Dobson surrenders: The hate crimes bill is ‘utter evil,’ but there’s nothing I can do about it.

Focus on the Family’s James Dobson yesterday used his daily broadcast to complain about the hate crimes legislation that recently passed the House. Dobson called it “utter evil” and said it will “undermine the rule of law and seriously damage morality and decency in the culture.” Dobson frequently rails against various cultural issues. But as Dan Gilgoff at U.S. News notes, what was different in this broadcast was Dobson’s utter hopelessness:

society_1024_0 I want to tell you up front that we’re not going to ask you to do anything, to make a phone call or to write a letter or anything.

There is nothing you can do at this time about what is taking place because there is simply no limit to what the left can do at this time. Anything they want, they get and so we can’t stop them.

We tried with [Health and Human Services Secretary] Kathleen Sebelius and sent thousands of phone calls and emails to the Senate and they didn’t pay any attention to it because they don’t have to. And so what you can do is pray, pray for this great nation… As I see it, there is no other answer. There’s no other answer, short term.

Dobson recently made headlines when he conceded that the far right had lost most of the recent so-called “culture war” battles. “Humanly speaking, we can say that we have lost,” said Dobson, adding that he would keep on fighting.

  2. mk3872 says:

So Dodbson is essentially saying that he and his merry followers should have the right to verbally & physically abuse gays and protecting gays is “utter evil”.

Real nice. And not really very Christian.

  3. tom says:

Surrendering, Little Jimmy? Well, that’s a good start.

Now, may I suggest that you sit down and STFU?

  4. Uncle Ho says:

Actually, there IS something Dobson can do about it, he can STFU!

  5. krystalview says:

Humanly speaking, we can say that we have lost,” said Dobson.

    _____________

And with that, the former Christian power broker proceeded to run around the room, waving his hanky in the air and hysterically shrieking, “Teh gays!!! Teh Gays!!! they’re HERE!!! Run! Run!!”

  10. spencers mom says:

My God, it must be horrible for Dobson and his followers to see our great nation devolve into a liberal haven where hate crimes are illegal and the right to privacy is upheld! Hell on earth, I tell you, hell on earth!

I guess all Dobson has left is praying for the Rapture to beam him up.

    PEACE

  11. Zooey says:

Now he can go home and shower with his sons — to inoculate them against teh gay.

    Ewww.

  12. Bob says:

…there is simply no limit to what the left can do at this time. Anything they want, they get and so we can’t stop them.

Really? Ok, let’s proceed with prosecutions of war crimes and universal health care, for starters.

Can’t the ‘right’ say anything without such extreme exaggeration?

  13. hormiga brava chavez says:

Dobson and people like him are so evil and dangerous. I hope that they stay powerless and in the minority. Let them sit in the corner and sulk as the world moves on from religious nonsense.

    ____________________________________________________________

Ah — if only that was the case. Then gays could get married and serve in the military. Universal health care would be reality. EFCA would pass. We’d be out of Iraq. Fat cat greedheads would be ponying up more in taxes and we’d be on our way to economic recovery. Veterans would be treated decently, and their war injuries would be taken care of. We’d be taking global warming seriously. And we’d be making real progress on developing alternative energy sources to be ready for that day when we use the last drop of oil.

No, we don’t get everything we want. But it’s a relief to know that the wingnuts don’t either — anymore.

just more evidence that religious belief is a mental illness and people suffering from it should be provided professional help

  16. Gabe says:

James, if you had been a little more Christ-like, and a lot less “Christian”, you would not find yourself in this position.

Ranting about abortion and homosexuals while ignoring the thousands of innocent children killed in illegal wars by your “Christian” government, and having nothing to say about the criminal mismanagement of the economy and the tax system that condemned hundreds of thousands of AMERICAN children to poverty and a lack of affordable health care did not exactly make you a believable spokesman for Jesus.

  19. ralph the wonder locust says:

One might think that a supposed minister of God’s Word would have a more expansive view of “utter evil” than a bill legislating against hate crimes.

    One would be wrong.

Although, to clarify, I think what one would be wrong about in this case is the gentleman in question being a true minister of God’s Word.

Or, to put it shorter, STFU you cromagnon boneheaded hate-filled perverted greedy slime bag. (too harsh?)

  26. Wiz says:

So if Dobson and his fellow religionists were correct wouldn’t there be divine intervention to make sure they were in power and their policies were adopted? The world is as God wants it to be, and just can’t see Dobson saying that is not true. And if it is true it must mean Dobson is wrong. Thank God.

He really feels that protecting people from hatred & violence will do that? No wonder people are moving away from the church with Dobson & others like him around.

  29. Hoodathunktick says:

You mean this rabid 18%er is actually acknowledging that the rest of the country has finally realized they are tired of the hate and fear screeching from the whackos? That maybe we can return to such dubious pursuits as rule of law over divine decree as interpreted by neurotics?

seriously damage morality and decency in the culture

So, a bill that protects people from being injured or killed because of the person’s hate of their sexual orientation, skin color or religion will damage morality and decency in our culture. Sorry Mr. Dobson, I think that condoning hate towards any group of people is more likely to damage morality and decency than providing protections for those groups.

As far as his letters to congress and Kathleen Sebelius, I’m sure both have received manyh calls, letters and e-mails. But, I suspect the majority of them were supporting this hate crime bill not bashing it.

  48. Realness says:

it’s a little OT, but I was reading this morning about the difference between a historically Protestant Christian country like Switzerland, and how Christianity there helped emphasize a thriving public sphere for the country, with a great deal more tolerance than the U.S. The U.S. seems to have taken a more maniacal tack with the Christian thing.

I know there’s obviously a lot of other factors. But it’s just interesting how that initial communal culture of Christianity really got perverted here in the U.S., almost to the point of 180 degree culture of selfishness and xenophobia we see today.

  49. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    OS Says:

I want a sensible plan for withdrawal from Afghanistan and an end to indiscriminate bombing in the Afghan-Pakistan region.

Non-Belivers are nearly as many as the shrinking “religious right”. More than 30% of 18-29 year-olds identify themselves as “agnostic, atheist, or non-denominational”. The Reichwing Psychochristians are a failing breed who’s own pathetic inability to govern has reduced them to this sorry state in such a short time. And all that was needed was to give them the keys to power for 6 years. They were tested and found lacking.

All religion only helps humans ignore their logical, rational thinking ability, by providing a stupid explanation that goes against the human’s own understanding of the world around him.
