Montana town requests that U.S. government send 100 Gitmo detainees to its prison.

A frequent attack on the closure of Guantanamo is the claim that no one in the U.S. wants detainees housed in their backyard. Last Sunday, Dick Cheney remarked, “I don’t know a single congressional district in this country that is going to say, gee, great, they’re sending us 20 Al Qaida terrorists.” But Al Jazeera’s Rob Reynolds reports that the town of Hardin, MT requesting that 100 detainees be sent to its empty prison:

hardin1Earlier this month, Hardin’s town council voted unanimously to offer the US government a deal: Send Hardin the detainees that most foreign countries and other cities the US are afraid to take.

“Why not us?” [Greg Smith, Hardin's economic development director] asks. “They’ve got to go somewhere.” He dismisses security concerns over housing inmates former Bush administration officials famously described as “the worst of the worst”. “We have some very hardened criminals in our own country that have committed some heinous crimes, and they are in communities all across this country,” Smith argues. [...]

He estimates at least 100 new jobs would come from filling the prison, a real boost to this small, beleaguered community. Smith describes the town’s quest to become a new penal colony as “a piece of the American dream.” “Like anything in America, we’re looking for opportunities,” he says.

Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA) has said that detainees could be tried in his Alexandria, VA district. Last month, Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) asked Attorney General Holder, “Do you know of any community in the US that would welcome terrorists, would be terrorists, former terrorists incarcerated in Guantanamo?”

Please show us Cheney’s face when he reads about this offer from Montana. You know, the same Cheney who’s trying to scare the crap out of ordinary citizens, telling them to shutter the windows and nail the doors closed if those folks ever set foot on-shore.

Way to go Montana! Who says the American belief in making opportunity work for you, and it’s belief in capitalism and turning lemons into lemonade ain’t still alive and kickin’.

That’s a fabulous idea. Let some of the detainees go there. Opening the prison would create jobs and inject cash into the local economy. Alot of good can happen when folks stop being paranoid.

  11. spencers mom says:

And why not? A well run prison is a well run prison regardless of where it’s located.

San Quentin sits on a site in Marin County, CA that would be worth millions (billions?) to a developer and houses some of the worst of the worst.

First Iowa legalizes gay marriage and now Montana is willing to take nearly half of the remaining Gitmo detainees. They’re closing in on you, Cheney! Time to dust off the duct tape and plastic sheeting scare campaign again!

I dunno, Richard… perhaps you’re unaware that we’ve been holding convicted terrorists in US prisons for years, including Omar Abdel-Rahman, Wadih el-Hage, Zacarias Moussaoui, Ramzi Yousef, and Mahmud Abouhalima at a Federal “supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, USA. It is unofficially known as ADX Florence, Florence ADMAX, Supermax, or The Alcatraz of the Rockies.”

  45. backup says:

    Devil’s advocate.

This sounds good. But, if they come to the U.S. and are tried and acquitted due to a lack of evidence, are the people of Hardin okay with the acquitted being freed on their streets? And what guarantee do other communities have that those released won’t migrate outside Hardin; to other cities?

Acquitting someone for a lack of evidence does not prove they aren’t what they are accused of being. It only indicates there is a lack of evidence.

The detainees deserve a trial. They should not be held indefinitely without one. While Hardin’s solution initially seems appealing, there would still be open questions.

While maintaining Gitmo has negative stigma for the U.S., the detainees are secure there, they are under the control of the military commanded by President Obama.

Why not work to give them a speedy trial while they are at Gitmo and then determine where they should go after they have been tried? (whether they are to be released or remain incarcerated).

  46. kdgamergirl says:

Well, guy who speaks against the nominee for Pope, that is rather silly. I think you have been getting your arguments from ill-informed sources. If they are American citizens, and they are tried, and they are acquitted, they will be released into American communities. I do not believe there are many of those. If they are foreign-born, and they are tried, and they are acquitted, they will be deported to their home countries, but remain in custody until then. No matter what you have heard, they will not be released into American communities. The people you hear saying that are badly misinformed, at the least, and totally freakin’ lying, at the worst.

  57. EnnuiDivine says:

I wouldn’t call Montana “progressive”…but they’re definitely pragmatic. Prisons are a great source of revenue for sparsely populated/economically depressed areas. More power to the Mayor of Hardin.

