the way, the way he plays against the global warming issue and Henry Waxman [sic] and all that sounds very reasonable.

MIKA: Absolutely.

O’DONNELL: It’s a reasonable-sounding voice.

Seems this guy Shadegg covered all his bases. Shadegg will soon be shagged by Limbaugh in the woodshed.

Oh please! This guy will be groveling on no time. Remember when Pence was on ‘Hardball’ and he couldn’t even admit he beleived in evolution because it would upset his base? What a bunch of wimps.

Drugs Limpballs is Supreme Commander of the Party of Pain and keeper of the Holy Cow.

    Don’t cross him.

    Don’t disagree with him.

Don’t pretend to speak for him.

You will be spit roasted in hot verbs and soaked with torture tactics if you cross this behemoth’s path. Yes, you used to be the Republican Party. But you chose to sail on a ship of fools. The waters are now dark & threatening. If you can’t see the shores of Russia from the ship you’re sailing, you are obsolete.

There’s a new Sheriff in town. Get over it.
    Resistance is futile.

When has anyone on the left ever said, that global warming has only been caused by man? This is just another BS line from the right to ignore the biggest issue that faces human kind.

  12. CageyCretin says:

Don’t know. I’ll take the apology bets. I think this one might get to slide without apology or any great verbal assault. What odds am I getting here?

  13. katy says:

heads up (speaking of wingnuttia) – earlier, stephanie miller was interviewing a california congresswoman, one of the topics was health care…

she related a story about her own 93 yr old mother who was asked if she wanted a certain surgical procedure, and who said yes, but i think the surgery did not help… the congresswoman was describing unnecessary medical procedures…

anyway, some callers were bawling about how dems want to take away that choice from people and blah blah blah…

i’m betting (and i don’t bet) that there will be a firestorm about that conversation shortly…

  14. delafield says:

Republicans, like John Shadegg (R-AZ) and Sarah Palin (R-Idiot), still believe that witches exist. Somebody should throw a net over these right wing morons.

    ___________

Really? That’s interesting, because the only people I see making this claim are science deniers like yourself. No climate scientists or environmentalists are claiming that climate change has been caused solely by manmade greenhouse gases.

This is a major reason that Medicare is costing so much. It is a little known fact that 70% of Medicare dollars are paid for the last 30 days of life.

People need to come to grips that people die, that surgery and medicines cannot fix everything, and that the elderly are at greater risks for post-surgical complications.

End of life issues should focus on comfort and caring, not trying to perform a risky (and yes, costly) surgery on some in their 80s and 90s.

I don’t mean to sound callous and uncaring, but there are tens of millions going entirely without medical care, and that money could be better spent.

    Sorry for going off topic…

    PEACE

There are literally thousands of individuals who dispute the apocalyptic “2+2=4″ explanation of the sum of 2 and 2. And yet, supposedly open-minded “mathematicians” want to declare the debate over the sum of 2+2 over.

  20. katy says:

exactly, mom, and that was her point…

Oh, excellent. CFP has provided us with a resource for research in which some of the materials were actually written by real scientists.

I find it instructive that those who challenge the science of climate change are generally those who also challenge the science of evolution, and any other scientific finding that contradicts the cherished beliefs of the right-wing.

BUt LOOK! They’ve got SEVEN HUNDRED scientists to sign a petition!

You never hear a specific number of how many scientists support the conclusions of, say the IPCC or the National Academy of Sciences or countless other scientific societies that have affirmed the research. You know why? Because there’s too many to count.

    *************************************************

My guess is…not long. You watch…he’ll be backtracking, apologizing, kowtowing, and kissing Limbaugh’s backside before a week has passed just like nearly all the other Republicans (with the exception of Powell) who’ve dared to diss Limbaugh publicly over the past few months.

However, THIS could explain some of the instabilities noted in republic fascist party psyches: they are working off of an entirely unique base system for their decisions.

Just because you have a list of names and claim they are all valued and respected scientists does not mean that they are valued, respected, or even scientists at all. And, of course, are they scientists in the field or one close enough to be relevant to the opinion they express?

And while 700 sounds like a lot, wht is the sample that they caome from? How many people fit the “scientist” classification as well as the least of those 700? What is that sample indicative of?

  28. ralph the wonder locust says:

I have proof that George Soros is behind the phony “2+2 debate is over” claims. Al Gore signed on because he still holds a grudge against mathematics in general from the 2000 election.

  33. ralph the wonder locust says:

Cagey, I just did a Google search and it appears that there are 4200 “degree-granting institutions” in the US alone.

700 might seem like a big number, but it represents only one signer for every six institutions in the US. That’s excluding the rest of the world’s universities. How many relevant scientists are lecturers at Cambridge University, for example?

  34. deebaser says:

Looking at the list of the 700 “scientists”, I gotta ask, what exactly do you need to do to get a Phd in Geography?

  35. ralph the wonder locust says:

Of course, CFP’s link relies heavily on james Inhofe’s blog for its substantiation, and as a really weak attempt at hyping its claims, reveals breathlessly that,

According to a new report, the 700-plus scientists are “now more than 13 times the number of U.N. scientists who authored the media-hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.”

Seriously. They think that the number of scientists who authored a report is a good comparison group.

Man, if you’ve got to go that far to make yourself good, you’re not grasping at straws anymore. You’re grasping at blades of grass on a putting green.

Let’s not piss on a legitimate area of study that some find fascinating. Suffice to say that you need more to get a PhD in Geography than you need to be a host of a show on Fox. (Note: I am not a Geography Major – or Minor.)

I love how the reich-wingers slam Obama for “sort of” bowing to the Saudi king but they don’t see a Rush apology as a worse than that. Wow! They are quite the projectionist party aren’t they?

Seriously, I did learn that somewhere and from some source I found reputable at the time, but for the life of me I cannot recall anything else.

  46. winddancer says:

Does Shadegg even know who Limbaugh is..or has he ever listened to him? Considering that he’s calling him a “television personality”…. That list of 700 scientists as cited above include a number of so-called scientists who, even if they have some kind of science degree, the degrees have nothing to do with the study of climatology. For instance, guys with PhD.s in Geography and weathermen do not count. Neither does Michael Crichton Criecton, though Inhoff frequently quoted him as well.

  47. Rodeskawler says:
