Boehner Refuses To Go Along With Fox’s Call To Unseat Pelosi: ‘Let’s Not Get Too Far Down The Road Here’
Last week, former Republican House speaker Newt Gingrich launched a campaign to investigate House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) over what she knew about the Bush administration’s torture program. “I think she has lied to the House, and I think that the House has an absolute obligation to open an inquiry, and I hope there will be a resolution to investigate her,” Gingrich told ABC News. Other Republicans have heeded Gingrich’s call and agreed that Pelosi should be investigated and possibly stripped of her Speakership:
“It is outrageous, and the American people need to speak to their Democrat members of Congress and ask them to come up with a new speaker.” [Rep. Steve King (R-IA), 5/15/09]
“And if indeed Nancy Pelosi has lied, which it seems to me that she has, then — then she either needs to resign or at the very least have a public and open apology to the CIA.” [Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), 5/18/09, Fox and Friends]
CHETRY: Yes. But if it comes — she either, you know, is forced to step down or she isn’t. What’s your opinion?
HOEKSTRA: Well, I think she’s been the one that has been saying people within the Justice Department need to be held accountable, people in the CIA need to be held accountable. If she wants to apply that same standard, it has to be applied to her as well.” [Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI), 5/18/09, CNN]
Fox News has also been aggressively pushing for Pelosi’s resignation. This morning, Fox and Friends host Brian Kilmeade tried to get House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) to agree. Boehner, however, shied away:
BOEHNER: I think the ball is in the speaker’s court. I think she needs to come forward, either present evidence or do an apology, and let’s get this behind us. [...]
KILMEADE: If she has none, she should remain Speaker?
BOEHNER: Let’s not — let’s not get too far down the road here. I’m not going to take anything off the table, but I do believe that — that the ball is in her court. And she has to either put up or have an apology and move on.

Over the weekend on ABC’s This Week, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) similarly rejected Gingrich’s call for a full-blown investigation, saying, “I am less interested in investigating whether her memory or correct or she lied about it than I am in the policies that flow from the debate that we’re having. I am not one who thinks we ought to have truth commissions and all of the rest of it and keep looking backward.”
As Pelosi has made clear, questions about her level of knowledge make a truth commission more — not less — necessary. “Until a truth commission comes into being, I encourage the appropriate committees of the House to conduct vigorous oversight of these issues,” Pelosi said. If conservatives were genuine in their outrage, they would be embracing Pelosi’s calls for a full investigation instead of trying to distract from the real issue of the Bush administration’s torture program.

I would love to see an investigation into this whole stinking mess get underway. First of course, is the issue of torture and the FACT that it is a violation of our own Constitution and the treaties which we signed (which as per the Constitution are mandated to be honored in the same way). Thus, anyone who knew this was occurring should have come forward whether or not it was so-called “Classified.” Their vow to support and defend the U.S. Constitution trumps ANY classified information IF it violates that Constitution. Secondly, there were Republicans who were also briefed on these methods, and not just in 2002. Thirdly, the whole briefing of only 4 members of the Senate and House Intelligence Committees completely abrogated the law about such disclosures. Even the briefing of the “Gang of 8″ (Majority/Minority leaders of both houses as well as Majority/Minority leaders of the Intelligence Committees in each house) is supposed to be resorted to under extremely limited conditions. The conditions were not met…and certainly for any “Gang of Four” which isn’t even IN the law about disclosures to the Congress.
Now as far as Pelosi is concerned, I personally believe very little of anything she says. I do think this is one of the issues she was probably blackmailed with back in 2006 that led her to announce that “impeachment is off the table.” It would be ironic if the current political pressure about this leads to her replacement as Speaker with (hopefully) someone who isn’t tainted by this situation, since there are many of us that have wanted her replaced for several years now.
But this entire situation points not only to a so-called “Truth Commission” which I would support only if it had completely non-political and non-partisan people on it, but even more important…an independent prosecutor to investigate the entire mess and let the chips fall where they may.