    Just to stir up debate:

What happens when the trial against Khalid Mohammed et.al. reopens? We must balance the need for a fair and just trial against the possibility that any possible evidence/confessions gained during the 183 waterboarding sessions could be thrown out. Granted, there’s likely a wealth of other evidence against a psychopath like Mohammed that could be unearthed, but where would Mohammed et.al. be sent if a mistrial is declared?

It’s not like Steve King’s “al-Qaeda on welfare” scenario is going to happen, but we can’t keep them in permanent extra-judicial detention, we sure as hell can’t deport them back to their homelands, and there isn’t a country on earth that’d willingly let them live free.

Like I said, just want to stir up some intelligent debate.

And I’m proud to report that Fannie Mae has heard the call and, as I understand, it’s about $440 billion over a period of time. They’ve used their influence to create that much capital available for the type of home buyer we’re talking about here. It’s in their charter; it now needs to be implemented. Yep. Exactly right. Our prisons house some of the most vile despicable people on earth, so it makes sense that the prisoners at GITMO could be housed here with them. Just a little embarrassing for the truth to come out! Republicans have very fragile egos and they think they’ve been correct on everything since the beginning of time.

Hmmmm… sounds like very “trollish” behavior. Very conservative behavior, actually. Fear for political purposes.

Therefore, one must conclude that trolls are internet terrorists, and should be incarcerated indefinetely as confirmed enemy combatants.

Accusation = guilt, and therefore requires suspension of all basic human rights, for a terrorist is less than a human and deserves no human rights, as they are not fully human.

I accuse (without compensation or reservation) all trolls of being terrorists, and consequently they are all immediately guilty with no right to appeal said decision (for the right to appeal is a right, and accused terrorists deserve no rights whatsoever).

To facilitate this measure ISPs of all trolls will be made public knowledge to assist in their capture, for the sake of national security.

I dont remember attacking you or arguing with your point. Rassumussen got 08 right. Other than that they are usually the outlier poll. Almost ALWAYS to the right and of COURSE the WSJ likes them. Overall Zobgy does a better job has a better historical record and Gallup is better. I am pretty sure they can take a decent poll of a fairly small town. I dont think this article really makes a relevant point either. What the people OR the town counsel of this town think isnt really relevant to the core issue here. That is that we shouldnt just lock people up on the basis only of accusations for the rest of their lives if we are punishing someone with years of incarceration civilization and common decency demands we SHOW they have actually done something wrong. I see NO reason if they couldnt escape what amounts to a POW camp that a supermax prison wouldnt hold them with ease. So I see no problem with incarcerating them IN a prison until they get a fair trial. Anyway congratulations on at least making an argument instead of trolling insults to liberals. Even when I disagree with you I respect this kind of attempt at discourse

I agree. When I was in high school the California prison system had a occupational program where when they got out those who took the program basically apprenticed to be Iron workers. It was a hard job but it paid pretty well and their recidivism rate was much lower than average. The GOP Governor went on a jihad against the program saying we shouldnt reward them and got it killed. Once they pay their debt to society they SHOULD be given a chance at being productive members of that society. If we take all chances for them to lead a productive life to support themselves and a family then how do we expect them NOT to go back to breaking into MY home to steal my TV and stereo or sell drugs again. Practicality itself argues for rehabilitation instead of just writing them off and making it virtually impossible for them to get good jobs.

1* How closely have you followed recent news stories about the closing of the Guantanamo prison camp?

    37% Very closely

I found these two numbers interesting.

A Question please…..Wasen’t there an article about cheney having a huge company that serviced and supplied many prisons?..I seem to remember something about him being involved in a big no bid contract and huge profit’s while providing inferior service a few months ago…Anyone remember that.?…Blessing and thanks in advance for the info..

CFP idk why you addressed that to Eugene as it was me who poked holes in the study. Eugene is absolutely correct in his assesment. Again, show me the demographics of the surveyed population, a margin of error and the confidence interval.

He estimates at least 100 new jobs would come from filling the prison, a real boost to this small, beleaguered community.

cant be, the government does not create jobs. lmao.

EugeneDebs, SlappyMoron can’t bite you – it has no teeth. This happens in 3rd world countries where they have no fluoride in the water. So sad for Slappy :( Maybe it can gum you :P
