57 percent of GOP insiders think Cheney has ‘hurt the Republican Party since leaving office.’

Since leaving office, former Vice President Dick Cheney has been perhaps the most prominent conservative critic of the Obama administration. But his refusal to leave the public stage has many Republicans wincing. In the latest National Journal poll of GOP insiders, 57 percent said that Cheney has “hurt” the party since leaving office:

Cheney Hurt GOP Poll

Speaking to National Journal anonymously, many of the insiders harshly denounced how he has acted since leaving office. “Cheney represents the grumpy intolerance that has come to characterize the GOP. Get off the stage!” said one. “There is nothing Dick Cheney can say or do to help the Republican Party today,” said another. “The best thing he can do is disappear for the next 10 years.”

Wow. Even among GOP insiders, the “21%ers” only total 33%. So why do they still listen to them?

    Why stop at 10?

    Go for 20, or even 30, Dick…

    Above all else… just GO………

Yeah, Dickie shot the GOOP in the face.

Hehehe! Next thing you know, the GOOP will apologize.

Help with investigation, indictment, and conviction and that can be arranged – maybe longer if his heart holds up.

I wonder what the results would be if, instead of polling GOP insiders, if they polled rank-and-file voters who self-identify as Republican. I was able to find Cheney approval ratings on pollingreport.com (and they were dismal), but nothing with results from Republicans only.

Still, it’s encouraging to see the insiders saying that Cheney isn’t doing them any favors. Now, if they could just find the courage to say the same about Limbaugh. This would be the first step to rehabilitating their party.

  8. RantingTommy says:

courage, molly? really? from a right winger?

    never. gonna. happen.

  9. Shellly says:

If the country is not safer under Obama, why is Cheney out and about now more than when he himself ran the country?

Shh molly! Don’t give them any ideas!

Personally, I’m enjoying watching them make wrong turn after wrong turn, getting more and more lost in the political labyrinth.

Not to be mistaken for the incompetent treason that has come to characterize the GOP.

The Dickster can keep going on like this all he wants. I’m not sure what he’s expecting, perhaps if all the material is released maybe he thinks Obama will pardon him. I’d let the bastard twist in the wind. Hey GOP, does the name Whig party mean anything to you?

  16. Bluestocking says:

Someone should report these statistics to Rush Limbaugh, who recently stated that he’d rather have Dick Cheney in his party than Colin Powell *and* who even more recently lashed out at McCain’s 97-year-old momma (talk about a fragile ego!) for stating that he doesn’t represent the Republican Party that she belongs to. Apparently, the gist of Limbaugh’s retort was that the Republican Party to which McCain belongs is the one which keeps getting “shellacked” election after election.

Geez, after eigth looooong years of steadfastly supporting the Bush-Cheney War Crimines regime, why now the sudden change of heart, GOP?

Are you no longer proud of the most criminally accomplished corporate bureaucrats the U.S. government has ever seen? Are you no longer proud of kidnapping, torture, and murder?

  18. amish_edison says:

(sorry for the terrible spelling error on “War Crimes regime”)

Are they speaking anonymously because they are still afraid of shooter or because they’re embarrassed to be “GOP insiders”?

    Cheney is a criminal

The torture he ordered was intended to produce false confessions to justify invading Iraq

  22. Zimzone says:

This latest news nugget about waterboarding a person repeatedly to incur some kine of link between AQ & Saddam could be the last strawman for Cheney.

I would submit that’s exactly why he’s been so vocal.

Fear is a mindkiller, & Cheney is a disease to democracy.

  24. Trittydi says:

Whether or not Cheney has hurt the party – and it seems likely — how pathetic is it that these people are looking for someone else to blame for their on-going problems. They should all look just a little closer to home – like their mirrors.

  26. wevotedforyou.com says:

I am glad that Cheney (and his daughter) are doing the media tour. Despite the fact that he is trying to sculpt a jury pool, his presence does keep the torure debate front and center of the media and blogs.

We need to keep our elected officials to their word and remind them wevotedforyou

  27. jburr says:

If the former VP is so out of touch and irrelevant, why did President Obama immediately turn 180 degrees on several of his policies only after Cheney started scolding him and making him look incompetent? Looks like someone was just taken to Presidential politics 101. There is nothing like watching someone learn on the job. Your intellectual giant was just schooled like a first grader. Please encourage your cohorts in the media to keep having him on, it is fun to watch him run circles around your elite. It is my deepest hopes that the anointed one would actually have the courage to debate him, but we all know that will never happen, they don’t allow graphic bloodshed on TV.

You almost have to feel sorry for the Cheney defenders — could this one possibly sound more pathetic? Kind of reminds me of The Black Knight — decisively defeated, but still scrapping for a fight, even while literally without a leg to stand on.

His vision of Cheney having any effect whatsoever on President Obama’s agenda is pure delusion — along with his assertion that Cheney is schooling him “like a first grader” and “running circles around [our] elite”.

And the fact that Obama isn’t seeking to debate Darth has nothing to do with courage and everything to do with Cheney being an irrelevant has-been. Cheney is a guy whose policies were soundly smacked down last November by the American people, and whom 57% of the political insiders of his own party wish would just go away. The President has far more important things to do with his time.

It’s almost painful to watch trolls in this state. Sort of like watching a mortally wounded badger still trying to snarl and bite feebly while fading away.

  29. curious says:

Well GOP, he is one of your own. You spent all these years raising him to his current position. You overlooked his less then stellar behavior. And as long as you held the majority, you did not care what he did to the country.

Now the criminal enterprise that the Republicans supported has decimated everything. And you would like him to shut up. The GOP thinks that if he shuts up, that we will all forget what terrible things he and Bush did to the Constitution and all of us. Each day this lunatic, this truly evil man speaks, it is a reminder of what we are suffering now. What we will suffer for years to come.

Well the Republicans created this monster and now like Frankenstein he continues to walk around and destroy the GOP. Good!! I hope he continues to talk and talk. To whisper his words of destruction and hopelessness. He speaks from a dark hole. The Republicans made the hole I hope it buries them all.

  30. flavorino says:

All these side stories such as this, Liz Cheney, Nancy Pelosi etc. distract from the main story.
Did Cheney engage in activities that violated the law?
    Yes or no?
    If it appears so, investigate.
If investigation warrants, try in a court of law, not in the media.
    If guilty, convict and punish.
    End of story.
