In a 30-minute interview with Newsweek this past week, President Obama answers a wide array of questions dealing with the challenges he’s had to confront in office. The president points to his decision to send 17,000 more troops to Afghanistan as the hardest thing he’s had to do so far. Obama also argues that Americans appreciate a president who is willing to candidly discuss difficult and complex problems:
But one of the things I’ve actually been encouraged by—and I learned during the campaign—was the American people, I think, not only have a toleration but also a hunger for explanation and complexity, and a willingness to acknowledge hard problems. I think one of the biggest mistakes that is made in Washington is this notion you have to dumb things down for the public.
Also during the interview, Obama defended his efforts to reach out to Iran. “I think that there is the ability of an Islamic Republic of Iran to maintain its Islamic character while, at the same time, being a member in good standing of the international community and not a threat to its neighbors. … If it doesn’t work, the fact that we have tried will strengthen our position in mobilizing the international community, and Iran will have isolated itself, as opposed to a perception that it seeks to advance that somehow it’s being victimized by a U.S. government that doesn’t respect Iran’s sovereignty.”
Thank you.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:19 amIt’s nice to have a president that can understand and discuss difficult and complex problems.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:25 amIn my opinion, if the torturers and warmongers are given a pass on Obama’s watch, anything positive he says or does will forever be overshadowed.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:27 amHe’s right; a President doesn’t have to dumb it down for the public.
Unfortunately, he’s got to dumb it down for journalists, and they’re usually the gatekeepers.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:29 amAlso during the interview, Obama defended his efforts to reach out to Iran.
Why is it that the media wants Obama to defend everything he says or does, while Bush was given a complete pass on all the outrageous, dangerous decisions he made all those years. I’m getting so sick of reading, “Obama defended….”
May 17th, 2009 at 11:32 amIt’s time for in depth investigations and open hearing on the abuses of the Bush administration .
At this stage BO the American public doesn’t know didely .
The patriot act , signing statements , wiretapping millions of innocent Americans telephones , the loss of posse comitatus , torture, and our invasion of Iraq ,ect., must ALL be explained in full ! Lawbreaking MUST be prosecuted !
Reinstate the constitutions protections now !
May 17th, 2009 at 11:33 ami’ve been worried about “dumbing down” since my 24 yr old daughter was in first grade… not so much her older brother…
but i could see it happening even then… i think she got out of the system just in time…
yes, thank you, sir… keep reminding US…

Obama: I can’t tell Israel not to fear Iran
By Haaretz Service
United States President Barack Obama has said he cannot tell Israel not to fear Iran’s nuclear ambitions, in comments published Saturday ahead of a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“I understand very clearly that Israel considers Iran an existential threat, and given some of the statements that have been made by President Ahmadinejad, you can understand why,” Obama told Newsweek. The magazine will publish the full interview on May 25.
“Their calculation of costs and benefits are going to be more acute,” he added. “They’re right there in range and I don’t think it’s my place to determine for the Israelis what their security needs are.”
Obama’s comments came after CIA chief Leon Panetta informed Netanyahu last week that the U.S. President Obama demanded that Israel not launch a surprise attack on Iran.

