Sen. Webb Sides With Right-Wing Claims On Truth Commission And Gitmo

When President Obama announced on his second day in office that he would close the Guantanamo Bay prison within a year, Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) said on MSNBC that Obama had “given a reasonable timeline here.” He praised Obama for “helping us reassert ourselves around the world as a moral beacon, in terms of how people are being handled.”

However, on ABC’s “This Week” today, Webb reversed course and appeared to condemn the Obama administration for “creating artificial timelines” to close Guantanamo, where he said detainees should stay. He also objected to a truth commission on torture. On the most important national security issues, Webb sided with the right wing:

ON TRUTH COMMISSION

STEPHANOPOULOS: That’s the irony here , Senator Webb, as Speaker Gingrich says, investigate. He wants a separate House investigation. Speaker Pelosi says, fine, let’s have a truth commission, the one that Senator Kyl doesn’t want. Where do you stand on this?

WEBB: I just don’t think it’s that big a deal. [...]

STEPHANOPOULOS: So, no truth commission?

WEBB: I think this will resolve itself without something like that.

ON RELEASING NON-DANGEROUS UIGHURS

STEPHANOPOULOS: I know there are about 17, I believe, Chinese Uighurs, they are called, who have been ordered released by a federal court, they’ve determined not to be a threat to the United States. And the administration has been working on plans to bring them to Virginia. Can you accept them in your state?

WEBB: Well, let me back up for a minute. The answer is no. No.

ON CLOSING GUANTANAMO

WEBB: We spend hundreds of millions of dollars building an appropriate facility with all security precautions in Guantanamo to try these cases. … I do not believe they should be tried in the United States. … We should, at the right time, close Guantanamo. But I don’t think that it should be closed, and in terms of transferring people here.

Watch a compilation:

Webb said repeatedly that the Guantanamo detainees “deserve due process.” But at the same time, he refused to accept a court’s ruling that the Chinese Uighurs are not terrorists, pose no threat, and should be released.

And Webb’s opposition to allowing detainees their due process rights in Virginia courts is not shared by everyone: Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA) recently wrote about the “courage and patriotism” of Virginians who supported courts in their state in trying and convicting Zacarias Moussaoui, John Walker Lindh, and Beltway sniper John Allen Muhammad:

[S]hould President Obama determine that Alexandria needs to play a reasonably limited role in a nationwide effort to bring justice to the Guantanamo detainees and close this unfortunate chapter of American history, I am confident that Alexandrians will stand strong as they always have: gritting their teeth, stiffening their spines and carrying the load required so that the American values of justice and the rule of law are not overridden but, rather, respected and honored, as is our heritage as a great nation.

I think he was saying that the Pelosi issue is not a big deal.

    He’s right.

They are making it a big deal.

When all it does is expose the Bush Admin.

You know those Republicans are suicidal when they want to investigate someone for what they knew about Bush’s crimes.

    It’s unbelievable.

I have never been a Jim Webb fan the way a lot of people are. Other than his stand on veterans issues, he has proved to be pretty close to a Blue Dog in his beliefs and his votes.

Webb is way off base on this, but before we get too far along lets get our own house in order: apparently Center for American Progress’ Erica Williams doesn’t think this is a big deal either.

When president Bush said that they water boarded ONLY three high level detainees, did Pelosi protest then and claim that the CIA had lied to her concerning the use of waterboarding?

Webb thinks this to be a non-issue. However, consistency does count when someone makes a stand. I want to know what made Pelosi change her mind this last few months, because before now, she had no objections with the story lines brought forth from the White House and CIA.

I have a difficult time listening to members of Congress arguing that the American Justice system doesn’t work and how U.S. high security prisons aren’t that secure. WTF?!?!

Boner is on CNN now crawling back from his criticism of the CIA last year while he condemns Pelosi for doing the same.
He claims she needs proof of such claims, well, Boner, how about a truth commission?
She cannot produce documented proof of a meeting she attended where no notes are allowed and attendees are not allowed to speak of what was discussed — he knows that — therefore we need a commission with authority to help dig down to the bottom of this.
Republicans – to paraphrase Shakespeare – are protesting too much.

Newt Gingrich, who was having an extra-marital affair while pushing for impeachement of Bill Clinton over an extra-marital affair, is acting all noble over what Nancy Pelosi KNEW, all while fully ignoring what Bush and Cheney DID.

If that’s the “new image” of the Republican Party, then they really are just putting lipstick on the GOPig…

  13. Marie says:

The NIMBY argument regarding high level prisoners is false, misleading and fearmongering. We have always had high level, dangerous criminals incarcerated around the nation with no issue of their being any further danger to the public.

