I don’t recall stating that there are not exceptions. There are certainly plenty of cases in which individual Native Americans, as well as entire tribes, get royally fucked by the U.S. government. Peltier is one of them. I’m well aware of that.

Multiply his case by 8,400 and you’ll have the number of Palestinian political prisoners being held unjustly by Israel.

BOY DID YOU MISS THE POINT. Palestinians were the Eursopeans in the equation. While Israelites had inhabited this land at one point the land was subsequently settled by others. Then we decided to take the land away from the Americans and give it back to the Native some of whom had never even lived on the continent. Get it?

The treatment of Native Americans by the United States for most of the past 300 years has been nothing short of horrific, so do not infer from my comment that I am in any way downplaying their hardships and suffering.

However. There are some key differences that render your analogy ludicrous.

Native Americans, on reservations and integrated into U.S. territory, have full rights as citizens of the United States.

Native Americans have the right of representation in Congress and the executive branch of the U.S. government, as well as state governments.

Native Americans are not multi-generational refugees in the U.S. and neighboring countries.

Native Americans have full control of their reserved land, and have full access to legal channels with which to protect their claims from settlement-building or resource grabs on their land.

Native Americans are not subject to military checkpoints and roadblocks between their towns and villages.

Native Americans do not have to wait for hours to travel between reservations and U.S. cities.

Native Americans do not have to deal with a concrete apartheid wall that snakes through their reservations and cuts them off from their land and villages and schools and hospitals.

Native Americans are not subject to collective punishment via white phosphorous and unmanned drone strikes.

Native Americans are not subject to indefinite imprisonment and torture for their political views.

But, yeah, other than that, you’ve got a point.

Why should Israel give anything back? The arabs shouldn’t have attacked them to begin with if they didn’t want to lose land. And if the arabs feel so badly for the poor, poor Palestinians, wouldn’t you think one of their much larger countries would offer them a homeland?

The Palestinians have a homeland already; it’s just that someone else is currently squatting in it.

Your parallel to Native Americans is an interesting question, and you can certainly make a case that they deserve reparations for being dispossessed. You do know that there are living Palestinians who were thrown off their land in 1948? That it’s not a question of something that happened a few hundred years ago, but actually happened in their lifetimes?

By what right did the Israelis stake claim to the better part of an entire nation — and remember this is prior to any “attack” by Arab nations.

I agree that I oversimplified the whole situation (it has been 60 years in the making). That post was my starting point.

I think this whole issue comes down to one thing: When religion is involved, this is what you get – war.

I do sometimes have to look at Israel in a simplified way: When you have two kids arguing about one toy, what does the parent do? The parent takes the toy away from both kids – problem solved. Let them cry about it or put them down for a nap.

Most of the arab countries in the M.E. would be glad to put you to death for the viewpoints you hold, including allowing women to show their elbows in public, religious viewpoints other than their own, rights for gays, and anything else outside their sharia law. I don’t shed any tears for them.
