Steele threatens to quit the RNC if he’s pushed to become a ‘figurehead chairman.’

Today at 1:00 p.m. ET, RNC chairman Michael Steele will be giving a major speech meant, in part, to reassure Republicans that he has control over the party. He is facing internal challenges from RNC members, including “a new set of checks and balances” on his power to “dole out money.” Today in an interview with Fox News, Steele suggested that if too much of his power is taken away, he may resign:

They can contemplate all they want to, but the reality is if they want a figurehead chairman you can have a figurehead chairman, but it won’t be Michael Steele.

Watch it:

Recall that just a few months ago, when asked whether he may resign, Steele replied, “Aww, trust me. Not me Baby! Nuh-uh. Not happening. No way, no how!”

Oh, please don’t go, Mike, please! You’re the best thing to come along since, well, Palin and NotJoeTheNot!

And we love your slogan for the GNOP:

    PEACE

Uh, doesn’t he know that that’s the only reason he was picked to head the RNC.

Isn’t rush already the figurehead chairman ?
I figure his head will soon be engulfed by his ballooning body rendering him totally useless even for the gop.

  5. The Republic of Hymenoptera Stupidity says:

But he’ll gladly remain on as long as he can be Rush’s finger puppet.

Boy, I’ll bet that finger is **C-O-L-D** some mornings, huh, Michael??

  9. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

I think that is what the RNC is aiming for. They don’t want to be embarrassed by firing Steele, so they are trying to push him to resign.

Brings to mind a Carole King song that seems appropriate…

Perhaps Steele will switch parties, too.

Steele doesn’t even trust his own party. Poor sap.

  16. misscoleopteramolly says:

It would be a pity if he left, since he is SOOOOOOO good for the Democrats.

But then I realized this is just empty talk. He’s already become a figurehead chairman — in fact, that’s pretty much what he was elected to be. Window dressing. The “we’ve got a black guy, too” response to Barack Obama.

We’ve seen his evolution from a guy who was willing to state the obvious, to a guy who settled for not going along with some of the loonier ravings of the right, to a guy who now spews talking points on “auto-parrot”.

He’s settled in to the figurehead position. If he was really going to leave the RNC for that reason, he’d be out already.

  17. Uncle Ho says:

Who will be the next figurehead RNC chairman?
    Trannie Coulter? Brillo? Beck? Bachman?

Steele is totally clueless. The RNC is not the center of gravity for his failing party. It doesn’t matter if he is a figure-head or not.

All the action is over at the Irrelevance in Broadcasting Network in the formerly-nicotine-stained hands of Boss Hawg Limpballs.

  27. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

Michael Steele is no figurehead. Figure-a**, yes, but not a figurehead. Was he the only one who didn’t realize this would be his position once elected as chair? Go figure.

  28. ranus69 says:

Did Steele really think he had “power” within the RNC, LOL? Steele better get ready for his “lynching” there coming after you boy.

I disagree; He might resign, but FOX “News” always picks up the castoff and/or criminal Republicans.

  30. Hope says:

You think he will run with the race card?

With Steele on the helm and the GOP pundits advocating for proof that the CIA misled Pelosi, I’m in 7th heaven.

Nope. I nominate Mr. Bill, as in “Ohhhh Noooo, Mister Bill!”=–he’s perfectly pliable, just like an RNC Chairman should be.

  34. glogrrl says:

Uh, doesn’t he know that that’s the only reason he was picked to head the RNC.

    Uh, token Negro, perhaps?

  37. stateofthedivision says:

Should Steele resign, I’m not sure Rep. Mike Conaway’s reputation can take another hit. His staffer Jeff Burton came up with the Steele nomination idea.

  38. CageyCretin says:

Uncle Ho Says: Should we start a pool?

well… can we stock it with electric eel, stingray, pirhanna, and jellyfish? Waterboard the republic fascist hopefuls first to get their lungs all lubricated (it’s not torture — just a hazing prank, you know), and then throw them in. First to manage 4 laps wins.

    Yeah, baby. You betcha. Also.

  39. Game of Life says:

    OMG!

I’m listening to him now on MSNBC and he’s is just freakin crazy.

  40. hormiga brava chavez says:

One of the best things that could happen to the Rebumblers . . . now if only Dick, Rush and Carl would leave, they’d have a chance to get out of their pit.

  44. wolfsinger says:

As the RNC shows Michael Steele that, Yes Sir Mr. Limbaugh Overlord Sir. The RNC is a Whites Only club of no new ideas striving for a better day in 1921.

Mr. Steele goes searching for acceptance and an expense account and finds it with Ron Paul and Bob Barr and together they split what remains of the Republican party. Alas, only to find that a rotten party split might be in more places but is half as strong and twice as fowl.

Look for the postmortem documentary on HBO

  45. Game of Life says:

He’s blaming all chimpy mess on President Obama.

“Change will begin in a teabag and it’s a wonderful thing.”

    PITIFUL.

  47. Game of Life says:

He is talking about more dirty tricks.

    and LIESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

They aren’t changing. he said words are useless, it’s the actions that matter. Ain’t that the truth with the teabagging repugs.

he said, “can delivery a victory” yeah like you did in NY.

  48. kdgamergirl says:

but but but Mikey! You’re the gift that keeps on giving! Don’t quit on us now :)

Michael Steele: “The era of apologizing for Republican mistakes of the past is officially over.”

This one statement is going to haunt the Republicans for a long time!

  51. Game of Life says:

It strange how comfortable he is around racist.

  52. Hoodathunktick says:

Michael Steele: “The era of apologizing for Republican mistakes of the past is officially over.”

Sorry, I missed the part when it began.

  53. J. Fred Smug says:

Oh, Steele’s THREATENING to quit, is he? Guess he never got the memo spelling out how he serves at the pleasure of Republic-Fascist (formerly GOP) Party Boss Limbaugh and his cabal.

  54. wtracy says:

For God sakes . . don’t go ! You are the best thing that could have every happened to the Republican AND the Democratic parties ! Keep up the good work . . . we wouldn’t have such a clear benchmark for totally incompetent without you, dear Michael.

  55. Shellly says:

Mike, you are already the figure head… the moment they took away your petty cash drawer key, you became an empty suite!

    ================================

and that is exactly why he has lost everyone’s respect. He thinks that the signs at the tea parties were aimed only at president obama. He didn’t see it aimed at any black person period. he thinks he’s exempt from it.. he laughs when callers refer to obama as the magic negro… he’s an idiot. they can have him.

  58. har5125 says:

Don’t quit Michael. The Demo… I mean the Republicans need you!

  59. cd says:

I hate to say it but I think Steele is just starting to realize that he’s little more tha the GOP’s tokin black friend.