  14. Imadecidertoo says:

I wonder how much it costs to house a detainee. I bet more than $30,000 a year. My son and I will take one for $15,000. I have no fear of any of those prisoners. I will even keep him or her in my basement, let them eat Krispy Kremes, drink diet (I am not a savage) Mountain Dew and watch Cable. Dead in two years tops and no enhanced interrogations needed.

  15. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

The right wing is out in full force asking “What did Nancy Pelosi know and when did she know it?” What we don’t hear anyone in the MSM asking is “What did the Republican Members of Congress know and when did they know it?”

Pelosi says that she, herself, wasn’t there when the CIA said they waterboarded Zubaydah. I’m sure the staff member who attended that meeting in her place would have told her if they said that. But since she was just one Representative from the minority party, I find it highly doubtful that she was the only one briefed (especially if she couldn’t attend the meeting.) I find it highly likely that there was at least one Republican at that meeting. Why have we not heard from that/those Republican(s)? Why hasn’t any Republican come forward and said, “I was there when the CIA told us they waterboarded Zubaydah”?

Is it because it never really happened? Or is it because they would then be implicating themselves in the same charge of complicity that they are now leveling against Pelosi?

  16. Wannabekool says:

So who put the screws to Webb? (And others as well?)

I think they’re all guilty, except maybe not Russ Feingold.

  17. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

And therein lies the truth. Webb is a NIMBY.

What I find very hard to believe is that they are saying there were no transcripts of the briefing. If there were no transcripts, then how can they say positively that they told Pelosi that a prisoner was being waterboarded?

  19. Jackie says:

Webb used his Military knowledge and defense of our soldiers to get elected. Now he sounds like he got a call for Dick Cheney. Webb is now willing to deny detainees their right and continue torture? We heard a soldier kill his fellow soldiers is Webb so joined at the hip of Dick Cheney that he now will do what ever he’s told. Yes Webb started out fighting for the soldiers and the American people, but like Judas Webb got his 30 pieces of silver. Who can you trust?

She has asked that the transcripts be published, but the CIA is saying there are no transcripts of the briefing. If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

If I have the choice of believing Nancy Pelosi, who has nothing to lose by telling the truth or the CIA who has a lot to lose by telling the truth, I am going to believe Pelosi.

Unless the CIA is able to release transcripts of the briefing that would prove Pelosi was informed about the waterboarding, I will continue to believe her.

  26. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Don’t forget, Webb was originally a Republican. And not too many years ago he was acting like a Republican:

Webb endorsed incumbent Democrat Charles Robb for reelection to his Senate seat, over Webb’s former Naval Academy classmate and fellow Marine Oliver North, in 1994.[15] Webb subsequently endorsed Republican George Allen over Robb in 2000,[16] and then ran against Allen himself in 2006.

Because for Pelosi to object and say what she was told by the CIA she would have had to violate the law that precludes her from releasing classified information.

The reason why she is speaking up now is because the classified information has already been brought to light and is no longer relevant.

Nancy Pelosi, her staffer Michael Sheehy, Porter Goss, his staffer Tim Sample, briefers from the CounterTerrorism Center (CTC), and the Office of Congressional Affairs (OCA; elsewhere, we’ve been told four people, total, from CIA attended).

The CIA was supposed to tell the whole truth to the WHOLE ENTIRE HOUSE/SENATE INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEES, but they didn’t. This move was unlawful, so even though Porter Goss was there (was he the one who supplied the limos when the right wingers went to the Watergate Hotel and had prostitute male & female there? I think he may have been! He’s not innocent by any stretch of the imagination), it doesn’t matter. The CIA was in the middle of duping the Congress to help the Bush Regime.

  36. dixie blood says:

    #35 – KayInMaine,

This was not illegal. There is a gang of 8(?) that is briefed by the CIA and other intelligence sources that is not revealed to entire committees. She was a member of this group.

  37. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    Bilbo,
I never said that Pelosi would have to release classified documents. What I’m questioning is when BUSH revealed that indeed, waterboarding did happen, why didn’t she object, then, and argue that she was NOT briefed.

She could have gone before the public, THEN, and said, “To the contrary, Mr. President, we were NOT briefed on waterboarding.” She wouldn’t have to reveal any documents and in fact, having confronted the Bush, she would have made him produce evidence to counter HER!

Bilbo, when Bush admitted that indeed, they waterboarded THREE high level detainees, he then opened that can of worms. People began asking questions, about it’s legitimacy, it’s legality, and it’s authorization. That should have been Pelosi’s invitation to say, “Oh really? That’s not the story the CIA gave me. Maybe the president should provide the American people of his facts.”

From Emptywheel of FireDogLake (link to article provided at #39):

“This letter makes the President’s and Intelligence Community’s obligation pretty clear. They must “fully and currently” inform congressional intelligence committees. They must provide all information about such activities. Congress should not have to play “Twenty Questions” to get such information. Not providing such information is a violation of the law. And, “just as importantly,” it is “a direct affront” to Congress to withhold such information.”