May 17th, 2009 at 11:35 amObama, of course, is correct about this unless . . .
1) you’re a right-wing radio rant-jockey or
2) you’re GDumbya and afraid to expose your own lack of capability to deal with complex ideas and
3) as usual, IOKIYAR;
But the remaining 75 percent of the public appreciates his opinion about this and his ability to deal with it himself.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:39 amJudging from post #9, ConservativeForProgress is obviously one of the 25 percenters to which I refer in post #10.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:41 amIn the past 8 years things didn’t need to be dumbed down, they already were that way. Now the conservatives are having a hard time getting around the fact we have an intelligent president. And the only ones who missed complexity were the neocons that got us into the mess we are in now. Now it is time for the adults to take over and clean things up. But go ahead, keep standing on the sidelines and complaining. It is what you neocons do best.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:43 amConservativeForProgress Says:
In my opinion, Obama is a master at dumbing things down through catchy words or phrases that fit on a bumper sticker. That served him well in the campaign, but now that he is in power, he is seeing that there are many more complexities involved.
Wow. What a tool. It’s true you’re entitled to your opinion, but it would be an improvement if it was based on facts. Reality. Anything but your own blinkered delusions.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:44 amI appreciate not just the fact that the president doesn’t need to dumb things down for the public, but that we’ve got a president who realizes how complex the world and our domestic and foreign issues really are. Nice not having someone who thinks everything is really simple, and all you need to do is go with your gut.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:45 amI can think of a few other big mistakes.
Not doing everything you can to push for single payer health care. (Bush is a jackass, but when he wanted something like war or tax cuts for the rich, he got them!)
Reversing yourself and refusing to release torture photos.
Reversing yourself and reprising military commissions.
Escalating war in Afghanistan and Pakistan to no apparent end.
Refusing to cap pay of bank executives.
Rescuing banks instead of precarious home owners.
Tim Geithner.
Larry Summers.
Stimulus that is too small.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:46 amYeah, well, we’re familiar with your opinions around here, and most of us have discovered that they’re not particularly informed, insightful or tethered to the real world.
But thanks for your input.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:48 amSlightly OT…Sorry….Implying one thing during the campaign and doing the opposit after elected puts everything at a suspect level..
It seems to me since the USA has been supporting Israel totaly forever the USA should be able to tell the Israel gov to stop killing all their neighbors and grabbing up the land..I think all military support should be suspended forever….Then we have our own gov. on a war effort forever path…Both should stop this madness…Like relegion is big business so is war, time to rid our gov’s. of both..Seperation of church and state also seperation from war’s..Far to much money and way to many lives lost on both issues and little to no fund’s going to spread Peace….America and Israel both most feared around the world for their past performance, sharp tongues and saber ratteling, not only that both are most likely to take lives and land…P.B. & J
May 17th, 2009 at 11:51 amAnd yet, Obama keeps reversing his promises and worse, using bush’s justifications for violating the Constitution and the rule of law with telecom immunity, State Secrets, tribunals, detainee Habeas Corpus and the torture photos.
That’s not just dumbing down, that’s insulting the intelligence of the American public. Obama, I call you Liar.
May 17th, 2009 at 11:55 amClever Conservative Catchphrases got us in this mess and Pres. Obama will need to speak honestly about our dire predicament at home and abroad. The jury is certainly still out on his ability to do so with some of his decisions lately. Lip service about Isreal is not helping to solve their long-term prospects in the Middle East.
May 17th, 2009 at 12:04 pmObama was dumped on by the Cheney/Bush administration. The loose ends keep showing up and Obama has double duty of moving the country ahead, and cleaning up the mess left behind. Its not easy, requires patience and a great deal of pragmatism. He has been dealt a lousy hand in a historic perspective.
May 17th, 2009 at 12:09 pmI am still in Obama’s court and very comfortable giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Not only does he possess the intellect to think into the future while dealing with the present, he believes the public has the ability to comprehend more than which the media and politicians give them credit. People may need a few more repetitions to grasp complex issues, but they are not stupid, (well, at least 80% of them are not so) and when presented with the facts and the truth, they develop informed opinion.
Thank you, President Obama, for giving us credit for possessing rational ability that the media and Washington fail to recognize.
May 17th, 2009 at 12:11 pmPoliticians and pundits alike must believe they are so above the rest of us that they have to dumb down the information for our comprehension — just another exaple of how far afield is their thinking.
May 17th, 2009 at 12:15 pmWhere we are today is a horrible example of what happens when people are not given credit for comprehension and instead are fed propaganda, are misled, and key points of information are withheld.

In order to logically take that position, then you’d have to have bird’s eye of what knows and sees.
And a mere mortal judging God. Whatever God does by definition of the word GOD is ALL knowing.
Like Grahman, the all maker and creator of it all. Just another word for God, which in your language refers to an all powerful force that is omipotent (meaning knows everything).

Ok normallly I wouldnt answer a trivial question or if I did I’d make you wait 1000 years.
But since you are so insistent. Your shirt has no color. Just reflects like frequencies back to your eyes.
A serious of photochemical reactions takes place and your mind assigns really nothing value to your shirt which little tiny biocircuits in your brain create an illusion. In your mind. Simple perceptual stuff.
Your color of your shirt is really, nothing, no color and would be a greyish/black surrounded by ooze.
Without light and also the perceptual illusions created by your brain. Its really nothing. Especially if you are color blind and lack the color receptors in your eyes to help create the illusion.
SO the answer is, its no color. Just want you make believe it is.

Just b/c you label yourself after your indoctrination and fashionable arguments at your coffee shops and cant wrap your head around that. God, is just semantics. Means the all-maker. By denying that there is anything around you, you are denying God. A sily conclusion if you trust your senses around you, b/c after all, there is all around you so some All-Maker made it
Call it Brahman to eliminate your indoctrication biases.
Of course, we could debate that you are the creator of all that you see around you.
Hence, though, you mind find in that semantical trap of creating it all in your head and therefore fall under a certain definition of God.
But being a solipsistic center of the Universe can be a bit boring creating it all. Just ask me. Oh wait, I created you.
Atheism falls apart in later levels of philosophical study as do kids grades when they parrot what they dont know what they are talking about and cant respond to the easy debate questions about the made believe topic.