First, they want to keep on bashing her because she isn’t very popular anyway. They wouldn’t dare go after the President like this because he’s too popular.
Second, Nancy Pelosi is the person who took impeachment “off the table” and that sticks to her, even if she is calling for investigations now. If Pelosi goes, then the majority can put in someone who has none of her appeasement baggage, and the investigation juggernaut would pick up some serious momentum.

1) How do you know she didn’t register objections? The briefings were classified and according to the CIA they didn’t take transcripts (yeah right). If everything is classified, you have no idea what Nancy Pelosi did regarding objecting or not objecting.
2) For you to say she should have filed objections against torture, you will have to buy into their talking point that Pelosi was briefed that detainees were being tortured. There is no proof of that.
Why is it that you are so adamant that you know what happened when there is no proof? I get it that you don’t like Pelosi but I don’t get it why you are willing to believe the CIA (who has been caught in numerous lies) and you don’t believe Pelosi.

I find it laughable that anyone in Congress would blow the whistle on the CIA and something would have been done, at that time. We hadn’t invaded Iraq yet, Bush was still a hero. The press would certainly not have been behind them—they were speculating on whether or not it was a punishable offense to criticize the president. The Patriot Act coupled with “with us or against us” created a terrifying climate for dissent. She would have gotten nowhere with Congress.
That being said, she should want to do everything in her power to keep such a thing from happening again.

May 18th, 2009 at 9:08 pmI think people are forgetting one important fact here…if memory serves, wasn’t Boehner supposedly part of the faction within the Republican Party back in 1997 which threatened to force then-Speaker Gingrich out if he didn’t resign, most likely at least partly because Gingrich admitted to having provided inaccurate and/or misleading information during a House Ethics investigation examining whether Gingrich had violated tax laws?
I for one find it extremely odd indeed that Boehner would shilly-shally like this on the issue of Pelosi stepping down as Speaker when he supposedly participated in an attempted coup against a former Speaker — and a member of his own party yet! Then again, maybe he knows what side his bread is buttered on. Maybe he’s afraid that someone in the media will rehash that — if they did, it probably wouldn’t do his reputation any favors right now with other neoconservative Republicans and/or with those voters who continue to support them, because it would be a reminder that he turned his back on one of their own.

May 20th, 2009 at 3:36 pmPlease let me explain a few things here — The Obama administration released memos that detailed the enhanced interrogations techniques used against our ENIMIES. What Mr. Obama said by doing so is that the required “need to know” for classified disclosure doesn’t matter and that the classification itself doesn’t matter either. i.e. It’s okay to tell the American public and the world public what tactics we used and will use…excuse the F__K out of me, but does this president not understand the most basic of protocol when it comes to classified information. The exposure of the “memos” was a HUGE mistake on Obama’s part and that mistake has NOTHING to do with the BUSH ADMINSTRATION! OBAMA SCREWED UP HERE!!!!
And as far as Pelosi’s involvement goes here, her lack of objection constitutes co-conspiratorship…i.e. she is just as responsibile as the republican administration. They don’t call it an oversight committee because you can’t do anyting…Pelosi is full of crap. Pelosi fell down on the job ( as far as here stated viewpoints are concerned). She was informed and failed to object in any way, shape, or form. The real truth is more likely that she had no objection at the time to the tactics being used. Why, because crazy people were trying to kill Americans. Get real people…wake the he11 up!!!
Consider this, Diane Feinstein is in charge of the investigation into the issue detailed above in the Senate…Feinstein is a fellow Californian who shuffled $25 billion to her husband’s failing company…she claims she didn’t know about the contract. If so, she is completely incompetent. If she did know about the contract, she is a fellon. Why is she in charge of anything? Why is she still in office?
My point here is, who do the Dems and Obama think they are fooling…not this guy!
