Today, RNC Chairman Michael Steele spoke at the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) “Celebration of American Values” Leadership Forum. During his speech today, Steele criticized Barack Obama’s potential Supreme Court nominee, saying the President is “looking to put Doctor Phil on the Court.”
Steele also played to his NRA audience by fear-mongering that Democrats may take away Americans’ guns. He claimed that those guns are more necessary than ever since Guantanamo detainees may soon be in the United States and the public will have to defend itself:
It is ironic, to say the least, that at the same time Democrats in Congress are threatening to deny Americans their second amendment right to own a firearm and defend their families and homes, they are considering bringing terrorists like 9-11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed and other Al Qaeda detainees to our communities once the President follows through on his campaign promise to close Guantanamo Bay.
Since Obama announced that he was shutting down the Guantanamo Bay prison, conservatives have been warning that terrorists will soon be “living in your backyard.” “We don’t want these terrorists in our neighborhoods,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said yesterday on Fox News. “We don’t want them in our jails.” (Of couse, Guantanamo detainees transferred to the U.S. for trials would actually be housed in federal prisons, where dozens of dangerous terrorists are already held. In fact, the U.S. has already successfully prosecuted 145 terrorism cases in federal court, a sharp contrast to the series of debacles in Guantanamo prosecutions.)
Even though Steele was the only candidate running for the RNC chairmanship who didn’t own a gun, he has happily picked up the gun industry’s talking points touted by conservatives like Glenn Beck and Chuck Norris. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) has said that the American people should be armed and ready to “fight back” on “this issue of the energy tax.”
Just two years ago, Steele came out forcefully against assault weapons, saying that they were “overkill.” “If you want to talk about gun control, that’s where you need to start,” said Steele. “We’ve got 300 gun laws on the books right now. At the end of the day, it’s about how we enforce the law.” However, a few months ago he changed his mind and said that a ban on assault weapons was just the first step in the Obama administration’s plan “repeal the 2nd Amendment.”
“they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
May 15th, 2009 at 4:25 pmDo the world a favor Steele: Get a gun and shoot yourself!
May 15th, 2009 at 4:28 pmI guess Steele has drunk too much of the fearmongering Kool Aid. The utter ludicrousness of this statement by Steele makes my blood boil!
May 15th, 2009 at 4:29 pmSince Obama announced that he was shutting down the Guantanamo Bay prison, conservatives have been warning that terrorists will soon be “living in your backyard.”
No problem. When President Obama gives me my terrorist, I’m going to keep him in the dog run.
May 15th, 2009 at 4:29 pmJust how many guns have the democrats taken away?
May 15th, 2009 at 4:29 pmBut Republicans need their guns to kill police officers, Unitarians, Democratic Party chairmen, abortion doctors, all all those other nefarious terrorists that threaten their communities!
May 15th, 2009 at 4:31 pmYes, they discovered that Anthrax is not very effective.

No one escapes from the Supermax Prison, Senator, relax . .
Do these politicians ever READ??
May 15th, 2009 at 4:37 pmThank you, Mr. Steele, for once again proving my theory.
The list of tired GOP tactics:
1. Accuse your opponents of the very actions that you are guilty of.
2. Use name-calling.
3. Use race-baiting.
4. Fear-monger as often as possible.
5. Avoid responsibility and accountability at all costs.
6. Lie, lie, and lie some more because facts are irrelvant and unnecessary.
A classic two-pointer!

