Recently, conservatives who oppose torture investigations have been desperately trying to stifle discussion of Bush administration officials who authorized torture. Last week, for example, Karl Rove said that a public debate about torture serves as a “recruiting tool” for terrorists. Today, Fox News contributor Dana Perino joined in on the fearmongering, saying that recent congressional debates about torture are producing a “field day” for terrorists:
PERINO: Everyday there’s another step in this story. … Everyday the House of Representatives is having to deal with this issue. But it’s not just the House. They’ve drug everybody into this. But my concern is we’re not giving due interests as to what the terrorists are taking from this. We need to think about the international audience here. I’m sure the terrorists are having a field day.

No doubt the terrorists may exhibit some jubilation over confirmation of something they knew was going on all along.
Will they get any new converts from it? Probably not all that many, since they’ve already been recruiting using the “America tortures” selling point, and pretty much the entire Middle East believed we did. So even if Al Qaeda has a “field day”, it won’t mean much.
What IS different is that the world (which includes terrorists and potential terrorist recruits) is seeing that we are having a dialog about torture, and most of America condemns it. This is how a free and democratic society works. Now we need to ramp this up to the next level — to show the world that what we condemn carries consequences for its advocates and practitioners. If we don’t hold torturers and torture enablers accountable for their actions, any transparency doesn’t really mean much.
Oh, and Perino is still a bubblehead. Some things never change.

Since the discussion is about the effectiveness of torture instead of prosecution of the crime of torture, then yes it helps the enemy.

What Americans think is immaterial – This should be dealt with on an international stage and the American government should cooperate in all possible ways. It doesn’t matter who is found guilty and who is found innocent, it only matters that the proper steps are taken to bring all information to light and those who committed crimes are punished for them. It shouldn’t matter what country, what party or what job they are/were in, they should be punished! Even President Obama if he is keeping information form those who need it to proper pursue these charges.

Bush/Cheney squandered trillions of borrowed dollars in their pursuit of war profits for corporate friends, ignored a collapsing domestic economy, killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis, gleefully tortured more innocents to back-up their Iraqi war effort AND suspended Constitutional guarentees of both Habias Corpus and individual privacy while lying to the American populace and Congress the whole time. 1) If we torture prisoners (proven by admission or pictures), then we aid in recruiting terrorists, because they have something more to hate us for.