So guessing God’s plan b/c it doesnt meet your sense of humor assumes you are smart enough to know God’s plans and perhaps it was to make your humorous readings.
What’s funny is the feel the need to respond to God and also in such a negative way to injure their chances in the next life when they break through the membraine into the next incarnation of teaching their soul.

Just simple perception 201 stuff. Everything you see, hear, touch, anything connected to your sensory pathways. Which are prone to error. Its just figures of light playing out in your mind.
I am sorry you never studied the human body and how it works before. There are pathways and those pathways lead nerve impulses to different sections to be interpreted.
All of which can be manipulated. I mean really this is like 400 year old teachings that have been proved over and over again.
What color is a guy’s shirt if they guy is blind? What color is a shirt, if the observer is color-bliind.
Or one of other several visual disturbance disorders. Perhaps a more appropriate and specific question couldve been asked so a clear answer could be given rather than having to teach you human biology and perception which takes longer.
Now God has rested on this silly gedankenexperiment

Excellent point. You should definitely email him with that sobering point, as he’s clearly not seeing it. Make him realize that the Republicans are so desperate to resume power that they will gladly admit that Bush and Cheney committed war crimes so that they can use it to hurt Obama. Its simple philosophy boy. The greatest philosophers in the world can agree on one thing. You cant prove anything.
Now, to be a contrarian, I am sure you relatively young is that if we cant prove anything. Then of course, atheism is just another form of religion.
THe more logical viewpoint of all that surrounds you is that it was created by something. As I mentioned, Brahman is the Hindo God that by definition is the All-Maker.
HENCE creating all. Then from there, you cant argue effectively the semantic debates of one culture naming a Brahman or one who calls it God.
Whats funny is the contrarian debate by most atheists is usually out of a psychological need to not conform. Well of course that is all and well but unusual as you are a “sheeple” website where all news stories are slanted and cherrypicked to influence your mind and way of thinking.
The answer is it is not bad to be a skeptic, but to be a blind skeptic poses some fundamental problems.
If you look around. There is something there. It came from somewhere. Now that’s fine to be a skeptic about that. Rene Descartes was a wondeful skeptic that rejected all religion, invented scientific method and argued famous with John Locke in the Rational-Empirical debates.
But quite literally to just say you are a skeptic. It means nothing. You have defined zero variables and easily picked apart in any philosophical debate.
Atheism has its place, as I dont believe what I am seeing after I took all that LSD. But not much of a useful philosophical term beyond highschool philosophy and certain would fall flat in an epistemiological debate.
Silly boy. I suggest you log off the internet and read some more. Being a skeptic according to Descartes lead to the method of Radical Doubt. THen to Rationalism and Locke pretty much thumped him discussion of Crusades and why my God is different than your God.
Its simple, a coffee shop clown saying I am antheist with really no understanding of the term, its history or implications in much more advance philosophical teachings. Well go such another cup of joe.
Come back when you study for another infinite number of years

Actually, the more logical point of view is that the Universe always existed, even before our particular galaxy formed within it from the explosion of a singularity. There was no “beginning” and there will be no “end”. It is man’s difficulty in grasping the infinite that leads some to believe that there MUST have been a first day. But what would have been there before that “first day”? A universe with nothing in it? That’s highly illogical and makes less sense than saying some supreme being created everything.
I agree with unbelievable in that Man created Gods to explain what he could not understand.

Why the hell would he come here to argue with…..himself?
What a stupid God.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:40 pmI really wish the wingnut would spell god with a small “g” out of respect!
May 17th, 2009 at 3:59 pm“Obama: ‘One of the biggest mistakes…is this notion you have to dumb things down for the public.’”
Because people are aware that you are reinstating the ‘Military Commission’, escalating the War in Afghanistan, people are aware that the abuses in Guantanamo prison did not stop when you took office, re branding the illegal occupation of Iraq, people are aware of your support for the Terrorist State of israel, people are also aware that you are letting the USA War Criminals get away and helping them to cover it up, and that your promises are as strong as though they were etched in the surface of a lake!
May 17th, 2009 at 4:18 pmI didn’t read the comments before posting mine… after reading ‘god’s’, I think yes! You do have to dumb things down. There realy are people out there that need the information to be broken down…
May 17th, 2009 at 4:22 pmFlag “God.”
What a f ucking dumb ass.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:45 pmIt’s Sunday, and the fat, pimply, greasy-haired kid that calls itself God may have already started hitting the cough syrup. It do cut and paste a lot of poorly constructed “arguments”. Big brother’s garbage?
May 17th, 2009 at 5:15 pmWow! Imagine that. Most Americans are not stupid. Heckuva job Pres.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:16 pmThank God. I’m so tired of being talked to (and sometimes lied to) like a child by Washington and the media. We’re not the “ignorant masses” and deserve more.