May 15th, 2009 at 4:37 pmSteele and Cheney are perfect “bedfellows?” Steele is quit a doltish animated character.
May 15th, 2009 at 4:39 pmwow, no wonder the Republican Party is down to nothing but the most cowardly little frightened pansies
noone else would let steele terrorize them with such stupidity
of course, steele knows that most of their ignorant, frightened base will not bother to check into it and find out that “in our communities” is actually “housed in max security prisons with other incredibly violent people” and therefore no threat to any community
right wingers think America is weak because THEY are weak
May 15th, 2009 at 4:40 pmTerrorists? America has been terrorizing the residents of the third world off and on since 1898, for over one hundred and ten years. Our twenty-first century terrorism includes ongoing criminal occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq. Try reading a few history books, Mr. Steele, before mouthing off.
The 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution refers to a “well-regulated milita,” not to private parties with basements filled with guns and ammo, not to vigilante groups that ride at night in search of victims.
May 15th, 2009 at 4:42 pmPerhaps Steele could explain to us how guns could defend us from a 9/11 attack? Or how they could defend us against a suicide bomber?
Perhaps instead Steele is just suggesting that his audience get themselves a lot of guns and just start shooting scary-looking brown people pre-emptively.
May 15th, 2009 at 4:42 pmhang on there molly, to right wingers ALL brown people are scary looking

May 15th, 2009 at 4:46 pmGun owners need to have a mental exam every 2 years to see if they are a danger to society.

Really? Khalid Sheik Mohammed is going to be in line right behind me at Kroger? Or sitting at the next table at Applebee’s? Why would he be freed if we’re convinced he was behind the 9/11 disasters?

Well we HAD that government for 8 years—it tortured, it intercepted our communications, it denied citizens due process, it threw away habeas corpus, it withheld and/or destroyed the “business of the people” (documents) and so on.

May 15th, 2009 at 5:17 pmWe need a gun law that states that before you buy a gun you need to take a bullet from that gun in your arm or leg. This way, when you use that gun, you might think twice about the pain you’re about to inflict on another human being.

May 15th, 2009 at 5:20 pmwow. reading that quote from michael steele, i couldn’t help but think of the scene in “to kill a mockingbird” when the lynch mob shows up at the jail. is this the “small town america” the gop wants to foster?
May 15th, 2009 at 5:22 pmSteele is only pandering to one of their contributors and helping them greatly with huge sales lately:
Gun Rights Contribution for 2008:
Democrats: $239,362 (13%)
Rethuglicans: $1,658,292 (87%)
Gun Control Contribution for 2008:
Democrats: $46,750 (96%)
Rethuglicans: $2,000 (4%)
Gun rights are funding the Rethuglicans and out-funding the gun control contributors to the Democrats. The only way this will change is more unnecessary death related to irresponsible gun owners shooting innocent people.

I suspect the Feds will leave Montana alone as long as, as the article suggests, all guns and bullets sold and used in Montana are manufactured in Montana, and as long as no trouble comes from that state. They won’t have to do anything, because the tranquility won’t last long.
Before long, some Montana citizen is going to get robbed or shot by another Montana citizen who would never have been allowed to get a gun legally anywhere else — perhaps an ex-con or a person with a history of mental illness. Then lawsuits are going to be filed — the first one is going to be about enforcement of the Brady Bill.
Or somebody is going to go to Montana, pick up a bunch of unregistered and unlicensed firearms, and then go back to his home state and do a Seung-Hui Cho. Then you can bet the Feds are going to get involved, and they will have widespread support of the American people.
Of course, Montana might talk of seceding. But that will be a rather toothless threat.
May 15th, 2009 at 6:15 pmThat should read I WATCHED the left get smeared
May 15th, 2009 at 6:16 pmPersonally I don’t think anyone should be able to own a gun without taking a class that certifies them as proficient with a gun. We make people take a test to be able to drive a car, so why should we not have the same requirements for someone to have an implement that can easily kill someone?

The people owning handguns are more likely to kill themselves or a member of their family than they are to kill an intruder. And unless they visit the shooting range on a regular basis, chances are if they try to shoot an intruder they will miss by a mile and the intruder will shoot them.
People should have to prove they are proficient with a hand gun before they can own one and they should have to be certified on a regular basis. You know, like we have to do with a driver’s license.

I have nothing against people owning guns. I do have something against people owning guns who don’t know how to use them. Also, unless you spend regular time on a shooting range, your chances of shooting an intruder are pretty small. It’s more likely you will shoot a family member or your dog than you will shoot the intruder.
But, if you have to own that gun to feel like a real man, more power to you. Anything that helps.