From the evil wiki on the Gang of 8:

“The Gang of Eight is a common colloquial term for a set of eight leaders of the U.S. Congress. Specifically, the Gang of Eight includes the leaders of each of the two parties from each of the two houses of Congress and the chairs and ranking members of the intelligence committees of each of the two houses of Congress. They are all sworn to secrecy and there is no vote required. It is merly a notification to the gang of eight.

The President of the United States is required by 50 U.S.C. § 413(a)(1) to “ensure that the congressional intelligence committees are kept fully and currently informed of the intelligence activities of the United States.” However, under 50 U.S.C. § 413b(c)(2), the President may elect to report instead to the Gang of Eight when he feels “it is essential to limit access” to information about a covert action.”

And what Obama is saying with his refusal to release the photos is what he has been signaling for weeks now: I am not going to fight the liberals’ war — on Dick Cheney’s turf.

The rewards are nonexistent, and the risks too great. Barack Obama is not taking on CENTCOM or West Point for a bunch of congressional progressives.

    spring heeled jack,
We learned decades ago how the Nazi’s were capable of running camps and keeping their captives in line. Albeit, their tactics were far more disgusting and brutal, the idea and concept is the same… SHOCK the others into compliance. If others can see what you are capable of doing to their friends, and you have the gun, how is it not possible that they fear it happening to them, too?

I the Nazi prison camps, before the ovens were ramped up, a bullet to the head of an inmate that was “out of line” in front of the entire camp, sent a clear implied message, “Do like he did, and this too, will be your fate”.

The goon squad at Gitmo was no different.

Grow a brain. Learn to read. Read my post and you will see there is NO “NANCY” mentioned you phucking idiot!!

Wow. Only a troll who’s a phucking idiot would say something like this complete with lots of exclamation points as if to puff herself out to be something she’s not.

I asked what your intention was and only mentioned Nancy because it appeared you were trying to change the subject in making this a “blame Nancy please” moment. Twice in the same paragraph I asked:

“I’m sorry, but what is your point about Nancy and the ‘Gang of 8′?” Torture was approved by Nancy and Nancy only and the other 3 or 7 are free to go? “Not sure of your intention at the moment.”

When you mentioned the Gang of 8 and said Nancy was in it, the only conclusion I could make is that you were talking about Nancy because she was in the Gang of 8! She was also in the Gang of 4 too. Scary.

As I stated later, it doesn’t matter how many people were in the gang, because they were all lied to and deceived by the CIA and the Bush Regime.

I can tell the only thing to calm you down is to give you some credit. GREAT COPY & PASTES! VERY VALUABLE INFORMATION! AND YOU WEREN’T EVEN TORTURED TO DO IT! LOL

The right wing is out in full force asking “What did Nancy Pelosi know and when did she know it?” What we don’t hear anyone in the MSM asking is “What did the Republican Members of Congress know and when did they know it?”

That’s a good question if those Repbulicans are now calling for investigations and/or punishment of those involved, after having taken no action earlier like Pelosi.

Once again UL shows how easy it is to lead the sheeple to think what they are told to think. Yeah the big question isnt why was the Bush administration lying and torturing the real question is what Democrat can we blame this on. Not a dozen functioning braincells between all of them.

Hey, deb, how’s going? The idea of punishing those who failed to try to stop illegal activity, as well as punishing the perpetrators, is beyond you isn’t it bud? ;)

I really feel for Dr. Gov. Dean. Webb must of had his spine (and brain) removed like Reid and so many other Dems.Invasion of the Pod people? We report…you decide.

OOps! I forgot to mention Gov. Tim Kaine. Another spineless non-spokesperson for the Dems.

No critical thinking IS beyond you though isnt it bud? First she was in the minority and those briefings were CLASSIFIED. What exactly COULD she do? Try to make a law that would never get out of comittee? Complain to WHOM? As of yet exactly what she DID know is in dispute. He said she said is not proof of anything also. Can you be indicted because you didnt try to save a drowning man? In fact you CANNOT. So while the CONCEPT isnt beyond me as of YET it also isnt LAW. Am I going to fast for you here? I know you arent that bright. It is so precious to see your constant condescension coupled with your abject stupidity.

That would be why she needs to be included in those being investigated, bud. See how that works? That’s kind of the purpose of investigating; to see if punishment is warranted. In addition to what did she know and when did she know it, now her accusation that the CIA lied to Congress needs to be investigated. Either the CIA or Pelosi needs to be held accountable depending upon the veracity of the statement.
As for what she could have done, I would expect any U.S. Representative with such knowledge to at least have written letters of protest to every person in the Adminisration with involvement in the policies. Additionally, that “impeachment is off the table” thing takes on a whole new meaning if she was aware of the illegal actions all along. At least it does if one is more concerned with justice than partisanship. ;)