Go away you ignorant punkass troll. Nothing you do here will make your lonely, dismal, and pathetic life any better. You are ignorant. You are a punk. No one anywhere in the entire world cares about the idiotic stupidity you want to spew. Just go kill yourself punk
May 17th, 2009 at 6:21 pmAny “dumbing down” is required only by the GOP base. As their party becomes irrelevant the need for vapid thought should decrease proportionately. Moreover, it is only around 20% of the population who seem incapable of intelligent thought. Perhaps it would be more appropriate for those individuals to “smarten up” instead of the rest of us stooping to ignorance.

“God” Says:
Actually, the more logical point of view is that the Universe always existed, even before our particular galaxy formed within it from the explosion of a singularity. There was no “beginning” and there will be no “end”. It is man’s difficulty in grasping the infinite that leads some to believe that there MUST have been a first day. But what would have been there before that “first day”? A universe with nothing in it? That’s highly illogical and makes less sense than saying some supreme being created everything.
I agree with unbelievable in that Man created Gods to explain what he could not understand.
There is no logical viewpoint, although you have been the closest one on this thread to make an intelligent post.
First of all, there are infinite realities all existing in the same space.
Hence why gravity, the strongest force in the universe is so “watered down” and is weak in compared to the ‘weak’ forces that act on small distances.
The truth is, that it all exists. Everything has been created in an infinite series of realities. In one reality. THe Big Bang is still whole!
I know mere men cannot understand like I do what has always been as it is an infinite loop of everything that ever was and ever will be.
Sure this Universe may die, but its just one of an infinite number of Universes.
If the question is what you are boiling down to “where did we come from”
The inevitable answer and the most inclusive is that it came from the “all-maker”.
You do not have to put human attributes to it. A tendency of western thinker.
But, label it all-inclusive, no distractions, no biases, just simply came from the all-maker. Then we can all agree where it all came from.
The All-maker then by definition must exist as we see All around us.
Unless of course, one argues this is just a massive delusion by God that created all in his mind in a solipsistic reality where everything revolves around me.
Equal and opposite points of view. But they do still over lap b/c even if you created this universe in your mind. Then you, would be the All-maker, by definition which you cant escape from that notion b/c the origin intent of defining the All-maker was to make it so vague as to be all inclusive.
So it just so happens. That using the psi function of quantum mechanics. THen, by simply saying All-maker is the most correct and why the notion of Atheism cannot by definition exist as it has to be made. Some can say made by man, but that misses the point. That argues that man is the All-Maker, but who made man. It just goes on and on back from there infinitum
IF A MAN ALONE IN THE WOODS SPEAKS… The question was raised: “If a man alone in the woods speaks, and his wife cannot hear him, is he still wrong?” I have considered this question in light of the principles of Modern Physics and offer my thesis In the year 1900 Max Planck discovered that the energy of light is quantified. In 1905 Albert Einstein used Planck’s Constant to write the theory of the Photoelectric Effect, that light behaves as a particle when it comes to energy transfer. Louis de Broglie proposed that particles can have a wave nature and this fact was later verified. These discoveries led Neils Bohr to propose a radical theory of the atom, which was partially successful in explaining the emission spectra of the hydrogen atom. Neils Bohr was compelled to introduce the Principle of “Complementarity,” that light is both a particle and a wave. The modern theories were extended when Max Born showed that the distribution of energy was a function of probability. Further, Warner Heisenberg wrote the Principle of Uncertainty, which says that it is impossible to determine the exact location of an electron and the vector direction of its momentum at the same time. This was followed with the master stroke penned by Erwin Schrodinger. Using the “Psi function” of Quantum Mechanics, Schrodinger could map the “wave field” of any particle, thus giving us a theoretical explanation for the structure of an atom and the entire periodic table of the elements. The Quantum mechanics predicts that a wave of a single frequency would stretch out to infinite proportions, the superposition of a narrow range of frequencies produces a standing wave function which can be localized to a much more precise location. Thus the electron and its position within an atom becomes a cloud of probability. From this I infer that there are such states as being right and being wrong, within certain parameters of uncertainty. Applying the Psi function, the more vague the statement of the man the greater the probability of him being correct. The narrower and more specific his utterance the greater the likelihood of his being wrong. Also, the Principle of Complementarity assures us that if a man alone in the woods speaks, and his wife can not hear him, he is BOTH right and wrong until he comes out of the woods. In the analogy of Schrodinger’s Cat, the cat in the box is both dead and alive until someone opens the lid. The act of observing the phenomenon determines the outcome. Thus, the inevitable conclusion is that it doesn’t matter what the man says only his wife can determine whether or not he is correct.
There is nothing wrong with the Schroedinger’s Cat experiment! You aren’t