I’m old enough to remember when I disagreed with conservatives, but wasn’t reduced to eye-bugging astonishment when they opened their gobs. How anyone could be credulous enough to believe that the residents of Gitmo were going to be turned loose in neighborhoods all across the nation is beyond me. How can anyone be that stupid?
The United States has 2.3 million prisoners behind bars. Something over 40,000 of them are incarcerated in supermax conditions. The piddly numbers of actual terrorists housed at Gitmo can easily be accommodated.
May 15th, 2009 at 6:59 pmbecause of those people who has no regret against anyone, this country in already a mess, and will go to in more crisis.
May 15th, 2009 at 7:08 pmalmost everyone has a gun and they already using on street by gangs.Good job Steele, keep bringing those kind of topics.
After eight years of suffering the brickbats of the Repugs in government, who were lying through their teeth while they drove the nation into a ditch, who shredded the Constitution, who led us into a war of choice through deceit and falsely contrived (so-called) intelligence; who forsook any and all responsibility for the average man while they rewarded their cronies, I don’t feel any obligation to refrain from using any language I choose in my opinions, for the sake of civility. We tried civility, we tried giving them a chance, even after they stole the election in 2000, we tried waiting patiently to see if our suspicions and fears of their ignorance and arrogance might be misplaced — and we got insults, dead soldiers, a ruined economy, a corrupt justice system, a loss of integrity and honor in the world, and an economy that may take decades to restore.
May 15th, 2009 at 7:28 pmSo when I want to refer to them as repugniscum, or rethugs, or liars, or basturds, or SoBs or whatever else comes to mind, I do not feel I should be limited — in fact, many words of description for what I think of repugs are insufficient.
Very few people have less of my respect than this glory hound. But on this topic, I partially agree with him.
However, the threat is not the idea that detainees will be transferred to prisons within the U.S. The real threat comes from the multi-millions among the undocumented population in the U.S., who have been infiltrating this counry long before 911.
To think that a proportion of these illegals might not be extremist Islamic terrorists who may begin a “ground war” here illustrates the highest degree of ignorance imaginable.
But it wasn’t Obama who took the guns away from the citizens of New Orleans after Katrina. It was the National Guard under the Republican Administration.
May 15th, 2009 at 7:35 pmThe biggest threat to the personel security of the American people is not terrorism, it is the ease of getting guns. You only have to see the news everyday to know the damage due to wide spread availability of guns. From Virgina Tech shooting to Columbine to Arkansas and Tennessee church shootings to Pittsburg cops shooting, to the Binghamton NY community center. All shootings, within the last few years, and of course many more. The right is scared that Obama will take their guns away either because they know tragedies their paranoia produces and people are getting sick of it, or else they are just trying to find another reason to hate Obama. We also have to believe that the gun manufacturers have found a way to make a lot of dough off of mental illness.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:24 pmI’m surprised to hear Steele speak like this; he’s previously sounded like a freedom hating leftist in the past !
May 15th, 2009 at 8:28 pmBilbo Hussein Baggins @ 84, I agree. Once a gun is sold – bye-bye. Do these people ever come back for a psych-test? Do they keep up on their skills? Driving a car has more rigors in testing.
Another thing (it can be considered a TRoHS’s Corollary #2 but, trust me – it’s not)
An ex-high school buddy of mine was in to robbing cars for anything he could get his hands on for drugs and cigarettes, etc. He was alright in 8th grade but, made a turn for the worse in high school. I slowly got away from him as he found new druggies to hang with luckily. Once, he robbed a Semi-truck and got a small gun out of it and was bragging about it. It scares me to think of what would happen if this guy was set-off for anything like road-rage.

May 16th, 2009 at 12:22 amWould the NRA ever go Global?
Thinking of Afghan with all the men carrying weapons instead of food or books.

Pakistan militants wrapped in clothing..
So many areas where there is no Laws Restricting. Not even an age limit.
One could see the Association change to the “IRA”
International Rifle Association.
What better way to support the Republican Party then with all these new members?.
We don’t want your guns. We just want your women.

