Kristol: ‘Dick Cheney, Most Valuable Republican.’

While many Republicans are trying to ditch the legacy of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, one pundit is still clinging to the previous administration. In a column today titled “Don’t Wince. Fight!,” Bill Kristol offers a full-throated defense of Cheney, writing that Republicans cringing at the re-emergence of the former vice president have a “juvenile understanding of political dynamics.” Kristol then prescribes that to regain power, the GOP needs to embrace Bush’s policies and listen to Cheney:

kristl23The real question any Republican strategist should ask himself is this: What will Republican chances be in 2012 if voters don’t remember the Bush administration–however problematic in other areas–as successful in defending the country after 9/11? To give this issue away would be to accept a post-Herbert-Hoover-like-fate for today’s GOP. That’s why Republicans should listen carefully when Cheney gives a speech this week in which he’ll lay out the case for the surveillance, detention, and interrogation policies of the Bush administration in the war against terror.

Kristol concludes, “Dick Cheney probably won’t be the glamour quarterback of the Republican comeback. But he’s proving to be a heck of a middle linebacker.” Those considering taking the advice of the Kristol Ball should check out his July 2007 op-ed on “Why Bush Will Be A Winner.”

That’s a laughable comment coming from the Most Valuable Neocon. It should be no surprise that Kristol would want to draw attention away from himself and onto Cheney, though both have done more than enough to keep Republicans on the fringes for a long time.

  8. Marie says:

They always claim they kept us safe — avoiding the obvious –that 9/11 happened on their watch – after they ignored intel warnings, and after they ignored previous administration officials begging them to listen to their warnings.

When the first WTC was bombed in Clinton’s first month, he didn’t blame Bush I. Instead his administration captured the perpetrators, and he kept our soil safe for his term.

Not only did the willful arrogance of Bush II lead to disaster, his henchmen and cronies are trying to incite another incident to “prove” them as the only source of national protection.

Yet us examine the case of former Vice President Dick Cheney. He kept very quiet when the Republicans in Florida stole the 2000 Presidential Election. Team player or traitor to democracy? You decide.

Dick Cheney has yet to explain his very odd actions on nine-nine and nine-ten which led to the biggest terrorist attack in the history of the world on nine-eleven.

Dick Cheney seems to have been involved in the public outing of an undercover CIA agent: this is a felony crime.

Dick Cheney has profited from his connection with Halliburton Corporation, which owns KBR, which built 12 or 12 showers in Iraq in which American military servicemen were electrocuted to death.

All of the activities of former Vice President Dick Cheney need to be publicly investigated.

I really do think Rush has been sharing his oxcycotins with many members of the Republican party. It is impossible for all of these people to get all of these facts so wrong. They are not getting them wrong. Instead, they want us to believe this crap and give their political partners a free pass. Personally, I continue to believe this trick will not succeed. We need patience and lots of it in order to make it to the conclusion of this huge mess. These are crooks and as unappetizing as this exercise is going to be-we must do it. We must not forget our children are watching us. They are looking for a line-where should they draw it when they become our leaders. We owe them to STAND UP for what is right, no matter how painful it is going to be. We are a country of laws and No one is above the law.

  20. wizard2000 says:

“Enhanced interrogation techniques” was a phrase first coined by the GESTAPO, many members of which went onto fame and glory, and being tried and convicted for war crimes at Nuremberg.

So, certain Republicans in the Bush/Cheney administration decided to dust off the Gestapo’s “enhanced interrogation techniques” phraseology in an attempt, apparently, to “soften” the Gestapo torture practices, for propaganda purposes, that these Republicans had authorized to be used against detainees around the world.

And as suspected by many, the Republican-implemented Gestapo-style “enhanced interrogation techniques” weren’t used just to elicit information from detainees about potential terrorist plots against the United States, but were employed, for instance, in 2002 to get detainees to confess that there existed a solid operational and strategic link between Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi Baathist regime and al Qaeda (to justify Bush’s and Cheney’s lust for invading Iraq), while after March 2003, detainees were tortured in Iraq to get them to confess 1) where Hussein and his sons were, since they initially escaped capture, 2) where Hussein’s massive stockpiles of WMD were located, along with any information about his nuclear program, plus 3) anything Iraqi detainees knew about Hussein’s contacts with al Qaeda.

So, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney (in collusion with a bunch of similarly nutty neo-con Republicans) will be remembered for embracing Gestapo torture policies, practices and terminology. And maybe instead of Nuremberg, someday we can hold the war crimes trials of these culture of corruption Republicans at Williamsburg.

Researcher seeks probe of Bush-era ‘homicides by torture’
By David Edwards and Stephen Webster
    Published: May 15, 2009

    http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/05/15/investigator-up-to-100-detainees-have-died-in-us-custody/

A human rights researcher said Friday that any investigation into abuse of terror war prisoners should focus on what he called the Bush administration’s “homicides” — prisoners who died while being subjected to torture.

John Sifton, a private investigator with One World Research, appearing on Democracy Now with host Amy Goodman, said that up to 100 terror war prisoners have died in U.S. custody, many of whom were clearly murdered, some by way of torture.

“A review of homicide cases, however, shows that few detainee deaths have been properly investigated,” he noted in a feature story for The Daily Beast. “Many were not investigated at all. And no official investigation has looked into the connection between detainee deaths and the interrogation policies promulgated by the Bush administration.”

Senate torture hearings have examined the effectiveness of enhanced interrogation techniques, but Sifton feels this is the wrong focus.

“Those are the wrong debates to be having right now,” Sifton said.

William Kristol is, at his core, a frightened little boy. He’s afraid of what someone might do to him, not what anyone realistically will do. Bill Kristol just outlined the Republicans entire purpose, they want to resume power in 2012, and they will use any means to achieve that goal. The Republicans are in for a lesson in honesty. The truth is hard to spin around.