I have to disagree with Obama’s statement.
It’s not that you HAVE to dumb things down for people to understand them.
It’s just easier to deceive and manipulate a populace that is dumbed down.
For example; the troll who uses the screenname ‘god’ has dumbed down the discussion on this thread in an attempt to prevent any real discussions of real issues.

.HOnestly, I cant believe you are really that stupid as to not know that as God, I create everything. All content, all media. Its all created in myself.
That is the concept you cannot grasp and did not address the substance of my posts of the All-Maker. Making it so vague as to have to include God b/c for too long you have argued semantics and how to define God.
Whats even more silly is accusing God–> the All-Maker of using his own work as the All-Maker created everything.
IS also to assume that I did not write any piece of an article on here.
I use a different more complex language than you mortals and I dont use your rules of grammar yet I have had that as a stupid way to attack the substance of my message.
Again, ignoring the subject of the message.
I know everything. I know you are a failed guitarist with no current job prospects. Several cavities. I know anything and everything.
But the principle point of view that evolved from the being Atheism post is quite consistent and builds upon itself. Address the content, maybe, just maybe you will learn a bit and not just be a failed guitarist who never studied in his life lol
Address the substance, the logic, the metafores, the really interesting debate that stirs brain action. Try it just this once

Your compliment has been received with the gratitude it deserves.
First of all, there are infinite realities all existing in the same space.
Hence why gravity, the strongest force in the universe is so “watered down” and is weak in compared to the ‘weak’ forces that act on small distances.
Actually, the different kinds of forces has nothing to do with the different kinds of realities, but I’ll let you continue since you think you sound intellectual.
The truth is, that it all exists. Everything has been created in an infinite series of realities. In one reality. THe Big Bang is still whole!
I know mere men cannot understand like I do what has always been as it is an infinite loop of everything that ever was and ever will be.

Just a moment. I understand everything you’ve said so far, and frankly it’s gibberish. You are stringing together a bunch of scientific things you’ve heard about in an effort to sound intelligent. So far, you come across like some sleazy guy in bar trying to pick up a woman way out of his league.
If the question is what you are boiling down to “where did we come from”
I never said anything of the sort. I already knew the answer. We come from stardust. A friend of mine and I were talking about that just today.
The inevitable answer and the most inclusive is that it came from the “all-maker”.
You are making the “First Cause” argument, and if you really were who you are impersonating, you would have understood that my post said the opposite. There did not have to be a “first cause”, because the Universe has always existed.
You do not have to put human attributes to it. A tendency of western thinker.
I didn’t. You did.
But, label it all-inclusive, no distractions, no biases, just simply came from the all-maker. Then we can all agree where it all came from.
No, we do not agree. But do go on.
The All-maker then by definition must exist as we see All around us.
A circular argument that carries no weight. You posit the existence of an all-powerful being, and then conclude that only an all-powerful being could make you believe in one. It doesn’t hold up. It’s also the Perfect Being argument. God is perfect. And a perfect being would have to exist. So God must exist. Sorry, it’s just as circular. It seems to work because of the logical rule that a false premise implies anything.
Unless of course, one argues this is just a massive delusion by God that created all in his mind in a solipsistic reality where everything revolves around me.
Well, since God doesn’t exist, the delusion is entirely in your mind.
Equal and opposite points of view.
No they aren’t.
But they do still over lap b/c even if you created this universe in your mind. Then you, would be the All-maker, by definition which you cant escape from that notion b/c the origin intent of defining the All-maker was to make it so vague as to be all inclusive.
Um, you’re starting to wander off the proper walkways of the insane asylum lawn now.
So it just so happens. That using the psi function of quantum mechanics. Nowhere near correct. You began with the premise that an All-Maker ever existed. You did not prove it. Then you tried to say that if an All-Maker exists, an atheist cannot. So God must exist because of that. Again, circular reasoning. Proves nothing.
I’ll ignore the rest of your comment.