May 16th, 2009 at 9:38 amWhy do repugs continue to incite fear into our communities with false arguments like this? Have we not produced our own terrorists? Have we never incarcerated dangerous individuals before? Have we not had our own convicted domestic terrorists imprisoned?
May 16th, 2009 at 9:42 amThis is a baseless argument meant solely to alarm people who don’t think further about what they are being told. Unfortunately, after years of dumbing down the American public by the media, and the propaganda spewed by the Fox channels, the public is buying into this – including some people in Congress who should know better. Apparently some of our officials and their staffs don’t do a lot of thinking.
After the TORTURE that Khalid Sheik Mohammed and other Al Qaeda detainees have been through, I have news for Steele, they REFUSE to live in the U.S. so he may want to stop spewing that falsehood.
May 16th, 2009 at 10:35 amIMHO:
I think he’s right for the wrong reason. Right wing domestic terrorism is becoming the largest violence epidemic waiting to happen. I can see a need to defend against these psychos.
I personally support ownership of guns, but don’t own one. But it seems that the focus of the need for personal weapons, as our military has grown (and grown and grown…), has changed from external violence to internal.
But gun safety and responsibility must go hand in hand with ownership. Owners should be required to prove confidence via training and testing. I’d like to see guns indelibly marked and linked to the purchaser. The owner is automatically guilty of any crime or accident caused by the weapon. While the user of the weapon is difficult to determine, the weapon isn’t. I believe that many gun owners are cowards and forcing responsibility on them may make them think once about buying a gun since it puts their precious asses on the line.
I don’t know what has happened to the relative (weapons dealer) of the Columbine killers, but without his disgusting lack of stewardship of those weapons those kids would be alive. He should be rotting in jail for life as a multiple murderer with no chance of parole.

If sex-ed promotes teen pregnancy then confession promotes sin.
We need guns to protect ourselves from Republicans pulling off another coup!

We don’t need assault rifles to prevent a Republican coup.
May 16th, 2009 at 1:20 pmDaisy Red Riders will be sufficient.
Does Steele realize that he is the RNC Chairman because Barack Obama is President? Otherwise, we would have never heard of Steele. He is token black man in the Republiccan Party. What a pathetic public figure.

May 17th, 2009 at 6:50 pmI am not against ownership of guns, BUT here the GOP goes AGAIN with the FEAR factor………
May 18th, 2009 at 11:57 amJust a few facts from the DOJ website over the course of the years.
In the late 90’s early 2000’s, legally armed citizens STOPPED 4 times as many crimes as police did.
Several years back, a precise count was 2.5 million violent crimes had been stopped in a year, by legally armed citizens.
No I don’t support fully automatic weapons. I do support rifles, carbines, and handguns, as long as they are legally obtained, and not in the hands of a felon. My 9mm was given to me by an “X” secret service agent, I will treasure that weapon forever, it was used in the service to our country, and yes, it was USED.
I am “X” military, honorable discharge, trained in the proper use of the weapon, AND when the use of deadly force is proper. I have personally been called upon by neighbors to come over, because their door was open when they got home, and in one case, I held an ARMED robber down, hile the police were called, and until they arrived. Turns out the guy was a fugitive, with more charges pending, including 2 counts of murder.
My neighbor was glad that I was a legally armed citizen. It’s NOT for everyone, but something to consider, Kennesaw Georgia. One of the lowest levels of violent crimes in the country.. Check out why.
Please, do not take away PROPER weapons from decent citizens, enforce the law, and take them away from people who ilegally own them.
May 18th, 2009 at 1:58 pmFUD from the left:
The wrong wing is against gun control because they are stockpiling guns for the violent overthrow of our liberal, bloated, Nazi (funny, another name for this is “Corporatism”), socialist, fetus killing, born people saving, welfare loving, and nauseum, federal. The need all of these weapons in order to kill off enough of the gov’t employees until it’s small enough to drown in a bathtub.
Then they will proceed with a pogrom against libruls until the US is back to the god fearing (why fear an all loving god?), christian nation it never was.
I know this is true, I read it on them internets.
