Uruguay lifts ban on gays serving openly in the military.

vazquezOn Thursday, Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez announced that his government will “allow gays to join the armed forces by scrapping military rules that define homosexuality as a disorder.” Vazquez explained his decision saying, “The Uruguayan government does not discriminate against citizens based on their political, ethnic or sexual identity.” Urugquay’s Deputy Defense Minister elaborated, “There were a series of rules … regarding the psycho-physical requirements (for entry into the armed forces) in which homosexuality was seen as a sexual identity disorder, and this is what is being repealed.” President Obama insists that he still intends to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, which bans gays from openly serving in the U.S. military, but has not said when he will begin the process.

Great. Uruguay is now more progressive than the good ole USA. Thanks to the Republicans fear of teh gays, we seem more and more backward. WTF?

  2. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

We have become very backward. The world is leaving the US behind. However, the US is now in the hands of progressives, and we will make progress, despite the Republicans.

  3. Jane E. Schneider says:

Oh, good, Rachel Maddow will be so happy that she can use the word ‘Uruguay’ again! :D

  4. Bozo The Neoclown says:

    what’s wrong with this picture:
a third world nation allows gays to serve in the military but the rapture freaks in this country have a fit over the idea yet won’t serve themselves.

  5. hormiga brava chavez says:

Wow – this is good. Now when in hell will Pres. Obama repeal DADT? I hope this motivates him to get moving.

    – - How ’bout we let Texas secede and adopt Uruguay as the new 50th state? Huh….huh? Oh wait, Uruguay may be too smart for that.

  7. Bobwurst says:

Wing nuts are crazy. they’re scared to death that the terrists are gonna kill them, but they won’t let gay men and women fight them. Jon Stewart, said the other night, about the discharging of the 51 arabic speakers because of DADT that torture might make them talk, but it ain’t gonna make them talk English.

Its the same thing with guns. They’re scared of the terrists, but they fought to keep the terrists right to buy guns at gun shows in the aftermath of 9-11.

    _____________

See… the problem is that IF DADT were repealed… and gays COULD serve… all those rapture freaks still in the closet would simply have one less reason to avoid service.

I’ll be glad when same-sex marriage is legal in every state. That way the GOP can stop using it to gain the religious wingnuts’ votes. They’re not going to be able to repeal abortion rights laws. I wonder when the wingnuts will realize that and start focusing on issues to affect all Americans??
Rightwingnuts are always screaming about “BIG GOVERNMENT” taking away their guns and their rights but they’re always trying to dictate how people live, who they marry and what they do with their bodies?!

    Badmoodman,
If Texas seceds, then Israel becomes #50. Uriguay can still be #51.

  12. Megaloptera McWars says:

I have a question — is there an executive action President Obama could take to get around the the current legislation? Because even if congress simply repeals DADT, which they should do at any rate, that would restore the right of the military to inquire about an applicant’s sexual orientation. So if congress doesn’t plug the gap in banning discrimination while they are entering and serving the country, could the president do so with an executive order? Would it make a difference if he did so now?

  13. Witch1 says:

Numbers on state’s don’t mean anything, Israel is already #1 and running our country..Blessings, we really need them.

Let’s send Joe the Non-Plumber to Uruguay for a “special” report on the situation.

  16. tuckgraph says:

Not long ago, this development would make Uruguay a terrist state. Now, the wingers will probably say it’s a byproduct of socialism. But the bottom line, a world wide movement like this could make the military of other countries more diverse and stronger than ours.

Frame it like the nuclear arms race. We must maintain superior fire power!

  17. TeleMan says:

Ooh, a gay thread. I wonder if Daryll will show up to proselytize or if he’s too busy shaking off the devil.

But do they approve of torture, like we do?

  26. iamwhoiam says:

There’s a very long new interview with Obama in Newsweek. Questions on every issue from Guantanamo to Star Trek, but not even one question about DADT.

  27. iamwhoiam says:

What i wanted to say before i hit ’send’ too quickly, is that someone should ask the president straight to his face if he’s going to repeal it. It’s not like this president is running away from journalists or questions.

    Buckie Boy Says:

But do they approve of torture, like we do?

The only TORTURE that happened in Latin America, happened during the criminal military dictatorships sponsored by the US. Torture came to South America via CIA and ‘the Schools of the Americas’. The French also helped!
You see… Torture came from the USA long before Abu Graihb happened. If only the American people knew what has been done in their name…

    Prosecution NOW!!!!!

Good for the Prez of Uruguay! As usual, these small countries are the ones to show the rest of the world how a free society ought to be run.

And don’t forget under George Bush the Crips & the Bloods, other gang members, and those who have dreamed of training for an armed militia like al-Qaida, were also allowed to join our military to get additional training!

But gays can’t join. *rolling eyes*

  34. God says:

A big meh! Who cares, like its some big h0m*victory.

We can now be uneducated grunts in a 4th world army that could be wiped off the planet by dolphins with lasers on their heads

  35. Snowman says:

I hope the Obama administration feels humiliated by this news. We kick Tl. Choi out, while a small, often ignored Latin American country leapfrogs us on gay rights.

    Get with the program, Barack!

  38. rightwing-leftwing says:

    Hey dbadass,

The trolls tried to hijack the threads, “Conservatives Express Hope … ” and the “Rumsfeld … ” threads (and one other). I’m surprised that they didn’t attack this one but, I guess since this is a thread about another country, the trolls are not interested.

At least the trolls are “selective” in thier damage :/
    lol!