“We are tempted to comment, in these last days before the war, on the U.N., and the French, and the Democrats. But the war itself will clarify who was right and who was wrong about weapons of mass destruction. It will reveal the aspirations of the people of Iraq, and expose the truth about Saddam’s regime. It will produce whatever effects it will produce on neighboring countries and on the broader war on terror. We would note now that even the threat of war against Saddam seems to be encouraging stirrings toward political reform in Iran and Saudi Arabia, and a measure of cooperation in the war against al Qaeda from other governments in the region. It turns out it really is better to be respected and feared than to be thought to share, with exquisite sensitivity, other people’s pain. History and reality are about to weigh in, and we are inclined simply to let them render their verdicts.”

  121. spencers mom says:

The funny thing is (okay, perhaps funny isn’t the right word…) if Cheney had faded into obscurity like Bush seems to have done, little or none of this torture debate would have heated up as it has. Obama made it clear that, despite what We the People seem to want, he wanted to look forward, not back.

But Cheney’s insistence on being front and center, on going on show after show making dubious or flat out false claims, and for touting torture as both legal and necessary, has placed the prior administration’s actions into a spotlight that can’t be turned off on Obama’s say so.

So when Cheney lands in front of a Grand Jury and winds up in a prison cell with his buddies, he has no one to blame but himself.

I honestly can’t figure out the logic behind Cheney’s actions. But then again, I never could.

    PEACE

The plan was represented to Israeli prime minister then, Natanyahu about securing Israel, and toppling Saddam was one of the elements of Kristol and Neocons plan which Cheney later excuted happily for Neocons .

Of course Dick Cheney to Kristol is the ‘Most Valuable Republican’. !

Yes. There is a logic to this tactic. Personally the Dick has absolutely nothing to lose by going out on campaign and attack mode against the Dems and President Obama, especially portraying them as weak on national defense, weak on the “war on terrah” and “out of control government spending”

The Dick didn’t have to balls to serve in VietNam.
Now he is making sure the S.S. Sinking GOPiggies at least save something, anything, so his epitaph car read “5 Courageous Deferments and never had any shame defending the GOPiggies”

    Source: http://www.newamericancentury.org/iraqclintonletter.htm

He supports Dick Cheney for one reason and one reason only as the coward Dick Cheney is as well a member of the PNAC as well as Donald Rumsfeld, Jeb Bush, Paul Wolfowitz and others.
    Source: http://www.newamericancentury.org/statementofprinciples.htm

The PNAC are the criminals behind starting the War in Iraq based on known lies and actually the PNAC are only doing the dirty work for Israel in the Middle East. They all need to be brought before the courts and sentenced to life imprisonment or to death if need be as they are nothing but war criminals and cowards who find it easier to put other lives at risk then their own.

In speaking to reporters Wednesday, Holder also said it is possible the United States could cooperate with a foreign court’s investigation of Bush administration officials.

Holder spoke before the announcement that a Spanish magistrate had opened an investigation of Bush officials on harsh interrogation methods. Holder didn’t rule out cooperating in such a probe.

“Obviously, we would look at any request that would come from a court in any country and see how and whether we should comply with it,” Holder said.

“This is an administration that is determined to conduct itself by the rule of law and to the extent that we receive lawful requests from an appropriately created court, we would obviously respond to it,” he said.

Pressed on whether that meant the United States would cooperate with a foreign court prosecuting Bush administration officials, Holder said he was talking about evidentiary requests and would review any such request to see if the U.S. would comply.

The first step in prosecutions are evidentiary hearings, so Holder’s caveat could just be a linear one, meaning one step at a time, as it were.

Obama Taps GOP’s Huntsman for China Envoy Post

Huntsman is actually a pretty good guy. The GOP hates him for his moderate position. He supports gay marriage and makes an issue about global warming. He also has many other moderate view on things.

My only problem with this appointment is that Obama is taking a moderate Republican Governor out of the picture and Huntsman will be replaced by a conservative. That what he did in Arizona. I wonder why he keeps doing this.

Lieutenant Governor Gary Herbert is considerably more conservative than Huntsman.

Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert and Gov. Jon Huntsman have twice shared the ballot, but the two share little else.

While Huntsman has plowed a moderately progressive path on topics such as civil unions and global warming, Herbert trends more heavily to the right.

“There are absolutely clear differences between the two guys and I think they both made those differences clear,” said Joe Demma, Herbert’s chief of staff.

Huntsman has received national recognition and flak from the conservative Utah Legislature for his stance on climate change, enlisting Utah in a regional initiative to significantly reduce green-house gasses in coming years.

Herbert, though, is “not where Huntsman is,” Demma said.

    “Global
    Photo Gallery
    Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert
warming needs to be realized before anyone talks about it, the science is not all there,” Demma said. “Gary Herbert puts question marks on things that the governor has put periods on.”

Civil unions is another policy that the two disagree on, Demma said.

Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo, says Herbert is “in tune” with the majority of Utahns on social issues.

“The values that he embraces are the values that he lives his life by,” Bramble said. “He doesn’t have to put on any kind of facade for the delegates or the citizens. What you see is what you get with Gary.”

    I agree with Bill.

Cheney is the best the GOP has. It isn’t Newt, Palin or Jindal thats for sure.

Texas Gov Perry’s desires to break away from the U.S.A. will really go far in a GOP primary. Although not very far in a General election.

Cheney has got to be the essence of the GOP as Rush is.

Now if you think as a Republican this is favorable to any viable candidate aspirations with the same views of yours making any political election gains in the future. You should understand that that same Wall Street mentality of recklessness in the GOP does not and will not qualify for a bail out as it fails.
