Steele: ‘Change…is being delivered in a tea bag. And that’s a wonderful thing.’

In a speech in Maryland today, RNC Chairman Michael Steele boasted about the renewed “energy” of the conservative movement. “The energy of our base,” he said, “is strong, it is real, and it is hungry for success.” “You can feel” this grassroots energy, Steele said, proudly touting the lobbyist-organized tea bag movement:

STEELE: Those of you who live outside of Washington know what I’m talking about. Those of you who actually attend Lincoln Day dinners and county party events. Those of you who toll in the vineyards, spending time in communities in diners, barbershops, and coffee shops, where real, everyday, hardworking Americans can be found. You know it’s real. You can see it, and you can feel it. This change, my friends, is being delivered in a tea bag. And that’s a wonderful thing.

The tea bag line was immediately greeted by loud applause. Watch it:

Update Directly after the speech, MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell asked former Republican Rep. Chris Shays what "new ideas" Steele had proposed. "I didn't hear any new ideas. But that's the point -- I mean, we need to be talking about ideas." Watch it:

This “speech” was filled with lies and talking points. It’s easy to speak in front of a bunch of bobble heads too.

    Get on talking Steele!

  2. chiroptera toasterhead says:

But will this change bring riches to the American people? Perhaps in the form of a pearl necklace?

  3. StratRat says:

I think we are watching the implosion of the GOP. Tea bagging? Again with the tea bags? I wonder if the GOP ever put numbers in their budget? What a flock of nutjobs.

Change in a tea bag? Oh, he’s saying America, the only change you get is if you dunk yourself repeatedly in hot water and then let yourself be tossed out while somebody enjoys the fruits of your labor?

Or is this some strange allusion to water boarding and Americans should get used to the idea?

    Dear Mr. Conservative,

Last week, you told me that 7,500 American soldiers died in combat during the Clinton years. You’re a liar. Clinton did the flyovers in Iraq and joined the U.N. peacekeeping action in Serbia but not one American soldier was lost in combat.

Can you prove that you’re not a liar? I’m still waiting for a reply.

  16. RantingTommy says:

Most people won’t notice the teabaggers as the patriotic among us will be busy on July 4 celebrating America.

Only the bitter little right wing cowards will be crying in their tea.

  25. RantingTommy says:

right wingers think they can develop a movement of people that just got tax cuts and are willing to go out and protest a minute increase on the richest people’s taxes

only morons will protest their own tax cut in order to complain about the tax burden being made a bit more fair

which is why you see so many morons at these Fox “news” corporate teabag rallies

  26. Megaloptera McWars says:

The teabaggers may actually be deliberately ignoring their own pay stubs so as to prevent any interference (you know, with facts) with the standard-issue talking points that fear-monger the “democrat party.”

The republican party is no longer a major party, it is a bizarre sociological experiment.

  27. tigger says:

    Change in a teabag?

Steele + renewed “energy” of the conservative movement = Program with empty promises.

If you are looking for Mike ‘in the housz’ Steele to give fresh new ideas to the GOP party, then you will be waiting for the cows to come home. But then again ‘dat’s how he rolls.’

Can you prove that you’re not a liar? I’m still waiting for a reply.

Actually, he claimed that 7500 servicemen had died on Clinton’s watch. But of course none were COMBAT deaths.

  31. barfly says:

The republican party is no longer a major party, it is a bizarre sociological experiment.

Like I said on a previous thread, they’re The Gong Show without a gong. One performance after another, all crazier than the last.

  32. Megaloptera McWars says:

The tax cuts for the rich expire at the end of 2010. It’s a congressional contract with a segment of income earners and the congress declines to renew it in the country’s best interest, that’s all. You’ll simply return to the Clinton years.

And that’s President Obama being nice, because if it were any other dem, these country-wreckers would be paying Nixon-Ford era tax rates. The war titans, the banks and other honchos, they have created the largest tax obligation in U.S. history right down to burdening the individual — including burgeoning health care costs.

  33. Buckie Boy says:

As I am sure someone else has noted, the right side did no moaning and groaning when Bushco blew the deficit straight to the stratosphere – he even did off budget so as to look good on paper.

BTW: I don’t mind paying my share of taxes. We have huge infrastructure and educational needs which require funding to solve. Does the right side think we can operate a huge country with over 300 million citizens without spending any money? How is that possible. Also, do they know Obama will lower the taxes of all but the wealthiest? Do they read?

  38. wags says:

Does the right side think we can operate a huge country with over 300 million citizens without spending any money? How is that possible.

The “free” market, silly. It solves everything if we just let it work on it’s own.

  39. Wiz says:

Steele speech talked about “turning the page”, but he never said what was on the page. He talks about new ideas without having any.

  40. graceland9 says:

Only wimps “teabag.” REAL conservatives go meatbaggin’.

Because when I’m complaining about taxes (usually in a public spot that was funded by taxes) I need to have my bag of MEAT!

  41. Purple State says:

I do wonder about that whole July 4th strategy. Really, I want to celebrate my country’s independence and patriotism the way I do every year. Even though people have the right to assemble and protest peacefully, I personally don’t want a protest to disrupt that good feeling that comes with the celebration of our country.

  42. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

“The energy of our base,” he said, “is strong, it is real, and it is hungry for success.” “You can feel” this grassroots energy, Steele said, proudly touting the lobbyist-organized tea bag movement.

If that’s true Mr. Steele, then how do you explain this:

The number of people who identify themselves as Republican:

    18%….http://www.ap-gfkpoll.com/pdf/AP-GfK_Poll_Topline_April_2009.pdf
    21%….http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/polls/postpoll_042609.html

Both polls show that the Republicans have lost 4% of their members in the last couple of months.
